Diner Reviews
  • "The food was unique and very tasty, but all our dishes had just a bit too much oil"

  • "The Firehouse restaurant is a must do for anyone who loves food. We had 3 appetizers, a pizza and two main course selections and all of them were wonderful! The wine was excellent and the dessert was simply "to die for!" We plan on returning and highly recommend this place to anyone who loves great food, great service and a great atmosphere at reasonable prices!"

  • "The food is consistently prepared very well and presented nicely, the service is wonderful, the indoor and outdoor atmosphere is inviting and clean... even the bathroom is kept neat and tidy."

  • "The four of us each got different food, and shared among us, so were able to taste a variety of things. Everything was delicious, from cauliflower appetizer to entrees and pizza. Definitely will go back."

  • "We were in Portland for the weekend only. Would return to this restaurant if we visit again. Staff was extremely attentive, in the best ways--not hovering but there whenever we needed something. The food--wow. Everyone got different items, and every item was delicious. I got trout with fennel and it was perfectly prepared and presented. The drink menu was super fun, with lots of twists on old-timey drinks and popular favorites. The Mad Hatter was best in many of our diner's opinions. Stumptown coffee was a great finish to the meal. And the wall that was open to the outdoors made us feel like we were dining outside on the perfectly beautiful evening--so nice. Each of us in our group of 7 highly recommend the Firehouse Restaurant."

  • "We went to Firehouse for dinner with another couple. Each of us got something different and everything was delicious - appetizers, pasta, pizzas, meatballs. No bland, boring food here - just some unique and delicious meals. One thing we liked especially was that the restaurant was quiet enough that we could hear what each other said. We look forward to returning soon!"

  • "We brought our family, including grandchildren, here for a family dinner. The service was great and the atmosphere was informal enough that it didn't feel stuffy to the grandchildren. The beet and summer salad were very fresh. The fennel sausage and soppressata pizzas were great. The kids loved the margherita pizza. Everyone left happy and we will definitely return to try more."

  • "We had eaten there once before and really enjoyed. So, made a reservation to come back. we were there y 7:30 pm on a weeknight. They had already sold out of 3 entrees. But, our salad and pizza was good. Just thought it odd to be out of so much so early."

  • "Our daughter introduced us to the Firehouse a few years ago, and we had a memorable meal then. This trip we ate in one night, went to an old reliable, and planned to go to a couple of "must go" places. When we couldn't get into one of them, we opted for the Firehouse. The other must-go place was a clunker, so let's talk about the Firehouse. We shared three small plates -- beet and hazelnut salad, roasted cauliflower and the daily bruschetta offering. All three of us gave these plates a 6 on your 1-5 scale. Main courses were likewise very good -- all three of us pretty much hogged our own without sharing. Ambience was marked down a bit because the recorded music was played at an unnecessarily loud level, and some of it was annoying."

  • "Unique restaurant in a converted fire station. Some of the food comes out on piping hot cast iron platters. Fun presentation of the delicious food."

  • "When we checked in we were greeted rudely by the hostess and from someone we took to be the owner. Had reservations and still had to wait 15 minutes to get a table with no explanation or apology. When we sat down we were told that two of the main dishes were no longer available. We ordered the night's special bruschetta which would have been delicious if the bread it was on hadn't been charred and hard. The aranchini were mediocre and both of our pizzas were soggy. The service throughout our meal was unfriendly and unhelpful. We had read so many great reviews of the place so, needless to say, we were disappointed. We won't be back."

  • "We go to Firehouse often - I call it my happy place! We took my mother-in-law to Firehouse last Friday, and to quote her "I now have new happy place"! Great food-great service-great experiences - thank you Firehouse!"

  • "My wife and I were looking for a special place to dine before the James Taylor concert and picked Firehouse because of location, menu and online reviews. We were not disappointed. Happy hour wine prices and the outstanding deep fried cauliflower were a great start. Her margarita pizza with fresh mozzarella out of the brick oven was delicious, as was my fresh trout on a sizzling skillet. Topped it off with a remarkable lemon tart topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Good prices, excellent food, and a friendly and efficient staff. Service rivaled some of the best restaurants we have eaten at, in a much more comfortable and relaxed environment. Definitely a "shall return" establishment."

  • "After reading about Firehouse we were excited to try it during our recent visit to Portland. The ambience was great and the restaurant is a wonderful example of what can be done to preserve the heritage of a building. Our meal, however, didn't quite come together for us. We found the meatball entree very one-note and while the cod dish was exquisitely plated it was over-powered by its green-olive salt bomb. If you are dining with your eyes this restaurant will absolutely rate 5 stars but once the food hits the palate it surely disappoints. "

  • "Firehouse starts with a great location. The building makes for a nice atmosphere. Great patio. The wood oven turns out great food. Loved the rice balls and cauliflower appetizers. Definitely go again."

  • "A busy Friday night. We had a coveted reservation. Our table was not the best of spots, facing the kitchen/storage door and the bathroom, but someone has to sit there. The ambiance was lively, although we had to use flashlights to read the menus. The salads were awesome. The desserts divine. Between, however, the entrees disappointed. The homemade pasta with sausage was very, very salty. The noodles were thick. The sausage was skimpy. My friends' pizza was soggy. As in doughy. Not done. We would have sent back the pizza, but our server was no where to be found. I can forgive the rushed/poor service on a busy night, but doughy pizza? And please, lay off the salt shaker. Bottom line: This was a promising spot, so we are willing to try again."

  • "I initially have been reluctant due to the requirement to have a reservation each weekend eve we have wanted to go. However, the service more than made up this and the food was simple and beautiful.. the way good rustic Italian should be. 5 stars. Thank-you. "

  • "We recently enjoyed dining for supper at The Firehouse. Our meal was fresh, tasty and well presented. Our server was a delight and very knowledgeable about how to pair a wine with what we ordered. The food was yummy. I would return!"

  • "Met one of my favorite girlfriends for a birthday dinner at Firehouse Restaurant. I wanted to pick a restaurant close to her house and when this one popped up on top, I was excited because I had heard really good things. It did not disappoint. We chatted non-stop while enjoying fried cauliflower with lemon creme sauce, wood fired iron skillet mussels, pizza margherita. We each had a salad and, of course, some libations. At the end of our visit, I was presented with a birthday dessert from the restaurant team. So sweet! The ambiance was warm and cozy. The people were genuine and friendly. The food was delicious and authentic. I would absolutely recommend. I'm thinking there is outside dining on warmer days... I'd like to try that, too!"

  • "We loved the apps and salads, but I've got to say we had a rude server. I was trying to ask the server if she liked the olives or the cauliflower better and she responded with, "Are you wanting me to explain to you the difference between an olive and cauliflower?" She said it pretty condescendingly and it was very apparent she didn't want any questions about the menu. She asked multiple times if I wanted to order a drink after I had ordered water and finally told her I was pregnant and couldn't drink. She then didn't come around until an hour later, so we had to find the water pitcher and refill our own waters. The apps and salads were good. The pizza was fair. The edges were burnt and the middle of the pizza was runny and soggy. "

  • "Friendly, accommodating staff. Great atmosphere/decor and excellent food. We waited a long time for our first round of cocktails (which were yummy!) but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves."

  • "Great use for an old fire station, love the history. The aroma of the food being prepared as you enter was a delightful scent. We started with cauliflower appetizer, delicious and new way of preparing a great vegetable. We both had the cod, it was a delight to our taste buds. My daughters was under cook but that was taken care of immediately. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful plate of food. We shared a lemon-poppy seed pound cake and buttermilk sherbet with a rhubarb sauce, yummy!!! I had to have seconds on the sauce. The service was awesome, as we were done with one course we were given the next. We had the Firehouse 29 and Firehouse drinks and they were great also. Making the reservations on line was easy and a good idea."

  • "Went for portland dining month which they actually have all year. Had a pizza which was very good. Crust on the bottom could be crispier but overall good food. My drink was really good though! Cute little spot in a neighborhood."

  • "I found the Firehouse on our recent visit through Portland. Nestled in a quite neighborhood, this lively and vibrant restaurant had its brick and mortar charms as well as the warmth of its pizza oven. I heard it was a local foodie spot so despite our reservation, the wait was rather long. Our server was nice though a bit timid (could it be the long day) and service was slow. It gave my family an opportunity to take in the ambiance, but bottom line was we were hungry. Portions are small though pricing was just about right though it will add up if you order a drink, appetizer, main course and dessert (which was awesome). Nonetheless, it's a great local gem and definitely a memorable experience that I would come back again."

  • "Firehouse is a comfortable space and the food is excellent. We tried 4 small plates (appetizers) that were all delicious. The salads we tried were wonderful, pizza was unusual and wonderful, pasta with sausage also a hit. Panna cotta with huckleberry topping....sublime. Our server was really helpful and there when we needed her. "

  • "As a pescatarian, I've been coming to the Firehouse since it first opened, and I've always been able to order a vegetarian or a fish main dish. Therefore I was very disappointed to find that at this past visit there were no main options that I was able to order; they all included meat. We don't go out and splurge on dinner very often, so when we went there this time - for my boyfriend's birthday - it was really disappointing that I wasn't able to order the kind of meal I'd looked forward to. I ended up eating a bunch of appetizers...not very satisfying. And yes, there's always pizza--but when we go out for a nice dinner, pizza isn't really what we have in mind (not to mention the fact that I can't eat the amount of dairy on a pizza)."

  • "Terrific service did not overcome fine, but unmemorable food. Pizza was greasier than expected. Meatballs were buttery, but too drenched in tomato sauce and shaven pecorino for their flavor to stand out. Fried cauliflower also drowned in its own grease. Lots of families. Great architecture and setting. Hopefully, this was just a bad night."

  • "We dine at The Firehouse as often as we can but often are foiled because it's so popular and we don't usually plan in advance. We also usually eat late and every time we've wanted the chicken it's been sold out! :( Well on Friday night we planned ahead, made a reservation, and were able to have the rotisserie chicken...YUMMM! We'll be ordering that again soon. Thanks Firehouse."

  • "High notes: beet appetizer was delicious, the pizza crust was thin and tasty like real Italian pizza, carrot cake dessert with cream cheese ice cream was awesome and memorable, ambience was enjoyable due to the history of the building and preservation, loved the smoky smell due to wood-fired oven, service was great and we appreciated having our table wiped down after every course. We rarely see that in even the more expensive restaurants. A few lower notes: pizza crust got soggy and I ended up folding it in order to eat it, pizza sauce lacked flavor, chicken was a bit salty, wine list rather limited. All in all this is a place worth visiting. I would probably not order the pizza next time and instead try the pasta. Dessert would be a must!"

  • "Was there for a first date. A bit noisy & crowded. Very interesting old brick firehouse, nice courtyard entrance. Place has character, wood fired oven smell permeates the place. The three course offering was great, hanger steak was just outstanding. Our waiter went beyond the call, recommending great food & wine, and then hung out while we were the last customers to leave without rushing us. Then kitchen staff chatted us up on the way out near 11:00pm. Very good food, nice & friendly folks, I'll be back for sure."

  • "AWESOME> perfectly braised broccoli - even the stems were tender. Wonderful pork shoulder and ribs with papardelle pasta - flavorful, not heavy deliciousness. Then chocolate pots de creme - oh lord - smooth chocolate, a wonderful layer of salted caramel, hazelnuts and Chantilly cream. Portions just right - left so happy and satisfied, but not stuffed to the gills. Made a get together with a dear friend even better."

  • "Four adults & a 13 month old. First visit. Every course served was excellent. The wood burnng pizza oven produces truely outstanding, authentic Northern Italian pizza... The wood fired baked mussels are the best we've ever eaten! Service was very good. Great vibe. Great value. We will definitly be returning."
