Fassia is a restaurant that feature authentic Moroccan cuisine from Fez (one of the best in the world,also the country's culinary and gastronomic centre) owner Drissia Rafael a native of Fez and a husband jean -Roger Rafael (executive chef) a native of Marseille worked under the supervision of Drissia mother who had a well know restaurants in Fez and he also worked with great chefs from france.
they had 3 successful establishments in New York city over the years.   • "A Tuesday night, 7:30, and we four were the only customers. This is a lovely Moroccan restaurant, beautifully designed, colourful, comfortable, inviting, and very reasonably priced. The husband and wife owners - he being the chef and she the hostess/server - work very hard, the food is delicious, and the place should be full of customers. Definitely a neighbourhood gem which would be a pity to lose. I hope the word spreads quickly and brings much business to a hard-working couple who know how to cook."

  • "Fantastic Moroccan food...in San Mateo? Quality ingredients, nicely appointed restaurant, very good service. Wine list isn't extensive but they have a few moroccan wines that I'd like to try at one point! Tender lamb and chicken tagine loaded with flavor. Home made bread with anise seed is delicious. Empty on a Thursday night but as the word gets out about this place, that could change."

  • "This is a great change of pace restaurant in San Mateo. The flavors and aromas are wonderful. It's fairly small and only has one server plus the owner so some times it is a little slow getting seated but once seated, the service is good and they are very attentive. It's a keeper for us."

  • "This inviting Moroccan restaurant delivered more than we anticipated. Although it was midweek and we were the only diners there from 6-8 p.m. we had such an enjoyable dinner. The owner is so warm and friendly,and we felt so welcome. The food is delicious,and generous portions. We enjoyed the lamb tagines,(two different preparations)very much. The food is beautiful,and expertly prepared in all details. The Moroccan red wine we tried was a good match for the flavors of our food. We look forward to trying many more options on the menu,and bringing our friends with us!"

  • "I love this place. Every time I've visited this restaurant the food and service have been excellent. On this last visit we started with the traditional soup- delish and then I had the Salmon Tangine which was out of this world. The yummy bread with anise seed was served warm and the server recommended the perfect wine. The trio of ice cream dessert included my favorite flavor, cinnamon. My only question is why haven't more people found this place. The parking is much better than the downtown 3rd & 4th st areas."

  • "I had never had Moroccan food before, but I'm a wannabe foodie so I was open to it. The food here was amazing. I had a lamb and prune tangine. The lamb was incredibly tender and tasty and the juxtoposing sweet flavors from the prunes and pears were exquisite. The served fresh out of the oven breads that went along perfectly. The portion of the main dish was also perfect. It was a little too much for me, but for my friends it was just the right amount. Delicious."

  • "I went to this restaurant on a Sunday evening and it was completely empty. I was tempted to leave but having already planned to meet some folks here decided to go in. I was pleasantly surprised that both the food and service was so good. Maybe its location in San Mateo doesn't drive business. We had the duck b'stilla and the chicken couscous. Of the two I preferred the duck but the chicken couscous was light and flavorful as well. Our server made appropriate wine recommendations. Overall a enjoyable experience."

  • "Fassia is a lovely little place that serves food far beyond what its modest appearance might suggest. Morroccan tagines with chicken, lamb and prunes, or lamb and artichokes feature meltingly tender meats seasoned with sweet spices such as cinnamon or sour + salty condiments such as preserved lemon. The bastiya (bastilla or besteya) of duck confit, almonds and spices filling a flaky filo crust is another example of the combinations of sweet and savory flavors that Fassia features. Their house-made bread rolls, delicately scented with anise and served fresh and warm, make we wish I could eat there every day. I've visited Fassia twice, and both times the service has been great - attentive and unhurried. Fassia deserves to be better known."

  • "we enjoyed our Morrocan dinner very much on a quiet Tuesday night. We were the only patrons at 6:45 pm so I felt badly for our server and cook. Appetizers were well done and tasty while the two main dishes we selected were good to very good. Interesting spices and flavors. Would return tho not right away."

  • "We were in town for a weekend near San Francisco Airport. We have a lot of experience and a taste of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Food. This was by far the best Moroccan Food we ever had. Proper level and mix of spices, cooked to perfection, and very well presented. The service was also excellent and answered our curiosity questions very well. We will be back :)"

  • "my husband is from fez so we tryed fassia. the food was very tasty and the mild spices were well balanced.everything was beautifully presented.the B'stilla was outstanding, we had it in other restaurants it was always dry and made with chicken,this one was fluffy moist & made with duck.i had the fish tagine exquisite.we started with trio of Moroccan salad &seafood briouat, superb.everything comes with home made hot rolls.we also had very good red wine from morocco recommended by the owner .they have fabulous desserts and fresh mint tea.the service is very good and pleasant.there prices are extremely reasonable for a restaurant that as such high quality cuisine,service &decor. we were very impressed. we will go back as often as possible."

  • "We started going to Fassia when it was a French Moroccan restaurant called Cafe Tradition. While we enjoyed the French menu items, we were always drawn to the Moroccan tagines. Now that Fassia is Moroccan only, the tagines are prominent and delicious. There were five in our group and we all chose a lamb dish (lamb with prunes, lamb with couscous). But we also each were interested in the B’Stilla Fassia, a wonderful phyllo dough pie stuffed with duck, scrambled eggs and moroccan spices. We ordered this dish as an appetizer to share so that we could still have our lamb dishes, which did not disappoint. Dinner at this restaurant is comfortable and relaxing with pleasant service."

We have a lot of experience with Moroccan cuisine and were expecting "the real deal", Portions were surprisingly small, flavors were disappointingly tepid, servers were quite pleasant but insufficient for the task at hand -- we waited a very long time for our food. We'll have to keep looking for a place that serves Moroccan food that we can love."

Our server, the owner/chef's wife is from Morocco and guided us through the menu and wine list - actually several very good wines from Morocco included. Help keep this place going strong as there are probably not a lot of Moroccans in San Mateo, but plenty of on-street parking and delicious food."

  • "Fassia is a makeover of a previous Mediterranean restaurant run by the same owners. The menu seemed very authentic. We tried the Briouat B'hout and the Trio of Moroccan Salad. The Briouat was excellent but the salad - really purees - were very tasty but the portions were very small. The bread they serve is wonderful - they should sell it. For entrees we had the Tagine B'hout (salmon that night), Tagine B Lkouk and the Kebabs. The Tagines were very flavorful. The kababs were OK. We will return to try the B'stilla. Service was attentive but a little slow - and the restaurant wasn't even full. Overall, we enjoyed Fassia and will return"

  • "fabulous Moroccan food especially if you want to try the real thing (cuisine from fez) the owner make you feel at home with her warm hospitality and very good service, . the food come out very well presented and very tasty because the chef owner is always in the kitchen. I love the décor and the music. they have good selection of moroccan wines. very inexpensive prices for the quality of this charming place we will definitely go back to try more of the menu dishes."

There were only 4 parties to be served , 2 with 2 people, 1 with 4 & 1 with 5 who had just come in. Had to leave without our coffee."

  • "We visited Fassia prior to attending a lecture at the San Mateo Event Center...very convenient to the venue. Quiet, lovely restaurant with delicious Moroccan food. Hostess/server was charming and solicitous, but there should have been another of her, so service a bit slow. Food delicious and intriguing. Many varieties of tagines, Moroccan salads and Moroccan "Pinot Grigio"...quite good. I'd definitely go back if I was in the neighborhood, and would travel there if I wanted a good meal with friends in a quiet, relaxing setting."

  • "The service was friendly and personal. Their wine selection well chosen. For appetizers, we had the clams which were delicious. For entrees, I had the scallop pasta while my friends ordered the chicken and lamb tagines. All were appropriately sized and well flavored. The food menu had more of a Moroccan than French influence but all in all definitely worth a repeat visit with friends with discerning palettes. =)"
