Diner Reviews
  • "Myh wife and I had dinner this week at Farmstead Table, our first visit to the restaurant. Very pleasant decor, warmly greeted at the door for our early (5:30) seating, and Beth was our server. I enjoyed a very good Ale from Martha's Vineyard and enjoyed the crispy clams, while my wife savored the fresh, hot popover. We ordered fish entrees, mine was the Halibut, Kathleen the rainbow trout. Both dishes were tasty, fresh and delicious. Beth provided excellent service, and we will return.!"

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in newton, and a fabulous excuse to stay local. Food is superb, service is always excellent, and I'm always seated on time."

  • "Numerous new local restaurants have been such a disappointment - have dined here on three occasions recently- ambience, cuisine and service all stellar! Our new local ( Chestnut Hill residents) go to!"

  • "The service was very good and the restaurant is very pleasant with a summer feel. The fried clam appetizer and soft shell crab appetizer were fabulous. The rib eye not so much. It appeared to be barely broiled and not grilled. Very disappointing. The half portion of the pasta entrée was ridiculously small. A mixed review."

  • "The food was terrific and service friendly and proficient. The rib eye was outstanding and anyone who is a fan of strawberry rhubarb should check pout their dessert menu - just like grandma used to make."

  • "Great spot. Limited menu, but done beautifully. I had the pork tenderloin and it was delicious, my date had the fish special. Portions are on the smaller side, so plenty of room left for dessert."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "The food was impeccable. The way that all the flavors subtly played off each other was simply great. I must say the food was probably one of the best that I have ever eaten. Plus it's a rotating menu based on what is in season."

  • "We ate early on a Saturday evening. By the time we were done, many tables were occupied. The menu is small but the choices we made to share: fish of the day (hake), gnocchi and an appetizer of scallops along with a glass of white wine were all excellent. The dessert menu was appealing even though we did not choose to have dessert that night. Cost with tip was around $80."

  • "Fantastic blend of ingredients for an unusual and fabulous dinner. Popovers were delish, but I wish they would have offered complimentary bread as well. Everything was prepared with thought and care."

  • "It was expensive for a small portion and accompaniments. THere was no more chocolate tart which was disappointing since we were eating pretty early."

  • "This is the 5th time we have eaten at Farmstead, so we felt comfortable bringing our good friends. We were all very disappointed with our waiter, whom we found to be rude. He literally threw the check (in its little basket) on the table. He was impolite during the entire meal, expecting all 4 of us to order the seafood special trio meal. None of us was interested in that, and he made us feel uncomfortable by our dinner choices which did not individually add up to the $38 of the trio special. My friend ordered an espresso and was told that since the restaurant used to make espresso, badly, they decided NOT to offer espresso at all. The food was quite good, but the experience a big disappointment."

  • "Great fresh food in just the right portion sizes, the ambience is crisp but soothing, the staff are always close by, but not over serving and have a quietness that adds to the ambience."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Food was good, but nothing stood out as special. Service was generally attentive, but everything was slow. Twenty minutes for a cocktail, an additional 30 minutes for salads, etc. , entire meal took 3.5 hours. Very limited wine selection."

  • "This is our first tme back in several months, and the food remains delicious with excellent waitstaff who are friendly and informative but never in your face. Each dish we tie, the hen, the steak, the clams and the grid oysters as well as the sticky pudding were all excellent. The problem is that the Kitchn must be tny, so the menu is also quite limited...five entrees, etc. wish they could garner a slightly larger more comfortable space but we will go back as is. "

  • "Lovely food and atmosphere, not pretentious like so many "farm to table" restaurants! Attentive, friendly service. Really wanted us to be pleased and comfortable, but not overly chummy."

  • "There are always so many entries into the locovore food racket! But Farmstead Table shines with unique offerings, freshly prepared goodies, and excellent service. Don't miss it. "

  • "Server recommended a drink. I didn't care for it. She asked if I liked it & I said "so so" & she walked away. Seafood tasting was good. I asked about other choices & waitress recommended pork chop. Smoked pork chop was so smokey that it was not edible. I told the waitress when she finally came by & she said " yes it's quite smoky". I might return for appetizers but not dinner. "

  • "Excellent food had the hen, and the s'more for desert, my guest had salmon which was amazing as well, my husband got pork he cleaned his plate. Food did take a while to arrive but they have great bread to hold you over."

  • "Loved the food, a lot. It was funny reading the other reviews since they pretty much stated that it was expensive, which my husband and I didn't think it was. It was a great dinning experience, the food was fresh, delicious, and a very different ambiance. Totally worth the prices they were asking for. Will go again soon!"

  • "I took 4 colleagues for a meal here and was delighted. Simple, elegant menu, great service, intimate setting. Had some of the most delicious tortelloni I've ever eaten. A keeper. I'll be back on a future visit. One other thing--the artwork is gorgeous. The place is beautifully appointed and this care/attention extends to food as well as decor. Thumbs up. "

  • "pricey and the service is spotty-sat at the bar on 2 occasions- the first time the fellow behind the bar was great-the second time the gal was no so hot."

  • "I'd been to FT about half a dozen time previously, mostly for lunch. Although the food has always been wonderful, most of the dining experiences were marred by sub-par service. But during this latest visit, for dinner with my husband, the professional, knowledgeable and friendly service provided by John matched the quality of the food, which was the best I've had here. My husband had the 3-course seafood menu, which started with a luxurious lobster asparagus soup. For my entree, I enjoyed morel tortelloni. The celebration of spring veggies included beautiful peas, which studded every dish. Everything was beautifully presented. A nice wine selection complemented the food, and the sticky toffee pudding we shared for dessert was divine."

  • "Farmstead Table is a great place for a special lunch or dinner and/or just a great neighborhood place to eat at on a regular basis. Creative menu with nice variety and great presentation! Both the food and the service were amazing!"
    Dined on 5/20/2014
  • "Service was warm and competent. Wines by the glass list was well edited. My friend and I shared the arancini and we each got an order of tortelloni for an entree - both dishes were very well exeecuted. As with most places that focus on local/organic/in-season, the menu is limited. Along the same line, it is a small, neighborhood place, and the seating is a bit cramped. "

  • "The waiter was out of his depth, ill trained, and disagreeable. Of four entree's, three were mediocre and one was terrible. One was miniscule. Wine was served late. We had to ask for the bread, which tasted good, but long wait for butter, then not enough butter when it came. Dessert was tasty, although they had run out of the item my daughter wanted. What we did receive was poorly presented: cream topping was served frozen solid, for example. It was a poor showing, from the kitchen to the dining room. Prices were high, there was nothing to redeem the experience, and no reason to think things would be better another time. We are not going back and have told friends to avoid."

  • "The food is always excellent. My wish is for a couple more items on the menu that are less complex, with the possibility of having less calories. Fortunately, I have been able to find one thing that meets my requirements the two times I've eaten at The Farmstead. My point is I'd like to have a little more choice."
    Dined on 5/14/2014
  • "There's no question that the food is prepared very well indeed. But at these high prices ($16 for an omelet with nary a slice of toast?), one expects more ambience than a kitschy farm table, scuffed cement floor, noisy atmosphere. Crates of old-fashioned glass milk bottles? Spare me. Where's the Hilltop cow? And $42 for the least expensive bottle of wine at the "farm"? Huh? All of that said, the food is really quite good and might be worth it at 75% of these prices. "
