Adding to that the consistent top quality innovative cuisine and service and there is a recipe for a very special evening. Of all the choices that we have in San Francisco, Farallon consistently comes up as the place that we want to return to and to bring guests."

  • "Had not dined here in quite some time. My food choices were the softshell crab appetizer and the branzino--both delicious! Bartender's "Whimsy" cocktail of chipotle vodka and grapefruit was also quite tasty. Very thorough wine list and impressive service--my expectations were met!"

  • "I'd been wanting to take my wife here for awhile now, and it lived up to the expectations. Some of the best food I've had in the city, and great service. The restaurant itself is located in a very historic building and occupies the top half of what used to be the swimming pool. Ask your server about it - it's great for those with history and architecture interests. The entrees and 3-course selection is priced on the high-end (which is appropriate) but it seems that the front lounge/bar area would be a great option for raw bar selections that may be more casual and affordable. Also - make sure you're a fan of seafood if you come here. There are a couple good looking steak options, but the main attraction is the seafood."

  • "Service was top notch and food was excellent....only blunder was that you need to replace whoever shucks your oysters. We Ordered a dozen oysters and each one had an inexcusable amount of "debris" in them. The fronts were shattered so more than half of them lost its juices and each slurp was a mouth full of shell. We advised our server and he professionally brought us four more oysters on the house! which unfortunately still had shells. Paying what we payed for those beauties and to have them dismantled and disrespected like that is a shame. The Mains and dessert were both amazing though."

  • "bar dining is really kind of an afterthought here architecturally, even though the oysters and happy hour menu are a good deal.The main dining room is eerily over the top and while interesting, if you're dining early, it feels like being in an aquarium, i.e. the decor does feel a little dated. The food is overpriced, but the flourishes can be exquisite. I dine here sporadically for business when I'm tasked with older clients."

The decor is fabulous as well, with sea themes and blown glass light fixtures in the shape of marine life. The tasting menu with wine pairing is a great choice if it is available."

  • "This restaurant has one of the most unique and entertaining designs in SF. It is an underwater world of jelly fish hanging from the ceiling and shell shape motifs as well as fine mosaics. Service is excellent,but never overbearing. Our anniversary was noted just enough with A piped chocolate Happy Anniversary on the desert plates. Pacing was perfect. My lobster was perfectly cooked and well dissected for easy eating. Our ravioli pasta was nicely split. Portions were right sized. I had forgotten what fun this place was."

  • "We dine at Farallon often, and have always rated it perfect. This visit fell short, and surprisingly on the food end. Service and wine were perfect, but the food just did not WOW us, as always before. Everything was good, with a few very-goods, but nothing excellent, across the whole menu. I think that it was just an off-night for the kitchen. We will certainly be back, because so many perfect scores cannot be dismissed, due to one weaker night."

  • "We have visited this restaurant many times over the past few years. This time I would say it was not as good as normal and the service was a bit over bearing. We had 3 wait staff at our table and they were replacing wine glasses on our very crowded table even though it was the second bottle of the same wine! I am in the wine business and this was way excessive."

  • "This is only my second time at Farallon and it was a great experience. We began with a large appetizer plate of a variety of sea foods which was amazing to look at and eat! I had a soft shell crab as my starter and it was delicious. My husband had the bisque which he said was equally as good. We had a group of 6 and everyone enjoyed their starters as well as their entrees. I know a lot of people don't eat bread anymore but the bread here was really wonderful. I had the filet of sole and my husband had a steak which was served in medallions. One of the other people had the raviolis to start and said that they were delicious too. We finished with coffees and cappuccinos. We were never rushed and the service was fantastic."

Our server did remove the charge from the bill, but this was the first time in perhaps half a dozen visits when I was disappointed. This is a first-rate restaurant and will remain one of my San Fran faves."

  • "It's not easy to combine fun and fancy, but Farallon manages to do it, from the décor to the food to the service. Our hosts, our servers -- all were consummate professionals. Our sommelier was a great example of Farallon's level of service: He began by describing the characteristics of a few of his favorite wines, but when it became clear that I barely know the difference between "dry" and "sweet", he not only showed not a hint of condescension as I might have expected, he adapted and remained extremely helpful. So, a situation that might have been awkward in a typical fancy restaurant, was fun instead. He even helped my friend get in touch with the maker of the beautiful wine glasses. And of course, the food was amazing :)"

  • "Over the years, I've read great things about Farallon and finally had the opportunity to try it. Sad to say, it was a disappointment. My expectation was to get some outstanding seafood - as I said not necessarily cutting edge, but well executed seafood dishes - which didn't happen. What disappointed me was the fact that the dishes could have been amazing... but weren't because the seasoning was completely off. I had the Citrus cured Halibut - great concept for a dish, great quality of fish but it was unbalanced - too salty and lacking the requisite acidity. Same held true for the Ono - cooked perfectly but too salty and not enough acid to balance the dish."

  • "Went for an early dinner on a Monday, probably not the best time for a restaurant to shine, but Farallon did. Service was very attentive. Waiter volunteered to split the seafood bisque it for two when we waivered on it. Crispy calamari (tiniest squid ever, but more than enough), asparagus salad, and the bisque were excellent. Give serious consideration to just ordering from Small Plates. Scallops and sole were very good, although the fish portion of each dish was small (2 ordinary sized scallops, e.g.). The Prix Fixe menu was a surprise for a seafood restaurant with 3 of the 4 non-dessert dishes meat based. Ambiance is stunning, and even with the room packed by 8 PM, conversation was easy. Definitely will return; no excuse needed."
