Diner Reviews
  • "and a great cause as well to boot! very classy establishment."

  • "Racking Up Frequent Foodie Miles at FareStart: A Fav Place to Dine! What's not to love about FareStart? It is such an important part of both the Seattle community at large and culinary. Most recently, we attended an incomparable dinner prepared by Chef Brian Scheehser of Trellis. Fabulous flavors, great value and the volunteer staff was incredible. Best of all was hearing the upbeat story of the woman graduating, being there to offer her our moral support for completing 16 intensive, life changing weeks - and cheering her on for already having been offered a job. You can't help but leave with a smile on your face."

  • "Our group had a wonderful evening and left with not only satisfied stomachs, but rejuvenated by the humanity of the entire experience. Farestart is truly a win-all experience: job training for folks who need it, excellent food for a good cause for diners, and a place to connect with other like-minded people. The volunteer working at our table, Timothy (cannot remember last name) was a phenomenal and articulate advocate for the program, and hearing his dedication and enthusiasm for the program was contagious. We will most definitely be back and have already told many friends that they must visit. Thank you!!"

  • "My husband and I live very close to FareStart and have always wanted to check it out. My husband's birthday was coming up so I made dinner reservations. We were both very impressed by the whole concept of FareStart, and with the high quality food and service. Great restaurant - great concept to help people in need. I highly recommend this place."

  • "Only great things to say about our lunch at FareStart. They made our friend's birthday extra special by including a Happy Birthday place card and candle on the dessert we ordered. Everyone in our party was vegetarian and really loved their sandwich--two of us ordered the Founder's Field Roast and the birthday boy had the veggie reuben. Our waitress was an absolute joy and very attentive. We can't wait to go back again!"

  • "We traveled across the Cascade Mountains to go to lunch here. The staff were all friendly and enthusiastic. The menu variety was GREAT! The food was excellent. The kitchen was behind windows so you could see the kitchen activity. It is a great place with a great spirit! Such a good cause! Keep up the excellent work!"

  • "FareStart continues to deliver excellence with a purpose. I feel good about why I'm there and I continue to be impressed with the quality of the food. However, what makes the place tick is the staff. They have friendly, professional, consistently terrrrr-ific service!"

  • "I have a recurring reservation on Thursday nights at FareStart. I am consistently impressed with the quality of the meals at their weekly dinners. I recommend this place to everyone I know in Seattle."

  • "The lamb was very disappointing - too fat and too much gristle - not the roasted lamb I expected. Salad so so, desert excellent."
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "I would have given 5 stars but they were so busy at lunch we were not given great service and sat in the back in a room used for private dining. The food was absolutely delicious and still worth the wait!!"

  • "We were very happy with our lunch at Farestart. I'd wanted to try the place for years and was excited that I finally had the chance to go there with my boyfriend for lunch. The restaurant is a few blocks from Westlake Center downtown, so centrally located. The space was open and airy, and totally packed for lunch on a Thursday! The downstairs staff and the servers were very friendly and professional. Our starter was a roasted beet and quinoa salad with candied walnuts, which was absolutely amazing! It even impressed the non-vegetarian in my party! I had the classic field roast sandwich, which had excellent flavors and delicious bread. My boyfriend had a burger, which he really enjoyed as well."

  • "Food was good, especially fish but the plates were humongous for the size of the table and for the food. The noise level was unbearable at times. Especially people next to us were so noisy that we couldn't talk across the table ourselves. However service is always excellent there and it is always good to attend the graduation."

  • "Finally visited Fare Start for lunch this week, and we were largely very impressed. Excellent service, above average food, and while it was a busy lunch rush, we had no trouble conversing. My lunch partner had the week's special Roasted Bosc Pear Salad, ordering it without bleu cheese. The server spoke with the kitchen and they made sure the salad arrived as ordered. I had the Beef Burger with a side salad, both of which were quite tasty. However, the burger looked like a pre-built patty, possibly frozen, and was medium-well done, not the medium-rare I requested. Also, the salad, while delicious, was a bit messy to eat: most of the components were julienned and a bit large. Overall, a good meal. I'd go back to support the mission!"

  • "I took my husband and some friends to Fairstart for his 52 birthday and it was such an enjoyable experience. The volunteer waitstaff that night were from a local law firm and we loved our waitress we told could always fall back on this if the legal thing didn't work out. She and the food were delightful. I had called aheaed of time to tell them it was my husband's birthday so they brought out his dessert with a lit candle on it and even helped us sign him Happy Birthday. Even if the food wasn't excellent - or in addition to it - it felt good to support a resturant that helps train folks living on the streets and many others to cook and get something solid on thei resume. We will make this place a regular!"

  • "The night was a community effort by the chefs, guest chefs, and servers . The service that this restaurant provides to homeless individuals along with the delicious food makes it a winning combination. In our group we had a visitor from out of state. He was so impressed with the good will hand-in-hand with the good food that he is going to tell restaurant owners he knows back home all about FareStart. The serving staff were delightful and informative; add that to the delicious meal, and it was a night to remember."

  • "Farestart is notable for its good works and its programs to help the disenfranchised find their way. The food is well prepared and the presentation was fabulous. I will be back again and I will recommend Farestart to all"

  • "For three old guys having lunch, Fare Start was a mixed but mostly positive experience. I tried adding a lot more to this sentence but was unable to submit it because it was "too long." Until this unhelpful length restriction is lifted, I guess I must keep details of my experience to myself."

  • "I have heard and driven by many times. This was a first time experience for all three in the party. I was pleased beyond expectations! Great program. Keep up the wonderful work. We shall return! Donald Skillestad"

  • "Don't just go for the food. Feel great about what's happening in our community. The place is filled with people who are there to support Farestarts mission and it's exciting to be part of that. I guarantee the short graduation ceremony will make you feel happier than any "feel good" movie."

  • "We try to remember Farestart every time we're in town. We think its a great cause, great service and great food. We were seated right next to some other folks that felt like they had to shout over everyone else in the room, other than that it was just what we expected and liked. Highly recommend the Blackened Salmon sandwich."

  • "I loved being seated with my party in the space between the back dining room and the front dining room of the second level as we were in a sound buffer area making it easier for my guests to have a comfortable conversation. Your staff made our party very special with the presentation of complimentary champagne! All the service staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. We all enjoyed our pistachio butter with the roasted beets and Mt. Townsend Cirrus Cheese. The silky fennel cream made the Fisherman's stew very elegant. Although the applesauce cake was very tasty, it was a little too rich for my tastes. My companions were happy! I found it to be a very sophisticated and affordable fine dining experience. We will be back!"

  • "Service was warm and attentive; all three of us were delighted by our entrees (tomato basil soup!); and the shared pumpkin spice cake dessert was both beautiful and sublime. The noise level was on the high side but not annoyingly so. We will definitely be returning."

  • "FareStart is a great business lunch venue, and I sometimes eat there as often as 2x per week. Food is reliable and fairly healthy, although a bit heavy on sandwiches. Their social mission (giving people a fresh start -- especially the homeless) does not get in the way of running a great restaurant."
    Dined on 2/18/2014
  • "Now that Farestart has its own beautiful restaurant, there's no excuse not to visit there as often as possible. Dine on 4-star chefs' menus, a different one each Thursday, for less than $30 for each gourmet, three-course meal. By far, the best deal in town!"

  • "The dinner didn't have a guest chef this evening but it was absolutely perfect. The appetizers were delicious and cooked perfectly, the dinner was creative and also delicious, and the dessert was one of the most beautiful desserts I've had in a bit. And for the money it's exceptional!"
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "The food was absolutely delicious! All three courses were delicious and for only $30--what a bargain! We loved every bite and we are already planning our next visit."

  • "I've heard from many people how great Farestart is,so I took my boyfriend for Valentines' Day. I also likes how they have helped the community and given so many people a chance to grow. I will keep the review short, but the place is beautiful yet relaxing and not stuffy. The food was delicious, but not filling and they take vegetarians into consideration which was fantastic for my boyfriend. The service was attentive and kind. I say give it a try and support a great place."

  • "Farestart is a nonprofit that provides culinary training for homeless people. In addition to having a good cause, they have a noteworthy wine menu for their Thursday evening dinners, and the food has always been very good. Furthermore, the prices are also very reasonable for Seattle and the service tends to be very enthusiastic, likely related to the fact that they are acting for a cause. Highly recommend."

  • "I have eaten at FareStart more than once and every time I go there the food and service is quite good. Never has there been a time where the food was not correct for our entire party. And the Cause behind the FareStart system is one I can definitely support. I would highly recommend making a reservation because the fill up fast. Hats Off to the whole staff at FareStart."
