A word from Fat Hen
Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country cuisine. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. We also deal with local farmers to provide a great source of fresh farm vegetables to enhance your dining experience.Continued

  • "We have been coming to this restaurant as a family for at least 6 years. Food is still superb, creative and relaxed atmosphere. MY only complaint it is is a bit noisy. I loved the swordfish special and everything else was excellent."

  • "We enjoyed an excellent dinner at the Fat Hen. The service was fantastic. The mussels were outstanding. All of us enjoyed our meals."

  • "Love French food and this was good food but the place is run down and kind of dirty. The main entrance in the rear has a horrible parking lot with ruts everywhere. The garbage and kitchen overflow is easily in view as you walk to the entrance. We were sat on a porch and my view out my window was a rusty old dirty metal shelf with chain and rope hanging off of it and strewn on the floor. The woman's bathroom not the cleanest. Would not recommend."

  • "We've been here a number of times, and it's always good. Considering the prices though, it should be great. The fried green tomatoes and my husband's steak were delicious. The crab soup was good but not great. My shrimp and crab entree was too salty, and my son's chicken tenders appeared to be the frozen kind. That's inexcusable at this price point."

  • "My husband and I dined here based on a recommendation from friends. We both had fish which was outstanding! 20 dollar bottle of wine night was a lovely addition to a great meal! Delish!"

  • "We ate dinner here the other night. It was amazing! Had the muscles for an app. Dinner I had lamb shank and hubby had shrimp and grits. For dessert we had a chocolate banana walnut bread pudding. Everything was so good. We will be back!"

  • "Had brunch on a rainy Sunday. Be sure to make a reservation because when I arrived people were being told there was a 3 hour wait! Blame it on the weather and a holiday weekend though. Anyway on to the food, I started with a spicy Bloody Mary which was fantastic! For an appetizer I had the French Onion Soup and it was quite good. Would have liked the crouton to have been crisp but I really enjoyed it regardless. Also shared the Fried Green Tomatoes on the waitresses recommendation. Nice and tart with a pepper relish and pimento goat cheese. For my main course it was Shrimp and Grits, living in Charleston I'm committed to trying it whenever I go and the Fat Hen did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked shrimp with bacon cheese grits. Loved it!"

  • "My husband and I went here on a Sunday around noon for brunch; many people recommended this place to us as a favorite spot for brunch, as we moved here a year ago. I had the eggs benedict and my husband had the creme brulee french toast. We shared a carafe of mimosa. Both of our meals were amazing. My eggs benedict was served on hearty toast instead of a english muffin, topped with thick canadian bacon, perfectly poached egg, and creamy holoundaise sauce; homemade crispy yummy fries accompanied it. The creme brulee french toast was perfectly cooked, with a side of their housemade sausage, amazing. Our waiter was courteous and knowledgeable about the menu items. The atmosphere is perfectly southern-rustic."

  • "The table was ready and waiting when we walked in. Nikki (our waitress) was helpful in picking out our meal. She was lively and likable -- suggested dishes, suggested wines. Food was great. Service was great."

  • "As always the Fat Hen was outstanding. Out table of four was comprised of two regulars and two first timers. We all had seafood and as we had told the first timers - The Fat Hen never cooks fish anything but perfectly. They did not disappoint. There is absolutely no doubt the Fat Hen is a Lowcountry treasure."

  • "Loved this place. We tried it on a whim, after seeing it while driving from Kiawah to Charleston to eat at a few other restaurants. This was the best meal of the trip - see list. - small order of the curry cream mussels. The only reason I didn't finish these and lick the bowl was to save room. - duck confit . first seemed like nothing special, but then combined the duck with the smoked cherries - flavor was out of this world - French onion soup/heirloom tomato appetizer special - short rib. - cinnamon bun bread pudding with raspberry caramel sauce. (I hate raspberry-flavored anything, but love actual, fresh raspberries. It was clear that fresh raspberries were used her - the dessert was amazing.) Highly recommend."

  • "I have eaten at the Fat Hen for several years now and I have enjoyed every experience. I rarely make it to Johns Island, but when I do I make sure to stop here and have at least one meal. The food is always delicious. I have eaten their dinner meals, but I am a lover of their brunch menu. If you are ever in the area and want delicious food, I would definitely recommend stopping at the Fat Hen. I highly recommend making a reservation for any number of people. That way you can get in and start eating this wonderful food immediately."

  • "This is our 4th year to have brunch at Fat Hen. When we visit, Kiawah Island, we look forward to our trip to Fat Hen. We were not disappointed this year. The food is excellent and so different. Our server, Christopher, was very informative, not only about the menu, but also about other things to check out on the island. We will be back."

  • "Our dinner here was excellent. We arrived a little early and while having a drink at the bar, the chef happened to come out. We talked to him and he told us about several items on the menu. He was obviously very good and passionate about his dishes. 4 of us had 4 different entrees. The Rib was the best I have ever had. The meat had a great taste and was falling off the bone. It is big. One person had the shrimp, one had the chicken and one had the crab cakes. All were tremendous. It was a meal that we all walked away from raving about how good our food was. The service was very good also. We would go back here without a doubt. The location is a little off the beaten oath but it is well worth it."

  • "Food was delicious. Service was timely and it was a busy night. Glad we had made reservations because even at 6 P the place was packed. people waiting when we left at 8 P. Hard to have a conversation because it the noise level was high. Tables are close together so very little privacy. Our waitress was friendly and efficient."

  • "This is a wonderful place to eat. The only complaint I can think of was the noise. It was extremely loud when we came in at about 11:30 a.m. for brunch, but was not a problem, because they placed us on the porch. The food was outstanding as was the service, and the menu was creative."

  • "We had a wonderful brunch at the Fat Hen. The bacon cheese grits were creamy and delicious as was the house cured salmon. Very cute place. Enthusiastic wait staff. The chocolate mousse cake was a great way to end our meal. Make reservations and go on the earlier side before they run out of specials!"

  • "We normally go for dinner. This was our First time for brunch. We got the same exceptional food quality. Our server, Christopher, was fantastic. He was happy to be there, had a smile on his face and a great demeanor. Not only did he provide us with phenomenal service (and menu suggestions), he did the same for all the tables in his section. What a pleasant Sunday morning!"

  • "There were seven in our party and we each ordered something different from seafood to steak and duck and it was amazing! Service could not be better. The food is local, fresh and flavorful. An incredible combination of French cuisine with low-country comfort. The key lime pie was fantastic too. We talked about our family dinner at the Fat Hen for days afterwards. We will be sure to make a return visit."

  • "I had booked the restaurant for our party of 11 well in advance. Three days before the reservation I received a call from the maître de inquiring as to whether they could put our party in the bar area in bar-height stools. As we had a 91- year old and 3- year old in our party I advised them that this would not be a safe choice. When we arrived on time for our reservation. They did not have a available table and because of the size if our party, a table was unavailable for one hour. Service was slow and meals could not be made to accommodate did allergies. Food was average at best and certainly not on par with other Charleston restaurants."

  • "Took my family to their Sunday Brunch and it was outstanding. We were seated quickly thanks to having Open Table reservations. Everyone loved their meal - Country fried steak, french toast, shrimp and grits...yum. We will definitely return!"

  • "Chef known for braising. So ordered the lamb shank which was moist, tasty, and done perfectly. My husband had the local swordfish which was a bit overdone. The key lime pie was tart and heavenly. The crowd was vibrant and very loud. Very casual and would be fun with a large group. Tough to get to without a car while visiting Charleston."
