Diner Reviews
  • "We went to have pasta dinner before the SF Marathon. The Gnochi were fair but cold in the center (as recently defrosted), and the tomato sauce was extremely acid. The penne with tomato slices was boiled pasta with chopped tomatoes inflator except for to much garlic."

  • "Went for a birthday dinner with family. The service was the best I have encountered in SF, food fantastic starting with appetizers then main course...linguine vongole, Pasta with peas, canneloni, and more. Everyone (5) enjoyed their meal. Brought our own wine and our waiter opened without an issue. Staff brought terramisu with candle and sang an in tune Happy Birthday. Overall a great night of food, conversation and fun."

  • "We went for the first time to celebrate my birthday. The wait staff and host were attentive without hovering. We did, however, have to request iced tea refills, which they were very quick to get for us. Overall, it was a good experience."

  • "Thank you so much for a very nice evening dining experience. I was not rushed, food excellent and so was the service. Your restaurant is a hidden GEM! Great food, ambiance, staff caring and attentive, Good wine list. Excellent! Good jazz too! I cannot wait to go again!"

  • "Our visit to Fior D'Italia for my birthday was lovely from the moment we arrived. We were warmly welcomed. The staff was funny and professional. I love the old photographs of the restaurant history. The Caesar Salad was the best I've had in many years. The homemade pasta was tender and tasty. My husband's lasagna was the absolute winner of the evening!"

  • "They were out of a lot of things. Meat was over cooked. Table for 8 was a little separate from the dining room which was nice. Service was great"

  • "We had dinner here with our teenagers and parents before going to the symphony on a Saturday night in the summer -- lots of different generations but they all found something to eat that they enjoyed. The waiter was friendly, and the food was very good, especially the homemade pastas. Valet parking was convenient, too. Try this restaurant if you're looking for a good meal without a lot of drama and noise."

  • "This is as "old school" San Francisco as it gets. Food is excellent, ambiance is of a bygone era. A San Francisco treasure."

  • "Good reliable food. Bean soup was excellent and main courses were good, just a little passé. The calimari appetizer was a huge portion for two and yummy with a crisp and flavorful crust. However I had wished the dipping sauces were not catsup and tartar sauce. How about a good aioli?"

  • "On my first visit a few months ago, we chose the fish special and it was delicately prepared and the service was excellent. This time the food was inadequate. The clams were so small as to be almost absent in my dish and the linguini wasn't flavored. Service was inadequate. I doubt that I'll go back. Maybe Saturday night at 6 is a mistake."

  • "Went here for the first time and the service and food were fabulous. Everything tasted fresh and the prices were great! I wish they had a kids menu."

  • "A bust evening in San Francisco. Fior D'Italia rose to the challenge, feeding us (5) and everybody else in time to allow us to get down to the wharf for the fireworks. They didn't skimp on quality, service, food, wine, everything. They were simply superb."

  • "This was a wonderful restaurant that we found within a couple blocks of our hotel (Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf). First time there and we will definitely be coming back. The cabbage soup with out of this world...and the fresh pasta delicious. We will definitely be returning."

  • "Upon the recommendation of my grandparents, my husband and I had dinner here during our first visit to SFO. Given that my grandparents had held onto the business card from their visit 15+ years ago, I had high hopes. And they were met. The food was excellent, particularly the chicken tortellini my husband had. We also really liked the still steaming bread that was served while we waited for the entree. What I was particularly impressed with was how the host treated us. We wandered in off the street, not dressed fancy in the least, and the host was extra engaged with us, when I expected the opposite. He stopped by multiple times, and was very friendly and engaging."

  • "The new Fior D'Italia is absolutely magnificent. The food is excellent, with tender fillets and homemade award-winning pastas; the wine list is superb, with a good representation of both Italian and Californian wines; and the service is first-rate. I am a concierge, and I now regularly recommend Fior D'Italia to my guests. It is a reliably pleasant experience and a delicious treat if you like top-tier Italian cuisine in an atmosphere where you can actually enjoy yourself and have a conversation. Adore this restaurant."

  • "I chose Fior d'Italia because it is the oldest Italian restaurant in America. Two friends and I were seated right away in a booth but we immediately asked to move to a table across the room because the noise from the bar was too loud to hear each other speak. We were given menus right away but then waited and waited for a server to appear to even take a drink order. Since it was a slow Sunday evening and the restaurant was not busy it was hard to understand. The food was reasonably tasty, but not exceptional in any way. Overall it was not the experience I was hoping for and probably would not go back."

  • "was amazing!!! I was shocked to find Rabbit Stew on a menu in an Italian Restaurant. I get it every time I dine at this restaurant. It's my favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco."

  • "It is great to see this very traditional restaurant re-opened at this location in the heart of North Beach. The staff is very attentive, friendly and professional."

  • "Went here, on a recommendation, to celebrate two Birthdays. Food was good. Did not however, have either of the two wines I asked for. Waiter never came by to pour wine (on a $140 bottle of red), never got water re-filled & totally neglected our birthdays. Would not go again."

  • "The setting, food, and service was stellar. Fior D'Italia is a great find, although it's been there for more than a century! We genuinely enjoyed being in the space while the sun filtered into the dining room through curtained windows."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary by returning to our honeymoon hotel .......the Washington Square Inn and dining at the same restaurant.....Fior D'Italia. Of course, the restaurant has since relocated but it continues to have the same delicious food. We loved the jazz band during and after our Wednesday dinner. At first, we were a little concerned to read some of the comments in TripAdvisor and Yelp about Fior D'Italia, but my wife and I, plus our friends, loved the service and the food. However, we missed the old place on Washington Square. Thanks for a great evening."

  • "Fior is a very good neighborood restaurant. There was a good mix of locals and tourists. We were greeted warmly and the service was very good. Fior is known for its fresh pasta and it did not dissapoint. My wife requested a sage butter sauce for her pasta vs. the cream sauce listed on the menu. They were eager to please. The restaurant has been in SF for more than 100 years. Would have enjoyed reading or listening to a history of the restaurant."

  • "We came for the music--Mal Sharps's The No Money in Jazz Band--and stayed for the good food and ambiance. Carpeted floors means low noise level even with the music. Eligant old time Italian restaurant feel. Traditional North Beach a few blocks from Washington Sq. Park. "

  • "I was meeting a friend that I had not seen in forty years, our server picked up the vibe, and did everything she could to give us the time to re-acquaint. I've been going to Fior D'Italia since the sixties and I have never been disappointed... I couldn't have picked a better choice for this occasion. The veal chop and the rabbit dishes are very good, and a reminder that I should frequent Fior more often."

  • "The food was great, but the service was questionable. We had to ask for our orders to be taken. The restaurant itself is lovely and we had a great table."

  • "Fior D'Italia is a little tired, but, still a shiny gem in a sea of haute cuisine when you want a traditional Italian meal in a historic San Francisco spot in the little San Remo Hotel, near Fisherman's wharf. My Mother really enjoyed the history and the doting wait staff presenting calorie loaded cheesy Italian pastas and side dishes. A fun treat from more elaborate or complex San Francisco dining, with lots of multi-generational families sharing a Friday night family dinner."

  • "I discovered this gem years ago at their previous location (now occupied by Original Joes). Had the opportunity to re-experience the remarkable friendly and personable accommodation as well as the delightful food when there on 5/21/14 when I was able to take my East Coast brother and his family there. From the moment that Lalo greeted us, seated us and checked with us throughout the meal, I have an unreserved and unqualified recommendation for this special place: it is the pinnacle of a real and accessible restaurant that makes one feel special, like being at Chez Panisse, Farrollon, or Foreign Cinema in San Francisco. On the practical side: food quality as expected; costs are unexpectedly low! "

  • "Enjoyed the petrale. Each course was deliciosio! We ordered from the special anniversary menu. Quite a dinner for the price!"
    Dined on 5/20/2014
  • "The menu listed online in a total fabrication and has no resemblance to the actual menu at the restaurant. The actual selection at the restaurant was very limited and the prices were at least $10 higher for every entrée. The food was okay, but definitely not worth the higher price. I feel absolutely deceived, as the menu should be updated to reality. I will not be back."

  • "We love the (new) location, very convenient, parking is not as difficult as the Wash Sq location. We had petrale sole for our meal which was very good. Tomato/burrata salad was a disappointment; one small tomato which wasn't ripe. It's a nostalgia trip, we'll do it again."

  • "This restaurant brought back memories of Sunday spaghetti with Mom making the gravy all day long. The flavor of the food is authentic Italian. To an Italian, this is comfort food. "

  • "We have been a few times now, and it never disappoints. The filling in the Ravioli and Tortellini, and all the sauces, and general al dente cooked pasta's are totally yummy. Love Wednesday nights, as they a have a Jazz band on, they are great, it just adds to the ambience of the place. The Tiramasu, is not traditional, but the flavour is very light and just the right portion after eating lots of pasta. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. "

  • "F'ior d'Italia is the standard in fine Italian food. Care is taken in every detail and the room, with its niches, some closed off with curtains, is perfect for private parties or just couples. The Caesar salad is unsurpassed. I've had many dishes here in the many times I've gone, but this night I had the halibut with a beurre blanc with roast potatoes and French green beans. Delish! But the pastas, the risotto, all of which I tasted because I go with people who like to share, were better than most any fancy foodie place you can find in San Francisco. And what would bring me to this classic instead of a "fancy foodie" place? Peace, quiet (well, on this date there was Mal Sharpe's wonderful band), white tablecloths and great service. "

  • "Heard about this being oldest Italian restaurant in country and had to try, being of Northern Italian descent! The service was amazing!!!! Best service maybe ever that I've had! Fast seating, drinks, food! It was amazing. Happened to be in city on Mother's Day and looked up and booked a few hours before dinner. Cute, off the beaten path, many locals and families. Got seated in front corner window. Pear cocktail was great! Calamari, pesto pasta, and cannoli (amazing!). My husband got the $18 prix fix menu, which seemed like a bargain in the City! I'm going to try to bring my Ladies' Night Out group here. Loved it! "
