Diner Reviews
  • "How great to have firelake in our neighborhood! My family has been twice Now and we all agree we are impressed by the food! The spinach artichoke dip with house made chips are so good - and my daughter and I LOVED the thickness of the key line pie crust. We've gone on Sunday nights and its been so nice and relaxing in a booth and our servers have been so nice and cheerful too. My husband loved his French dip and I was blown away by the hickory taste of the burger and the rockfish. The grill fire is burning hickory wood and you can tell! Free parking is a nice touch too. "

  • "We were a party of three and looked forward to our dining experience after viewing an interesting menu. Unfortunately, after being COMPLETELY ignored for 15 minutes and observing a patron on the patio who arrived after us being served, we decided to leave. On our way out we attracted attention from the staff. They inquired about our service and offered special attention. It was early Sunday evening and fewer than ten tables being serviced. We declined their offer and went to another restaurant which promptly took care of us."

  • "We like Firelake, but dont understand why they are phasing out the kid's menu. Please bring it back, especially given the number of families I've seen in there every time I've been."

  • "We go to this place at least once a week because it's in the neighborhood and walkable. It's also one of few decent places that don't involve a drive so we've rooted for the joint to be successful since it opened. The food is always terrific, the server turnover seems to be atrocious and we've had some struggles with the wait staff for sure. As much as we're there we should have Platinum status...but every time we walk in there it's like we have to introduce ourselves to the new staff. The ambience and live music is always good too...and great place to wind down after a tough day with great food and good atmosphere."

  • "This place needs to sort out what it wants to be--a sports bar, restaurant, music club, which is it? We went on a Wednesday evening and had to endure a lone singer (not advertised, or we would have gone elsewhere), planted in the middle of the room with his amplifier turned way too loud. When we asked if it could be turned down, the singer objected. Meanwhile, locals were hanging at the bar with TVs blaring. The food was good, but not worth it in what is simply a dressed up Ruby Tuesday."

  • "Try the grilled artichokes and crab cakes - both were excellent!"

  • "Our two visits to Firelake Grill were both excellent. The food is varied and delicious. We had grouper, trout, grilled artichokes, grits, and salads - - everything was delicious. There's a full bar that makes a superb martini and the restaurant has a very good wine list. On both visits, the servers were friendly, fun, and attentive to our every need. The restaurant is pretty and has live music some evenings. The menu is reasonably and appropriately priced. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit."

  • "Nice setting, but much of our food was cold, and the sever was sweet, but just could not keep up even though we were her only table for an early dinner--pre Oscars. Place was empty, they need more care with the food."

  • "The food was just okay for a quick dinner nothing fancy but still good. I had the rainbow trout it was cooked perfectly good flavor. The spinish measure up to some of the beys like Woodmont Grill. I must say the service was outstanding we were promptly greeted and seated. We never had to ask for much or wait for our waiter to long. I would recommend everyone try this place. It was my first visit but it won't be my last I'm sure."

  • "Dinner here to talk business. I picked the shrimp and grits. They came in a soup bowl filled with cream. The shrimps and grits were very tasty but finding them under the cream presented challenges. They have a decent beer selection. My friend picked a conventional hamburger that was, well, conventional but cooked as ordered, a decent size with good fries. On the other hand, the service outdid itself. The waiter was cheerful, came around enough to be useful without being intrusive. He had intelligent comments on the food. (He recommended I get the short ribs, not the shrimp and grits, but I did not listen.) The manager also came and asked if the TV noise was too much."

  • "Went for brunch with a party of 4. Service was slow, waiter didnt know menu (and had to go ask kitchen for clarification - about what came with an omelette!). Food was horrible and salty when it arrived. Overpriced for what it is, go down the street to Chef Geoff's - same prices, similar menu, better food. Don't waste your time or money on this place."

  • "My husband and I took our 23 year-old cousin out to dinner on January 26th. The restaurant was convenient to his apartment. We arrived early (at 6 p.m.) and we were the only ones in the dining room for the first half hour. The menu contains a lot of choices so it is easy to find something appealing for everyone. My husband and I had salmon and a side order of grilled veggies. Both were good. The ample portion of mashed potatoes was good but luke warm. My cousin ordered the ribs and was unable to finish the large portion. All in all a satisfactory dining experience."

  • "We have become big fans of Firelake Grill. The food quality and preparation have been consistent and very good. The trout was excellent and the key lime pie never disappoints. Tonight there was a great acoustic guitarist/singer, a nice change of pace from the jazz duo we have enjoyed on prior visits. Firelake is now our "go to" restaurant for a convenient, casual meal."

  • "For a restaurant, it was very quiet! I could actually have a conversation and hear the other person. It was very relaxing and "chill" with our waitress not too obtrusive and portions generous. Although I had the grilled chicken salad, it was VERY tasty and I enjoyed it along with a very nice glass of wine (thank you Bella!!) My dinner companion had a starter salad (it was HUGE) along with the French Dip and a few glasses of beer! All in all it was a nice evening out."

  • "The food was very good. The ingredients were fresh, premise made and prepared, and flavored well. The dinner was very enjoyable. The rating is 4-star only because I give 5-stars to very few places for memorable dining. If there was a ranking for a neighborhood restaurant (not meant to put such places down) it would have my highest recommendation. The service was all one could ask, friendly and efficient with just the right attentiveness. We spoke of going again as we left, probably the best compliment we could give."

  • "This neighborhood needs a place like Firelake Grill. And I've returned a few times because it so convenient. The food, though, is only average. Our waiter was fine with our substituting side ordersThe prices are higher than they should be for the quality of the meal. Service is excellent, ambience is a bit impersonal. But it is a nice, quiet neighborhood restaurant."

  • "I really want promote this place -based on the live music. I imagine they get a great lunch crowd, but dinner time is a deserted island. I have dined here twice and the service has been great from the waiter/waitress. New Years Eve 2014 the hostess could have faked a smile and I would've been happy. Her expression was like-what are you doing here, we told her we had a reservation and she asked if we wanted to sit at the bar?? We got over it, it New Years! Food is actually really good, but menu is very basic. The great thing about this place is the live music; been here twice and the two groups really made this place a gem. 2 man jazz group on New Years and a violin standup-base keyboard group back in Oct. Good for a quiet night with music."

  • "We come here often for brunch on the weekend, as we live close by in the neighborhood. The food is very good, the service great too. We have young children. Each time we have come here, I have asked that diaper decks be installed in the rest rooms. I understand that other parents have made this request too. However, this has fallen on deaf ears. I have even had to go across the street to the McDonald's to change them. Were these to be installed, it would be perfect!"

  • "We had a group of 10 for a Saturday night dinner and Firelake was available - turned out to be a very nice experience. Live music - light jazz - was a good touch. food was good to very good and service was exceptional. Attentive without being intrusive. Definitely now on our list for the Tenleytown/Cleveland Park area. Patio area looks to be a good bet for the Springtime..."

  • "Admittedly, it was Christmas eve -- but the restaurant was open, so they should have had competent staff on hand. We told the server we had one hour to eat. That should be enough time when the restaurant was only 25% filled. Notwithstanding that, it took 30 minutes to bring out our food -- and two of the dishes were badly under cooked, a steak and a salmon filet. I cook both, regularly. A steak that size takes 10-12 minutes -- tops. Salmon? Less than 10 minutes. Yet, in 30 minutes they couldn't get either cooked properly. Even when we asked for the check, it took them 10 minutes. The food did taste good, but the lousy kitchen management and slow service undermined the experience."

  • "Firelake Grill has a great menu, reminisicent of the old Slade's and the original Houston's, both of which we loved. Our party of 6 enjoyed the ribs, island ribeye, trout, salmon and cheeseburger. The grilled artichoke starter was tasty and the key lime pie was a great ending. We also enjoyed the live jazz duo and the attentive service. What a great restyling of this neighborhood spot. We'll be back!"

  • "Another visit to Fire Lake Grill DC was enjoyable with good service and food. This was my 4th visit, and while the menu has not changed, it is still offering more to try. The great service and the ability to make side substitutions is very easy going and never a chore. While the desserts are few the walnut apple cobbler is an excellent choice. Some time will have to try Brunch, and for children under 12 they have a very nice menu selection. It was exciting to see the restaurant starting to fill up, but still not seeming to have people waiting."

  • "Our party of 7 arrived. The hostess and server were VERY pleasant. Then a party of 36 arrived and things took a turn for the worse. Our drinks arrived and we ordered. Six of us ordered the steak and eggs with various iterations. We waited what seemed like forever while the large party was served. Our server was apologetic. Finally, the meals arrived. Two were cold, one steak was filled with gristle and fat. When the server inquired about the meals, we shared the problems. Again she apologized. Then the manager came over. He took off one meal and comped us desserts. The desserts were very good but again we waited forever. The kitchen can not handle the orders. If they want to succeed, the kitchen must match the service and price."

  • "Fire Lake Grill DC is a refreshing addition to the neighborhood. It has only recently opened, but appears to be still a secret that has yet to be discovered. The menu is good but not really that diverse and I would hope that there will be future expansion. The menu's problem is simply that once you have been there 3 times, as I have, you no longer really have new choices to try. The various dishes we have tried have all been very good and satisfying. The staff is very friendly and willing to explain the menu, the various dishes, and even help in any requested modifications. Hopefully, the neighborhood will discover this new gem so that it will succeed."

  • "Nice to have valet service. Welcoming upon entry. "Quiet" table as requested. Good selections from which to choose. Server nice but needed to speak up. First course took awhile until manager intervened. I'm always reassured when the manager is managing and checking on the service and food. Probably growing pains. Rest of meal well done. Rest of evening a good experience. We'll be back."

  • "My wife and I dined there on a Thursday night. It was dead...few dinner patrons. . It is organized like an Applebee's. Meaning that the bar is located in the middle of the dining room. The ambience is has potential but I thought is was a bit too bright especially the bar. Good god, it lite up the entire restaurant. Also, the bar lacks pizzazz. It is rather small and just looks like something you would find at a cheap hotel...sorry to be so harsh but the rest of restaurant looks pretty darn good...a nice sophisticated look. The bar just doesn't make me want to come there for an after work happy hour. No real issues with the food. This place has the potential to be a really good place to eat and hangout."
