Diner Reviews
  • "From the minute I walked in the staff made me feel welcome. They were friendly and personable. My friend was running late due to traffic. The waitress was great, didn't make me feel rushed. I wanted a fun drink but no alcohol but there was nothing on the menu. My waitress said she could make me a mocktail and she did not disappoint, it was delicious. I had the grilled oyster appetizer. Blue Point oysters with roasted garlic hollandaise sauce, amazingly wonderful! For the main course I chose the steak frites with a red wine bearnaise sauce. Cooked to perfection and the potatoes were among the best I've ever had, crispy on the outside, tender in the inside. I cannot wait to go back!"

  • "The food is delicious and the staff is friendly! No complaints. Good southern food. I recommend the duck, the fried brie, and the fried green tomatoes."

  • "My wife and I have dined here about five times and we've always had a pleasant experience. Their list of beers on draught is always extensive and has a lot of variety (though it always seems heavy on IPAs but that's just me). On our last two visits we've had the fried brie for an appetizer and we'll definitely be getting on our next visit. This past visit I had the roasted duck breast and it was quite good. The ducked was perfectly cooked (and I asked for chef's choice, medium-rare), the fat was rendered properly and the meat was tasty. I especially enjoyed the rice with hazelnuts and butternut squash. If you're up for dessert try the apple cobbler, in fact bring your friends because it could feed four people."

  • "We have been going to this restaurant for years, its good food being the main reason. What a disappointment our last visit was! Visiting it again after a gap of about a year nothing was left of the reliably good menu. The food was really bad. It was advertizes by the waiter as southern (the chef is from Georgia) but this interpretation apparently meant everything (I mean everything) should be very, very sweet. We will not be going there again."

  • "Evening Star is our go to place to escape with out going anywhere...love to bring out of town guests here - great place to dine well and be able to hear who you are talking too Food is creative and simple and delicious"

  • "Service was quick, attentive but not intrusive. Menu seem limited. Had dined there before and recalled the menu being a bit larger. Maybe it was me? Salad was excellent. Had steak-frites main. Steak was cooked to order though I found the beef to be slightly tough."

  • "Friendly atmosphere, wonderful service, delicious selection of foods, and making reservations via OPEN TABLE so easy!"

  • "The fried brie was very good. The bread however, was not their strong suit, it was very bland. The main course was nothing special; my meat was slightly over-cooked, but not worth sending back. This joint is all about its hipster-aesthetic, which is great if that is your thing. It isn't ours."

  • "Evening Star is great-- everything I have ever ordered has been delicious. This time I got the beet risotto-- not only is it a beautiful dish, it tasted fantastic. The people are friendly, the wine is good, and the Front Porch outdoor option they have in the summer months is great too. Highly recommend."

  • "Small menu but everything on it is scrumptious. The place is cozy with a cool décor. We were a party of 6 and only had reservations for 4, but they rearranged their seating to fit in the extra 2 people. The wait staff was very attentive. For appetizer we shared the beet salad and pork with grits. For entrees, the pork chops with sweet potato hash was the favorite hands-down. We also enjoyed the salmon, shrimp with grits, and steak. The only complaint was that the steak came with a boatload of fries and some kind of vegetable would have been nice instead of so many fries. The other entrees had interesting accompaniments. It was cool that local produce was featured. This is our second visit and it was uniquely scrumptious then too."

  • "Nice ambiance, great biscuits and muffins, good wine, good grilled oysters and cauliflower soup. OK cod poulou, not very good southern fried chicken."

  • "The steak and frites were amazing & the wine list was quite lovely. I would go back, but maybe at an earlier time and not on Friday night. The place was slightly uncomfortable because it was packed, but all in all, it was a nice dining experience."

  • "Love the wine shop next door that holds the bottle for your waiter, love the hoppy IPAs at the bar, and always love the menu. Interesting and delicious food, never disappointing. Thanks!"

  • "Unless you are dining solo & won't be speaking to anyone, the Evening Star at dinner is just too loud. I live just blocks from the "Star" & have eaten here on & off for years. Yet every time I leave swearing I will never return. The food is generally good, the wine and beer lists are great, as is the service, but none of that matters all that much if you can't have a conversation. On Saturday night we came to celebrate a birthday. With only three at the table, we still had to lean in and practically scream just to have conversation. As a teacher I am used to speaking loudly when necessary, but this is extreme. I woke up Sunday morning with a sore throat and tense neck. For all it's charm, IMHO it's just not worth going to this restaurant."

  • "Evening star has a limited menu, which I like and is evidence of their commitment to their plan. Food was good, not great. I was hoping to get my socks knocked off but no such luck. Good meal, a bit pricey, neat decor. Nothing remarkable."

  • "We moved to Del Ray a couple of months ago and have been looking forward to trying Evening Star. We went for my wife's birthday, on a Sunday night. It was not crowded but there were plenty of people there. We started in the bar, where the beer selection was excellent, and my wife enjoyed the smoked old fashioned. The service was excellent. We started with pork belly which melted in your mouth and came with creamy, cheesy grits that were delicious. I had the Cod, and despite a lot of bold flavors in the broth, the cod really stood out. My wife had the duck, which was glazed and cooked perfectly with excellent dirty rice. The Mac and Cheese was creamy and delicious with a little kick. Finally, deep fried fluffernutter, says it all."

  • "We tried Evening Star Cafe two weeks ago just because we needed something new to do on a Saturday night. We were blown away by the cozy atmosphere and delicious bread. Then came our entrees! Everything was incredibly delicious. Before we'd even finished our dinner, we made a reservation for the next week. This time we tried dessert and two new entrees. Delicious. We love this place!"

  • "My husband took me to Evening Star Cafe for my birthday, and our collective gluttony nearly killed us. The restaurant specializes in Southern-style comfort food. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken (with collard greans, boiled peanuts, mashed potatoes, and red-eye gravy); it was crunchy, peppery perfection. My husband went with the salmon, dumplings, and turnips in an Old Bay sauce. I am not a fan of salmon (actually, I really, really dislike it), but I decided to give his a taste, as it was served lightly pan fried. I still can't count myself a salmon lover, but this was the best tasting salmon I've tried. After our meal, we went to the lounge above the restaurant and rounded out the night with bourbon. Stuffed but very happy!"

  • "This id a tiny restaurant with two lounges. The restaurant is very small and loud. The lounges are small too. Very hipster. Small locally sourced menu."

  • "I hadn't been to evening star for quite a few years and was happy to find that their food and service Is still first rate. Very similar vibe to Jackies in silver spring But even better ambience and food. Love this place!"

  • "we had a great time meeting a group there. Everybody enjoyed their dishes. I had the beet risotto and my boyfriend had the duck. We both enjoyed them. I would recommend it for a group, the staff was great and although it was noisy we could hear each other."

  • "My wife and I had our first date at this restaurant. It is great to see that over 4 years later, Evening Star has only gotten better. The food is fancy, but delicious, so even a simpleton like myseflt can enjoy it. The staff is incredibly friendly and very good at their job. It can get a bit crowded and a little bit loud, but with the cozy atmosphere and good company, you won't really notice. You can't help but love this little place. I look forward to reliving our first date here over and over again."

  • "The fixed menu and wine pairings were great. Service was excellent. Food only came when the prior course was done. Not pushy even with fully reserved and winter conditions. Definitely a find."

  • "This was our second trip to Evening Star, and as always, the food is fantastic! My wife had the Caesar salad and steak frites, and I went with a beef tartare appetizer and duck breast entree... OUTSTANDING. The portions are deceptively filling - they're normal-sized, but very flavorful and rich - so we took leftovers, but given more room in our stomachs and our plates would be empty. The restaurant seemed a fair bit noisier this time around, but it's nothing that will ruin your night. Totally worth checking out if you've never been, and totally worth going back to!"

  • "Dinner at Evening Star was very good. The Beet Salad was unique and very tasteful. My wife had the fried chicken - she really enjoyed it; very large portion. The Shrimp and Grits was the best I've had in Alexandria. Energetic crowd on Saturday night."

  • "Though I've heard about this place for many, many years, and live pretty nearby, this was the first time I've ever made it there. I now understand why it's such an Alexandria institution. The restaurant itself is quite cute inside; the service was friendly, knowledgeable, and reasonably attentive for this type of restaurant. The food was good, though not mind-blowing; it did seem as though it leaned a bit more towards heavier fare. Excellent wine options available and the waiter was helpful in picking something that paired with our menu choices. Dessert was delicious (talk about heavier fare... it was a deep-fried fluffer nutter a la mode!) and definitely worth the calorie splurge. Overall, I'd definitely consider going back."

  • "I have eaten here twice and I enjoyed myself both times. Both meals that I had were delicious. My friends who I dined with, on the other-hand, didn't have the same experience; they ordered the Risotto with beet greens and it had a grainy taste to it. So they asked the waiter about it to see if it was dirt or if the texture was supposed to be that way and the server talked to the chef. When she came back the server said that it was dirt from the beet greens because they buy organic. I was surprised that they didn't wash the greens well enough, but even more shocked that they didn't apologize or try to make it up in any way. They acted like it wasn't a problem that my friends ate their meal with dirt in it..."

  • "Had a nice experience at the Evening Star Cafe...we were a bit late for our reservation and the restaurant held a table for us. We also had friends joining us late, and they were able to get them a table next to us. Food was good and plentiful--nice wide selection. Overall, a great experience. The restaurant is very small and cannot accommodate large groups--also, a bit noisy, so not really good for a romantic setting."

  • "Have been to Evening Star Café several times before. Meals and service had always been outstanding. Food this time did not quite seem up to previous standards. Not bad, but did not blow me away as it has in the past. Sides with the cod were difficult to eat. Brussel sprouts left a bit to be desired. Perlou was great. Beer pairings just so-so. Will do my own pairings from now on."

  • "The meal was outstanding for Restaurant Week! We had a 7 pm reservation and I was very comfortable waiting in the bar drinking alone until the rest of the party came. The hostess told us to take our time and she would seat us when ready. She had reserved a very nice table by the window. we were celebrating a birthday, and the wait staff handled that very well. We all will return!."
