A word from Etoile Cuisine Et Bar
The owners of Étoile Cuisine et Bar, Chef Philippe Verpiand and Monica Bui, have created an inviting, warm European environment where both traditional and seasonal French food are front and center. "We want to dispel the notion that French food is heavy and pretentious," says the team, recently transplanted to Houston from San Diego, where they owned the famed Cavaillon Restaurant. Everything about Étoile Cuisine et Bar, from the inviting outside facade to the intriguing interior design to the high quality service, is meant to convey a feeling of truly being in France. With Chef Philippe's take on a seasonal menu using a French technique, it's a place where fine food lovers come together, not on a special occasion, but to enjoy every day.

Diner Reviews
  • "I was delighted to take my friend Laure from Paris, France to your restaurant yesterday for lunch. She ordered moules and was disappointed that the mussels were so big that she had to cut them with her knife. I think she wishes that they were more petite. We split the apple tart with the exquisite French vanilla ice cream and she was ecstatic! I had the crab and avocado salad and the cold asparagus soup and I really liked it. We did not have wine, but your wine list has vastly improved."

  • "Sunday brunch was excellent. Not too noisy, very good service, prices very reasonable for the quality. No problem for the person in the group with celiac disease who needed gluten-free meal."

  • "A lovely little French gem, we'll definitely be back. Had a great rose and ate escargot, foie gras, lobster risotto and sole amandine. All beautifully cooked and delicious."

  • "Been there several times. Took a friend for her birthday, her first visit. Called the day before the make sure the apple tartine comes out with a candle. Got there early just to remind them again to bring out dessert with candle. They forgot because it got busy! I wasn't happy about it because it kind of ruined the birthday celebration ambiance, but it is what it is. The manager did say they'll give me a free dessert on my next visit. Had the five course tasting menu and it was really good!"

  • "I love this place. The outdoor area is wonderful, but what keeps me coming back again and again is the seared foie gras. You don't find it like that very many places in the States, and it's my favorite!"

  • "The food, the service, the atmosphere are almost always perfect everytime I dine at this restaurant. This is one of the Uptown District's true gems of the restaurant world. I had the salmon dish 6/17/2014, expecting it to be rather simple and bland compared to many other dishes I've had there. Surprise! It was the most perfectly cooked, delectable piece of salmon I've ever had. Just the right amount of sauce....so delicious. I also appreciate the carefully selected French wine list they have at this restaurant. Keep up the good work Etoile!"

  • "First time, but thoroughly enjoyed it. Waiter was attentive, but not interruptive. We were able to dine and converse without continuous interruption but at the same time received super service. Food was exquisite as well. Just a great dining experience."

  • "second time here once for dinner and once for lunch! Lovely venue, great service and creative food"

  • "There was good and ok things about all of our meals. I ordered the crab and avocado starter. There wasn't much crab on it and the puree of avocado was ok. It was extremely lemony, so much so that I couldn't taste anything else. There was a tomato sauce under it that was to die for, but you couldn't taste it due to the overpowering lemon taste. Same thing on my friends lobster and risotto. Lobster great! She couldn't eat the risotto because it was extremely lemony tasting. The couscous under the snapper was superb, the snapper cooked to perfection, but the snapper itself was somewhat tasteless. For the price, not that outstanding, but good food with slightly pretentious wait staff."

  • "My friend and I meet for lunch once a month and are checking out the 'top 50 Houston restaurants'. So far Etoile has been the best. The food and service were fantastic. We will probably pay another few visits to this one before the 'top 50' list is exhausted!"

  • "Best damn restaurant in Houston. DiDi was an awesome server!"

  • "The restaurant was very crowded but we (2 people) were seated promptly. Starters: squash soup and goat cheese salad. Entrees: scallops and beef short ribs. All were superb, as were the desserts (actually, they were off scale). The portions were OK. Service was attentive but not intrusive. My only complaint: the tables were so close together that we could not comfortably hold a private conversation. While I understand that crowding tables together is the French style, this isn't France."

  • "Went with my wife for a nice romantic evening. We chose the chefs four-course selection and had a bottle of wine. While it was a $250 tab for just the two of us, the food was phenomenal!"

  • "Etoile Cuisine and bar exemplifies all the characteristics of European dining. Food is excellent and the wait staff are non-intrusive yet are right there without asking when you need something. Great anticipatory skills and never interrupting conversations at the table. We love this restaurant for its authenticity. We ate in the wine room for the first time. Very quiet."

  • "We had a great evening at Etoile that almost wasn't. My wife and I like to sit next to each other. When the restaurant staff called to confirm our reservation, I was warned that they would only have two tops for us to sit across from each other. I asked about a 4 top, and was told they might not have any available. I almost cancelled the reservation, but thankfuily we decided to try the restaurant anyway. When we arrived, they sat us in the wine room at a 4 top. It was much nicer than the main dining room as the dining room looked like it had very tight seating. The service was very good, and the food was unusual and excellent. My wife's mussels were amazing. My scallops were delicious. The apple tart for dessert was outstanding."

  • "The food is always outstanding here--that is the only way to describe it. It is beautifully plated, flavors are excellent, and wines, even by the glass, are available to pair to almost any dish. Our recent visit was marred only by a server with horrible halitosis, a chair at the banquette that was so deep that I could not sit comfortably in it (and I'm over 6'0") until I got a cushion for my back, and a valet that thinks his job is just to open the door for me instead of for my wife as well. Minor nit-picking, I know, but suggestions that hopefully that will help the restaurant."

  • "We came in for my husband's B-Day dinner. I added it to reservation form. Not looking for freebies, but hoping to get a candle or specially decorated dessert plate for him. Well, our table fell in between two service areas, I guess, and our waiter was overworked serving too many tables inside and outside, so we were mostly left to take care of ourselves, asking other waiters for things. Our request for another glass of wine was simply forgotten. They did make it up by offering free dessert wine and giving us two free desserts. Nice, but not the special night I was hoping for. Food was great, though and atmosphere is very nice too. May be don't come on a busy night and all will be fine. "

  • "I haved dined at Etoile now 7 times and the food and service are spectacular! The short ribs taste like silk and the baby cegetables and butternut squash puree that accompany it are perfect. The restaurant has two menus: one that is classic preprarations and one more "new". The chef excels at both. Desserts are also special here and I would highly recommend you try this establishment sooner than later! "

  • "While expectations were high from other reviews and personal referrals, we were nonetheless blown away with the food quality (preparation, presentation and flavor profiles) of everything ordered. Additionally, the service was highly professional and harkened of days long past. Unequivocally a great dining experience and example of a commitment to excellence that is rarely achieved or sustained in fine dining establishments today. Can't wait to return and hope to eventually sample every offering with a confidence based on this fabulous first experience."

  • "My most recent visit was the fifth in the last twelve months and, once again, the food and service were exceptional. This is not just a great Houston restaurant, this is a great World Class restaurant, and rivals the best in NOLA or NYC. It is now my favorite in Houston and my first choice when I am entertaining guests who I know have not been there. All who have joined me leave feeling the same as me. I travel extensively and this is as good as it gets and offered at a reasonable price. Etoile, don't change a thing. "

  • "My sweetheart and I had reconnected after 43 years and this was our first date since. This was our first date ever as adults. I had requested a quiet table where we could talk and sit close. When we arrived, we were escorted through the dining room and asked if being seated in their private wine dining room would be fine. There were about 10 tables in a very nice room. There was nobody else in the room and we said the room was perfect! We had excellent attentive service throughout our fantastic meal and, though the entire restaurant was full when we finished our meal and left, they did not seat ANYBODY in that private room. We felt very special that night and have to give the highest recommendation for this restaurant!!!"

  • "Kitchen forgot the French. Sole was snap peas and no almond or buttery flavor. Ribs just meat. And no muscles at 7 pm which was an appetizer that we looked forward to having. Not sure what happened. Was much better last Fall. "
