The dining room is gorgeous, the service attentive, and the food delicious: especially the pinquito beans. The prices are more expensive than other Santa Maria style barbecue places. Other establishments will offer relish tray, soup or salad, desert, coffee with their meals (though this may be for dinner). Lunch was $22.00 for a modest sirloin steak. A small glass of a local pinot noir was $10.00 (the same amount of their corkage fee so bring your own wine.) All in all a pleasant and pricey meal.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst time at the new locationFirst time at the new location for the Far Western Tavern, it is a very elegant place now and really gives the feel of an upscale steak house. It seems expensive at first, but if you order alecarte it is, so order the complete dinner. The servicings are more then ample size. I would highly recommend the grilled romaine salad, but note that it is large enough to share. The menu is missing a number of the classic items that were on the old menu, but it still has the core items, such as the 14 oz rib eye. They were very accommodating and were concerned that we had to wait. They ended up setting up a private table on the patio with a heater. Miss the tradition of the old location and had been going there periodically for 40 years but this new location should serve them well. Old Orcutt is a great place if they had to move --due to that retrofit needed at the old place. Took the folks out for their anniversary and we all had a great time. I had the steak and eggs as we went for brunch. Everyone from the hostesses to the bus persons were upbeat, friendly and intent on making us feel welcome and cared for. One of our party does not care for seafood and our waiter arranged for a substitute appetizer she really enjoyed. All the food was great and plentiful. We agreed the steaks were among the best we'd ever had. The service was top notch as well. Salad not chilled and prepared as it used to be. Lettuce looked like it came from a bag not re-hydrated and chilled. Salad use to come with beets and purple cabbage and exceptional dressing not from a bottle. The steak sandwich was cube steak which is unheard of in this area. They could take a few good lessons from Jockos. Our server and the rest of the staff was exceptionally good. It was a "special day out". I was hesitant to lose that memory by visiting the new location. But everything and everyone at the restaurant made a very "memorable" occasion of the afternoon for myself and my friends. I can get the same meal at Shaws or the Swiss for much less and same quality. I would only recommend for a special occasion.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Mix of Original and NewI grew up in Santa Maria and dined occasionally at the original Far Western in Guadalupe, starting back in the 1960s. It was always a treat. As I grew to adulthood, I especially came to appreciate the quality of beef and the excellence of it's preparation (not to mention the shrimp cocktail). The new Far Western carefully and cheerfully incorporates decor from the old hotel building in Guadalupe, and in overall feel and design evokes memories of the old dining room. Better, the food has all the flavor and portion size of the original kitchen (including the shrimp), complimented now with better accompaniments (salad was wonderful) and great presentation. I ordered the sirloin dinner and my steak was cooked to perfection. I brought my brother here and he said this was the best steak he has had in a long time, and that he would be back again.
