A word from Fat Canary
This high-energy bistro took over as Williamsburg's best restaurant as soon as it opened in 2004. The sophisticated but relaxed dining room sports a long bar down one side -- a favorite local watering hole -- and an open kitchen which uses fresh local and other ingredients for its creative American fare.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I eat here several times each time I visit Williamsburg annually. It has never failed to provide a superb dining experience, from the greeting to the service and, of course, the food. I would rate Fat Canary as good as any restaurant I have enjoyed ANYWHERE in the WORLD! "

  • "Excellent cuisine, well prepared and very fresh. Service and menu were at the top of the restaurant game. Love the ability to buy from their wine list or bring in wine and pay a corkage fee."

  • "A relaxed but sophisticated ambience with excellent food and service well up to the standard of metropolitan peers. This is a true gem for Williamsburg and well worth a detour to enjoy. The restaurant went out of its way to accommodate our last minute reservation-- a little flexibility goes a long way down here. Well done all round."

  • "After reading reviews, we expected to have a good meal, but it was truly great! I had the seafood special- grouper over polenta and veggies- it was fabulous and would rival a meal in any top restaurant in San Francisco. Our salads were fresh and delicious as well...all in all a fabulous dining experience in Williamsburg!"

  • "We had a great meal & attentive service. Crispy fried oysters for an appetizer. Entrees were duck over rye spaetzle (nice nutty, toasty flavor) with a "pastry purse" filled with confit; also pork chop with goat cheese souffle.Server was very attentive without hovering. Nice wine list. We really enjoyed the evening."

  • "The location was convenient, our server was outgoing and helpful and the food was tasty and prepared well. We were seated behind a pole and had to squueze by other tables to reach our own. The restaurant is fairly loud to the point of being difficult to hold a conversation. We'd probably return in warm weather and opt to dine outside."

  • "New restaurants come and go but the Fat Canary continues to shine. The food is imaginative and excellent! Would not go to Williamsburg without eating there"

  • "First time but won't be the last. One of the best meals I've ever had. Not inexpensive, but worth it."

  • "This was an amazing experience. I'm always skeptical when I see a restaurant promoting how great hey are but this actually was. The service was second to none. I'd go to Williamsburg just to eat here again"

  • "This restaurant was outstanding....I had the pork chop which they brine for 24 hours and it was off the charts good! Totally recommend."

  • "Great food evertme we visit. The seafood specials are incredible if a bit expensive. The lamb shank melts in your mouth. Great wine list. One of our favorites!"

  • "After a long day of walking Williamsburg, we decided not to change from our jeans for dinner. But the staff made us comfortable and we very much enjoyed our rabbit starter and duck entre."

  • "Food was slow coming out and incomplete, but it was very good. Our server was excellent."

  • "Wife & I arrived early checked in (10mins) told young blonde girl at front desk that we would wait at bar. She said that she would check on table and come and get us. That didn't happen when back 20 mins later she told us that she forgot!??? Place was not full only two other people at bar."

  • "If...God forbid...I should ever find myself on Death Row, I would request the following as my "last meal": The Fat Canary's scallops followed by their macadamia nut pie with grilled pineapple. I'd wash it all down with a cosmo made by David the bartender and brought to me by server extraordinaire, Tink. This way, I'd be in heaven well before my appointed time!"

  • "The place is busy not quiet at all. When we went through the front door I knew I was not where I wanted to be for this occasion. It felt cheap and not high end. Our server appeared shortly after seating us, but for some reason had a hard time actually talking to us and would talk past us. Seemed like they were rushed and not really interested in what they were doing. This continued from the start of the meal until we were exiting out the front door. Despite the awkward interactions, the server took care of what we needed. The food itself was just OK. I expect a lot more than "OK" for the price. It just seems like it is aimed to cash in on the loads of tourists and doesn't really offer what I would consider any kind of remarkable qualities."

  • "Excellent all around restaurant that hits on all cylinders all the time. Only minor quirk for me is the revamped wine list: it is arranged awkwardly and a couple of my long time favorites disappeared."

  • "I was very impressed at how accommodating they were with respect to my wife's dairy allergy - and she loved loved loved her birthday dinner. Thanks for helping to make it special."

  • "Fat Canary is a great restaurant. Their menu does have a variety of food choices, but the variety is small. The customer service from the wait staff was excellent except for one lady who did not smile or speak upon approaching the table. The food from the appetizer to the dessert was excellent I loved the scallops with fried pork belly couscous and diced tomatoes. Very excellent dish. I also had carrot cake which was delicious."

  • "This was not our first visit to the Fat Canary and it certainly will not be our last!! We really enjoy dining there; nice atmosphere, great food, terrific and caring server and all around pleasant evening. This is a sample of how people feel about the Fat Canary--we were talking with the couple at the adjacent table who were enjoying their 2nd night of 3 in a row! It is the kind of place where you could go several nights in a row to partake of more of the menu selections. We have nothing but good comments about our experiences there and will be anxious to return [too bad it is not closer to home]."

  • "The food was great! A nice little gem hidden in Colonial Williamsburg. The service was top notch and the food was excellent. You can taste freshness - and that's what you get at Fat Canary. I always know I have had a good meal when I never have to go to the salt and pepper. Everything was seasoned and delicious."

  • "Excellent locale. Food was just right. Service was outstanding. It was a dark and rainy night and I have some mobility issues. The hostess went out of her way to show me a back way out that would be closer to my car and less exposed to the elements."

  • "I've been visiting Fat Canary every semester since 2010. This weekend I visited for the first time after I graduated. Still quality food, of course. I love the rabbit appetizer with biscuit, and the duck breast as an entrée. Pork chop and lamb are good choices too."

  • "I eat here every time I'm in Williamsburg and have yet to be disappointed. I've recommended Fat Canary to all my friends and co- workers. I travel a lot and have yet to have a better beef filet than yours. It just melts in your mouth. To anyone reading this review you must try the Fat Canary it's a true treat."

  • "Started at the bar with a great recommendation from bartender for a crisp dry white wine. Hostess was very accommodating to get us seated promptly. Our meal started with a wonderful cheese plate complemented by a fresh apple chutney. The bread was above the standard basket. I chose fried oysters for app and was not disappointed they were light and crisp. The hit of the night was the special which was rockfish with shrimp and beurre blanc sauce, the fish was well seasoned and perfectly cooked it was served over kale and risotto. To end the evening, my daughter raved about the profiteroles with espresso ice cream and I was pleasantly surprised by my cappuccino, very rich and intense flavor. A great memorable evening-Thank you!"

  • "Overall a memorable epicurean evening. Service was excellent (Thanks "Tink") and all needs met. Food was very good from starters through salads through entrees. Better than average bar selection (single malts and small batches) and nice personal touches for a special evening for my wife and myself. Because of the small dining room - tables were very close and bar open to seated diners - the overall noise level was somewhat distracting. However the food and service more than made up for this ... we will certainly return when again in Virginia's first historic capital."
