Diner Reviews
  • "We passed by on the way to our hotel and made a reservation for that night. It happened to be Restaurant Week, so I enjoyed a wonderful 3 course meal for only $35! A rather large fresh salad to start, melt in your mouth filet mignon with roasted fingerlings and artichokes and a very good raspberry chocolate truffle cake for dessert."

  • "I had a national convention meeting @ Grand Hyatt and I found this place 1 block away. The food was excellent and it was quiet, away from the hustle and bustle. I ate here twice. Loved it."

  • "Fire and Sage is connected to the Marriott at 12th and H NW, so may be overlooked compared with some of the more well known restaurants in the area. My friend and I were hungry and wanted to relax and chat while eating. She had the lobster bisque and a plate of sweet potato fries, I had the club sandwich and salt-and-pepper potato chips. Very, very good. The wait staff was very attentive, although they were busy. We spent two hours chatting without being hurried out. Will definitely return."

  • "While the noise level was quite high, we were seated quickly and our food was made quickly. I will say that the mixed drinks were not great (I had 2 different cocktails), but the wine list was long and what we tried was great. The pasta dishes were out of this world, especially the spinach gnocchi with mushroom and fennel sausage (the sauce was to die for but I don't remember what it was called). All-in-all, this is a great spot for a date night."

  • "This is quite good and contemporary American fare in an hotel, nothing daring and original but not completely predictable either. The wine selection is well above average, with the option of getting 3-, 6-, and 9-ounce pours, along with buying entire bottles."

  • "This place has the best wings. They are fried crispy and with the Buffalo sauce or the Thai sauce, they are the best in the city."

  • "Food was OK. We had burgers since I was after the fireworks at 10:00 p.m. The waitstaff was friendly, but was clearly way understaffed for a full hotel on July 4th. Food was unremarkable and would not seek this restaurant out. I wanted to book Old Ebbitt Grill, but no reservation available. Again, not bad food, just nothing to write home about."

  • "but Bill, our server, manage to juggle his tables with aplomb. The Steak was excellent as were the mac and cheese and extraordinarily thin and fresh asparagus. Ambiance leaves much to be desired but the food was great!"

  • "I usually do not go to hotel restaurants but this place is the exception. The food is consistently delicious, the service great, and the prices reasonable. They have a large bar area and good happy hour prices, so great place to take in the World Cup"

  • "I guess I should expect it by now, but almost all hotel restaurants are less than noteworthy. Open Table seems to consist of three types of restaurants: Very expensive (and good), hotel restaurants (bland but passable), and weird (very edgy menus). Still better than going in blind!"

  • "Restaurant is connected to a hotel. Not mentioned in other reviews. Crab artichoke dip was bland as was bread & chips that came with it. My Spinach Gnocchi was also bland; they left out the sausage at my request. My husband said his steak was great. He tried to order Key Lime Pie (listed on online menu but not available). He settled for lemon tart. Service was very friendly & attentive. The food needs an upgrade. Until then, we won't return. "

  • "My colleague and I were attending a conference at Marriott Metro Center and decied to "stay in" for dinner the first night -Fire and Sage did not disappoint! The pappardelle pasta was fabulous and they willinging traded out shrimp for scallops. We started with the hummus appetizer -very fresh and on par with many of my favoirte Mediterranean restaurants back home!"

  • "First impressions means a great deal to me when I am entering a restaurant. The evening I went to Fire and Sage, the first impression was an empty hostess stand. When the hostess eventually noticed someone was waiting at the stand, she came up but was not friendly and told me that I was late. It would be one thing if Fire & Sage was the type of restaurant that is packed with reservations, like Le Diplomat, but they are not, so she needed to relax that my reservation was at 6:45 and I got there at 6:58. Anyway, the rest of the evening was great. The food was very good and our waitress was friendly and helpful. My review would be better but the hostess was the weak link. "

  • "Fire & Sage is close to the Hyatt Grand and I used the app to obtain a reservation for business colleagues. When we arrived, the hostess was frazzled and stated she didn't have my open table reservation and that it always gets screwed up when someone uses open table. I showed her my commitment receipt on the app and the text but that didn't sway her. What was most troubling was that there were many tables available unattended. My party went into the bar and were served immediately. A few minutes after we sat down and received our drinks the hostess returned saying there was a table open. The hostess was very nice, but appeared to be poorly trained and unsupervised. I would return but I would not use Open Table there."

  • "We stop here about once a month, always great food. The happy prices include $2 off wine by the glass and appetizer special. I recommend the pulled pork sliders. The burgers are also very good. Entrees are reasonably priced and consistently tasty. "

  • "One of my administrative assistants wanted to go here (again) for our Admin Professional lunch. Once again, we were very pleased with the experience. Food was top-notch, and service was very good. A nice place to consider if you are in the downtown DC area"

  • "I have been here before, and always enjoyed the food. This time was no exception. "

  • "They had a pretty good distinction between the bar and the restaurant side so it's not an issue if some one wants to eat with children. The food can be pricey for some but its quite fair considering the location and the food they serve. It's also a good place to catch up with folks during happy hour and the selection of appetizers is quite good."

  • "I went here to celebrate the last day on the job with my coworkers. I went here for the bonus OpenTable points, but I'll definitely come back, especially for happy hour. Split between three people, the bill came to about $50. That's including about six drinks and five plates. Other than the great prices, the food was really good. Make sure you get the wings. Finally, the service was great too. I'll definitely be coming back."

  • "Had dinner there before a Caps game...wonderful. Very good food, excellent service and just a pleasant time. Have eaten here before and always have the soup whether it's their great French Onion or the soup du jour. This time it was an Italian Lentil. It was just superb. While convenient to Verizon Center, F&S is just enough off the beaten track to avoid the noisy crowds at the restaurants closer to Verizon. Just good food, great service and at a fair price."

  • "A great place to have breakfast whether it's ordering off the menu or the very nice buffet. Great service and quality food."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "The service (from being seated to being served) was bad. Add to that a lackluster location in a Marriott (which is NOT apparent from the description in Open Table), and this was an entirely forgettable experience. We both felt that the chef had a clever menu but the poor experience really overshadowed the food. The server did not even get my husband's order correctly even when my husband clarified what burger he was ordering. Given all the options in DC for a great dining experience, do yourself a favor by passing on this one."

  • "Hmm, I know better than to dine at most in hotel restaurants. Late flight and was desperate. Meal was passable, the service was really quite good, and the folks across the way were getting caught up with each other (loudly). All in all, ok, but in a gray dining town like DC I had hoped for better."

  • "I have been to this restaurant many times. It's a favorite for me and a friend. Service is always excellent though this time the waitress was not too friendly at first, then more friendly later. Our choices for lunch were new for both of us, but as usual, they were quality meals, as always."

  • "New menu items same great service. Our waiter remembered us from a few months ago. Have priced desserts on Sunday, try the warm apple walnut crumble!"

  • "Fire & Sage is my go to place for lunch meetings. The noise level is low enough that you can have a normal discussion without raising your voice, even with the tv's going and other diners near. The food is served quickly and is excellent. My favorites being the shrimp ceasar and the crab and corn chowder."

  • "The menu changed dramatically, which was reflected by the restaurant being completely empty. The usual comfort foods that were offered disappeared. The new menu is not very good."
    Dined on 2/18/2014
  • "The food was good...however, the menu shown online was incorrect. The reason the restaurant was chosen was because of the varied offerings...and plenty of them. When we arrived at the restaurant, the menu contained only a small portion of what was shown online."

  • "Just arriving to be seated, the reservation area was very impressive and plenty of space."

  • "The food is not the reason to go here; it wasn't bad for a hotel, but just could use a little more attention to detail. My chicken breast was dry and the risotto was undercooked, but all that being said, our server Bill was OUTSTANDING. He gave great attention to us and seemed thoroughly engaged in our patronage. He informed us he had been with the company for a number of years, and it showed. I left a great review with management because he truly did such a good job. Even with mediocre food, a restaurant can redeem itself with great service. Case in point."

  • "Lodged inside the Marriott Metro Center Hotel, Fire & Sage has a built-in clientele, but remains largely unknown in a neighborhood bursting with more ostentatious eateries like Bibiana & Cap City Brewhouse across the street. That only means that you can always get a table here, but the food is healthy, original, savory and affordably priced, which to me spells secret neighborhood gem. My favorite dishes are the beet salad and the flatbread pizzas, but other dishes are also delicious."

  • "Ask to sit in the back of the restaurant as sitting in the front area means you catch the draft of cold air every time someone opens the hotel doors. The food is really good, and I really liked the mango raspberry sorbet."

  • "I enjoyed the concept. Creative, interesting food, reasonably priced, with wines by the glass available in three different sizes."

  • "We were looking for a place for a bite to eat before attending a show at the Warner Theatre, and found Fire and Sage on line. When we arrived, we were quite surprised to find the restaurant was part of a hotel - which would never be my first choice to dine. However, our server was extremely knowledgable about the food and drink offered, and she was pleasant and professional and really made us feel welcome. The food came to us quickly and was delicious - from the corn and crab chowder to steaks and chicken, all cooked to order and timely. Would definitely go again, and it's changed my mind from anti-hotel eating to lets try it!"

  • "We booked this based upon the recommendation of Open Table and were fairly disappointed, although my 12 year old really seemed to enjoy it. Did not realize when we booked it that it was the hotel restaurant for the Marriott. Crab Cakes were disappointing, although we tried crab cakes at three DC restaurants and did not care for any of them, so it may be a regional taste we do not care for. It was a slow night so we were basically seated in the bar area which was not really appropriate when we had the kids. A group of 20 somethings came in for drinking and it was just not really a good mix."
