Fat HenDelish! If you haven't tried the chicken livers, and even if you think you don't like them - try them, they are superb!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMTreats for the palateA delicious surprise. Very complex flavors made from simple ingredients. I will be trying to recreate these dishes at home. ravo!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways a delightThis was my fifth visit to the Fat Hen, and I hope there will be many more. From the moment we stepped in the door until the time we left we were welcomed warmly. The service continues to be impeccable, the ambiance lively and the food magnificent. Anyone who lives in or visits this area should put the Fat Hen right at the top of their 'must-do' restaurant list.6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMGo there now!We love the Fat Hen! We've been for dinner and brunch, and the food is fantastic. We love that they use so much from local farms, and everything always tastes fresh and full of flavor. There are lots of waitstaff around, so we haven't had to wait for anything. Both times we made reservations ahead of time, and we were seated immediately. It's loud inside, but it works somehow - the restaurant has a nice ambiance, and we could still hear each other even with the music and other conversations. We've recommended it to lots of people!6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMOverall the best placeIn all of Charleston. Handled our group of 9 superbly. Food and appetizers an a+. Mussels, scallops and oysters were appetizers that topped our list. Cannot overstate how much we love the fat hen.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMSeconed Time AroundOur second time at Fat Hen..the first experience , the food was good but not what we expected...this last evening was perfect...we took guests and they also quite impressed with the food..preparation, quality and the variety..not to mention the $20 wine selections. The menu has something for everyone's taste and I was truly impressed by the fact that every dish came out hot..rarely find that in any restaurant.. Nice friendly waitstaff also!! All of this should be accepted as the highest compliment since we had just come from Spoleto for three days and eaten at some of Charleston's finest restaurants..the Fat Hen was every bit as good as those.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways deliciousThe mussels are excellent! The fish , both grouper and Mahi special were delicious and well prepared. I always get a side of collards and they never disappoint......savory, slightly spicy! Service is warm and friendly. Have a signature cocktail and enjoy this great place.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMHands down some of the bestHands down some of the best food we've had in Charleston!! We had the oyster appetizer which was heaven. I had the seared grouper and my husband had the flounder dish and both were divine! This will definitely be a regular stop for us when ever we visit the area, and we can't wait for the next visit!6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was great, front of house notWe come to the Fat Hen once a year. I'm very pleased with the menu, they have some really talented chefs. However, our reservations were at 5:30 so we showed up maybe 10-15 minutes before and the front of house girl looked at us rudely and said "you know, you still have to wait until 5:30...because that's when we actually open." Whether or not she was just having a bad night or not I don't know but I'll still go again next year.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMNot to be missed! An all-around exceptional experience! Fabulous meal, excellent service, in a unique setting. We will return whenever in the area.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Fat Hen provides an "outThe Fat Hen provides an "out of the ordinary" dining experience. It is informal and has a high energy level. There are dishes that are not the normal menu items e.g. steak tartar, duck confit. The deserts are excellent and the pastry chef very competent. The bread is absolutely fantastic. The service was friendly, energetic and sincere. A very fun and tasty dining experience!5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMBest of the best! When visitors came from out of town we took them to eat all of our favorite spots in the Charleston area (82 Queen and the like). Fat Hen was hands down the best of them all. It is simply amazing. Every single person in our group was blown away by their meal and the perfection of the food. While the other restaurants had very tasty offerings and we all left happy, Fat Hen still has us talking about how good it was days after our visit. It is one of those places that you long to return to, and is a sure winner. You CANNOT go wrong with Fat Hen!
*Tip: If you want to insure you can get into the Fat Hen without a substantial wait, check online a week before your visit to see if you can get a reservation (yes, they do book up early and fast).5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat French MenuAlways a sure bet. Great brunch. Has charm and good food. Outside seating is comfortable and romantic at night.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMoff Kiawah Is. restaruantAbout 20 min drive but the food was worth the effort. Small, cozy, very laid back5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMTried and TrueWe LOVE Fat hen; we always try to take visitors here if time allows - since it is off the beaten path it's not always something people have heard of; which we also like! My parents now live here and it is also there favorite spot. My aunt and uncle; foodies, from Birmingham exclaimed on their last visit here when we took them to Fat Hen that of all the places they have been in Charleston Fat Hen was the best hands down!5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat brunch, but too much noiseWe tried this place for Snday Brunch, and the food was great for the price. $10 for a carafe of great Mimosas, as well as other specials. Shrimp & Grits and Fried Green Tomatoes were outstanding. We chose an inside table, and the noise level was unbelievable. I can take a high noise level, but this was like the level of watching a soccer match in a bar in Australia. We literally could not hear what the people at our table were saying to each other. The staff was super nice and friendly, but it would have been nice if they would have asked the shouters to tone it down. We had to leave early just so we could hear each other talk. We will be back, but we will request a table outside.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMFat Hen on St John's Island, SCWhat a great place! Two friends and I had dinner here Saturday night while staying on Kiawah Island. The restaurant is decorated in a homey, casual way but with thought and care. Drinks were delicious and reasonably priced (Hen's Cup and Blueberry Mojitos). We had an 8:00 p.m. reservation and had to wait 20 minutes for our table but it was worth it. I had the light chicken special of the night, chicken that had been marinated in Sweet Tea vodka, grilled and served with several vegetables, including sunchokes. Tender and juicy, it didn't taste like a "light" dish at all. We didn't have dessert (too much of their warm delicious bread before dinner). We would definitely return. Make a reservation if you go, especially on a weekend night.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstandingWould not visit Charleston without having dinner at the Fat Hen. Whatever you order, rest assured it will be outstanding!5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent! Our reservationExcellent! Our reservation was spot on time and the food was excellent as usual!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMOur First StopIt's become somewhat of a tradition for our family to have dinner at Fat Hen when we visit the Charleston area. Consistently excellent food and service with an upbeat, festive atmosphere. It's a little loud so perhaps not great for a romantic night out but it's perfect for starting off our vacation.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was a beautiful experience. It was a beautiful experience. The food and ambiance was fabulous! All of the wait staff pitches in to help each other.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMFat Hen was fantastic as always.Mussels fixed by any of the recommended ways are the best in the region. The pork chop is always my favorite. Very unique cole slaw, try it it will surprise your palate.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautifulGreat service, impeccable food, wonderful ambience. For about $50 per person, we had two appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert. A bit pricy but well worth it!5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMLives up to expectationsThird time there. After the first, have taken friends and relatives. Each time the food and service were excellent. Made reservations ahead which is recommended. It's busy and seatings are full because it is so good. Excellent low country seafood, great appetizers, most made in house.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth it, but be ready to shoutThe food at the Fat Hen is incredible. The drinks are amazing, The staff and service are wonderful. The acoustics are lousy!!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat little spot!Restaurant opens for dinner at 5:30, bar is open at 4. We had a reservation for 6pm but were in the area quite early (around 5pm) so we decided to have a few drinks at the bar while we waited. They ended up seating us at 5:30, which was fine with us! It did not take long at all for the restaurant to fill up after that.
Both my date and I are not able to eat very much food in one sitting so we went with a few appetizers (unfortunate, some of the main dishes seemed fantastic). We ordered the fried duck livers with mushroom cream sauce, foie gras terrine, crab soup and a cheese plate, which won a coin flip with the charcuterie plate, featuring sausages made on-site with herbs grown on property. All was exceptional and we would return!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMAll around great placeWe like good food and we like to bring along our kids too! Fat Hen is great about utilizing the food from local farms, so everything is fresh. They have imaginative recipes to complement their seasonal fare as well. Furthermore, they also have tried and true dishes like the shrimp and pasta that are always great when you know you just want to have something you are familiar with and will enjoy. AND they have a great kids menu. Overall it can't be beat for any occasion!5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved itGreat little place. We are on vacation on Kiawah and heard about this restaurant and tried it. It was very, very good.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGemThe Fat Hen was recommended to me by someone I met on the plane into town. I sure am glad I took that lead! My whole family loved it! You have to try the curry mussels and the mud pie!!5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMWe made a 9:30pm reservationWe made a 9:30pm reservation but wish we had arrived earlier. The server rushed us along a bit, since it was obvious she was trying to be finished for the night. She didn't look us in the eyes, she rushed us in taking our orders, and she never came to check on our experience during the meal (likely because she already had started the side work). I highly recommend the restaurant because of good food and atmosphere, but I suggest getting an earlier reservation to avoid becoming an unwanted late guest.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMTwo great meals !Love the Shrimp pasta and the Coq Au Vin chicken wonderful.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AM2nd time and can't wait to2nd time and can't wait to go back. Wonderful food and exceptional service.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always Fat Hen did notAs always Fat Hen did not disappoint. A great place.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMTables are a bit close. ItTables are a bit close. It felt like we were sharing a table with the couple next to us.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMTerrific every time!We keep coming back because it's consistently wonderful.4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGood for a casual night outThe food was delicious. We had the mussels with pitou sauce and they were wonderful. The service was very good and the wine list was more than adequate. The only negative is the noise level. With concrete floors and closely spaced tables, it was hard to hear over the ambient noise from other tables.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMfood was good, but some offood was good, but some of the vegetable were heavy with a lot of bacon. Too salty.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were a group of 6 ladiesWe were a group of 6 ladies who wanted a delicious meal and some more local ingredients. This restaurant was fantastic! We all tried 3 different appetizers...including escargot and fried green tomatoes...and we all had the shrimp and grits along with a side of collards. Once the meal arrived, we all took our first bites and we were in heaven. the flavor and presentation was right on target! We barely talked again until we were done with our meal. The only problem is we just wish we had a Fat Hen back in CT!!!4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMI love this restaurantThe food was great, but I don't think you should have taken the BBQ duck sandwich off the menu. I don't think you should have taken it off the menu because that is what I came there for, I LOVED IT!I bet a bunch of other people were sad too.

Completely worth the drive4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstandingWonderful experience- we had a reservation for Sunday Brunch- seated promptly. Our waitress Nikki was outstanding. She offered many specials from memory-pretty impressive. Food was wonderful- specials and items off the menu - service was what you would hope for - Great !!!!
I can't say enough - we were all impressed !!!!!4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous!Great meal and dining experience at Fat Hen, as always. This is one of my favorite places in Charleston to eat!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMMust go oftenI wish there were more restaurants in this part of South Carolina as good. Can compete with any NYC restaurant.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food; great serviceWhen headed to Kiaweh Island, we past the Fat Hen and 'laughed about it.' While at the conference, we were encouraged to try it for Low Country cooking. When we went there, we left 'raving about it.' Great food; great service; great ambiance.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, a great diningAs always, a great dining experience. Several 'firsts' for us on this occasion, and the risk was worth it (we tried foie gras for the first time).4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMAs usual, our food was superb. As usual, our food was superb. We brought 2 friends that work in a Summerville restaurant for 27 years, and they fell in love. Thanks to a gracious staff that seated once we arrived a bit late, and a very observant server...Tia I think. We will continue to recommend Fat Hen!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst visit, definitely won'tFirst visit, definitely won't be the last. First impression, very welcoming, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for what was actually (menu-wise) a fine dine restaurant (so fine casual?). Next impression, service (from hostess to server & backwaiters to manager) - very pleasant, laid back, welcoming and knowledgeable. Having been born and raised in the South, my husband and I know genuine Southern hospitality when we see it and that's what we got. Finally, the food. Tasty, creative, with excellent presentation. Also, great craft beer selection. Bonus? Not in downtown Charleston! My husband hates the traffic/parking there. After our dinner at Fat Hen, he asked that we please come here every time we visit the area. Go. You'll love it.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMI had not been to Fat HenI had not been to Fat Hen in a while, mainly because they have very limited reservations for parties of 2. The noise level was much louder than I remember. The food was great as always.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful Italian. We go atWonderful Italian. We go at least twice when we are in the area.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWe love Fat HenOur favorite restaurant in the Charleston area (and that says a lot).4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Family ExperienceHad a great evening at The Fat Hen this week while visting the Charleston area on Spring Break. The hostess was very accomodating for our group of 8 and the menu had gluten-free items that were a treat for our child with Celiac's disease. The atmosphere was lively and the food was GREAT. This was our second visit to The Fat Hen and is a family favorite.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
