Diner Reviews
  • "We were looking for a very casual restaurant after our day of walking around Frederick. We are fans of Volt and wanted to try this low key place. The service was good, it was warming outside than I thought so after the hostess sat us outside I requested for an inside table. No worries. The decor is clean lines and contemporary which I like, but at 5:00 when we got there the sun was extremely hot and I was dying. The blinds do nothing to block the sun so I toughed it out. There were 4 couples that came in after us and they also asked to move away from the window booths since it was so hot. I had the meatloaf, a real treat, VERY salty…my boyfriend had the halibut and said it was over cooked and also found it salty. Disappointed."

  • "Family Meal has a casual, open layout that matches it's menu. Comfort food staples and twists on American favorites plus more unique items like boozy milkshakes. I started out with a strong cocktail and ordered the chicken pot pie fritters and the tacos. The chicken pot pie fritters are a must-try! Rich but not heavy. The entrees (tacos and shrimp po boy) had a great presentation and you could tell the ingredients were fresh. However, for both, I felt that they were lacking in sauce, which made them seem as though they were lacking in flavor. I found myself searching around for one more ingredient like avocado to give it a little something extra and had to settle for salt to help bring out flavor. Service was awesome! Definitely Recommend!"

  • "We try to make lunch on Saturday or Sunday most weekends. The food is consistently spot on and the service is bright, enthusiastic and professional. We appreciate that the restaurant takes reservations as we drive up from Gaithersburg and we also appreciate that we are never disappointed!"

  • "As the restaurant's building was originally a car dealership, windows dominate two walls of the space. The sun filtering shades, installed on only one wall of windows, do a woefully inadequate job of blocking out early July's glare and heat. Our party of four was uncomfortable at both booth locations we tried. The selection of adult milkshakes looks yummy. We asked to have a virgin version of one, but our waiter told us we'd be charged full price as no emplyee had the ability to authorize such a change. Really?! In spite of these glitches, our party of four enjoyed a very good meal and will likely return, requesting an interior table or sitting at the bar."

  • "Yes, the fried chicken is very good, and the scallion biscuits, too. Pimento cheese on hoecakes is a great starter, tarted up with some pork. And there's pork (high-level bacon bits) on the deviled eggs too. This is comfort food that is cooked with care. One of the standouts is the reasonably priced cocktail menu - $8 for a crafted drink - no sour mix or jugs in sight. Service was sluggish, even after telling our server we were trying to make an event he did not take our order right away. But we will be back anyway for the food and the cool (converted Nissan dealership) space."

  • "What can you say about a restaurant that brings in a huge TV for the parking lot allowing everyone to gather to cheer on the US vs. Belgium game? Great. Sitting outside with drink in hand. Then moving inside for a great dinner. The only thing that was wrong was that the US lost. But our goalie won the day. So did Family Meal."

  • "The food was wonderful, everything was very tasty. The bar service was slightly slow, but our waitress did a great job of keeping us all happy."

  • "I have been at Family Meal several times for breakfast and always enjoyed it. We have moved away and came to visit friends and they said " where should we go for breakfast" and I recommended FM. DISAPPOINTED. What a weird menu. No more breakfast plates, hard to figure out, too many a la carte items that really drives up the price, coffee not as good, you have to have 3 eggs ( who needs 3 eggs?), the grits were cold most of the way through. Sorry. Will recommend but with reservaions."

  • "The food was outstanding. We were lucky we were seated outside where it was relatively quiet, and we could enjoy our meal. When we walked through the restaurant to use the restrooms, we were appalled by the noise."

  • "Second time here, brought the whole family now. Had some coloring material for the kids. My daughter had the pancakes, my son the waffles with whip cream. This time unlike last time the restaurant offered cups with lids, hopefully this will continue....The food was very good and it was quiet (830 on a Sun AM). The service was professional and polite. Again if the restaurant is crowded then it will be noisy due to the open construction and reflective materials. Recommended (certainly for Breakfast)."

  • "We really enjoy our dinners here even though we tend to order the same things. We just love the Duck Fat Fried Potatoes with dipping sauces and Fried Chicken with buttermilk biscuits. Great relaxed atmosphere, excellent service and delicious food."

  • "This was my first time at Family Meal. We had onion rings that were great, then fried chicken and collards. The generous serving of chicken was delicious and the collards had lots of flavor. Our only complaint was they were a little tough. Could have been cooked a little longer. We had a wonderful meal and will be back to try other selections."

  • "First, lots of free parking. Hostess greeted us and Justin seated us right away. Justin is the politest and most thorough waiter I have had in some time. Explained the menu and beverages. He always addressed us as sir and miss(how nice- usually I am called "ma'am- if called anything at all). I had a very tasty fried green tomato po-boy, The tomatoes were nicely fried- not greasy at all and the pimento cheese complemented them well. My friend had the huge pastrami sandwich- he said it was great - but so large- he took half home. We shared the fresh strawberry pie-I strongly advise you to try it when it is in season. We each made an 80 mile roundtrip to eat here-you should do the same!"

  • "Once a year before the summer gets crazy I like to take work colleagues out to lunch. Two of us drove over an hour to this much talked about restaurants. I chose the fish tacos. They were good but I was a little disappointed. I live in Mt Pleasant and can have as good if not better fish tacos 5 min from my apt. We had the strawberry pie for desert also good, no complaints. I was expecting something a little more earth shattering.... I did love the plates.."

  • "This was my first trip to Family Meal and I enjoyed the experience. The food was delicious, everyone in my group was delighted with their meals. The service was friendly and attentive. The ambiance was noisy, as it is one large room with an open kitchen, but I didn't mind."

  • "Food was great - service was great - drinks were great... The only downfall to this visit was when we ordered de-caf, it was COLD, the server took it and then brought us another cup - unfortunately, it was caffeinated - I didn't know until after finishing the coffee, and my nervous system went "BONKERS", I'm not supposed to have caffeine."

  • "We've been here several times before, just as a couple and a large group. The staff is more than accommodating. We changed our reservation a couple times the day of and ended up being late. They could have easily given away our table. We love this place and will go back but are gun shy to bring out of towners as we did this visit. My risotto was over salted another meal was cold. They fixed both and they were perfect. We orders shared plates which never came out and we ended up canceling. The manager was very apologetic and comped both meals and deserts. I can only chalk this up to an off nighttp:// as it sounded like there were issues in the kitchen that evening. We will totally go back but might not bring first timers."

  • "Recently we returned to Family Meal for a second time in one month. The food was as great as the first time & the service was consistently outstanding. Shrimp & Grits + Fried Chicken not to be missed. Brian Voltaggio got this right."

  • "My wife and I live in Silver Spring and had to make a trip to Frederick. We had eaten at Family Meal and remembered their moist (on the inside) and crispy (on the outside) fried chicken, fries, brussel sprouts, etc. we returned for an improvement on that wonderful memory. My wife had the chicken again and it was everything we had remembered it to be. I had the prime rib, which made me wonder how a piece of meat could actually melt in your mouth. Best prime rib I've ever eaten, hands down. The appetizer of crab meat sitting atop a lightly braised heart of romaine lettuce was the perfect light entre to an otherwise rich and decadent meal. Don't go there to diet; go there to forget all about the term caloric intake. It's worth the splurge!"

  • "Food was excellent, lots of variety and interesting choices without being too out there. Server was very friendly and informal but very attentive. Excellent cocktail list and plenty of good beers. Only real criticism (and most people probably don't find this problematic) but seriously half of the menu items have bacon in them, which I feel like is a bit of a crutch."

  • "Went to Family Meal with the kids based on the positive reviews elsewhere. It is not in the prettiest part of Frederick, MD. There is ample parking at the location. We went to eat on an early Friday morning and the restaurant was almost empty leading to almost non-existent noise levels. That being said, the decor is minimalist in nature and it is an open space so if crowded I can see this space becoming quite noisy when at capacity. Since we made a reservation the coloring "mats" with crayons were ready for the kids. The kid selections were reasonably priced with a reasonable portion. The adult portions were a bit on the smaller side. The service was polite and professional. Give it a try and see if you like it too!"

  • "Just like Mom used to make it, if Mom made fried chicken. All the food was super, shrimp & gritz, fried chicken, mac and cheese. Everything had a down home taste with a little twist. Don't forget to leave room for dessert!"

  • "Food was pretty good. Fish tacos were small. I was still starving, so I ate my kids left overs. Burger was average and mac and cheese was good but too salty. Fries were yummy. My friend enjoyed her fried green tomato sandwich. But the fish taco's were like an appetizer. Service was average."

  • "The food was outstanding with large portions. Wait staff impeccable. It is a casual setting and there were many families with children. The bar menu was awesome, we had Flying Dog Old Bay beer and Keys Tea, both of which were excellent. I had pork with cranberry beans, which was wonderful."

  • "My wife and I were with a friend and looking for a quick place to eat, and we saw this. The location is outside of the Downtown Frederick area, and was a bit peculiar, so we thought we would try it out. It was fantastic! The food was great, and the service was excellent, too! We very pleased with the experience, and will definitely go back. A real gem of a place, and a lot of fun!"

  • "This is my second time here. First time I came with my older son who is in grad school at Johns Hopkins, this time with my younger son visiting on break while in dental school. Both have been to restaurants all over the world. Both loved Family Meal. We ordered Caesar kale salad. Excellent! I had grilled wahoo. Excellent, but the most spectacular thing was the spinach soufflé! Wow!! He enjoyed the lobster risotto. The hostess and waitress were very kind and attentive!! They thought I left my wallet there and called me. It wasn't mine but very nice customer service!!! I'll be back!!!"

  • "Wanted to try Family Meal since we moved to the Frederick area. Big Top Chef fan, so I sought out Chef Brian Voltaggio's restaurants. Family Meal delivers! Very relaxed atmosphere, family friendly but nice for a date too. The food did not disappoint. I tried the popular Fried Chicken - so juicy and flavorful plus you get half a chicken and biscuits in a cute chicken themed dish! The side dishes are to share, so bring a group so you can try more things. I had the Brussel Sprouts- all I can say is forget what you think you know about Brussel Sprouts- try them. My husband had B.F.D. Breakfast is served all day. He was thrilled to get bacon and sausage with his eggs. Desserts are all made in house, get an adult milkshake."

  • "Family Meal is my go-to place for breakfast, lunch and dinner...when I want comfort food served in style. The Fried Chicken is my favorite thing to eat there and I get it every time I dine there for lunch or dinner. Today I also had the Strawberry Pie and it was....HEAVEN! Strawberry and Peanut Butter together in a pie....who knew it could be so good! Also tried the new Dead Rising beer from Flying Dog--excellent! If you go to Family Meal, ask for Webb to be your waiter. He's simply the nicest, most attentive waiter they have there! Extremely kind, but professional at every turn. Thanks to him, I tried the Strawberry Pie! He's a great reason to visit in addition to the food!"

  • "Noise level was intolerable for me and my wife. Many fellow diners were dressed sloppily; they looked like they had just come in from playing football. Food was excellent. Service was good but hurt by slow kitchen. Family Meal is not for seniors. I hope your new Family meal at OneLoudoun is quieter. "

  • "We have become regulars for Saturday lunch, mostly because the food is outstanding and fit for vegetarians like us, but increasingly because the service is fun and knowledgeable. We enjoy watching the line manager do his/her thing and especially appreciate your fair pricing for really quality food. Ambience is not our favorite part of this place - not gonna lie. Could be warmed up - we always wait for a booth - floating out in the middle of the restaurant at a deuce looks uncomfortable at best. Still, ambience or not, we are happy to make the trek up to Frederick on a regular basis these days."

  • "Loved this place. The fried chicken was marvelous, as were the duck fat fries, but the dish that took my breathe away was the rockfish in lobster rhubarb cream sauce--wow. Such a sophisticated dish for a diner. The desserts were also amazing (and we seldom eat dessert)."
