A word from Fat Hen
Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country cuisine. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. We also deal with local farmers to provide a great source of fresh farm vegetables to enhance your dining experience.Continued

  • "Superb food and service. Best onion soup I've ever had. Fried chicken lives were to die for!"

  • "Food was delicious, I had the butcher's steak and the crab soup, both were tasty and cooked perfectly. Love Fat Hen, vibrant atmosphere and friendly service."

  • "This was our first visit. 3 adults, 3 children (10,8,5). We were quickly seated on time for our reservation, even though the restaurant was quite busy. Service was delightul. Food was great. The fries were delicious, and were stolen from the kids' plates. Shrimp grits were good, quiche was very good and less dense than the usual. The Fat Pepper cocktail was spicy and yummy! Food service was timely. Kids were given kids menu with crayons in a jar. The kids kept asking when we could go back. They loved their food (kid chicken tenders, brisket with mac and cheese, breakfast burrito)."

  • "I never write a review but I have to sing praises for the fun & funky Fat Hen. After a 45 minute drive, we arrived to a jammed parking lot with cars from all over the country. I thought we were going to have to wait forever, but we were seated quickly. Our server, Grace, did a great job of keeping the amazing food coming. We sampled the coffee cake muffins which were insanely delicious! I ordered the special omelette with gruyere, mushrooms, spinach, etc with an arugula salad on top, and my son ordered a creme brulee french toast sandwich. (Too difficult to explain but simply delicious.) I think the eggs in my omelette were collected that morning. The staff was super friendly and the service was quick but not rushed. A great start to anyday"

  • "Made a reservation 2 months in advance with no specific requests. We were seated on the indoor porch that smelled a little funky with no air conditioning on a hot night . Waitress was very nice. Food was good. Outdoor seating looked nice but it was 100 degrees outside so maybe in the spring or fall. Would be a nice place to stop if you are on Johns Island."

  • "The atmosphere was nice, but relaxed. I started with a glass of SAINT HILAIRE-BLANQUETTE, a sparkling white wine which was really nice, not overly sweet, and no bitterness. We ordered the french onion soup, and the fried green tomatoes. Both were very good. The tomatoes- fried and covered with a tomato and pepper mixture, and a few dollops of goat cheese pimiento cheese on the plate. The cheese is good spread on their very crusty bread. My main course was coq au vin - Seriously, one of the best I have ever had! The sauce was so tasty and the chicken, cooked just perfectly. Our waitress was very attentive, but not intrusive, and our courses were well timed. We live several hours away, but I have to plan to get there again! Mmm.. coq au vin."

  • "Our dinner last week was wonderful in all respects. We arrived 30 minutes early for an 8:30 reservation, expecting to need to sit in the bar until our table was ready, but we were seated as soon as we arrived. My wife enjoyed the special appetizer of heirloom tomatoes with arugula and the special entree of grilled swordfish with seasonal vegetables. I had best-tasting wedge salad I've ever had (well worth the $11), followed by the seared grouper, which was just outstanding. The Earthquake Zin was also superb. Our waiter provided very good service without being overbearing. We try to eat at the Fat Hen every year on vacation in the area, and we will certainly return."

  • "The food at Fat Hen was beyond good and the service was exceptional. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. Our waiter, Josh, was very friendly, personable and hard working. We could not have asked for better service or food."

  • "I called the restaurant ahead to inform the hostess of my mother's birthday so the waiter could recognize her by serving a small dessert with a candle as they did earlier in the year for my birthday. The waiter asked if it was her birthday and she replied, "yes" and he respond, "Happy Birthday" and gave me the check to pay. I was very disappointed that the restaurant did not recognize her 69th birthday.. So sad. I booked the reservation 3 weeks ahead so I could provided my mom with a special day. I wished it could have worked as I had planned..."

  • "I like the ambience...but food was just ok. Fish of the day was dry...with meager sauce laced across top. Veggies were soggy & sparse. For dinner this was disappointing."

  • "Fat Hen is one of our top off-island go-to places for folks that visit us from out of town. The offerings are reasonably priced and are genuine southern style cooking which we like to show off for our guests. it is a bit more noisy than optimal but the service is excellent and very knowledgeable."

  • "After having a surprise visit from family- we were having a hard time finding a place for dinner (for 8 people) that didn't come with a two hours + wait on a Saturday night around 7pm. We went downtown and called numerous places. The person I spoke with at Fat Hen was generous to allow us to make a reservation on Open Table then changed it from 930pm to 815pm. It worked out perfectly! And we were able to treat our grandma for her birthday (90!!!!!). So thank you so much! Our server was great and the food was excellent. Fat Hen never disappoints us!"

  • "One of our favorites when staying on Kiawah. Food is always amazing. Noise level usually deafening which is the only negative. Go late if you want to have decent conversation. Owners and staff warm and friendly. Cocktail delicious and unique."

  • "Outstanding meal starting with the beet and arugula salad. Joann had the seared grouper special that was certainly special and I had the Shrimp and Crab which was awesome. What we love most about Fat Hen is the sauces. These were done just right for the dish. A nice bottle of Rombauer Chardonnay and topped off with the dessert special, the sticky bun bread pudding with a sour cream glaze and vanilla ice cream. We love the food so much we tolerate the noise level which is very loud throughout the restaurant. It may have been quieter on the deck, but we didn't check it out."

  • "Decided to move reservations to Fat Hen from Halls steakhouse due to weather and was pleasantly surprised how perfect the meal and service were. We started off with a bottle of Riesling and their charcuterie appetizer. The pairing was perfect, but only got better when the braised short rib arrived with a glass of Spanish red wine. To finish the perfect evening I got the key lime pie. What a wonderful experience!!!! I will see you soon."

  • "My husband and I were introduced to the Fat Hen by our son and daughter-in-law. After enjoying a wonderful brunch there with them and our two-year-old grandson, we went back by ourselves this past Sunday. The food, our server and the overall experience were just as fabulous as they were the first time. The Fat Hen is truly a neighborhood gem. We look forward to driving over from Summerville many more times for brunch and dinner!"

  • "With a greeting from the hostess and a perfect cocktail provided by a smiling bartender, you can't beat the atmosphere. Topped off by a delicious pairing of all the right food and tastes under a knowledgable very well guided server. The seating was perfect for 4 and the wait - well there wasn't one. I would recommend this to anyone traveling to the area. The Pluff Mudd Pie was to die for. A delicious end to the perfect dinner."
