Diner Reviews
  • "We had a delicious dinner with great wine in the fun, under the sea atmosphere."

  • "First time to Farallon. Was visting SF from Chicago. First of all, the service is impecable. There seems to a hundred staff people roaming around to wait on you. One man just dishes out bread. There are 3-4 men working the cold bar. Our water glasses never got more than 1/3 empty without being refilled. Like any good restuarant, food is expensive. We spent $275 with tip for 4 people, no alcholol and this was 3 appetizers, 4 main courses and 2 desserts. The food was very good to outstanding. Obviously the specialty is fish. Everything was outstanding and delicious"

  • "Restaurant more like a train station-very noisy-service always in a rush - no time for individuel requests-food ok-ambience very nice."

  • "We both had the 5 course Chef's special. The food was okay but not as unique, interesting or tasty as I had hoped for, given the price. Same old dishes with nothing that surprised me. Cost for a 2.5 hour dinner, with drinks, for two, was over $300 with tip. I don't mind spending $$$$ on good food but I left feeling like it wasn't anything special and not worth the price."

  • "This used to be a great restaurant but it has succumbed to being a tourist trap...over-rated!"

  • "I've been to Farallon twice. The reason I went a second time was because the first time was excellent. I went back on a Friday night and they were understaffed. We ordered our courses and they forgot to deliver the first course to us, we had to remind them that we had ordered the Arugula. For this type of restaurant, the service was fairly sloppy and the restaurant is a bit packed for the amount of staff. The prior time I came, I believe it was a Sunday night, it was excellent because we were one of the 5 parties in the restaurant. The food overall is great, but you're not just paying for the food when you visit a nice restaurant."

  • "Can't say enough about Farallon! Spouse and I had the 5 course tasting with wine pairing. OMG! this place rocks, exceeds all expectations and hopes! The food and service were stellar. Our waiter/host Joseph, was considerate and genuine. He explained the individual courses and wines, and answered questions with ease and pleasure... the guy has style! This was an exceptional evening for us; and, staying at The Kensington Park Hotel in the same building made for a romantic, stress-free night! You have to try this!"

  • "The good was exceptional. We started with the seafood bisque, then lobster , short ribs and ended with chocolate bites. Coffee expresso was also good."

  • "Farallon is located in busy downtown SF. Parking difficult. Valet recommended. Food was ok, but did not meet expectations. Offers some different twists on seafood. Dessert list not too impressive."

  • "The octopus and ono were fantastik. Prompt service was important because we had a show to attend and made it in plenty of time."

  • "As usual, we tremendously enjoyed our evening at Farallon. From the time you arrive until you leave, the experience is outstanding. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food is excellent. We have never had anything less than a wonderful evening and dinner at Farallon."

  • "We took a group of 11, customers and peers, to Farallon and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The wine list was expansive and the meals were prepared with such touch, even our 'in-house' food critic was thrilled. Thank you for making it a great dinner!"

  • "The interior makes you feel like you are in the living seas. Definitely a "cool" place to dine. Menu had lots of wonderful seafood options that are not found at any typical upscale seafood restaurant. The server we had was outstanding. He knew the menu and when we asked for changes in portion sizes to turn an appetizer into a main portion, he was happy to accommodate. He also was not afraid to ask the chef to change a side of "sweetbread" into an appetizer portion. The flexibility of a busy chef is what makes an expensive restaurant into a restaurant that price is very secondary to appreciation of the meal. Even though it was quite crowded, we never felt like we were in a crowded space."

  • "We ate at Farallon a number of years ago and weren't impressed. Honestly do not remember why but it kept us from going back on later trips to San Francisco. Had a conference at the Westin St. Francis this week and needed someplace close to take a small group of clients (pretty much across the street) and went back. The food was good, the service was good and the ambiance was good. They even cooked my steelhead trout the way I like it (most places like to overcook) and it was great. We will likely go back on the next trip."

  • "While visiting San Fran my husband and myself wanted to taste some local fish...we enjoyed the ambiance the waiter was wonderful and the support staff were friendly and efficient. the caviar was incredible and the wine was excellently paired with our menu choices. The ono was a little dissapointing for my husband but the "tuna like " fish I had was very good if a little cool when served. Overall we would go again and certainly reccomend this restaurant to our friends Thank you for a great night out."

  • "Nathan, our server, was very knowledgeable - both about the menu and the story of the restaurant. He was very attentive to my husband's wine allergy; when he couldn't decide on a cocktail, Nathan had the bartender "create" two special cocktails for us, each with a different infused herb. We had special on-the-house appetizer treats that were luscious. For our first course my husband had the wild arugula and endive salad, and I had the bean salad - both were excellent. The second course soft-shell crab and scallops were superb. My husband had the lobster - large and flavorful. I had the branzino, which was fantastic. The meal was pricey, but worth every cent. We will definitely return. This was one of the best meals we've ever had."

  • "The seafood dishes are creative, beautiful, interesting and perfectly cooked - every time. The desert menu is amazing! We asked to meet Terri Wu, the pastry chef, to see what kind of person could create such audaciously surprising combinations that were so fantastic on the tongue. She turned out to be quiet and shy - the opposite of her desserts."

  • "My brother and his teenage kids were visiting from SoCal. The teens were excited and nervous about the fancy restaurant - the staff recognized this and made the entire night a wonderful experience, explaining the various terms on the menu, why we were served an amuse-bouche, making sure everything was to their personal liking, etc. The teens sincerely appreciated everything from the food flavors, textures, and plating to the sea urchin and squid room lights - everything! They were still talking about the meal/experience over breakfast brunch. Thank you to Open Table for finding us the reservation and to Farallon for giving them an unforgettable dining experience."

  • "It's been a few years since visiting Farallon- mostly because we live/work/dine in Walnut Creek. We had tickets to a show and decided to revisit one of our favorite restaurants- and we were not disappointed! Several online reviews had mentioned issues with the service but this was not the case for us. In fact, the staff was so attentive, even in a packed house on a Saturday evening, that I have to say it is the best service I have ever received. Our waiter was friendly, energetic and helpful in describing and suggesting the courses. The wine steward helped select the perfect compliment to our meal. The food was AMAZING! Flavor combinations that were exotic, delicious and incredibly unique. Add the décor and we had a perfect evening."

  • "Full disclosure - I'm a vegetarian, with legitimate food allergies (roll eyes here). What I can say about the seafood portion of our meal is from my husband. He loved his meal, along with a comprehensive wine list. This review is really for those who do not eat seafood, but find themselves at this gorgeous restaurant. The chef created an amazing plate. It was beautifully composed, delicious, and showed care in letting the ingredients shine. Oft times restaurants lazily serve up steamed vegetables, or over-cooked sauteed zucchini slivers. Great experience here for every member of our party. Possibly the best vegetarian meal I've ever had."

  • "This restaurant has a great selection of seafood. I had oysters as an appetizer, they were some of the freshest and best-tasting I've ever eaten! The selections were expertly prepared and presented. The wine list is extensive with something for most everyone's taste. But this restaurant is not for non-seafood eaters. There was one meat dish without seafood, NY steak, and I get the don't go to a seafood restaurant if you don't eat seafood cliché'. But, this type of restaurant should do a good job on their non-fish entrees (actually 2, but the other was goat cheese pasta). The steak was dry, had no real finish or taste and was a disappointment . My only other complaint was very slow service. Took 2 1/4 hours to get through dinner."

  • "The food that we selected was prepared extremely well, the server indicated they could not substitute blue cheese for goat cheese in our salad. I don't like the sides that came with my entree. So I ended up with a small salad and one tiny piece of very good beef short rib. Didn't even touch the snap peas, etc. Our "waiter" would not remove our plates when finished. Crazy. He actually said he would call his assistant to remove our dishes. Really. More important that he send the assistant than get our dishes off the table. First time for everything. Cool place, not deserving of the snobby attitude. Apparently one of those places where the Chef feels it's more important that you enjoy their pairings than go by your own taste."

  • "The greeting, wait staff, and clean up folks were all cordial and helpful. The food was excellent and well presented. My only complaint was the wine prices. the least expensive was $60 and the average seemed to be around $100. Ouch! Entrees were not overpriced, though. Would go back and drink beer."

  • "I have nothing bad to say about our dinner experience. We had 7 o'clock reservations and were seated promptly at 7. Our server was knowledgeable regarding the dinner selections and allowed us to enjoy the dinner experience at our leisure, not too pushy but still attentive to our needs. The food was one of the best dinners we have had at Farralon. Seafood was prepared perfectly and was delicious. Dessert was also a great way to end the dinner. It is a very busy restaurant but our table was such that we didn't even notice. All in all, it was an outstanding dinner and experience."

  • "We are girls night out, so we don't care about money for that night, as long as the food is good. But it was a total hit and miss that night. The seafood platter is a total joke, it come with The half lobstering so small it only have like one bit of meet. 4 small oyster, but the oyster is good. 4 small shrimp, and a very small half crab, but it's $70. It totally over price. We also order the soft shell crab and of course it come in mini size. Then move on the main course we order the fish which very good, scollop also very good. But the New York steak is like chewing leather, but it cook middle. So dinner comes in total more then $400s well we did order wine. But for $100 per person I expect more then that."

  • "If you've ever been to Barcelona and seen the works of Gaudy, then you have a feel for the décor of this unique restaurant. It is vibrant and alive. Adding to that the consistent top quality innovative cuisine and service and there is a recipe for a very special evening. Of all the choices that we have in San Francisco, Farallon consistently comes up as the place that we want to return to and to bring guests."

  • "Had not dined here in quite some time. My food choices were the softshell crab appetizer and the branzino--both delicious! Bartender's "Whimsy" cocktail of chipotle vodka and grapefruit was also quite tasty. Very thorough wine list and impressive service--my expectations were met!"

  • "Fell terribly short! Server not friendly, nor helpful for our guest with food allergy/restriction/No Milk products. He did not offer to have chef accommodate & make something up with the protein of choice. This was embarrassing for me & my guests. Then when the salad came, it had Cheese on TOP! Then when a fly dropped into his glass of wine, he simply took the glass, without offering to replace it with something else! I had to ask 10 min later. Told Mgr b/4 dessert about our experience he said I would hear from him real soon.No call/email. Liked food but can't recommend entertaining guest. Server ruined dining experience, marred the ambience, & took away from us enjoying fine food. All noticed his attitude, rudeness & slight toward us!"

  • "I'd been wanting to take my wife here for awhile now, and it lived up to the expectations. Some of the best food I've had in the city, and great service. The restaurant itself is located in a very historic building and occupies the top half of what used to be the swimming pool. Ask your server about it - it's great for those with history and architecture interests. The entrees and 3-course selection is priced on the high-end (which is appropriate) but it seems that the front lounge/bar area would be a great option for raw bar selections that may be more casual and affordable. Also - make sure you're a fan of seafood if you come here. There are a couple good looking steak options, but the main attraction is the seafood."

  • "Service was top notch and food was excellent....only blunder was that you need to replace whoever shucks your oysters. We Ordered a dozen oysters and each one had an inexcusable amount of "debris" in them. The fronts were shattered so more than half of them lost its juices and each slurp was a mouth full of shell. We advised our server and he professionally brought us four more oysters on the house! which unfortunately still had shells. Paying what we payed for those beauties and to have them dismantled and disrespected like that is a shame. The Mains and dessert were both amazing though."
