A word from Family Recipe
2013 & 2014 Michelin Bib Gourmand Awardee!
Family Recipe opened on the Lower East Side in September of 2011. The concept grew out of chef/owner Akiko Thurnauer's experiences growing up with a food-obsessed family in Tokyo, Japan, but her cuisine is influenced by her appreciation of New York City and other places around the world. It's not traditional Japanese food; as the New York Times put it, it's "food for the way we live now," satisfying and surprising, created and served in a stylish open kitchen. We call it cooking from the heart. Welcome to Family Recipe!

Really interesting riff on
Japanese Home Style, like hanging out in a Yokohama coffee house with a band of traveling jazz musicians. Very creative interpretations of old standards."

I made a reservation for 6 people
on a Friday night. The restaurant was pretty well attended when all 3 of us couples arrived. We were seated promptly, but it was at that point that the wait staff seemed to get in the weeds. Our drinks came in really slowly, but it wasn't a big deal. The entire staff was super friendly and apologized about it. and the drinks were excellent when they arrived. Furthermore, the waitress accommodating two of us by swapping out some sakes on the sake flight. What's surprising is that such a tiny kitchen is able to churn out so many wonderful dishes. I'll definitely go back and would absolutely recommend it."

Excellent Japanese home style
cooking. Quiet. Friendly. Not expensive. Definitely going back."

Not your typical run-of-the-mill
Japanese menu. These are creative, unique dishes you are not going to find elsewhere. Worth paying a bit more than you might at an average Japanese restaurant. Our server was delightful."

The dishes were creative and
interesting but failed on execution. We had the uni apps and the ratio of uni to bread was off. I can't rate the bone marrow because I'm not a huge fan of it. Finally, the duck main course was overcooked. Instead of a beautiful medium rare that we asked for, we were served medium well. A medium well duck = chewy and tough. The restaurant is in a great location. The interior decoration is adorable. I hope they fix the dishes in the near future."

Great food, Great ambience, pisco
sour is wonderful and people is friendly. Many reasons to come back, I think. Ceviche are outstanding...i think anyone should try Peruvian cuisine!"

Family recipe is definitely my
favorite restaurant! I love the inventive and creative spin on classic flavors. They continue to amaze me every time. They are also extremely accommodating for various dietary restrictions. I'm a vegan, and I never feel like I'm missing out on anything! The only problem is that I can never decide what I want and end up ordering half the menu!"

This is a beautiful tiny gem of a
place. I've been 5 times and it never disappoints. Vegetarians and gluten-free can be very happy here. I love the sake flights. The food is delicate and hand-crafted- delicious and surprising. The chef is phenomenal. And great attentive service."

Even if you bring a hungry family
of foodies, as I did, and try to order one of everything off of the menu, Family Recipe is worth at least two solid visits. My vegetarian father found incredible dishes that the rest of us loved, too. And the more adventurous carnivores among us were in gastronomic delight with the sheer range of flavors this lovely young chef threw at us. I can't wait to go back with friends!"

The food is tasty and unique. I
enjoyed the food a lot except that the portions are a bit small. I like every dish we ordered. The dumplings dish is a must have. The waiter and waitress are very friendly and nice, although when there are more customers they are rather busy to catch."

This is the second time that I
have eaten at Family Recipe and the experience was consistent, from the service, to the food. The wait staff are nice and attentive. The food is amazing! I am a vegan but my best friend is not which is what makes FamRec so great because there is something for everyone. The portions are more than generous which allows for sharing and trying different dishes- or not-I had the cauliflower steak with squash and fried Brussels sprouts entree and didn't share. Recommendations: start with the pickles and kimchi. The kimchi is spicy and savory so if heat isn't your thing, try the edamame. My friend went wide eyes over the pork buns and rice bowl. The mushroom salad is tasty, flavorful and light."

Had a great time and delicious
dinner with my wife and kids. Both drinks and food stood out! Highly recommend the bone Marrow."
Dined on 9/29/2013
The brunch was great! The size was
good that it was pretty filling. I also looked through the dinner menu. It looks great but I suggest they can add more selections there..."

Personable chef-owner turning out
inspired Asian fare with innovative treats of familiar ingredients. As all, special spot in area chock full of them, worth the trip."

When our bill came, the server was
very honest & patient w/ making the necessary recalculations on our bill using the voucher we presented. That was much appreciated. And she had a pleasant smile."

The food was very flavorful. Our
drinks were delicious. Service was excellent."

Nice local LES dining spot,
relatively cheap with pretty creative dishes. Not outstanding food but definitely interesting an nice atmosphere"

Ate early in the evening so the
restaurant was very nice and quiet and the kind waiter matched the atmosphere with good service. Friendly, no-attitude, which is always great. Small restaurant with a diverse menu that will meet the needs of vegans to meat-eaters. The Burdock Roots and Eggplant buns were very tasty--good soft, fresh quality bun and the vegetables were seasoned in a vibrant manner. The kale dumplings had little taste, except the slightly spicy sauce, and the dumpling wrapper was tough. As far as I could tell the Kimchi Fried Rice Bowl didn't have any kimchi in it! But, all in all, I will go back to try more dishes. I like the food because it feels like it's Asian-with-a-twist, but not trying hard!"

I have been waiting to go to this
restaurant since I saw the chef at chopped, I was not disappointed. The place is a cute quite street, the food is amazing and the place is warm and welcome. Must haves are the pork belly buns ad the cold ramen noodles with duck breast. And if u t lucky and they have the dessert special of green tea crepes u shouldn't hesitate and get it. One of the best desserts I have ever had!"

We really enjoyed food here, very
creative with familiar Japanese menu and ingredients (as Japanese, I am) . Hope they have better sake selection. Also, fried chicken wings could be more crispy since sauce made meat too wet."
Dined on 5/15/2013
The food was a mixture of Asian
and all so delicious. Will eat here often."
Dined on 7/6/2013
Great flavors in superb looking
dishes. Subtle, smart and sensibly served. Wine quality unsuspected at this price and a charming atmosphere. Kids friendly and yet romantic. Definitely recommended!"
Dined on 7/7/2013
There really weren't any stand out
dishes and half of the dishes were overly salty. I was really looking forward to the meal and my fellow diners and I were left completely unsatisfied, vowing to never come back. The short ribs dish looked and tasted more like beef tenderloin, brussel sprouts were too salty. Pork buns, I've had waaay better elsewhere. The salted fish shrimp fried rice was ridiculously salty, granted given the name it should be but I've had similar dishes before and when done properly, the dish is very savory but not overly salty. Honestly don't know where all the good reviews on yelp came from."

My wife and I met with a close
friend and had a wonderful night. Our server was great, and the food was outstanding! :)"
Dined on 6/15/2013
We had the 5 course vegetarian
tasting and the food was so delicious that I am already looking forward to the next trip back. The food is amazing! The atmosphere is very casual and cozy (tables are very close together) and you will likely hear your neighbor's conversation. While the waiter was very nice and very personable, he was not very attentive - it was difficult to get his attention to order our drinks throughout the evening or to get the check."
Dined on 6/13/2013
Calm and quiet. No rush. we had a
delicious dinner of miso brussel sprouts, Cauilfower steak, (with chinese bacon), short ribs and mango/watermelon/shrimp salad. Oh, and pork buns-"
Dined on 5/21/2013
I loved the brussels sprouts with
miso butter, ginger shiitake mushroom dumplings, tofu hijiki scramble rice bowl, and the smoked pineapple rice pudding. Family Recipe is a lovely place."

A lot of potential. Really wanted
to like the place but the food just really wasn't good..!"
Dined on 5/17/2013
We had a few occasions to
celebrate and I wanted a place which we've never been to before. It's in a sort of the hole type area, most of the other restaurants around it were completely empty while it was quite busy. I thought the dishes were very pricy. Yes, there were some unique ingredients, but for example a "Cauliflower" steak Entree was $22. for a DELICIOUS plate of vegetables! a bit much, no? It was the same price for the evening special of "brick" chicken. The service was very attentive, but i felt the food was not worth the value."

If you love Japanese food but are
in the market for inventive Japanese, you should consider Family Recipe. "Inventive Japanese" means their take on how to serve lamb sausage to what some would typically expect from a traditional soborodon. While not every dish hit the mark for me, I appreciated every single one for the chef's effort to introduce something better than the same old favorites."

We went to Family Recipe for
Mother's Day Brunch and had an enjoyable experience overall. The cocktail choices were enticing and everything on the menu looked delicious. Definitely would like to go back for dinner next time."
Dined on 5/12/2013
This is a really quiet cool little
place. The food was great and its very unique. I liked the vibe alot."
Dined on 4/16/2013
simply wonderful neighborhood gem
with exceptionally delicious inventive food."
Dined on 5/6/2013
This is some of the best food
we've eaten. There's nothing quite like getting to taste things that you wouldn't have even thought of making. Fresh, vibrant, plenty of "comfort" food style stuff, but, also yummy clean lighter fare, though with plenty of flavor. Sake cocktails hit the spot."
Dined on 4/26/2013
They have a list of good casual
Japanese foods. If you want to try non-sushi, non-sashimi type Japanese food, I would recommend here. As me being a Japanese, I feel their foods are a little overpriced, though. Their foods are home-cooking style, so over $12 price tag is a bit much to me."
Dined on 4/21/2013
Get the tapas/appetizers.
Everything we had was delicious particularly the Brussel sprouts, lamb sausage and the cedar-wrapped cod"
Dined on 4/19/2013
We were a group of three and came
in for an early dinner right after opening, and found the staff well prepared both service- and cooking wise. Being vegetarians, we found plenty of options and shared a bunch of exciting tapas as well as a wonderful bowl of scrambled tofu and rice. Our recommendation couldn't be warmer."
Dined on 4/18/2013
The food was really tasty, really
well prepared, great textures, but the service was not quite comparable. Morning disastrous or rude happened, but we were told we had been seated at the wrong table and were asked to move. Then even though our tapas came out one by one slowly, we still had a long wait for our entree after finishing our third tapas. Our waiter and server were attentive but not really sophisticated per say, as at other Michelin restaurants. That said, we still recommend it and I am sure we will go back."
