Diner Reviews
  • "Delicious Ethiopian food in a pretty setting full of small tables of lively people. Injera too light, not enough sour dough like pungency. Knowledgable and friendly , efficient wait staff. Too noisy if full. Perfect for lunch or early dinner. Thanks for great veggie plate , tibs of all sorts. "

  • "Although my experience with Ethiopian food is limited to San Francisco Bay Area, I find "Ethiopic" to be in line with the best Bay Area ones. It has a nice balance between flavor and exoticism, so one gets the idea of Ethiopian spices without being overwhelmed by them. "

  • "From the time we walked in the door until the moment we left our dining experience was absolutely fabulous. We we greeted at the door and please to know our reservation got us a window seat. The wait staff were very attentive and extrememly helpful while placing our order. The decor is very trendy and upscale. Another review stated Ethiopic delivered an upscale dining experience and I definately agree. Cannot wait to go back! I'd be remiss if I did not mention how delicious and flavorful the food is. Presentation was exceptional! Loved it!! Sheila M"

  • "A really wonderful Ethiopian restaurant just across the bridge on H Street. Really wonderful ethnic food served in traditional style. Eat with you hands. Order several items and share with your table. Servers were very patient and helpful. Clean and fresh. A true gem in DC."

  • "We like spicy foods, but this was REALLY spicy! The food was very good, but by the end of the meal I only tasted the spiciness. Server was great, however, and we had a really nice table by the windows."

  • "The food and service at Ethiopic were excellent as usual. My mom was visiting from a small town and I wanted to make sure to expose her to food she would never be able to try. Ethiopic is always good at providing suggestions for first timers. They warned us when they thought we were ordering too much food for three people (instead of going for the possibility of a bigger tip). The only downside is the volume. The restaurant is very loud but the wait staff is soft spoken, making it hard to hear them."

  • "This was the best Ethiopian I've had in the DC area in 20 years, combining the menu options, the food, the service, and most of all the ambiance."

  • "This is one of the best Ethiopian restaurants we have been too in the district. The food was very good and the server was super nice. It is tricky getting reservations, so try to book early in the week. We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "We called ahead that we'd be late - they held our table, right in the window seat (great view of the street). After leaving us water, the waitress was alittle late getting back to us but other than that, great service. Its not often that a server tells you that you're ordering TOO MUCH food but she was right. We ordered on sampler dish instead of 2 and still took food home. And it was delicious! The spicy and the mild. Beautiful interior in a hip location (H St. NE). Excellent food and superior service. I'll definitely be back."

  • "We have dined here about ten times so far and love the food. It is always super fresh and consistent. I now know what to order for our family based on our preferred dishes and it makes for an even better experience. Love the cooked lamb dishes and the raw Kitfo."

  • "Very friendly and knowledgeable wait staff. The food was delicious and came out quickly. Server recommendations were very helpful. Would definitely recommend to others!"

  • "I live in the neighborhood and enjoy dining here during the week. The vegetarian sampler platter always tastes flavorful and fresh. It is perfect to split with two people. The restaurant is dark, comfortable, good for groups or a date. I've always had good but not great service here, the staff is friendly and will leave you alone if that's what you prefer."

  • "I love Ethiopian food, and Ethiopic never disappoints. The service is attentive without being obsequious -- the waitress even made a recommendation that saved us money! The food is delicious and authentic - exactly like what I have eaten in Addis Ababa. It's also great for vegetarians - there are several good choices on the menu. This has become part of my regular restaurant repertoire!"

  • "It is rarely possible to get a last-minute table at Ethiopic because those who know and love authentic Ethiopian food reserve early and often. This has become one of the pillars of the H Street, NE renaissance because the always friendly but professional service is as outstanding and consistent as is the food."

  • "I discovered Ethiopian food many years ago. I introduced my now wife to the cuisine when we first met. Since then we have been ardent fans of all the different restaurants that have opened in the city and in the surrounding suburbs. Of all the Ethiopian food establishments where we have dined across the years, in our opinion, Ethiopic is the most evolved to US standards in terms of atmosphere, presentation of food and attention to service without giving up having their food taste authentic. During our most recent visit to the restaurant, we invited another couple to join us. They live not far from the restaurant, loved the food and plan to return themselves. This restaurant gets a lot of recognition and it is understandable why that is so."

  • "Food was great. Service was very good. Just bring a flashlight if you want to be able to read the menu. The lighting is really low, both overhead and the candle on the table."

  • "Ethiopic is my one of my favorite restaurants in DC. I have been going since December 2010 and they've only gotten better with ambiance and the look of the restaurant. I recommend the Vegetarian Sampler and Signature Tibs. The sweet red wine pairs well with the spice from the food. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, without being on top of the table too much. I highly recommend this place for both groups and dates, it can be romantic but also great for a communal style meal."

  • "A group of us from Cornell University were staying in DC for the weekend and were in search for a good restaurant. Our hotel concierge told us about this Ethiopian restaurant and that it was the best in the DC area. We went searching for good food and ambiance and we found it all here in Ethiopic. The restaurant brings in an ethnic flair with an updated sense of style. The owners and staff were all very friendly and even helped us by personally arranging a ride to the train station, because our time was very limited. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone near the DC area or even just stopping though. We'll be back soon."

  • "It's rare ethnic restaurants can combine great food, service, and ambiance. But this place those. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "Very good food -- at the same level as Dukem -- but with better ambiance and service. Also, huge portions. Great for a group."

  • "Food was good, definitely worth a try. I would recommend the veggie sampler. I would ask the waiter/waitress to more thoroughly describe the foods before you order. And get ready to eat with your hands!"

  • "Party of four, on a Wednesday night. Busy but not overwhelming. Ambience was very tasteful, with beautiful art and exceptional attention to detail. Service was extremely prompt and professional. The food was delicious, with a few dishes, 'Azifa' and 'Butcha,' that are not always found on standard Ethiopian menus. We also ordered the lamb tibs (impeccably seasoned and cooked to perfection) and one of the vegetarian combos with around seven dishes. Spicing/flavor was spot on, though not necessarily 'unique' among other restaurants. The one stand-out item on the vegetarian combo was the 'Fasolia' (spelling?), which is the string bean and carrot dish. It was deliciously caramelized and left us all wanting more. Overall a superb experience."

  • "There is an art to Ethiopian food and Ethiopic is practicing it! Although I love the homestyle Ethiopian atmosphere and cooking in other local Ethiopian restaurants, this one is special. The food is light and not overly rich and the spices delicate and fragrant. If you like Ethiopian cooking you should give it a try. It has a good reasonably priced wine list, good beer selection and a warmly elegant atmosphere."

  • "The Ethiopic Signature Kitfo was the best version of the dish I have ever had. I live within walking distance of nine Ethiopian restaurants in Silver Spring but Ethiopic was worth the trip downtown."

  • "the food was excellent. they do not use traditional injera unless you askfor it in advance... so it is not gluten-free, but it can be. ask."

  • "The ambiance is great, the wines were excellent but the food was just ok. I wonder if it was an off day for the chef because the beet salad was too spicy, the veggie platter was blah and the doro wat flunked, with overcooked meat and separating, too oily gravy The food underwhelmed us. You can find so much better food in the neighborhood Ethiopian joint. It really was not worth the cost. But the restaurant was just beautiful and the service was lovely!"

  • "This was my first time trying Ethiopian food - and they really made my happy! They explained what everything was to me, told me how they made anything and even let me try some samples of popular dishes. I would STRONGLY recommend anyone in the area to stop by."

  • "The stout we ordered turns out to be Amber... it said "amber" right on the bottle. Service was slow, and poor. The waitress knocked over and broke a beer glass that drenched my friend...for this I would expect URGENT response and activity to help her be dry and glass-free. Response was slow, and they comped her wine, but for something like that I would expect their meal to be comped. In the past, I've enjoyed this place, but since there is so much wonderful ethiopian food in the city, I'd pass due to the service."

  • "Our party enjoyed the 7 vegetable sampler and the lamb tibs which was a perfect amount for four people. The food had a wonderful balance of delicious flavors and just enough spice/heat to enhance the flavors, while not overpowering the palate. The server was very friendly, helpful with suggestions and explanations of the food that was bright out and quick to replenish the bread throughout the meal. Great, flavorful food and solid service - also at very reasonable prices."

  • "I had expected the food to be better considering the reviews the place has gotten. It was also expensive for the quality of food."

  • "We love getting the sampler which has a number of different kinds of meats and sauces that are all good. Also they recommended their Lamb Tibs and that is a new favorite of ours (less spicy if you're looking for that). The waitress was very friendly too."

  • "I took my father to Ethiopic while he was in town, and we loved it (he is actually insisting on another visit to town so that we can go back). The wait staff was very friendly, and the main dish we ordered (the seven-dish vegetarian sampler) was delicious. We ordered the baklava for dessert, which was butterier and less sweet than regular baklava (I though this was a good thing)."

  • "Ethiopic is a really enjoyable experience. They offer a bit more Americanized experience than many Ethiopian restaurants I've been to, paired with better food. Rather than an over-arching hot sameness that plagues other Ethiopian restaurants, the dishes have very distinct flavors and textures. While I don't eat meat, my dining companions both far preferred the lamb dish suggested by our waitress to the chicken dish they'd ordered."

  • "Excellent Ethiopian dishes in a welcoming and warm atmosphere. Fine beer list, with outstanding Ethiopian choices, as well as domestic small labels and some other imports. Fairly priced wine list, also including a handful of Ethiopian wines (which I must confess not having tried). Strongly and warmly recommended."
