Diner Reviews
  • "Visiting Frederick with a friend, we headed to Family Meal for dinner. We started with beverages and 2/3 of us ordered adult milkshakes. Both the Irish Coffee and Strawberry Rhubarb milkshakes were delicious. We continued with the chicken pot pie fritters (very tasty) and hoecakes (which had some issues, specifically the bacon in them was hard as a rock and being such a thick dice meant we were left with inedible bacon that hurt if you had the misfortune of trying to bite down on it). We mentioned the bacon issue to the server, even showing it to him and he said, "Thank you for the feedback. I'll let them know." We still had to pay for those. Hotcakes (BFD), a burger, and Fried Chicken Dinner rounded out the meal - all enjoyed thoroughly."

  • "The wait staff and chef worked really hard to create a meal for my wife upon learning of her allergy to onions. They, or a related spice or veg were in everything on the menu, so the chef ad-libbed. made for a very enjoyable and tasty experience."

  • "Expectations were v high & they were met - for the most part. The room is bright but usually crowded. Make reservations. On a Sat noon we chose a taste & share lunch of several appetizers and the fried chicken. The chicken pot pie fritters & dev eggs were superb . But the duck fat fries were soggy. The normal portion of fried chicken more than enough for sharing. It was perfectly cooked but don't expect a battered traditional southern fried chicken - it arrives under a thin coating of spiced rub somewhat reminiscent of "shake 'n bake" but much better. The service was attentive but the server did not know much about the ingredients. The bill for two, with one beer , was $46 including tip - which we thought was a reasonable value."

  • "Enjoyed the duck fat fries and the brussels sprouts. Wine over-priced. Service good. Shrimp & grits good but not spicy (unfortunately)."

  • "Excellent meal. This is my fourth time to this restaurant and the food and service are both always excellent."

  • "Loved this place and will be back! Quality, flavor and variety of food very good. One of our meals dinner portion was very satisfying; while the other dinner portion was less than satisfying (halibut). A little nostalgic for us because we bought many cars from that particular Nissan dealership - loved the industrial look of the restaurant. Service was excellent! Server very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable We were looking forward to dining at Family Meal and were not disappointed!"

  • "Not a foody but gave in to my wife after a year of my her wanting to go and made reservations for our anniversary. Arrived early and didn't really need the reservations. Very quick service! Everything was excellent! Fried chicken was awesome..and duck fat fried potatoes a must..desert was also awesome Only suprise was that our waitress was not as friendly as we expected a server at a high end restaurant to be."

  • "I use to love Family Meal and always chose to dine there by myself and with friends. Lately, the quality of food is not quite what it use to be. A bit disappointed that some of my favorite items have been removed even though it gives me the opportunity to try new things these dishes were amazing, (risotto). I hope it is soon back on target. I gave a rating of good not necessarily for the food but the Passion Fruit ice tea it's the best ice tea ever!"

  • "Food was great. A little pricey, but to be expected. We will definitely go back and recommend to others. Parking is awesome."

  • "We are from out of town and are trying to experience as many of Frederick's excellent restaurants as we can in three weeks. Family Meal is a casual, yet high quality eatery. Food was well prepared, imaginative, and healthy. Not a huge menu, but a nice variety and we can't wait to go back. Next time, we'll try the sitting at the bar so we can watch what's going on in the kitchen. Service was outstanding...knowledgeable wait staff who were not intrusive during dinner, but friendly enough to make us feel quite comfortable. The aprons were a nice touch! Excellent experience."

  • "I always enjoy a visit to Family Meal. It never disappoints. The menu chances with the seasons so there is always something new to try."

  • "Venue was near perfect for the occassion. A good selection of beers, wines and specialty cocktails made for a nice start and my guests liked the focus on very well-prepared "comfort foods." Pricing was reasonable and the service was quite friendly but not intrusive. Everyone loved the "duck fat" fries and the deserts were a real treat. The only downside (and it really was not that much of an issue) is that the booth seating was rather small for my party (in this context a table would have been better) but larger tables were just not available. Still, this was a small point and did not dtract from the dinner. Would definitely recommend."

  • "I am in the transition of moving my family back to the Frederick area and am thrilled to have this dining option so close to my home. Great service, great menu, delicious food. Online reservation system is easy to use. It's clear this restaurant and its staff are operating with clear direction and training."

  • "I ordered the fish sandwich and it came with a heavy batter that was oily. When I tried to cut it, it sprayed oil all over my shirt and ruined it. I also though perhaps it had been cooked too long. This was the first time I was not happy after having eaten at Family Meal. We eat there pretty often and I have never had a bad experience."

  • "Other than our open table lunch reservation not making it to the restaurant, we were seated right away. We had read reviews of the place that were not great but we thought we'd give it a try anyhow. We were glad we did! The food was great! The service was great! It was not pretentious at all. The chicken pot pie fritters were awesome. It's a very casual place. We plan to go back for dinner."

  • "Although we waited to sit a table instead of sitting at the bar, we waited just as long as groups of 2 without a reservation. The manager was kind to offer a drink on the house for our patience. Very nice! However, once taken to a table we were seated in the center of two busy isles. I noticed a booth that was empty, but assumed they would need that for a larger party & did not want to hold up waiting customers. After being seated we watched a couple be seated at the booth. I then inquired about the situation and was told that it was because they had a reservation. Really?!? After receiving our food we were delighted the fried chicken and biscuits and cheeseburger was delicious. I will be more specific w/ future reservations as too seating."

  • "We wanted to try a Voltaggio place and Family Meal had the most appetizing menu. The food was fun, slightly jazzed up versions of everyday food (my mom couldn't believe I ordered deviled eggs in a restauant.) Duck fat fried potatoes were absolutely addictive, everyting else was just good. I can't figure out why he has two whole walls of gorgeous windows facing the world's ugliest industrial park. I would eat there again but not if I didn't have some other reason to make the hour-plus drive from Baltimore to Frederick."

  • "Visited on a busy Sunday evening. Onion rings were crunchy and the dip was tasty if a bit thick for dipping. We split the wedge salad - greens were fresh but the dressing was light and the one piece of tomato looked lonely. Fried chicken was excellent - cooked just right and served hot. Burger was delicious - cooked to order on a fresh bun that was superb. Duck fat fries, while tasty, were a bit soggy - but still finished every one. When an upgrade with the burger, you have to ask for the sauces. Also question the $1 up charge for duck fat fries when you are paying $15 for a burger. But would still order it again (as I have done repeatedly). Still question the frumpy aprons on the wait staff. However, worth a visit and a return trip."

  • "Here is a new upscale "family style" meal that barely caters to the family. Food not so great! My husband and I saw this on the Washington Flyer magazine on separate business trips. As travelers we are , we always try foods that have rave reviews. We would drive our family of four miles and miles on weekends for good eats. This weekend was a good weekend weather to do so. We decided to go try the fried chicken. It was good but nothing better compared to the amish chicken that we take a 2 hr trip for in Lancaster once a month. Onion rings were over crusted over fried. Then there's the Servers chatting in the corner by the door. However presentation was commendable which I think is what we paid for. It shows that fame is not all that!"

  • "This was my second time eating at Family Meal, and I'll definitely be back again even though we live 45 mins away in Bethesda. Food was as delicious as our first time. I'm so happy I made a reservation on open table because even at 5:45pm when we arrive there were people waiting to get a table. I recommend the fried chicken and side of macaroni and cheese was good. I wish the cheese was sharp not mild but still very good. They give you a choice duck fat or I believe crisco to fry your French fries. my friend chose to try duck fat. I'm not a French Fries fan but they were terrific served with three different dipping sauces. If your in Frederick you must try this Resturant you will not be sorry. Looking forward to my next visit soon.."

  • "The food wasn't anything to brag about. And for two adults and one 3.5 year old, our bill was just shy of $100 with the tip. For that price, I expect food that has taste. I had the chicken. It was okay. The buttermilk biscuits it was paired with had little taste to them. My husband had the salmon. He said it was good. For sides, we had the brussel sprouts and Mac n cheese. The brussel sprouts were good, but cooked in so much oil that when you bit down, oil oozed out. Mac n cheese was good, but nothing to The restaurant does tend to get a little loud since it is all open and the floors are concrete Basically at this price point, I expect more than just good that is so so. I want to be WOWed. This wasn't it. I wouldn't go back."

  • "We were very disappointed in our experience at Family Meal. The food was good, but nothing exceptional, and very overpriced for what you get. I did not like the fact that vegetables were not included with your entree and were only available at an extra cost (to an already overpriced entree) and were only available in portions to share (at a higher cost.) With all of the other dining options in Frederick, we will not be going back to Family Meal."

  • "Been here before, but this time went for restaurant week. Food was mediocre, at best...even the staff admitted it was weak. Service was slow, despite empty restaurant and server was untrained an unknowledgeable. For a Volt restaurant, we expects more! Will not be going back. There's much better I Fredrick."

  • "This was the perfect place to meet family for a Sunday lunch. Knowing this is a hot spot we made a reservation. The decor and ambiance is very modern rustic. The large open windows give it a bright diner type feel. Our server was very friendly and attentive. They have some great beers on tap and my Dr. Pepper came in a bottle which was a first. Their menu has traditional family restaurant/diner dishes but with fancy twists. Three of us were pleased with our sandwiches and one person got an omelette that looked delicious. It was big and fluffy and I was a bit jealous. My french onion soup was some of the best I've had. Overall it was a great experience and I'd love to go back and try other dishes."

  • "This place is very kid-friendly - even close to 9 PM on a Saturday, they were running around and shouting. It's a boisterous place so it's OK - we had fun but it's name "Family Meal" is apt. The food is tasty but it's all heavy. The fried chicken and shrimp & grits were good. The duck fat fries tasted like regular fries - tasty enough, but... The meat loaf was disappointing. The fried Brussels sprouts were great. Guests liked the dessert and one had a boozy milkshake, which he said was more booze than shake (not necessarily a negative!) so overall a fun night and very tasty. I'd definitely go back."

  • "The pot pie biscuit and salmon were both wonderful dishes and the fish (cod) sandwich was so tasty that we skipped the bread and simply ate the fish with the amazing sauce. A wonderful lunch and definitely worth the restaurant week price. it would be worth it even without restaurant week costs!! We'll be back...thank you!!"

  • "Food is overpriced and nothing special. Wait staff was pushy. Decor was wannabe home style but shouted snobbery. The view of the strip mall and tire outlet were the most redeeming features."

  • "I have been to Family Meal many times, and it is always a good time! Their fried chicken is as good as it gets. All of the appetizers are delicious, as are the desserts. Do not miss the chicken pot pie appetizer and I would highly recommend their drinks. I would also never pass on a dessert. They are all so yummy! Have fun at the diner that gives new meaning to the word diner."

  • "As always, Chef Voltaggio delivers great food and great service. We started with the hoecakes with pimento cheese appetizer and loved it! My father got the house made pastrami sandwich which he could only finish half of because it was enormous. I got the shrimp po' boy sandwich with amazingly fresh lettuce and tomato. The shrimp were cooked perfectly!"

  • "Have been there once before- went to try the fired chicken others talk about. Went with Rest.Wk. Menu instead- the port loin had little flavor- the sauce was scant but so garlic I felt as if I ate it for 2 more days! Pappas bravas- ok. The real winner was the lentil soup- quite good. The place is okay, but after 2 visits, I'm not sure why all the hype. Perhaps just going to the bar is the best thing to do. The windows are nice, but with concrete floors, etc. make it look like a 50's cafeteria , which I don't find that appealing for a $100. meal for 2."
