We had olives, which were wonderful; different that I have ever had. Then the bread with onion butter, which was delicious. Then the scallops and pork cheeks, both of which were outstanding. Strange that the duck confit was sold out at 5:45....The prices are a little high for the portion sizes, which are small. But if you crave great food, this is the place for you!

Happy and joyous food that comes out of the kitchen with the chefs delivering it. Sharing style plates, with thoughtful food. Uber fresh with interesting combinations. Every time I dine here I leave with a big smile on my face. Not so much of a hidden gem anymore, as the word is out. This is a restaurant that does something completely different, and without any pretension or attitude. Again, consistently amazing!

Definitely a different and interesting food experience - fresh ingredients in unique combinations (we asked for a copy of the daily menu sheet back so we could keep track of the components)! Lots of chefs in the open kitchen, and they seemed to enjoy serving the food themselves. As expected, the servings were a bit pricey for the small size - 4 of us split 7 main items plus 2 breads and the great olives. Recommend the perfectly done halibut. The sweetbreads were a highlight - great sauce - another good reason for the bread to wipe up every drop. Great background music. On the negative side, there were no moderately priced wines on the list. Also no non-alcoholic beer, soft drinks or juices for non-drinkers - just a fruity "cocktail".

We had dinner on a Friday night. This place gets quite busy as it is very popular. We liked the idea that all plates were meant for sharing. We had a nice zucchini and tomato salad with avocado dressing, some halibut that was small but perfectly done, and a rib eye steak that was overpriced and not cooked on a hot enough grill; the fat was not really crisped up. The bread, which is an extra cost, was very good but there was not enough olive oil provided with the bread. I would recommend this restaurant but I will not go there again for a year or two as there are so many new restaurants to try in Vancouver.

The chefs killed it with the food here. We had the heirloom tomato dish (good and perhaps too simple of a dish). We also ordered their potato dish which was amazing. The flavors were spot on. Then we ordered their foie gras. Amazing portion of foie for the price and the flavors were again spot on. Lastly we ordered their 45 day aged steak (I think it's 45 day). Wow! Probably the best steak I've had in Vancouver. It's pricey but worth it because the portion is enough for two medium size people. Although I could probably finish it myself but my wife would not be happy. The steak was cooked perfect rare, maybe even blue. I suspect it was sous vide though they didn't advertise it. All around great place to have a nice dinner.

Farm to table - got it. But... they seem to go so far to make sure that you recognize just how good a tomato it is, that they barely do anything to it. I buy the same exact produce (from the same farms) at Trout Lake Market, and I don't need to spend $180/cpl to eat 'em. I really wouldn't rush back for any of the 8 dishes our table of 4 tried. The sable fish and halibut and tuna dishes were very nice, as were the Seiglinde potatoes, but I've had better dishes in plenty of restaurants for less money. Excellent server, really like the room, bright and airy, spinning vinyl. Except that for our 7:45 reservation we were told at 9:15 that they'd be needing the table for 9:30 - not cool.

I rarely get to use the 5 star outstanding across the board but this restaurant deserves that rating. It is hard to explain Farmer's Apprentice because I do not have a comparison. It is laid back and super attentive at the same time - that goes for the food, the ambiance and the staff. It is a wonderful combination - and that ability to combine great experiences is translated in the food as well. Simple yet complex ingredient pairings result in dishes with flavour layers. An example is the simple olive that is smoked to perfection - you can buy them for takeaway for your award winning martini at your next party. I eat a plant based diet and had no trouble finding great selections on the menu.

Having read that this restaurants have made several lists as one of Vancouver's best, my partner and I were looking forward to dining here. However, the experience was disappointing. The food was inconsistent in quality - we started with heirloom bean salad that was excellent, this was followed by an interesting albacore tuna with kimchi, an over-salted red wheat berry salad, and a rabbit dish that was overcooked. What really made the experience poor were the hostess and waitress who were unwelcoming, uninformed about the menu, and seemed unhappy to be in what seems to be a successful restaurant. If our experience that night is typical, then the accolades are undeserved.

Poor service and slow initial service of drinks. Very condescending attitude by the waitress. She made us feel uncomfortable. Simple requests like a serving spoon for the dishes (as opposed to using our own forks to "dig in" communal dishes) was treated by attitude. At the end, she almost threw down the bill. She acted like a spoiled brat. The food, while good is overpriced and the servings small. We will not be back.

What a find this place is! Off the beaten downtown Vancouver path, but offers lots! We went on their guest chef Sundays where a set menu was provided but loved every part of it! Food was incredible. All market foods and whatever is in season from local farmers. Really quite delicious! Service was great and the restaurant is charming. Tiny, rustic place with lots of character. Definitely try it out but make sure you make resos ahead of time.

Loving interesting, authentic local food, we were drawn to The Farmer's Apprentice, the recently voted "best restaurant in Vancouver" distinction. Although tiny and a bit quaint in stature and decor, the food packed a punch! From the daily menu, we chose heirloom beans, sweet peas, burrata with pickled vegetables, albacore tuna, pork cheeks and more! We felt lucky to score a late night reservation the day we arrived to this beautiful city from another great foodie city, Minneapolis!

the food is farmer-simple yet perfected and excellently executed. flavors are more subtle than bold and plating and composure very uncomplex. even being familiar with the latest gourmet offerings of vancouver, you may find prices are pretentious for the location, size, and ambiance - you'll pay more for it being a new foodie location, then for how good it is, which can suck some of the enjoyment out of the experience. dietary restrictions appear to be frowned on.

We went to FA for our friends birthday with much anticipation. The space is quaint and bright, west coast casual which doesn't reflect it's price point as it would in other cities but have learned that's not how it works in Vancouver. The service was good, we had a confident, well spoken server who helped us pair our wine well. We ordered 8 dishes among 4 of us, plus 2 orders of the addictive smoked castelvetrano olives, huge plus. The bone marrow, sablefish, burrata, and summer salad, were ok to good, not stand outs. The octopus was not pleasant, too fishy, served cold. The pork cheek, was very good, tender, savoury, the sauce was killer. The best of the best was the sweetbreads. Would recommend a try but I will likely not return.

We loved the restaurant. The food was excellent. The snap pea appetizer was delicious, as were the sweetbreads. Wonderful use of vegetables and light sauces. However, the best item on the menu had to be the agnolotti. Just perfectly done. The chocolate macaroon cookies at the end topped off a wonderful evening. As for our server, Claire, she was delightful.

Lovely little restaurant, very knowledgeable staff, but we experienced a bit of attitude at the door thankfully we had a reservation. The dishes are very lovely with vibrant color and smart variance of texture. The flavors are a bit more experimental than flavorful at times however. Servings are small and meant to share, but we went as two couples and given the menu's small size we ordered 7 dishes and had to venture into that undiscovered territory a bit too far. Sometimes this sort of experimenting can lead to dynamite results. Bison carpaccio, brisket gnocchi, burrata cheese and pickled veggies. Others fell short. This place get's an A+ for effort and design, bravery in experimentation, B for flavor.

I love this resto. However the Sunday supper family style was just "ok". We were five people and I felt like we didn't have enough food. Also there was a lot of time between the first and second dish. The girl that was serving us had no personality. I've been to this resto other times, ordered off the menu and it was great. I don't think I'd go back for the set menu but will go back again for dinner any other time.

We booked our Saturday table a month in advance because there wasn't a table available on an earlier Saturday! The place is small but charming. The kitchen is in plain view so you can watch the chefs at work. We ordered 2 smaller dishes which were both delicious, the carrot risotto and poached egg + potato. The latter sounds weird but was SO good! I didn't like our 2 larger dishes as much, the sablefish (uninspiring) and a Thai-inspired salad with pork (average). Being Thai, maybe my expectations were too high... I've had many a Thai salad much cheaper and tastier so I was disappointed with that dish. Overall, definitely go. I'll go again, this time for lunch, but I won't be ordering any Asian menu items.

This is not fine dining, but the kind of friendly neighborhood gem you'd like to go to with a good friend. Service was outstanding -- we had asked our server if there were any late night jazz places around and the entire crew brainstormed and made calls and came up with a list for us. The food is shareable small to medium-large plates -- we ordered a 3-4 dishes per head, including dessert. Each plate is a beautiful and intriguing balance of flavors, without going over the top on presentation. Just great flavors perfectly blended -- with unusual touches like gin jelly, and a tea bath. The desserts were simply outstanding -- light, healthy, simply delicious -- do leave room for them.

Don't let the name Farmer's Apprentice lead you to think that there will be a lot of veggie options--there wasn't much veggie at all. The carrot risotto was yummy, and the halibut, but lots of other dishes missed the mark, a phenomenon my husband and I call "too much cinnamon in the cookie." Seems like the chefs are young and inspired, but haven't refined their own palates yet. The tastes of the fresh produce and fish were drowned out by all the other "noise" on our plates. Our server seemed really unenthused about the food as well.

My girlfriend and I were excited to try Farmer's Apprentice. We ordered bread with garlic butter and one of the cheese and nut plates as appetizers. After that, the duck agnolotti arrived. I enjoyed this dish because it was packed with flavour (it tasted a lot like a Chinese 5 spice braised dish). Next came the special of the day, a beef gnocchi with a flavor profile very similar to the agnolotti (perhaps the exception was that there was some sour cabbage). The carrot risotto followed...except it did not seem to taste like carrots; cheese was overwhelming in the dish. Thus far, my girlfriend found all three main dishes were far too salty for her really enjoy. The last dish was the sablefish, which was very flaky and light; well-seasoned.

Food is great but portions are ridiculous. I dine out quite a bit and love shared menu but I think Farmer's Apprentice takes it too far. Wonder how they'll do once hype is gone. Maybe my pallet is not sophisticated enough? I've tried it a couple times, because I thought I was missed something the first time. I've even taken a couple people there hoping for a memorable night and it never is. You only get two hours to dine and then you are out. For people that like to socialize, not the place.

The restaurant offers a creative dining experience. Their menu is, indeed, one-of-a-kind. Foodies will find their palate satisfied here. The menu is tailored around seasonal fresh food from local farms. The menus change from time to time (or even week to week!) That shows the attentiveness and detail the restaurant pays to their food and creation. Staff is friendly and nice. Warm atmosphere. The space is small so not fit for huge groups (better call to book the entire place if you have more than 25+ people). They have a nice mix of beer/cocktail/mocktail. The portion is quite small but they are meant for sharing. The best strategy is to pre-eat before going so you may taste the food not to stuff the tummy. Foodies, what are you waiting for

I am NOT a foodie, but I've lived long enough to know what tastes good and what doesn't. I eat out a good bit in Vancouver. (We've lived here for five years). This is probably among the two or three best meals I've had in Vancouver. I also like the busy and unpretentious feel of the place. The focus here is on the food, not on trying to impress you with a fancy space. The only weak spot was the wine. For my taste, the brighter fruity tastes of most wines at good restaurants (including FA) is a real disappointment. If only the wines were as subtle as the food.

I heard about Farmer's Apprentice one day on the radio (Nat and Drew 103.5) when one of their co-hosts Scooter was talking about it...I'm always looking for new places to try and wanted to take my boyfriend out for dinner so I booked a night at this restaurant. It was very tiny inside but had a friendliness about it,I couldn't believe how busy it was and how amazing the food was so delicious. It seems very well run and organized,my only complaint is that when I booked online I had mentioned that it was my boyfriend's bday and I noticed that someone else had their bday recognized and he didn't..I thought that FA would of done something special for him so that was a little disappointing. Oh well next time! Boyfriend liked it too!
