A word from Family Recipe

Family Recipe opened on the Lower East Side in September of 2011. The concept grew out of chef/owner Akiko Thurnauer's experiences growing up with a food-obsessed family in Tokyo, Japan, but her cuisine is influenced by her appreciation of New York City and other places around the world. It's not… traditional Japanese food; as the New York Times put it, it's "food for the way we live now," satisfying and surprising, created and served in a stylish open kitchen. "I really enjoyed Family Recipe. I was pleasantly surprised at just HOW DELICIOUS it was!!!! I was really hoping for some delicious Japanese food, but I was floored at just HOW delicious and complex the flavors were. I highly recommend this place!!"

"This place was amazing. The women chefs wear fedora's and button up shirts behind their aprons and while you watch them prepare all the delicious dishes you are about to inhale. The food was properly proportioned for sharing, tasty and well presented. The food is also unique in that it is not traditionally Japanese, but everything the chef's enjoy cooking so everything is made with care. I loved the scene, the funky vibe and of course the sparkling sake...you have to try it."

"Loved the flavor of the food - we tried the Mushroom Dumplings, Heritage Sausage with Curry and the House Okonomiyaki. Service was great until they got busy - there is only one waitress and it was full house so it took a while for her to come around to our table to take my credit card. Other than that service was excellent. It was a bit too noisy. At times everyone in my group had to really raised their voices in order to have a converstaion. No sure if it was the design of the room that trapped all the noise. Oversall it was an excellent experience and I would return, making sure to have an early dinner to avoid the noise and the delay in service."

"like any great family recipe, the food at this cozy neighborhood location is prepared with a healthy dash of care & love with a generous helping of attentive & informative service. check this one out for the best Okonomiyaki (the japanese version of a pizza - if it were made with tofu instead of cheese & dough!), mixed rice bowl specials that change seasonally and amazing desserts before it is "discovered" by foodie hordes!"

"Not your typical Japanese Restaurant. No sushi, sashimi or Teriyaki dish. Only delicate, home cook dishes prepared by Chef Akiko which are full of surprises to your taste buds. Seasonal menu uses the freshest ingredients. From appetizer to dessert, everything is unique and delicious. Will definitely go back again!!"

"If you want to try something different and good, this is the place. Every dish we had was great. It's been only a few months, so there is a room for improvent for the service. Not a traditional Japanese but more like Japanese home cooking.....make sense the name "Family Recipe"."
