Fifth FloorExcellent food but not quite enoughOur dinner at Fifth Floor was delicious, no doubt about it. But for my taste (and pocketbook), the amount served was too small -- I'm a big guy, and I need a little more food on the plate, especially when it tastes as good as the delicious octopus confit and the veal three ways. The service a bit lackluster, although I suffered from naught -- just thought it could have been a bit snappier, especially after we were seated and had to wait a while for some attention. All in all, great food and atmosphere, but the portion sizes need to be cranked up a little.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMGREAT eveningI selected Fifth Floor for a business dinner and we were very pleased with the experience. The wine list was great, and we selected individual meals vs the Chef's menu and we couldn't have gone wrong either way. The first, second, third, and dessert were all amazing. Both the Halibut and Salmon were delicious options along with the Pork medley. It's a must try.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good but maybe not worth the $My wife and I had dinner here with some out-of-town friends and their young child. Definitely not an ideal place for kids however the entire staff was very attentive to our needs so that turned out to not be an issue. We all got the Tasting Menu which for the most part was very good but pricey at $95 each. And it might leave some still feeling hungry. However it was a great way to try different things on the a la carte menu. The consensus was it was all very good with the possible exception of the veal cooked three ways. Overall I would recommend this more for date night, business lunch, or after-work drinks. Not sure we'll ever go back because it wasn't an amazing experience, more of a 'worth your time'-type place.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was our first time thereIt was our first time there and we will definitely go back. It was exquisite all around.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and serviceWe had dinner here for our anniversary and enjoyed the food and presentation very much. The servers were very attentive, explaining every entree and helping us pick a wine in our budget that would go with our orders. If I had any complaint, they may have been a tad too attentive, where we would have liked to be left alone a bit more. They meant well.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstandingEasy to get a reservation here. Outstanding food. Very good service. Ambiance is chic, but mellow. You could wear dressy jeans or a suit. Great place for a special occasion.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMSuperb Special Occasion TreatWe had a superb anniversary dinner Tuesday. When we were each given a single piece of bread at first, I was a bit concerned, but immediately upon our finishing another was placed on our plates, and a more pleasant and helpful waiter couldn't be imagined. My wife has a couple of tricky dietary restrictions which were accommodated to a fault. From the amuse bouche to the complimentary second course for my wife when she ordered one fewer than I, to the complimentary (and preposterously artfully presented) desert when we had demurred on that; from the magnificent octopus confit and ridiculously wonderful suckling pig, there was simply nothing to be faulted and everything to be savored and delighted in. All in all, a truly wonderful experience.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative, satisfying foodCreative, satisfying food preparations with great wine selections and delicious desserts.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat service...creative foodFood was mostly excellent which is expected for a $95 tasting menu. Unfortunately, it was marred by a few overly salted mushrooms (the braised goat and veal was slightly oversalted for us but probably normal for most people) and an amuse bouche before the desert that was mostly sour tasting (probably to prep for the sweet
Service was excellent...a bit overkill on changing silverware but that's to keep you from mixing flavors.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceThe Fifth Floor was excellent. The food is delicious and well presented. The service was attentive but not hovering. They were professional and informative without being 'haute rude'. It was so loud where we were originally seated that we asked to be moved. We were moved easily and graciously. My duck was superb and the chocolate bombe we shared was terrific. We were celebrating our anniversary and I would return for another special occasion.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food and Even Better ServiceI took my husband for his 50th Birthday and it was really, really nice. It was also neat to see a celebrity dining there. I probably should not say her name, but she just started by with the show, Biggest Loser, and she is a tough trainer. She was really pretty in person. I pretended to not see her after I realized it was her.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMPrix Fix all the wayFifth floor definitely delivers delicious food, artfully arranged, tastes well thought out. We did the tasting with the wine pairings and it seemed a little jumbled as far as taste combinations at times. The Reisling served with the duck liver was so dessert wine-like it was almost too much for the liver - and the grains of paradise only amplified the contrast. Entering a sake was interesting but seemed to not quite fit. However, everything tasted delicious, even when it was so-so in execution in total. The chef's take on linguica with eggs and burnt toast that his mother made turned into a delicious sauce with all the charcoal of that burnt toast, but none of the bitter. Service was excellent, and attentive.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went to Fifth Floor toWe went to Fifth Floor to celebrate a birthday and then leave early at 7:30 pm to go to a show at the Curran. They seated us promptly and gave really remarkable service. The food was excellent and memorable. The wine list is 24 pages long! They also had lovely desserts and got us out on time.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a very nice time atWe had a very nice time at Fifth Floor. The food was delicious. I'm not sure I'd pay that much for the portions that were served but it's not like we didn't know going in. One needs to know they'll drop some serious change for an ambiance that might not quite match up to it.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMYes & Yes!I can't say enough complimentary things about Fifth Floor. There's a reason nearly every review mentions the service -- it's because it's flawless. From the wonderful servers who know the food & can explain each item intelligently and passionately -- to a manager who stops by your table personally to greet you and make you feel welcome -- to the bartender who crafts incredible signature cocktails - to the chef de cuisine who came out from the kitchen to say "hello" -- it's a fabulous harmony of graciousness and deliciousness!
The food is intricate without being fussy and simply impresses with its inventiveness and clarity of flavor. The menu sings with a singular culinary "voice" and I was delighted to be present for the concert. BRAVO!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderfulCelebrating my birthday. Had the wine pairing menu. Cannot say what was our favourite. It was all delicious. Each and every flavour. The sommelier also knew her wines and the pairings were perfect. Up there as one of our top three. We were made to feel very welcome before they knew we were celebrating. When desert came my husband went to them and asked to put a message on there and our waiter had said they already had. It was lovely, he had taken 20 years off the age - made me smile.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMYumTasting menu with pairings were great! Super place to celebrate life.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Dining Experience! My husband and I were celebrating our 12th anniversary. We had made last minute reservations but had no trouble getting in. The staff, from our waiter to the supplemental staff were excellent! Our waiter was very attentive but not overwhelming. He was also very knowledgeable as were all the staff and made excellent recommendations. The food was excellent! Portions were just right and our waiter made recommendations of wine pairings that really worked well - even giving me a half glass of two different wines for each of my final two courses. Finally, they came out with a plate of small tastings of cookies/desserts with a "Happy Anniversary" plate. It was a nice touch. I look forward to coming back again!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was a wonderful diningThis was a wonderful dining experience. I am kicking myself for never coming before. Great vibe, attentive service, and the food - wow!4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMLizWe had dinner on Saturday night while visiting San Francisco from Boston, our experience was phenomenal dinner. The food was amazing and everyone we encountered at the restaurant was so helpful and accommodating. Trying Chef Baz’s food is definitely worth the trip (even from Boston).. Will definitely go back when I am back in San Francisco.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is a great restaurant,This is a great restaurant, food was really good and even though we were there close to 2 hours it didn't feel like it. The bread was great and could have filled up just on that. We were going to a show so we could not do the 5 course dinner which we were told was a 2.5 hour seating but enjoyed the al a carte menu which was delicious. Will definitely go back.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMMust tryWhat a great dining experience. We enjoyed everything on the tasting menu.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Fifth Floor does an amazingThe Fifth Floor does an amazing job of accommodating both a fine dining experience and a more casual dinner. The bar area is comfortable and inviting with a great menu. The bartender and staff are very knowledgeable. Their friendly, welcoming service makes the Fifth Floor a reliable option for an excellent low-key meal. However, if you are in the mood to make dinner an event, the restaurant itself is an excellent choice for fine dining. Their menu is refined and their wine selection is stellar.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect Pairing, Warm StaffWonderful food and wine pairing. Had the black cod, which was perfectly prepared. But the staff made my dining experience excellent, everyone was warm and attentive, especially Matthew Brown, the Maitre D. I was dining solo at Fifth Floor during a business trip yet felt anything but alone with the wonderful Fith Floor staff4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful ExperienceWe had a wonderful time at Fifth Floor, celebrating my wife's birthday. Everyone was warm, friendly, unostentatious, knowledgeable, and attentive. The place itself is hip yet cozy.
We ordered off the a la carte menu. The food here is revelatory, unearthly fresh and vivid, comparing favorably to the very best SF can offer. My wife tried the signature uni flan, indescribably delicious. The wagyu steak was redolent of the grass and air the cow had lived on in Montana, less fatty, more meaty, more honest than any other beef I know. Cheeses at the end were fabulous. Wines by the glass suggested by the sommelier perfected the experience.
We can't wait to return.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was very inventive...whileThe food was very inventive...while most other establishments emphasize intensity, we enjoyed the subtle, nuanced food. I nice departure from the usual.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMHidden GemNeeded a place to celebrate with some coworkers (and my boss) that everyone could enjoy and wasn't unreasonably expensive. The cocktails we ordered before dinner were all delicious and the liquor selection is one that I haven't seen in San Francisco, anywhere. Each staff member smiled, introduced themselves by name and made themselves available for any help that was needed. Each plate was delicious and I will definitely be back.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat very happy best mealGreat very happy best meal I have ever had. I'm from the east coast and go out to eat every week this restaurant one of the best3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMVERY noisy. Could not hearVERY noisy. Could not hear discriptions of food. Tasting menu highly recommended. Seemed like staff were flustered or disorganized. Only brought half of drink order to the table and had to be reminded after waiting approx. 15 minutes. Food flavors were excellent except for the ravioli, which was too salty. Loved the different textures. Presentations were WOW! I would go back, but probably make the reservations for first seating to try to prevent some of the issues with service.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMEpic Saturday Night!!I hosted a party of 6 for a special Saturday Night Dinner. We chose the chef's special tasting menu and were pleasently surprised with every dish. The service, atmosphere was off the hook. Every aspect, memorable.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMThe meal was amazing. TheThe meal was amazing. The Chef is a master at combining flavors and textures. The service was amazing and the wine list very well done.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMHighly recommendIt was a real pleasure. I can't say enough about how wonderful the service was. We wanted a vegetarian meal and they did a great job of making a tasty meal.3/14/2013 12:00:00 AMwe loved this place. Not onlywe loved this place. Not only was the food absolutely delicious (best swordfish ever, no exaggeration), but the service was attentive, professional and kind. They really made our anniversary a wonderful night to remember.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMA treat before the the theater.Five star food and service..every time! Going to Golden Gate theater? Two blocks away. We just love the attention to detail and their seasonal menus. Then there's the wine list. Pappy Van Winkle on the bourbon menu is a very nice touch. Simply a great dining experience.1/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
