A word from Fior d'Italia
Opened in 1886, Ristorante Fior d'Italia is America's oldest Italian restaurant. Chef Gianni Audieri continues the tradition of serving authentic Northern Italian cuisine with dishes such as gnocci, osso buco and calamari being called the Best in San Francisco by "The Fior's" customers. "The Fior" is within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf and the Financial District and just a few minutes from popular Beach Blanket Babylon.

Our group was given excellent service, despite a full house. Yay for valet parking in North Beach! Food good enough to please everyone; the attentive and delightful waiters made up for the fact the food wasn't exceptional.

Great calamari. Very nice people working and they put up with my 20 month old while she made a mess. They made my wife and I feel comfortable bringing our child. We will definately be going back there, but maybe leave our little one at home so we can enjoy a nice relaxing dinner.

Food was delicious but was not a lot of choices for a Sunday Mother's Day Brunch. And a little skimpy on portions. Our bottomless Mimosas were more orange juice than Champagne and not quality champagne. All items ala cart. Old Fashioned Service in suit and tie and good old fashion Italinan Feeling, very friendly all people and service. Nice Old Fashioned San Francisco Jazz Music. Pricy for dinner items ala carte.

Though the crowd was a little older, the restaurant's food was wonderful. I had a butternut squash ravioli and a wonderful salad. I live near the restaurant and will likely go again. Only minus - I had reserved well in advance and asked for a special table since it was a special occasion but we were led to a ho-hum table in the back. So if you are going for a special occasion, maybe not the place to go.

  • Wonderful Old-School Italian

Historic restaurant (and hotel)- very old-school Italian, not buzzing with tourists! Although food was not as top-notch as my last visit, it remains a favorite, for its always-excellent service, its luxe ambiance, and its retro feel. Great cocktails, and the bartender, who checks to see if you like them, is straight out of Italian central casting. New menu additions are lighter & less caloric, such as the yummy berries-with-choice-of-liqueur dessert. The linguini tutto mare was perfect, and the unusual "Calamari 1886" was great, too. So, what didn't hit the mark? Too little basil in the mazzarella-pomodoro salad (we'd expected more of a caprese salad), and not quite enough sauce on my papardelle with oxtail ragu. However,I'll be back.

Just about like eating or being at home, but with special and friendly service. Furthermore, I like the consistency of knowing I'll get what I expect, and in case I dont like - or made a mistake, no problem we go to the next choice. Relaxing, quiet place to enjoy an excellent meal, and their warm - home-made bread, etc. "I shall Return" !

  • I would consider the food
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 4/15/2012
I would consider the food "old world Italian". We had the Osso Buco (very tender and tasty), Veal Chop (tender, very good), pesto Pasta (good), Veal piccata (average) and Veal with mushrooms)(average), fried calamari (good). Service was spotty. Our waiter was very attentive in the beginning, after he took our orders, we didn't see him again. His co-worker and bus boy served the food! I don't think we would go back only because there are so many other Italian restaurants that have better food and service.

Our birthday dinner for my sister (3 sisters dining)was perfect. We couldn't have asked for a more congenial atmosphere to celebrate. We took our time, working through three courses, various cocktails and wine, at our leisure. At no time were we rushed, our waiter was marvelous, friendly, courteous, arriving at the right times for our orders, and generally being solicitous without being obsequious! We will absolutely return for other occasions. btw, as children we dined at Fior d'Italia with our grandparents and chose it basically out of nostalgia, none of us had been there in years. Turned out to be the perfect choice!

We made reservations because we had seen this restaurant on television as the "Oldest Italian Restaurant" in America. One of us had the Ravioli di Zucca:Pasta stuffed with Pumpkin, Mustard Fruit and Amaretti,Butter, Pinenuts and Sage Sauce (sweet but very filling and delicious), another had lasagna (average) and another had Linguine con Polpette al Pomodoro (Linguine with Veal Meatballs and Tomato Sauce, also deemed average). Our server was Donna who was extremely personable and professionable.

We had dined previously at the old Fior d'Italia, and this was our first time to the new location. Were we ever disappointed! The bright lights killed any chance for an intimate, romantic dinner. We remember the other place as being dark and "very Italian" with their waiters from the old country who had been there for years. My sauteed eggplant parmigan was excellent! Unfortunately, I had to eat it alone since a different steak waas served to my husband other than the one he had ordered. When the correct steak appeared, he did enjoy it, but eating at different times is not our idea of fine dining. We were each comped a drink, but still.....

Overall, this was a very disappointing experience for someone looking for good Italian food in a historic North Beach location. The ambience was nice, the food merely OK. When we arrived for a 8 pm reservation, the place was full and exuded an air of populairity. It took at least 15 mins. for anyone to take a drink order or bring bread. Then low and behold a big tour bus pulled up and the restauant quickly emptied, leaving three or four tables. As frequent visitors to SF, perhaps we should have known better. I would not return. My view is that it's just one of those tourist traps that costs too much for a very medicore experience. I was frankly embarrassed that I was the one who chose the place.

It was good. It wasn't great. The waiter was really friendly after initially not being so friendly, and the food was good but not great. We probably will not go back. My ravioli was really dry and had virtually no sauce on it. And the coffee was almost $3.00 each and we were never offered a refill.

We celebrated my father's birthday here with a wonderful brunch - the brunch menu is extremely affordable. I ordered the poached eggs with prosciutto and found to my delight that they served it on a large bed of spinach. Additionally, they serve their bread warmed up in a basket - so few places do that nowadays. I ordered polenta with cream, cut-up fruit and italian sausage for my kids. We also got a tiramisu with a candle for dessert. Even though the place "seems fancy" they were super-accommodating of my young children, providing them with a coloring book and crayons. Service was excellent. My only complaint was that the food was just a touch salty. Fior is steeped in history and a great place for family occasions.
