A word from Fat Hen
Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country flourishes, sourced from the finest local produce farmers. Neuville’s tangy-but-tender BBQ Scallops are first marinated in a house-made pomegranate barbecue sauce, bacon wrapped and grilled to perfection. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. In addition Fat hen offers catering services. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "From fried shrimp to innovative dishes with fresh local to table veggies, the food here continues to be great - no frozen fish here! The only problem is the noise level in the restaurant. We were hoping that the new cork floor would make a difference, but it is not enough to make a dent in this busy place--definitely not suitable for a quiet dinner. The noise level is somewhat better on the outside porch, but overall this is a great place to have a wonderful meal."

  • "We enjoyed our brunch at the Fat Hen. If you are in the mood for mimosas or a cocktail - they've got a great list! We enjoyed our meal and had a variety of their yummy desserts afterwards. Would go again!"

  • "As always, a good choice, one of the guest went with one of the dinner specials, fish in local vegetables made into a succotash, was excellent. The other guest ordered the mahi-mahi fish dish, with local grown vegetable. We have always enjoyed everything we have ordered at the Fat Hen. Chef Fred Neuville, is always so creative with local foods we enjoy trying what he will make next."

  • "We chose the Fat Hen to help celebrate 3 years of marriage. We loved our first visit last year. The food was delicious and I normally pass on dessert, but we shared the chocolate moose. Don't pass on anything here! They used a lot of locally grown items in my chicken dish."

  • "Warm atmosphere coupled with a staff that makes an effort to please. Top that with good food and what more can one ask?"

  • "Recently ate here while on vacation on Kiawah Island with 2 girlfriends, at the advice of a shopowner on Kiawah. I can't remember all the dished we had, but one of us is vegetarian and really liked her spaghetti squash dish. I had Beets Salad and one of the special mains. All the dishes looked and were great, concocted of fresh, local ingredients and uniquely spiced but never overbearing. Service was very attentive w/o being obnoxious. About 25 mins. from Kiawah but well worth the trip."

  • "Great southern cooking, Fun way to experience the outskirts of Charleston where the locals dine. Casual fine food."

  • "It was not our first visit to the "hen" so we weren't surprised by just how good it is. My adult children never miss a chance to go there when they are in town too. Consistent quality is top notch and while they may tweak a dish here and there it always seemed to go up a notch. Nice tinkering when this happens. First timers will likely have their expectations surpassed. Regulars just know it will be great all over again."

  • "We love the Fat Hen for both Brunch and Dinner. First time sitting at Table in bar area. Probably wouldn't want that table again on a busy Sunday."

  • "We had a great brunch with friends from out of town. They loved it."

  • "Excellent food and service. Very noisy. However, much quieter on enclosed porch where there are a limited number of tables."

  • "Food is always outstanding and inventive. Service was attentive without being intrusive. I only wished I lived closer, so I could be a regular. Whenever we get down to Charleston tho, we always make a point to eat here."

  • "My family ate at the Fat Hen for the first time in January of 2014. We just returned to the Charleston area and the Fat Hen was a must and they didn't disappoint. The Mahi Mahi special was excellent. I would definately recommend this place if you are in the Charleston area."

  • "The restaurant was so loud I could not hear the person sitting less than one foot from me. I think permanent ear damage could be a result of dining here. Other than this, it was wonderful!"

  • "I loved everything, but would go back just to have the fried green tomatoes again with the goat cheese based pimento cheese. The trigger fish was cooked perfectly and served with a couscous and spring vegetable combination. Outstanding!"

  • "We went here on the recommendation of a "beach friend" we met and were so glad we did. The mussels with curry cream sauce appetizer was fabulous! My husband wants to go back next week and order the full size! My entree of shrimp and house made pasta was perfection. Cute atmosphere, a little noisy but who cares when the food is so amazing. It's lively, great service and I only wish it was located back in my home town!"

  • "Excellent food. Good wine selection. Courteous service. Too loud. Fat Hen is halfway between a bar atmosphere and a top quality restaurant."

  • "Just like momma use to make it, only better and momma didnthxve to cook! From the back porch martini to the fried oysters and pistou oysters; from red wine to pork chops and everything in between, we enjoyed every bite! Our waitress, Chris was awesome! My out of town guests were blown away by the food, in a good way. So happy Fat Hen is on our side of Charleston."

  • "The food was wonderful and the server was delightful. Her suggestions were spot on. The prices were great. The place was quite busy when we arrived, but we were seated on time for our reservation. Highly recommend it!"

  • "Our Mahi over local greens was excellent! Crab soup was delicate. Took our own wine and simply paid a corkage fee. Love this place!"

  • "The family and I went there for brunch while visiting Charleston and it did not disappoint! The food lives up to the hype and waitress we had was very sweet and helpful with the menu. My kids, who are 8 and 10, loved their french toast and have made me promise to take them back. I ordered the duck gratin and it was delicious, but be warned, it is quite rich! I highly recommend making a reservation like we did because it is very popular. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "The food was great! However, there was a screaming child in there that screamed for over an hour which made for a horrible experience!! Also, I didn't notice until home that there was a $10.95 charge on my bill for "AOD". I still for the life of me can't figure out what that charge was for. We will return again and pray that there are no screaming children!"

  • "Fat Hen is one of our favorite restaurants on Johns Island, however, we might stop going there regardless of how wonderful the food has consistently been. The reason? It is "over-the-top" noisy when the restaurant is only half-full, which is almost always, and then it gets a lot worse! It's not a vibrant, ain't this cool, kind of noise. It's an echoing, my ears hurt and I can't hear you noise. I believe they added a cork floor to help diminish the decibels, however, this approach did not work out so well. Perhaps acoustic ceiling tile? Who knows, I'm not a noise reduction expert. I am, however, a guy who likes to eat great food prepared extraordinarily well and now I guess I'll have to find it elsewhere. ;>("

  • "When the restaurant is busy, which is most of the time, the noise level is so high that conversations at the table are almost impossible."

  • "I vacation in SC every year and The Fat Hen is always at the top of my "must do" list. The food never disappoints and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. The French flair makes avery dish outstanding, but the fresh fish special is always a sure bet."

  • "My parents and I enjoyed Sunday brunch at Fat Hen after going to church. There were so many items on the menu from which to choose, the decision was difficult. Each of us saw 3 or 4 different items that we wanted to order. My friend and I ordered the shrimp and grits, which was delicious. The tasso gravy was so tasty. Our waitress was attentive, and our order was promptly brought to the table. I highly recommend Fat Hen for brunch, and we will be back."

  • "Oyster with ham appetizer was superb! The pasta with shrimp sauce was very, very good - the shrimp were disappointing! They were NOT local and the difference was obvious. The NOISE level was painful- punctuated and accentuated by very loud, shrill vocalizations of mostly blond Muffies."

  • "ok, so this is our favorite place to eat, but it is lively"

  • "For an early dinner on Saturday night the place was very full and very noisy. It was very hard to choose what to eat--everything looked very good. Two of us had a daily special of striped bass on a mix of very fresh, very tasty local vegetables, all cooked to perfection in a light broth. The fish was excellent, but the vegetables were truly memorable. Among them were golden beets, Brussels sprouts, grape tomatoes, and several more. The third in our party had shrimp and grits, and reported it to be excellent as well. The bread was delicious; we learned that it had come from the local Normandy Farm Bakery. All in all, the food was amply good enough to offset the noise level. We were too busy eating to want to talk much anyway."

  • "The food was cooked to perfection. All of us ordered something different and all the meals were tasty and well prepared. The wait staff was helpful and gracious. Just a great place to go for a special evening out."

  • "I love Fat Hen and the French country blended with Low Country cooking. I've had the coq au vin twice now. It's incredible and I wonder how I will ever eat here without ordering it again. I wish I had the recipe so I could have it more than once or twice a year when I'm in town. Friendly service, nice atmosphere. Fat Hen has become an annual tradition and I'm already looking forward to next time."
