Diner Reviews
  • "Great food with great service! Will definitely return!"

  • "Great food, good service but very loud. I spent most of the night with my hand cupped over my ear so I could hear the person across the table of four."

  • "We continue to frequent this restaurant before A.C.T. and it always surprises us! The fish entrees are amazing in their tastes and textures. The menu constantly changes which makes dining here such an unexpected surprise! It's a bit pricey but worth every penny! The wait-staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable which further adds to the dining experience. Enjoy!"

  • "Not many healthier options. Chef is out of date. Trout was returned as unedible., but to their credit they took it back no questions asked and made my wife another dish. Pricey for what it was. For the tourist and expense account people only."

  • "Great ambiance. Amazining food and wine list. Pricey but the quality was exceptional."

  • "Farallon was recommended by a friend who lives in the city. The atmosphere is great. The chef allowed me to order a dinner off of the set menu for a main course by itself. This was a nice exception that was appreciated. The only complaint we had was that it felt like our waiter sort of forgot about us from time to time."

  • "This was our second visit to Farallon. The first time was more than 5 years ago, it was as good as I remembered. Everything we had was delicious, and prepared perfectly. Our waiter was disappointing, he seemed to be bothered by questions about the menu and had a very snobish attitude."

  • "We had the tasting menus, and chose to do our own pairings. A wonderful list allowed Noah, our Sommelier, and ourselves to discus and choose fine wines. The stemware was exceptionally nice. Even the single malt (75 on the list) was served in those great small designs just for them."

  • "Went for the first time on Monday. Got the reservation just a few hours prior using OT. The dinner and service were both great. It is a fairly expensive spot but the quality of the food and service were reflective of the price. The oysters kicked off the meal and the carrot cake ended it with a delicious bang. We had the sole and the sea bass. Both dishes were layered and complex. The broth that the sole was sitting in tasted like the ocean...fantastic. The sea bass was flavorful and had a nice grilled crust. If you like seafood this place is a must visit in SF."

  • "The food was amazing. Presentation was great. Wait staff was perfect... and you mix a perfect lemon drop!!"

  • "Farallon describes its menu as coastal cuisine, meaning mostly freshly caught fish and other fresh seafood. Our entrees were the Maryland striped bass and the Artic Char. Both were excellent and portions were quite sufficient. The shellfish bisque was excellent, as well. Other menu choices included Sashimi, Dungeness Crab, calamari, and trout. There were also caviar and oyster options. Our server, Nate, was friendly, efficient, accommodating, resourceful, made us feel special and had excellent recommendations. He and the sommelier, Adam, devised a nice wine pairing for my meal including 4 different half glasses The ambiance is romantic and gives an impression of dining underwater. The restaurant was full and thus somewhat noisy."

  • "The decor is wildly over the top - from chandeliers to pillars - all undersea themed in warm golds. I felt like I'd died and gone to Little Mermaid heaven. Also, each table has an unobtrusive spotlight lighting the center of the table, so one can actually read the menu. Where can you get caviar and also lobster, at human-scale prices? Best seafood bisque I've ever had. Perfect spot for going on to a show, because it's two blocks above union Square."

  • "Very nice evening with friends. The wait staff is attentive and not bothersome. We were catching up with friends and the wait staff could not have been nicer. Very patient with us. Thank you Farallon for another fantastic evening out to dinner in the city!"

  • "We went to Farallon for the first time to celebrate my wife's birthday. First thing to strike you is the fantastic décor: giant jellyfish chandeliers, fish mosaics on the floor, portholes with painted divers peering in--all inside a 1920's vaulted pool. Food was excellent. We shared great oysters from around the country, each distinctly delectable. Then entrées: lobster salad and risotto, both scrumptious. For the main course, my wife had exquisite tuna, lightly grilled and unbelievably tender, I scallops and clams over spatzle in broth. Service was mostly great. The sommelier steered us to a great Nikolaihof Riesling from Austria, unknown to me. Waiter was a good guide. The front staff could be warmer; genial bus boy made up for them."

  • "A great find for seafood lovers. The ambience is kind of Beauty and the Beast under the sea funky, but more elegant and tasteful than that might imply. The food is outstanding and turned this non-seafood-loving guy into a fan."

  • "Farallon, you have gone downhill. You used to be my go to restaurant for clients, family birthdays, and to impress a date. Your staff has gotten less friendly, less attentive, and frankly your food and has become boring. Same old drinks, many of which have the same sugary flavor with a sour bite, every time. The wait support staff (bus, bread service, etc.) were excellent and I wish I could give them a separate review. The hostess was horrible and our waiter was pretty unfriendly. My review is based on who you will primarily interact with. If you haven't been, it is worth seeing- but the food, service, and quality are no longer worth the price. Tip for those that go- build your own shellfish platter and leave the prawns out of it."

  • "We spent my wife's 65th birthday here and the restaurant was excellent, the only hiccup was that 3 out of the 4main fish dishes we ordered were cold but everything was great. I would highly recommend the carrot cake.."

  • "Our evening started out great with oysters on the half shell, a beautiful bottle of wine and a great salad. We told our waiter how much time we had because we really wanted to end our evening with a dessert. Unfortunately, my daughter's entree had a hair in it. Our waiter apologized for the mishap, but because it took so long to get a new entree for my daughter, we missed out on the dessert. The experience really took the wind out of our sail! I was very disappointed that Farallon felt the only way to compensate us for the mishap, was to send us a couple of "tiny" pieces of chocolate to go. Although I didn't ask for any compensation, I felt the least they could have done was comped us a free dessert for our next visit."

  • "Waiter was great. Halibut and carrot cake with wine pairings superb"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a very nice dinner at Farallon. I had halibut, and she had sole. Both dishes were excellent. The decor of the restaurant is quite whimsical and appropriate, with glass jelly fish hanging from the ceiling. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable, particularly about the wine selections. He was one of the best waiters that we have had in quite some time. Farallon is an excellent restaurant."

  • "If you enjoy paying a lot of money for a seriously small amount of mediocre sea food, this is the place for you! The service though is excellent, but then again, the management obviously knows that it takes great service to sell over priced tasteless food to people...."

  • "My husband is very fond of fresh seafood. Obviously, you have many choices in SF so we asked a foodie friend who lives in the city for recommendations. After doing our homework, we selected Farallon and we were very pleased. The raw oyster selection was outstanding and tasty. Lobster presentation was well received. I had tuna in a miso broth with baby vegetables. Again, well presented and understated so the fish was the star. We had very fine service and appreciated the wine choices. Wine list is not outstanding but has creative options. The decor is a bonus to help you appreciate what you are eating."

  • "We went to Farallon on recommendation. The oysters were horrible. My fish was OK- but nothing to write home about- The bread and flavored butter was the best thing. Small portions- our scallop appetizer for $20 was one scallop. The dessert was ice cream and a dallop of hot fudge."

  • "Decor is fun but tasteful, with a nod to underwater life. 1st and 2nd courses portioned like a tasting menu and third courses, like entrees. Chilled Dungeness crab legs, w/ lemon aioli, drawn butter and cocktail sauce was delicious. American paddlefish caviar on buckwheat blinis, creme fraiche and chives atop melted butter were divine. Large seared scallop on a generous bed of truffled polenta, kale and crisp pancetta - fabulous. Hawaiian Tombo tuna with trumpet mushrooms, baby bok Choy in a red miso broth, terrific. Seared sole with truffled sweet potato raviolis, sautéed crispy baby artichokes and brown butter. Truly lovely - more than enough. Check was just under $200 (without tip) for drinks and food. Fabulous meal. Sent from my iPad"

  • "Sat at table near the kitchen. So quite loud and busy. Some tables are more secluded and private. Good quality seafood, well prepared"

  • "The underwater world decor which could easily be kitsch actually serves as a great backdrop to this seafood restaurant. Really good, fresh cuisine. My client loved the choice of oysters from 6 different areas and promptly tried them all! Very surprising wine list, have never seen so many Austrian wines listed even in Europe! Definitely would visit again."

  • "Anytime I am in San Francisco and want to go to a special place, I always choose Farallon. The food is fresh and innovative, the wait staff is especially helpful, informative, and proactive, and the decor is fun and historic at the same time. It all blends together into a very special, enjoyable meal."

  • "We enjoy fine dining and have dined at fine restaurants all over the country. We have seen small portions, but Farallon takes the prize for the skimpiest. The service was very good and the food was quite tasty. The portions were extremely small for the price. We each had one alcoholic beverage. We shared a shrimp cocktail. We shared a beet salad which was quite tasty, but again a very small portions. My wife had the sole and I had the split lobster which means half a lobster. It was suprisingly small for the money. We did not have any sides, but we did have dessert which again were small portions. When all was said and done, we paid $205. The good food and service don't outweigh the portion size. It's doubtful we will come back."

  • "I had the seared bass, was probably the best fish dish I've ever had! My husband had the cod-and loved it. The decor and story behind it was wonderful-thanks."

  • "Farallon is always a very safe choice for fresh, wonderful seafood. I had the scallop course #2 and the white char for entrie. Both cooked perfect and it was a real treat taking a friend who had never been there before. The Chihule glass jellyfish are timeless and my friend really enjoyed the sceptic decor."

  • "We were on our honeymoon when we dined at Farallon. I can barely remember our meals because our service was so poor. Once our waiter took our order we really did not have much interaction from him until it was time for the check. The high note of the evening was the water and bread guy who was more attentive than our server. We know that he was capable of better service as we saw him deliver it to all of his other tables that night. If he represents the type of service available at Farallon we will never go back and will not encourage our friends to go either. In my opinion a table of 2 deserves just as much attention as a table of 6. We regret spending our money and time here."

  • "Delicious food, awesome waitstaff. My favorite part of dinning here was hands-down the interior... it is just jaw-droopingly beautiful, making this place perfect for special occasion dinners. Highly recommended."

  • "We visited Farallon on Saturday, March 8 for a birthday celebration after making reservations two weeks in advance. The restaurant reviews on OpenTable and Yelp were fantastic, which primarily guided our choice. We had no idea that it was going to be such a beautiful location as well. Our waiter was BEYOND attentive, nearly to the point where we were shooing him away so we could make some decisions. We all decided upon a "first course" choice and a "third course" choice, foregoing the heavier "second choice" offerings. Being quite a foodie, I have to say, the food was amazing. Not the best I have ever had, but very very good. Even dessert was EXCELLENT. For ~$100 a person, including alcohol, it was worth every penny!"
