  • "The food was remarkable - delicious and the presentation is like art form. We ordered 6 dishes and each dish was brought out by a different staff member, which included chefs in the kitchen. That is something unique. We will definitely come back for dinner and lunch."

  • "Loving interesting, authentic local food, we were drawn to The Farmer's Apprentice, the recently voted "best restaurant in Vancouver" distinction. Although tiny and a bit quaint in stature and decor, the food packed a punch! From the daily menu, we chose heirloom beans, sweet peas, burrata with pickled vegetables, albacore tuna, pork cheeks and more! We felt lucky to score a late night reservation the day we arrived to this beautiful city from another great foodie city, Minneapolis!"

  • "the food is farmer-simple yet perfected and excellently executed. flavors are more subtle than bold and plating and composure very uncomplex. even being familiar with the latest gourmet offerings of vancouver, you may find prices are pretentious for the location, size, and ambiance - you'll pay more for it being a new foodie location, then for how good it is, which can suck some of the enjoyment out of the experience. dietary restrictions appear to be frowned on."

  • "The food was light and fantastic. There was no unnecessary clutter on the plates and each looked like a work of art."

  • "We loved the restaurant. The food was excellent. The snap pea appetizer was delicious, as were the sweetbreads. Wonderful use of vegetables and light sauces. However, the best item on the menu had to be the agnolotti. Just perfectly done. The chocolate macaroon cookies at the end topped off a wonderful evening. As for our server, Claire, she was delightful."

  • "Lovely little restaurant, very knowledgeable staff, but we experienced a bit of attitude at the door thankfully we had a reservation. The dishes are very lovely with vibrant color and smart variance of texture. The flavors are a bit more experimental than flavorful at times however. Servings are small and meant to share, but we went as two couples and given the menu's small size we ordered 7 dishes and had to venture into that undiscovered territory a bit too far. Sometimes this sort of experimenting can lead to dynamite results. Bison carpaccio, brisket gnocchi, burrata cheese and pickled veggies. Others fell short. This place get's an A+ for effort and design, bravery in experimentation, B for flavor."

  • "I love this resto. However the Sunday supper family style was just "ok". We were five people and I felt like we didn't have enough food. Also there was a lot of time between the first and second dish. The girl that was serving us had no personality. I've been to this resto other times, ordered off the menu and it was great. I don't think I'd go back for the set menu but will go back again for dinner any other time."

  • "We booked our Saturday table a month in advance because there wasn't a table available on an earlier Saturday! The place is small but charming. The kitchen is in plain view so you can watch the chefs at work. We ordered 2 smaller dishes which were both delicious, the carrot risotto and poached egg + potato. The latter sounds weird but was SO good! I didn't like our 2 larger dishes as much, the sablefish (uninspiring) and a Thai-inspired salad with pork (average). Being Thai, maybe my expectations were too high... I've had many a Thai salad much cheaper and tastier so I was disappointed with that dish. Overall, definitely go. I'll go again, this time for lunch, but I won't be ordering any Asian menu items."

  • "Everything I tasted was an absolute treat for the taste buds. Seriously one of the most innovative and delicious meals I've had in a while. The portions are small, but the prices reflect that. We ordered 7 dishes for 3 people, and it was a perfect amount. Not too much or too little and we got to taste so many different amazing things."

  • "Great food, great service. This is a great little restaurant. Plates are quite small, however, so it is not the best value for money."

  • "Bland food, service wasn't good, over rated not sure what all the buss about this restaurant is but definitely not worth the time to go."

  • "This is not fine dining, but the kind of friendly neighborhood gem you'd like to go to with a good friend. Service was outstanding -- we had asked our server if there were any late night jazz places around and the entire crew brainstormed and made calls and came up with a list for us. The food is shareable small to medium-large plates -- we ordered a 3-4 dishes per head, including dessert. Each plate is a beautiful and intriguing balance of flavors, without going over the top on presentation. Just great flavors perfectly blended -- with unusual touches like gin jelly, and a tea bath. The desserts were simply outstanding -- light, healthy, simply delicious -- do leave room for them."

  • "Don't let the name Farmer's Apprentice lead you to think that there will be a lot of veggie options--there wasn't much veggie at all. The carrot risotto was yummy, and the halibut, but lots of other dishes missed the mark, a phenomenon my husband and I call "too much cinnamon in the cookie." Seems like the chefs are young and inspired, but haven't refined their own palates yet. The tastes of the fresh produce and fish were drowned out by all the other "noise" on our plates. Our server seemed really unenthused about the food as well."

  • "Terrible seating & dining environment. Below average food taste and quality; absolutely overprice! probably the worst dinning experience we ever had in the Lowermainland, B.C so far...."

  • "My girlfriend and I were excited to try Farmer's Apprentice. We ordered bread with garlic butter and one of the cheese and nut plates as appetizers. After that, the duck agnolotti arrived. I enjoyed this dish because it was packed with flavour (it tasted a lot like a Chinese 5 spice braised dish). Next came the special of the day, a beef gnocchi with a flavor profile very similar to the agnolotti (perhaps the exception was that there was some sour cabbage). The carrot risotto followed...except it did not seem to taste like carrots; cheese was overwhelming in the dish. Thus far, my girlfriend found all three main dishes were far too salty for her really enjoy. The last dish was the sablefish, which was very flaky and light; well-seasoned."

  • "Food is great but portions are ridiculous. I dine out quite a bit and love shared menu but I think Farmer's Apprentice takes it too far. Wonder how they'll do once hype is gone. Maybe my pallet is not sophisticated enough? I've tried it a couple times, because I thought I was missed something the first time. I've even taken a couple people there hoping for a memorable night and it never is. You only get two hours to dine and then you are out. For people that like to socialize, not the place."

  • "The restaurant offers a creative dining experience. Their menu is, indeed, one-of-a-kind. Foodies will find their palate satisfied here. The menu is tailored around seasonal fresh food from local farms. The menus change from time to time (or even week to week!) That shows the attentiveness and detail the restaurant pays to their food and creation. Staff is friendly and nice. Warm atmosphere. The space is small so not fit for huge groups (better call to book the entire place if you have more than 25+ people). They have a nice mix of beer/cocktail/mocktail. The portion is quite small but they are meant for sharing. The best strategy is to pre-eat before going so you may taste the food not to stuff the tummy. Foodies, what are you waiting for"

  • "I am NOT a foodie, but I've lived long enough to know what tastes good and what doesn't. I eat out a good bit in Vancouver. (We've lived here for five years). This is probably among the two or three best meals I've had in Vancouver. I also like the busy and unpretentious feel of the place. The focus here is on the food, not on trying to impress you with a fancy space. The only weak spot was the wine. For my taste, the brighter fruity tastes of most wines at good restaurants (including FA) is a real disappointment. If only the wines were as subtle as the food."

  • "I heard about Farmer's Apprentice one day on the radio (Nat and Drew 103.5) when one of their co-hosts Scooter was talking about it...I'm always looking for new places to try and wanted to take my boyfriend out for dinner so I booked a night at this restaurant. It was very tiny inside but had a friendliness about it,I couldn't believe how busy it was and how amazing the food was so delicious. It seems very well run and organized,my only complaint is that when I booked online I had mentioned that it was my boyfriend's bday and I noticed that someone else had their bday recognized and he didn't..I thought that FA would of done something special for him so that was a little disappointing. Oh well next time! Boyfriend liked it too!"

  • "We were disappointed. For all the accolates that Farmer's Apprentice has received, we didn't find any specialness in the taste of the food. The service was good and the food was fresh."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "The food is very good. The portions are very small. At 14-25$ per "tapa", that comes to $84- 150 for 3 people without wine and you may still be hungry."

  • "YUM! Had the best dinner at Farmers Apprentice...the food was fresh and devine. Well priced too! We will be back soon! "

  • "I went for dinner expecting a larger portion compared to lunch(had the sable fish bacon risotto). I went with a few gents from work- food was tasty but was not a very large portion for the price especially.... Very innovative and the service was good. Wine list was so so, wines by the glass were limited... I probably would not return. Perhaps my expectations surpassed the hype of Vancouver's best. The gnocchi had maybe 8 gnocchi, the salmon was perfect with a few greens, and the asparagus was tasty but very tiny!"

  • "Having been rated very highly in the restaurant awards, we were expecting an outstanding meal- We frequent most of the award winners. We went for the the Sunday supper series. The flavours were underwhelming, regardless of the simplistic style of food. The portions were not well thought out for family dining - some plates were divided evenly, others not at all. The lamb was tough, and lacked flavour. The vegetarian substitution for the lamb was cod... And dessert left one wanting. Cute decor, though! We will try it again, on a regular night (we're going to assume the Sunday supper series is not as good as the regular menu) "

  • "We were expecting an extraordinary experience based on recent accolades but we were underwhelmed. The food was good but the portions were incredibly small, like tapas-sized. We ordered a special, salmon, and also the tongue. The salmon was cut up into six pieces the size of a pat of butter. The tongue was very good and more filling. We felt a bit rushed towards the end, like they couldn't wait to turn the table over. Honestly I had a better dining experience (excellent fish, better service) at Joe Fortes two nights later (admittedly a completely different style of restaurant.)"

  • "The food was very good but unfortunately it was so noisy we had to strain our voices to have a conversation and we all left with headaches. Too hectic for my taste. Also... portions are supposed to be shared but they are so tiny it becomes an exercise in acrobatics."

  • "I love it that they play LPs! The food is outstanding, innovative and surprising tastes galore. On the menu it states that plates are meant to be shared. Here is where we ran into a problem. We ordered shared plates, only discover that the portions were tiny, really tiny - too small to really think of sharing. If our party had ordered individually that might have been ok. Also, how do you break up an art work of food display?"
