Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food with outstanding sauces. Very good wine list with some hidden gems. Pricey but worth it. One minor suggestion add some non fish entrees for non fish lovers. Hard pressed to beat their preparation of fish"

  • "This was my first visit. Everything about this dinner was extraordinary. It was very noisy, but I had read that prior to coming so I was at least prepared. I wouldn't go here hoping to have a deep discussion, personal or business, but the vibe was energetic. I can't wait to go back."

  • "Three of us lunched at Fiola Mare this week, and we received the best service we'd had in years - attentive, engaging and knowledgeable. The food was excellent, with subtle flavor combinations that enhanced the ingredients without fighting with them. I had not finished my entree - I left an undercooked lobster claw - and when the busboy (the busboy!) cleared my plate, he looked askance at the uneaten food. I explained that I preferred my lobster firmer. I could see from his face that he was going straight to the kitchen with my plate, so I hastened to add that no doubt it was a matter of taste. "Chef must see this," he said, very firmly. I left with a boxed-up replacement entree, after I had eaten 90% of what was on my original plate."

  • "Amazing dining experience, service, food, view...particularly the service, which was outstanding, so accommodating and so friendly. The food was delicious, wine list...they even comped a bunch of desserts as a surprise because I was dining for a birthday - which impressed the birthday diner! Such a gem considering all the terrible service most DC restaurants have lately. I cannot recommend this restaurant more."

  • "Looking forward to eating here and left disappointed. Waiter totally ignorant of menu and all he could do was point out the most expensive items. Everything else he said from sauces to deserts was wrong. Therefore, did not enjoy one entree at all because it had cream sauce which was unexpected and the rest was at best average. Our company did enjoy a plain piece of fish grilled well. Ambiance was terrific as we sat outside on a beautiful evening."

  • "Very expensive food that is worth the price. No other restaurant in Washington serves seafood like this"

  • "Location is fabulous, decor is wonderful and you can certainly sit at your table and be able to talk, not shout, to your dining partners. How rare is that. Pricey, but what an incredible evening we spent there. We were not rushed and I could have stayed aĺl night watching the river flow by."

  • "Extremely expensive: four medium size scallops with tiny garnish cost $28.00"

  • "We ordered wonderful fresh oysters that came with lovely dipping sauces that were perfect ! My husband ordered the Shrimp and Grits and it was exactly that, large shrimp with a very delicious sauce and some grits, not an overwhelming amount of grits. My husband said it as the best shrimp and grits he has ever had! I had the smoked salmon with poached eggs on homemade biscuits and homemade hollandaise, perfect eggs and the salmon was so delicate! The coffee was also on point made fresh Illy was strong and good. Overall service , everything very good. Would go back again for dinner!"

  • "Three of us had Saturday dinner on the balcony on a warm July evening. The lively waterfront below added to the fun. Our waiter was knowledgeable & attentive but not obtrusive. We began with the wonderful Buratta of Buffalo Mozarella. Next one had scallops & pronounced them excellent. The other had the Tagliatelle with scallops, etc. & thought it was so-so. I had the Langoustines which were excellent. (The menu offered one, but the waiter wisely recommended two.) We shared a plate of spinach. Two of us split a bottle of Savignon Blanc --good choice--and one friend had a glass of Pinot Noir (good.) The Marchesi, a rich & creamy chocolate fudge completed our dinner. Great evening!"

  • "We had a reservation, but upon arrival the wait for an outside table was over an hour. It was suggested that we try the boardwalk level patio that is non-reservation and serves the same menu. We were immediately seated. And overall enjoyed dinner. Good food, nice ambiance. My company was great and kept me entertained. The service was very slow, and not attentive. Our waitress was nice, but seemed overwhelmed. It appeared that mngt was attempting to keep the same standards on the patio as in the restaurant, not taking into account the distance to the kitchen. We finally asked that out wine bottle be left on our table since our glasses went empty without replenishment. Lighting was also poor and watching guests light trays for staff, amusing."

  • "Celebrating birthdays on 2 different occasions was an memorable experience for everyone. The food was superb, service outstanding and the little touches of a birthday dessert with a single candle lovely. The view of the Potomac River and the Kennedy Center were fantastic. Thank you for making their special day one they will remember with pleasure."

  • "Very nice setting on the Georgetown waterfront. The do Valet. That would have been helpful to know in advance. Great job with the buildout. The waiter was excellent and being Italian didn't hurt. The cocktails were creative, especially the ginger mule. He was very knowledgable of the food and textures. The whole fish was prepared and deboned table side with skill and perfection. The Lobster Ravioli was favorable with huge chucks of Lobster. Not too much sauce. Desert was average, not spectacular especially giving they given they have a pastry chef. Overall I would comeback."

  • "The concierge at the Hay Adams recommended Fiola Mare. Our excitement as we walked along the waterfront was squashed the minute we walked in and the hostess tried to seat us in the middle of a bunch of interior banquets. The restaurant was virtually empty. I asked if we could have one of the many open window tables and after several minutes we were taken to a table directly in front of the back bar. No window. Then the waiter...smug and indifferent. Ordered a martini and it was presented in a smallish martini glass only half full. Bread put on the table with no butter or olive oil (other tables had it). Our entrees were tasty, however the portion sizes were ridiculously small for the price. 2 scallops for $48? Bad experience."

  • " Many friends gave good reports on food, ambiance etc but with strong warnings regarding the prices. I went knowing I had to be alert to the nuances of the prices. In fact, this was true. Some items i.e.are charged by the pound and some by the piece. If I had not been cautioned I might not have realized this detail and ended up being surprised by my bill thus disappointed in the experience. As it was our party chose with care and with an eye to the price of each item. Everything we tried was excellent and the bill was in keeping with the quality. The waiter made a very nice gesture. I requested a cocktail with 1/2 liquor the non-drinker present teased about bringing him the balance. waiter brought @ at no charge.. a virgin drink"

  • "Rare water view restaurant that is upscale and elegant offering unique and painstakingly prepared offerings. Foodies will enjoy this gem! No detail in presentation is overlooked and every bite is to be savored. Little touches like the sweet treats offered at the end of dinner were perfection! Ours were the best almond nibble I've ever had and small macaroons that melt in your mouth. Take the corporate card! The prices are also over the top, but the food, ambiance and service did not disappoint."

  • "The presentation and quality of food was amazing! We sat outside on the patio and the service was attentive and personalized. We took our son for his birthday and they made sure he felt special. Would definitely return again."

  • "We had dinner this past weekend at Fiola Mare. The restaurant was stylish and in an amazing location. Our server, Nesko, was incredible! He knew everything on the menu, including how each dish was made, suggested excellent pre-dinner drinks, and offered knowledge of wine pairings with each of our dishes. All of our entrees were phenomenal, after which we were greeted by unbelievable desserts. Overall, our entire experience was great!"

  • "The restaurant came HIGHLY recommended and we were not disappointed. The waiter, Michael, was very personable and attentive. We were there for Sunday brunch celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary. We were greeted with complimentary drinks (those Bellini's were a delicious discovery!) and dined on seafood. My husband enjoyed the raw oysters and lobster-stuffed crab cake and I (who enjoys taking risks with dishes I've never heard of) chose the skate wing. Our waiter made it sound too good to pass up and he was absolutely correct! I was very pleasantly surprised and practically licked the plate! We definitely plan to return--next time for dinner."

  • "My one complaint is that the food was rushed. I was not finished eating my appetizer and my meal arrived. I hate to be rushed through a meal especially at those prices."

  • "This place was excellent. We had appetizers of oysters and the oyster parfait. Tried two pastas which were both excellent, and had a whole fish to share which was delightful. The service was very attentive and the cocktails were interesting and delicious. Very nice view of the river too."

  • "We had a wonderful birthday celebration dinner. Food was fabulous and the service wonderful. Only a minor disappointment that we didn't get a table with a water view. All and all, it was a great evening."

  • "From Valet to cuisine to the service, it was indeed, a special evening. I am only sorry I do not have the name of our waiter. Whomever, he was splendid in every respect and expertly complemented the overall experience. Upon arrival at the valet station we were met by 2 fellows, one of which anticipated my jacket in the back seat and graciously held the coat for me to adorn. We were met with a warm greeting inside by a truely sparkling young woman who took us to our table. We were promptly introduced to our waiter who throughout the evening was exceptionally friendly, professional, knowledgable and confident. A party of 4 we were unanimously appreciative of each and every offering, both presentations and cuisine."

  • "Lobster so tough and rubbery I could barely cut it with a knife. 'Lump crab' flakes so tiny they must be eaten with a spoon. The heirloom tomatoes were delicious. But if this salad was a 'special' I have no desire ever to go back and sample any of the 'ordinary' items on the menu -"

  • "After spending a delightful evening at the sibling restaurant, Fiola, we had high hopes for Fiola Mare. While food was ok, but in small portions, be prepared for the sticker shock of the menu prices: $18 for a green salad and $40 for lobster ravioli. With fish sold by the pound, be prepared to spend $50-$60 for a plate. Service was spotty: long intervals between server sightings. The wine list is extensive, with bottles running from the high $30s to several thousand $$. All in all, can't say that the meal was a good value."

  • "Norm is that food is mediocre for restaurants with a view. Not anymore! We have had dinner and brunch at Fiola Mare at separate occasions. The food is amazing. The service is excellent. On a recent trip to celebrate my mother's birthday, they prepare my favorite entree "under the sea" for her even though it's not normally offered for brunch. The service was amazing. The food for the kids (we ordered simply grilled arctic char) was so good - even my most picky eater devoured her food. Highly highly recommended."

  • "We have fond memories of chef Fabio Trabocchi's cooking at Maestro. We were somewhat disappointed when we went to Fiola shortly after it opened. But now with Fiola Mare, Fabio seems to have hit his stride again. While the menu's offerings were somewhat limited, the food we ordered was delicious: the Colors of the Garden salad wasn't as superb as I expected it to be, but very good. The burrata was wonderful, though not as fresh as it was at Maestro. My bucatini pasta dish with prawns was fabulous--the sauce had a slightly sweet, almost creamy taste. The lobster ravioli my husband ordered was divine--with over a pound of fresh lobster in it. Save room for the desserts--they were terrific! Our server and sommelier gave us great recommendations"

  • "A friend and I had the 3-course prix fixe lunch menu. Each course was excellent - a watermelon gazpacho with incredibly fresh lump crabmeat, arctic char with clams on a farro risotto, and a fresh pineapple sorbet with macerated strawberries. Not only was the food delicious, the service was top-notch and the setting lovely. I will go back as soon as I can and am happy to recommend it to friends."

  • "We arrived at 7:55 for an 8:00 reservation. We were seated at 8:20. Per other reviews here, not an uncommon occurrence. We spent the interim at the bar where a masterful bartender made exceptional cocktails for $15.00 each. Our table was just outside the main dining room which seemed to be so loud that being there would have ruined the evening. Our table was somewhat quieter. Our softshell crab appetizer was a single crab loaded with so much garnish that the crab taste was all but lost. We shared a large bronzino, which was perfectly prepared and deboned tableside. It was our anniversary and the staff acknowledged that with a complimentary cocktail when we got seated and desert. We had a lovely and very expensive evening."

  • "I wanted to dine outside even though the staff was reluctant. They were right as it rained like crazy but my friends from California loved the rain and we stayed outside nonetheless. The food was absolutely fantastic. I had the arctic char and the chocolate dessert. Divine."

  • "There isn't any, of course: it's the fish they are making the splash here. It must be the cost associated with sourcing the little darlings combined with Georgetown rents that make the prices positively jaw dropping. I'm never opposed to throwing lots o cash at the promise of a grand time over really good food. But there is no grand time here. The waiter read the entire menu to us like a school boy who had just learned the pledge of allegiance. Conversations were continually interrupted with unnecessary questions and the staff has apparently not yet learned that ladies should be served first. All this with views of the lazy polluted Potomac. The whole experience is akin to buying a first class ticket and ending up in coach."

  • "I had a 9;15 reservation for dinner, when I got there the table was not ready so we were seated at the bar. The bartender was great, very friendly, gave great recommendations and remembered my name. table was ready at 9:50. I'm not complaining I had the whole branzino that was outstanding, however they only had the choice of 2 sides a potato or artichokes, we ordered both. Potatoes were bad and they had no alternative starch. Server was very nice he knew we didn't like potatoes so he brought us bread and complimentary salads. I wish they had more choices of sides especially since the potato (which everyone eats potato) was smoky flavored and I wasn't feeling it .I would go back, the place has a great ambience and is very carb conscious:))"

  • "Be prepared for a long wait to get a table, even with a reservation. The food is excellent once it gets to the table but everything before and after is overrated. This restaurant is more a place to see and to be seen than to enjoy a pleasant and relaxing meal."
