A word from Fat Hen
Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country cuisine. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. We also deal with local farmers to provide a great source of fresh farm vegetables to enhance your dining experience.Continued

  • "Fat Hen is one of our top off-island go-to places for folks that visit us from out of town. The offerings are reasonably priced and are genuine southern style cooking which we like to show off for our guests. it is a bit more noisy than optimal but the service is excellent and very knowledgeable."

  • "After having a surprise visit from family- we were having a hard time finding a place for dinner (for 8 people) that didn't come with a two hours + wait on a Saturday night around 7pm. We went downtown and called numerous places. The person I spoke with at Fat Hen was generous to allow us to make a reservation on Open Table then changed it from 930pm to 815pm. It worked out perfectly! And we were able to treat our grandma for her birthday (90!!!!!). So thank you so much! Our server was great and the food was excellent. Fat Hen never disappoints us!"

  • "Great place to bring the parents. They found it a bit too loud for their tastes, but the food is one-of-a kind."

  • "One of our favorites when staying on Kiawah. Food is always amazing. Noise level usually deafening which is the only negative. Go late if you want to have decent conversation. Owners and staff warm and friendly. Cocktail delicious and unique."

  • "Outstanding meal starting with the beet and arugula salad. Joann had the seared grouper special that was certainly special and I had the Shrimp and Crab which was awesome. What we love most about Fat Hen is the sauces. These were done just right for the dish. A nice bottle of Rombauer Chardonnay and topped off with the dessert special, the sticky bun bread pudding with a sour cream glaze and vanilla ice cream. We love the food so much we tolerate the noise level which is very loud throughout the restaurant. It may have been quieter on the deck, but we didn't check it out."

  • "With so many food choices in the Charleston, Kiawah, St. John's area there is much competition. Fat Hen had probably the best food I have ever had in the area. Warm, cozy atmosphere, great service! Highly recommend!"

  • "This was our second visit to fat hen. We used trip advisor to make the reservations. The fried chicken liver apps are perfect. The mains were all very well prepared. Service was fast, friendly and very efficient. We will be back, to this little gem."

  • "Decided to move reservations to Fat Hen from Halls steakhouse due to weather and was pleasantly surprised how perfect the meal and service were. We started off with a bottle of Riesling and their charcuterie appetizer. The pairing was perfect, but only got better when the braised short rib arrived with a glass of Spanish red wine. To finish the perfect evening I got the key lime pie. What a wonderful experience!!!! I will see you soon."

  • "We vacation on Kiawah Island once a year, and never miss our date-night-out at Fat Hen. Fantastic food --- all fresh, both from the ocean and from local farmers. Great food selections and something for everyone. The waitstaff does an amazing job with service and knowledge about each dish and wine offerings. Truly our favorite."

  • "Your only problem will be choosing only one entree. Delicious, out of the ordinary choices. We were there for Sunday brunch and can recommend the country - fried steak with collards and the brisket macaroni sandwich. Mudd Pie for dessert."

  • "My husband and I were introduced to the Fat Hen by our son and daughter-in-law. After enjoying a wonderful brunch there with them and our two-year-old grandson, we went back by ourselves this past Sunday. The food, our server and the overall experience were just as fabulous as they were the first time. The Fat Hen is truly a neighborhood gem. We look forward to driving over from Summerville many more times for brunch and dinner!"

  • "With a greeting from the hostess and a perfect cocktail provided by a smiling bartender, you can't beat the atmosphere. Topped off by a delicious pairing of all the right food and tastes under a knowledgable very well guided server. The seating was perfect for 4 and the wait - well there wasn't one. I would recommend this to anyone traveling to the area. The Pluff Mudd Pie was to die for. A delicious end to the perfect dinner."

  • "Was incredibly noisy on a Saturday night. Could not hear others in my group of four even though at a small table. Have been there on week nights when it was quieter. May not go back on Saturday nights."

  • "We have been coming to this restaurant as a family for at least 6 years. Food is still superb, creative and relaxed atmosphere. MY only complaint it is is a bit noisy. I loved the swordfish special and everything else was excellent."

  • "Nice dinner, cozy place, but didn't live up to all the hype."

  • "Love French food and this was good food but the place is run down and kind of dirty. The main entrance in the rear has a horrible parking lot with ruts everywhere. The garbage and kitchen overflow is easily in view as you walk to the entrance. We were sat on a porch and my view out my window was a rusty old dirty metal shelf with chain and rope hanging off of it and strewn on the floor. The woman's bathroom not the cleanest. Would not recommend."

  • "We've been here a number of times, and it's always good. Considering the prices though, it should be great. The fried green tomatoes and my husband's steak were delicious. The crab soup was good but not great. My shrimp and crab entree was too salty, and my son's chicken tenders appeared to be the frozen kind. That's inexcusable at this price point."

  • "My husband and I dined here based on a recommendation from friends. We both had fish which was outstanding! 20 dollar bottle of wine night was a lovely addition to a great meal! Delish!"

  • "We ate dinner here the other night. It was amazing! Had the muscles for an app. Dinner I had lamb shank and hubby had shrimp and grits. For dessert we had a chocolate banana walnut bread pudding. Everything was so good. We will be back!"

  • "My husband and I went here on a Sunday around noon for brunch; many people recommended this place to us as a favorite spot for brunch, as we moved here a year ago. I had the eggs benedict and my husband had the creme brulee french toast. We shared a carafe of mimosa. Both of our meals were amazing. My eggs benedict was served on hearty toast instead of a english muffin, topped with thick canadian bacon, perfectly poached egg, and creamy holoundaise sauce; homemade crispy yummy fries accompanied it. The creme brulee french toast was perfectly cooked, with a side of their housemade sausage, amazing. Our waiter was courteous and knowledgeable about the menu items. The atmosphere is perfectly southern-rustic."

  • "Had brunch on a rainy Sunday. Be sure to make a reservation because when I arrived people were being told there was a 3 hour wait! Blame it on the weather and a holiday weekend though. Anyway on to the food, I started with a spicy Bloody Mary which was fantastic! For an appetizer I had the French Onion Soup and it was quite good. Would have liked the crouton to have been crisp but I really enjoyed it regardless. Also shared the Fried Green Tomatoes on the waitresses recommendation. Nice and tart with a pepper relish and pimento goat cheese. For my main course it was Shrimp and Grits, living in Charleston I'm committed to trying it whenever I go and the Fat Hen did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked shrimp with bacon cheese grits. Loved it!"

  • "The table was ready and waiting when we walked in. Nikki (our waitress) was helpful in picking out our meal. She was lively and likable -- suggested dishes, suggested wines. Food was great. Service was great."

  • "As always the Fat Hen was outstanding. Out table of four was comprised of two regulars and two first timers. We all had seafood and as we had told the first timers - The Fat Hen never cooks fish anything but perfectly. They did not disappoint. There is absolutely no doubt the Fat Hen is a Lowcountry treasure."

  • "Loved this place. We tried it on a whim, after seeing it while driving from Kiawah to Charleston to eat at a few other restaurants. This was the best meal of the trip - see list. - small order of the curry cream mussels. The only reason I didn't finish these and lick the bowl was to save room. - duck confit . first seemed like nothing special, but then combined the duck with the smoked cherries - flavor was out of this world - French onion soup/heirloom tomato appetizer special - short rib. - cinnamon bun bread pudding with raspberry caramel sauce. (I hate raspberry-flavored anything, but love actual, fresh raspberries. It was clear that fresh raspberries were used her - the dessert was amazing.) Highly recommend."
