A word from Family Recipe
2013 & 2014 Michelin Bib Gourmand Awardee!
Family Recipe opened on the Lower East Side in September of 2011. The concept grew out of chef/owner Akiko Thurnauer's experiences growing up with a food-obsessed family in Tokyo, Japan, but her cuisine is influenced by her appreciation of New York City and other places around the world. It's not traditional Japanese food; as the New York Times put it, it's "food for the way we live now," satisfying and surprising, created and served in a stylish open kitchen. We call it cooking from the heart. Welcome to Family Recipe!

We ate at Family Recipe early on a Sunday night. There were only two other tables seated so it was very pleasant. The design of the restaurant is very open and it was a nice day so we felt like we could enjoy the weather inside. The food was very interesting. More creative cuisine than your typical Izakaya. Particularly, there were a lot of vegetarian options. I loved the Cauliflower Steak with puréed edamame and curry oil. Delicious. There were many things I wanted to try on the menu and I will go back. The waitress was very sweet and pleasant and plenty attentive. The decor was relaxing and aesthetically pleasing. They do a lot with a small space to make it feel open.

I have been to Family Recipe for both dinner and brunch a number of times. The food is delicious! The ingredients are always fresh and of high quality. We went for brunch this last time and I had the waffles and chicken wings and my friend ordered the short ribs and eggs, both excellent. We also got an order of the mouthwatering fois gras dumplings - highly recommended!

I dined at Family Recipe with two vegans and one meat-eater. There were an above average number of interesting options for vegetarians/vegans/gluten free. It felt like the restaurant didn't have to work hard to create options for these sometimes difficult diets. Everyone enjoyed the meal and was satisfied.

The food portions were too small even when its indicated as a larger plate. Overall the whole menu is overpriced for the amount of food they serve. The waitress kept rushing us for our order, yet there was no one in restaurant. They only have one restroom and it didn't flush. I would never go back to this place.

The food was unusual but everything was tasty. However, prices are quite expensive and overpriced for portion size. Nice place to duck into for some snacks to share or an entree only -- but a three course meal here would set you back a pretty penny.

I made a reservation for 6 people on a Friday night. The restaurant was pretty well attended when all 3 of us couples arrived. We were seated promptly, but it was at that point that the wait staff seemed to get in the weeds. Our drinks came in really slowly, but it wasn't a big deal. The entire staff was super friendly and apologized about it. and the drinks were excellent when they arrived. Furthermore, the waitress accommodating two of us by swapping out some sakes on the sake flight. What's surprising is that such a tiny kitchen is able to churn out so many wonderful dishes. I'll definitely go back and would absolutely recommend it.

The dishes were creative and interesting but failed on execution. We had the uni apps and the ratio of uni to bread was off. I can't rate the bone marrow because I'm not a huge fan of it. Finally, the duck main course was overcooked. Instead of a beautiful medium rare that we asked for, we were served medium well. A medium well duck = chewy and tough. The restaurant is in a great location. The interior decoration is adorable. I hope they fix the dishes in the near future.

Family recipe is definitely my favorite restaurant! I love the inventive and creative spin on classic flavors. They continue to amaze me every time. They are also extremely accommodating for various dietary restrictions. I'm a vegan, and I never feel like I'm missing out on anything! The only problem is that I can never decide what I want and end up ordering half the menu!

Even if you bring a hungry family of foodies, as I did, and try to order one of everything off of the menu, Family Recipe is worth at least two solid visits. My vegetarian father found incredible dishes that the rest of us loved, too. And the more adventurous carnivores among us were in gastronomic delight with the sheer range of flavors this lovely young chef threw at us. I can't wait to go back with friends!

This is the second time that I have eaten at Family Recipe and the experience was consistent, from the service, to the food. The wait staff are nice and attentive. The food is amazing! I am a vegan but my best friend is not which is what makes FamRec so great because there is something for everyone. The portions are more than generous which allows for sharing and trying different dishes- or not-I had the cauliflower steak with squash and fried Brussels sprouts entree and didn't share. Recommendations: start with the pickles and kimchi. The kimchi is spicy and savory so if heat isn't your thing, try the edamame. My friend went wide eyes over the pork buns and rice bowl. The mushroom salad is tasty, flavorful and light.

Ate early in the evening so the restaurant was very nice and quiet and the kind waiter matched the atmosphere with good service. Friendly, no-attitude, which is always great. Small restaurant with a diverse menu that will meet the needs of vegans to meat-eaters. The Burdock Roots and Eggplant buns were very tasty--good soft, fresh quality bun and the vegetables were seasoned in a vibrant manner. The kale dumplings had little taste, except the slightly spicy sauce, and the dumpling wrapper was tough. As far as I could tell the Kimchi Fried Rice Bowl didn't have any kimchi in it! But, all in all, I will go back to try more dishes. I like the food because it feels like it's Asian-with-a-twist, but not trying hard!

There really weren't any stand out dishes and half of the dishes were overly salty. I was really looking forward to the meal and my fellow diners and I were left completely unsatisfied, vowing to never come back. The short ribs dish looked and tasted more like beef tenderloin, brussel sprouts were too salty. Pork buns, I've had waaay better elsewhere. The salted fish shrimp fried rice was ridiculously salty, granted given the name it should be but I've had similar dishes before and when done properly, the dish is very savory but not overly salty. Honestly don't know where all the good reviews on yelp came from.

We had the 5 course vegetarian tasting and the food was so delicious that I am already looking forward to the next trip back. The food is amazing! The atmosphere is very casual and cozy (tables are very close together) and you will likely hear your neighbor's conversation. While the waiter was very nice and very personable, he was not very attentive - it was difficult to get his attention to order our drinks throughout the evening or to get the check.
