Diner Reviews
  • "This is the second time we have eaten at the Firefly Grill and we were equally thrilled both times. The service is so special and the food is amazing making a special day so much more special."

  • "Took my lady to dinner here and I was very impressed with how nice the place was. Very calm and relaxing. The food was great. The service was top notch."

  • "We enjoyed a nice brunch in a beautiful setting last Sunday. The food was fresh and tasty. The service was below par for the caliber of restaraunt this is. We repeatedly had to ask for drinks to be refilled. We were not thanked for our visit which to me is poor service!"

  • "Food was excellent as well as the service... Had to change our reservation. You were very accommodating! Thank you can't wait to come back!!"

  • "Having eaten at many great restaurants around the US and Europe, it is wonderful to find great food here in Effingham. We come through here about once a year and will plan on returning every year. Loved it."

  • "My husband and I traveled 3 hours from our Chicagoland home for the specific purpose of dining at the Firefly Grill. I had read about it some time back and put it on my bucket list. It is rare that the experience exceeds the anticipation but Firefly Grill did not disappoint. The menu reflects a great deal of their farm to table philosophy. We brought guests to join us for this delightful 'field trip' and they were as pleased as we were. We'll remember this visit for a very long time and will recommend the Firefly Grill with four enthusiastic thumbs up!"

  • "We ate in this restaurant 2 years ago while visiting Effingham for the Crossroads Classic Volleyball Tournament. While making plans for the tournament this year, we decided we had to make it part of our weekend again! It was just as wonderful as we remembered. We love everything about it. Wish we had one in Naperville!!"

  • "Definitely my favorite place to dine!!! The service is top notch and the food is always fresh and amazing. It is definitely unique and not something you normally get to experience in a small town. Everyone passing through should give it a try."

  • "Our group of 4 were celebrating 2 birthdays. First time to this restaurant. Food was great! Had the fried green tomatoes, halibut, and scallops. Also had the lavender martini which was wonderful! Brought us a chocolate tiramasu for our birthdays and it was delish too! Only negative was it took awhile to get our bill and payment squared away. Other than that, it was a great evening and meal; we will be back for sure."

  • "We celebrated a birthday and were quietly provided a dessert compliments of the Grill. Not the loud type of all waiters and servers gathering around and making a scene, just a happy Birthday from the waitress and wait staff and a delicious piece of Lava Cake with Ice Cream and fruit."

  • "Was surprised to find this gem 12 hours into my road trip from the Northeast to the Midwest! Best food I've ever had, excellent use of homegrown herbs and local produce and amazing prices! We had appetizer, dinner, desert and a drink for two for $55. Excellent, attentive, knowledgeable servers. Thinking of planning a trip out that way again just to be able to go back!"

  • "Had an overpriced fillet that did not taste as good as it cost (but was by no means bad). Asked for medium well. Got something between medium rare and medium. My wife and I each ordered one glass of wine. Each came no more than 1/3 full. My wife said at first she thought she was being served the wine to taste whether it was satisfactory, but no that was the serving. We have been here several times and until this time, it was one of our favorites. I told my wife, it would be a while before I would come back and my wife said she was not sure she ever would. Hiope others have had a better experience. I am being honest about ours."

  • "We discovered Firefly Grill when we were on the road moving from Virginia to Texas 2 years ago. We have since had several opportunities to find ourselves again in Effingham and have made it a point to go back to Firefly. So far, they have been consistently excellent on all accounts.....great service and delicious fare fit for foodies. :-) We also love that they try and use many local ingredients including some from their own garden. An absolute must if you are near Effingham. Cosmopolitan taste in the heart of Illinois farmland."

  • "This was our second visit at the end of a days driving from Pennsylvania, and it continues to delight! Food from the garden favors many dishes. Charming setting and very friendly staff. Thoughtful wine list too. I still dream of the pretzel hamburger buns!"

  • "Food was top notch, squash blossoms alone would keep you smiling. The quality of food is very apparent. Only bad thing is I will probably never be near here again since I live in Chicago."

  • "Dining at the Firefly Grill was truly a unique experience. The wait staff was superb, the ambience was good, and the food was absolutely delicious! Don't expect to find your ordinary everyday type of food. Many unique and interesting items on the menu such as the Smoking Goose sausage entree."

  • "Excellent food, knowledgable waiter. Great suggestions. Two of us split halibut and steak. Delicious. Blackberry ice cream and fruit for dessert. Wonderful!"

  • "Every time we are in Effingham we have to stop here to eat. We were on our way from Chicago the last time we stopped and even after amazing food all weekend this was still wonderful. My husband says that their cheeseburger with egg is the best burger he's ever had. I've tried several different items and they are always very good. Don't forget to ask your server for some food to feed the catfish and koi. Their deck over the pond is a great place to finish your drink after your done eating."

  • "Firefly grill is eclectic and interesting. It can get a little noisy at night which doesn't bother me at all, but might bother some. They use sustainable and local ingredients as much as possible which makes the food taste even better :) the service was great, I would recommend the Dungeness crab purses for an appetizer, I get them ever time, but all of my food was great."

  • "Our Columbia River Salmon entree mixed with pasta and seasoned vegetables was terrific. The house cabernet was good, but above the desired serving temperature. No ice with water was disappointing. Service was a little inattentive during a not so busy time. But overall a very good restaurant."

  • "We found Firefly Grill on our drive back to Nashville on Open Table. I was surprised at how nice it was when we pulled up since it is conveniently located right off the interstate. It was pretty busy for lunch, but our service was never hurried or rushed and we were sat right away. Everything we ordered was hot and delicious. For some reason they left the croutons off my Caesar salad, the waitress offered to bring them, but we ordered so much I didn't need them. The crab purses and calamari were great, the sweet creamed corn was awesome, and the pizza was perfect."

  • "Having a very nice restaurant in a very rural area is so exciting, however, the service was horrible. He would take orders and then disappear.. We had to ask other staff for drink refills, etc."

  • "Very charming atmosphere with beautiful landscaping. The building is so unique and tastefully decorated. Love the old barn boards with multiple colors. The blue drinking glasses and the touch of fresh flowers on the tables were a nice touch. Everyone who served us were enthusiastic and were knowledgeable in the menu. We were there for brunch and they had a very nice selection to choose from. I loved looking at the pond with the water lillys blooming and the sunflowers in the field. The gardens with the vegetables and flowers were a very nice touch. I like that they have such fresh produce. My four friends and I had a great time and will return. Mojito and sangrias were awesome! Thank you for such a great time."

  • "Every time I travel on I-70 through this area, I make reservations for an early supper on the enclosed back porch seating area. There is a small lake with Koi and Catfish, etc. to watch. At the right time of the year, there is a beautiful sunset. Entrees are excellent, however in the $28 to $34 range. An enjoyable meal can be made of lots of other selections. Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. An unexpected dining experience at this exit, full of the usual eating options. Try it for a change! Enjoyable."

  • "We learned of the Firefly Grill on a St. Louis PBS cooking show & thought it looked interesting. We live 1.5 hr drive from Effingham and the food was totally worth the trip. Everything was very fresh, right from their large on-site garden & tasted wonderful. Menu was loaded with interesting thing that made it tough to make a choice. We will definitely be back!"

  • "We drive across country twice a year and make a point to stop in Effingham. Food is delicious, inventive; their own garden supplies fresh herbs. Good crusty bread. It was a busy night (Fri) and all the staff pitched in to keep pace smooth."

  • "We heard so much about this place and have read a bunch of reviews (mostly good, some bad). Overall, it did not disappoint. It is a good restaurant. We loved the interior and the patio area. We had the onion ring appetizer, Caesar salad, kid's chicken and fries, pork chop (unevenly cooked - one part was tough and the other part was raw), short ribs (nicely done), chocolate milk, a cocktail, and a glass of wine - all for a a little over $100. Our child enjoyed feeding the fish in the patio. Other than the pork chop, everything else was good. The mashed potato was vey tasty. We'd come back and recommend to others as well."

  • "We loved the concept of the Firefly. The setting, the landscaping and the decor all lended to the farm-to-fork feel. My husband devoured the signature hamburger on a very yummy pretzel bun. (He was kind enough to let me taste before it was gone!) I had the meat pizza which was baked in a wood fired oven. Although it was smoky and meaty, is was also super salty and I think I would have been happier with a different choice. Our waitress was nice. I think she was trying to be helpful because the couple who sat next to us had a disruptive toddler. They were seated and ordered well after us but were served and left well before us which I'm sure everyone in the restaurant appreciated. Very savvy if that was what was intended."
