Firebird RestaurantFirebird Deserves More Customers!For pre-theatre was expecting ok food but it was really lovely. Courteous staff (Dimitri, in particular, and he makes a fabulous tableside Bananas Foster). Buckwheat blinis with salmon roe, yum. The lamb kabobs were tender and served with fragrant basmati rice, of which I could have eaten a bowl.The vodka list is endless, and great specialty cocktails (try the one w/huckleberry-infused vodka.) And then there was the terrific Dimitri and his Bananas Foster.....beats any I've had in New Orleans. I live in Manhattan, and know there are lots of choices, but I'd go back to Firebird - for the food, the attentive service, and the unusual decor. Hey, people, give this place a shot. The food doesn't disappoint and one cant't beat their prize fixe menu. I'd expect a bit more from the service - the wait staff is certainly polite but they lack in attentiveness and polish which I expect from a certain level of restaurants. The food was delicious. The dining room is very spiffy and comfortable. Above all, the service was exceptionally good and gracious. This visit we were served a slice of French bread. Other than that, the food was up to snuff - the Herring Under a Fur Coat was creative and tasty, the Belorussian Draniki was very flavorful. Our main dishes were the rich Salmon Kulebiaka and White Sturgeon - both done perfectly. Everything was super nice: the place itself, the service, and the food. We each tried appetizers we'd never had before, and chose classics (beef Stroganov and chicken Kiev) as our main courses. Prices are on the high side, food is more Russian themed haute cuisine than Russian per-se. Portions not huge but adequate. Children allowed but not easy to find something they like on the menu. It was so good we decided to take our son and his wife and we live in Pennsylvania. It was that good and that different of any Russian restaurants that we've been to. I grew up on delicious Russian food, prepared by my wife grandma. Firebird lived up to her standards and beyond! From every conceivable infused vodka flavor to amazing caviar, and phenomenal borscht (BEST ever), the meal delivered, and the staff, chef and owner were gracious and warm. Try the delicious Armenian Lamb Duo, Fennel Pollen Duck and Banana Foster. We love the elegant Tsar decor and the Russ Ballet display.
