A word from Far Western Tavern
Welcome to the Far Western Tavern—contemporary California ranch cuisine inspired by local traditions.

Our restaurant is recognized as a landmark of Santa Maria Style Barbecue, a renowned regional fare rooted in native ingredients and methods that were first popularized by 19th century rancheros.

Our menu blends this local barbecue style with other dishes that reflect our family’s heritage in the Santa Maria Valley’s Swiss-Italian ranching community, all prepared with fresh flavors from nearby farms, ranches and vineyards.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had the best Server George and the best meal we really enjoyed the atmosphere and people"

  • "We got the beef special (like a beef stew) and it was fantastic. Had it before and will order it every time they have it."

  • "I had been here for dinner previously and the food and service was excellent. Went this Sunday and they only had brunch, we had wanted lunch. Ordered the shrimp, unavailable. Tried the scallops, had a very strange texture and wasn't very good. I also had the beef skewers, meat was cooked correctly, but was chewy. The chimichuri sauce was just vinegar and oil. My niece had a burger, it was ok but you can get burgers anywhere. We only get to go to lunch once a month and this month we were disappointed."

  • "Awesome food! Loved everything we ordered. Only thing was we were not asked if we wanted more water and we were having wine, also could never find the waitress when we needed her."

  • "After an exceptional dining experience two weeks prior, this was a disappointment. Two of the three meals were as ordered. The signature ribeye was over cooked. How it was rectified was not acceptable. Far Western Tavern has been a family treat for special occasions for over 25 years. This birthday meal was a disappointment."

  • "We only get here once a year when we are in Central Coast wine country - but we really enjoy the food and the rustic feel of the place. We have been here long enough to know the original and we like the new better as it is just a bit more up to date and the floors are flat! We had a lovely wine with the meal and the selection and prices are exceptional. Will be back when we are next in the area."

  • "I am 67 years of age and have been dining at FW since mid-single digit. I like the new building, think it was designed logically and certainly fits my needs. My Wife and I live in North Scottsdale Arizona. Lots of world class restaurants. At FW I like food set up; the shrimp coctail, excellent salad and ample servings. I have to say my baby back rib dinner was not near notable. The ribs were quality. I like the fact that FW and Jocko's don't serve their ribs wet and sticky. These rib were gorgeous. The BBQ taste was poor. I am not even sure that they were BBQ'd"

  • "Always yummy steaks. Great service. One of my favorite places to eat."

  • "WE remember the old location in Guadalupe and its casual friendliness and excellent dining experience. This Orcutt facility has managed to keep all of that, and added an easy elegance which the Guadalupe facility did not have. We will certainly come again!"

  • "Loved the new place however, they did sit us near the bar which was really loud."

  • "This was our third visit to the restaurant since its move. We had 7pm reservations on Saturday and were seated immediately. Service was top-notch throughout. Our party of 4 all had steaks and they were perfect. I don't understand why some chain steakhouses can't be consistent, but it seems Far Western Tavern always is. Always a treat to dine here."

  • "In its heyday in Guadalupe it was one of the top 3 Santa Maria Steakhouses, along with Jocko's and the Hitching Post. No more. Just a run-of-the-mill American restaurant now. In our party of 4, only 1 considered the meal good: she had the swordfish special of the day. I had a steak and it was decidedly ho-hum. The other diners had the Pork Chop (He considered it dry and lacking flavor) and the Shrimp (She called it a "mistake to have ordered it")."

  • "Chose Far Western Tavern to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary on suggestion from a friend, even though we had to drive another half hour from where we were staying in Pismo Beach. So glad we did! Food (and drink) was simply amazing. Love the choice of "classic" inclusive dinners or a la carte. Where we're from, you just don't see relish trays, shrimp cocktail, and coffee included with a meal anymore. Ribeye steak & pork chop incredible. Very generous portions, cooked to perfection. BEST roasted vegetables I've ever had at a restaurant and my husband loved his grilled polenta side. Only gave 4 stars for service and ambience as bus boy, while respectful, seemed a bit green and we got a small table by the kitchen. Fairly casual dress OK"

  • "This was my third trip to Far Western Tavern and it did not disappoint. Most of us had the classic dinner which comes with shrimp cocktail, relish tray, soup or salad and main course. Shrimp cocktail was great as were the salads-very cold and crisp. The petit filet and Pinot filet were excellent. I had mine medium rare and it was tender, tasty and juicy. The garlic mashed potatoes were a hit with everyone. Our server was great and seemed knowledgable about the wine list. We did go with a Pinot noir that she recommended and it was very good. We will definitely be back."

  • "I've dined at Far Western several times in the last two years. It just always seems to get better! On this visit, there were 4 in our party. We all felt the food quality was superior and our waiter, George, was awesome. My husband had the swordfish special, I had the ribeye, and one of of friends had the pork chop. Everything was cooked to perfection. Looking forward to the next special occasion when we can return to the Far Western."

  • "I have been going to the Far Western Tavern for over 30 years. Their move to Old Orcutt was a great call! The décor along with the newness is just what it needed to bring it from a great place to eat in an old historical building, to a fantastic place to go with a real classy, yet classic steak house ambience. Excellent food and excellent service included. I Love It!!"

  • "While this place has been around for a while (1958), it has just moved to this location about 2 years ago. We are relatively new to the area and this place was suggested by friends who had eaten at the old location. At 1st look at their menu, it appears on the high side. However, after ordering the complete dinner (versus ala carte) it is really a value! It isn't cheap, but quantity and quality of the food was amazing. Three of us ordered steaks and 1 ordered ribs. The dinners include a small appetizer, shrimp salad, sides, soup or salad and a great cup of coffee! We went early (5ish) so we were some of the first being served. However, by the time we left, 2 hours later, the place was pretty near full. Will definitely will go back."

  • "Very friendly staff! Enjoyed our dining experience - The wait staff was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive! 4 guests of our party had never dined at the Far Western. They were very impressed and would definitely return!"

  • "We all thought (8) the exterior architecture very handsome and approiate, and the interior was awesome. My wife was particularry impressed with the use of the cow hides. We all had a great meal and our server, Gordon, was great."

  • "Ordered the steak sandwich, have no idea what kind of meat was in it, reminded me of the old cube steak,a piece of mystery meat that was put through a meat tenderizer. Everything else, beans and French fries were very good."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "The food was delicious and the service was great. The best part, however, is that I had noted a special request for a quiet space as my father's hearing is poor and I wanted him to be able to participate in conversation with our table of 5. We arrived and were shown to a table that was away from the main dining room that provided the quiet requested and it made the experience enjoyable for all...especially my dad who we were honoring early for Father's Day. Thank you!"

  • "The Food and Service were Very Good. The restaurant is beautifully decorated! Both of my parents ordered the steak tacos and they said they were filling and delicious. They loved the pinquito beans. My husband said the Farmer Burger was really good, but said he needed mustard (and he does not like to ask). I had the Rancher 8 oz Top Sirloin Steak. It was tender and had great flavor. The French Fries were the best I have eaten. Really! These Fries were hot from the fryer and were seasoned perfectly! I was the only one who had dessert. I had the Cheesecake and it was worth every calorie. It is a real treat to eat at the Far Western Tavern."

  • "If your ever passing thru Orcutt, CA you need to stop at the Far Western Tavern. In my 30 + years of going to this restaurant, I have never been disappointed. The steaks are amazing! This restaurant features an extensive Wine list of many local wineries. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are large. In fact I have never had room for dessert so I can't comment on this aspect of the dinner. Special note: sit at the bar for a drink and enjoy their homemade potato chips."

  • "This was my first time there and I loved it. I wanted to take my girlfriend to a romantic dinner and this is definitely the place to go. The waitress was excellent, service was great, and the dinner was amazing. I would strongly recommend this place. "

  • "The traditional décor of the Guadalupe location still lives here, but is very clean, fresh and revived. One of the most classy places around. The cocktails in the bar area are very good and it is a great place to meet for cocktails. Since the bar area is on the smaller side and many people prefer to eat in the bar area it can get VERY crowded and thus very noisy. The dining room was much more relaxed and quiet than the bar area. I had the 8 oz. Cowboy Cut that included relish tray, shrimp cocktail, salad, beans and bread. The only drawback: whoever works the grill just can't seem to get the steak "just right." Mine was a bit dry and "done" since I asked for it medium rare. It was edible and I didn't send it back to avoid the hassle."

  • "Held a business dinner there. Everything was very nice. The only complaint was the evening sun was streaming directly in people's faces and there were no shades to draw down. Once the sun set far enough, it was fine. Food was excellent and we loved the breadsticks. The relish tray was not as good as the Hitching Post's... A little bit sparse and presentation was lacking. Everybody enjoyed their meals."

  • "Our entire party enjoyed beef selections the evening we visited Far Western. Every steak was tender, moist and cooked to perfection. . My wife grew up on the central coast, and stated that the food is very authentic to the region and culture of the area, including some of the Italian influences that are historic to the region. Definitely where we will be stopping from now on, we have a new favorite in the area!"

  • "Classic dinners are good, prices may seem high until you see what's included. Shrimp cocktail was very good. I had surf and turf, shrimp scampi was just so-so, but Steak was tasty. Glad they moved to Orcutt."

  • "We were born and raised in the Santa Maria valley and the Far Western has been part of our lives for 50 years or more. We now live in the San Joaquin Valley and HAVE to return to our roots for the best steak in California. We miss the old building in Guadalupe but the new place in Orcuitt is very nice and the expanded menu is nice - however we come for the steak! We are always recommending it to our friends."

  • "The staff is so friendly in helpful in selecting best local wines and cuts of steak. We had appetizers, cocktails, wine, main course and dessert with our party of five. EVERYTHING was incredibly good!"

  • "Home of great steaks. The six of us, including a 2 yr old and 4 yr old, had a great experience at the Far Western in Orcutt, CA. This is local to us. We were in an almost private room - didn't need to worry about disturbing others or being disturbed. The filet mignon with scampi (surf&turf) were outstanding, as were the salmon and the BullsEye steak. Drinks were perfect as was the wine. And the deserts were superb. Just a great experience all around."

  • "We went for a birthday with a group of six. The restaurant is beautiful and the wait staff fantastic. The food though, in my opinion, was far different from the original restaurant that we loved in Guadalupe. The wait on our dinners was over an hour and although a couple of us got shrimp cocktails and salads included in our meals, the rest of us were left watching them enjoy while we waited for our dinner. I would love to see some kind of relish trays or bread served while we're waiting. They did offer bread sticks but no type of butter or salsa to dip them in. Other than that, the meals were good."
    Dined on 3/11/2014
  • "The restaurant has been a tradition in my family for over 50 years. This was the first time we have been to the NEW location in Old Town Orcutt. What a wonderful meal. We took my parents who had not been to the restaurant in years based difficulty in traveling to the central coast. There were six us of and the service was fabulous. They suggested a local wine with our meal which was very reasonably priced and we all tried something different. Their grilled chicken in Rosemary butter and beer is now a favorite. My husband and father had the lamb and they raved about it. Old Town is a wonderful little gem and we hope to spend many fun meals with friends and family at the Far Western."
