A word from Ethiopian Diamond
Dining in Ethiopia is characterized by the ritual breaking of injera and eating from the same plate, signifying the bonds of loyalty and friendship.

Injera, the traditional Ethiopian bread, is part of every entree. It is pancake-like bread on which the various stew dishes are served. The traditional way of eating it is with your fingers, which in itself is a delicate art. A bite sized piece of the injera is broken off to pick up a mouth full of the chosen dish.

Ethiopian dishes are characterized by the variety of spices from which they get their exotic taste. Watt is a stew that comes in the form of beef, lamb, chicken, fish and vegetables. These range from spicy watt to very mild. The mildly seasoned watt is called Alicha.

Ethiopian Diamond Restaurant all dishes are free from artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and artificial preservatives. We use vegetable oil in all vegetarian dishes, No butter, no eggs, no milk, no honey.

Diner Reviews
  • "My biggest complaint was that it took 15 min get someone's attention so that I could pay for the bill! I thought they were prepping to sing happy birthday to my sister who I treated to dinner, but I guess they were just being inattentive on a not-so-busy-looking Thursday night. I also found it a bit ridiculous that I had to pay for an entree for a six and three year old when they had mere nibbles all night while my sister ate an entree for two and theirs. I guess people in the past were abusing that entree for two but come on! Good"

  • "Took 1.5 hours to order and get our food. Didn't get the order right and even slower at correcting mistake. Seems like there are only 1-2 servers who can approve/take orders and other people were only bus boys. Portions were small and good was microwaved. Took us 3 hours for dinner from entry to exit. Never going again."

  • "The food was excellent, but the service was slow. The first time I ate there was also on a Saturday night and the service was much better."

  • "We brought our wedding guests here after we married at the Cultural Center. It was a chance since many of our guests had never had Ethiopian before but the food was a hit and everything was delicious. As we were finishing our meal the owner gave us a beautiful wrap to celebrate our wedding! It was a great experience and delicious food."

  • "I've been to ED before - it's a fine restaurant that serves tasty, exotic food at reasonable prices, and with attentive and ready service - but this visit was less enjoyable due to the overly loud jazz band. The music was good, just way too loud. It was concert-level loud. I had to shout to be heard by people sitting several feet away. Turn down the music, man! I'm trying to dine!"

  • "Had a great time for my birthday here. One of the most attractive qualities of this type of cuisine is the gluten free option they provide. Everything was delicious. The service was a bit slow, as the restaurant was completely packed, but everything we ate was fantastic!"

  • "The atmosphere was pleasant, and the food was excellent. The service, however, was lacking. We waited longer than we should've for our server to finally visit our table. We only saw him when he took our order, brought our drinks to us, and then our check. Guests at other tables seemed to have better servers, so I can't say service was bad throughout the entire restaurant. It was just our guy. The food was so good that there's no doubt we'll be back."

  • "I've been a fan of Ethiopian food for many years. This is the best Ethiopian I've had in Chicago. The food is full of flavor and just enough spice. Try one of the samplers, which offers meat and vegetables."

  • "A favorite for food and friendly warm and welcoming staff...when the whole fam ily is in town it is our go to spot . We let the staff order for us...they know how to please. My sis is a vegan and always orders the 100 percent teff with vegan assortment...delicious! It's like going to long lost relatives to eat great food and foster camaraderie Ethiopian. Cuisine and .dining format is unique, delicious and always a great time."

  • "I had a great meal, though I was surprised to find they dilute theteff in their ingiri with regular flour. This means you have to special order gluten free ingiri. As someone who learned to love Ethiooean food from a woman who never used gluten flours in her bread, this came as a surprise. The service was not super attentive despite the fact that we arrived before the crowd, but when the food finally came out it all seemed worthwhile."

  • "It has been years since going to an Ethiopian restaurant. We decided to try Ethiopian Diamond for my birthday. The food is outstanding and the unique African beer and wine list was great. The service is friendly but a bit hesitant at times. You have to speak up and ask for help with the menu if you are unfamiliar with this type of cuisine. They seemed to assume that everyone there was a regular. But once we spoke up, they were very accommodating. I love the mystique and freshness of Ethiopian cuisine. This place is the real deal. Great experience."

  • "We love this place. Great food especially the Kitfo. We tried the pumpkin stew which is now one of our favorite veggie along with collard greens and lentils. this time we brought along our 11 year old nephew and he loved eating with his hands. best Ethiopian the city and worth a try"

  • "We have been going to Ethiopian diamond at least once a year for over 10 years, and the food is always excellent. This time we were a group of 11. The ambiance has improved over the years. Service is consistent. This time there was a large group of about 70 people in front of us that did not make a reservation, therefore the food took over an hour to arrive. I was disappointed that the only thing they offer was a few apologies for the delay. I would have expected that they will bring an appetizer or free drinks. Anyway, I do not think that any restaurant would be able to handle a large group like that without a delay. I think they did quite well given the condition. Thanks"

  • "In looking over the menu, we were shocked to read the statement that a $5.00 charge would be imposed if people shared an order, a confusing policy. Eventually someone took our order and we waited about 30 minutes for food to arrive. We ordered 2 platters (for 2 people each) and 2 individual menu entres. When the food finally arrived, the two individual entres were missing. We were told that the individual entre items were included with the two platters, including a chicken dish put on the vegetarian platter; it takes a lot of cheek to charge $14.00 for a dollop of food (and I am not into big portion sizes). Very loud music playing as well. Nerve wracking evening and we will never return!"

  • "Being new to the Chicago area, we've sought out fun new places and cuisines to try. Ethiopian Diamond had everything we wanted and more--not only a cuisine that was new to us, but food that was cooked beautifully. We followed our server's suggestion and started with two kinds of sambusa, stuffed triangles of pastry stuffed with spinach and potato & carrot. They were delicious--the spinach was the best--and served with a sweet & sour kind of sauce on the side. We followed with a Tour of Ethiopia for two--two entrees and two sides, all served on the spongy injera bread native to Ethiopia. You eat with your fingers, using the injera to scoop bits of food and sop up the exotic sauces. Definitely worth a try--we'll be back!"

  • "The staff at Ethioopean Diamond is always helpful, whether it's your first time or a return visit. They'll make suggestions and ask for preferences to ensure you are served an authentic Ethiopean meal you won't be disappointed in. They've expanded and gone through a mini makeover, and I don't know if that's why service was a little slow when we first sat down or not. After our order was in, things went more smoothly. We always order a couple tours and a bottle of wine. Would love to try an Ethiopean beer sometime, too. I enjoy the vegetarian menu items most, even though I'm not a vegetarian. Although, we did have lamb on our tour and it was excellent. There's always groups and couples dining here. Children, too. A good mix."

  • "This is the second time I have chosen Ethiopian Diamond when seeking a dining experience that will accommodate a large group, including people with various food requirements [seafood allergies, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.]. Ethiopian Diamond was able to provide a lovely meal for everyone without any difficulties or unnecessary fuss."

  • "We were a group of four and ordered 4 meat dishes and 3 veggie dishes because we were starving! The platter looked beautiful when it arrived and each of the dishes was perfectly prepared and tasty. Our water glasses were refilled without request and clean napkins appeared in a most timely way. We will be back again and again!"

  • "We had a great meal as usual at Ethiopian Diamond. They have really expanded the restaurant, it is very different than it used to be. They also raised their prices and changed their menu recently."

  • "Servers were attentive and playful. We ordered various Taste of Ethiopia platters. All were delicious. I particularly liked the Yemisir Watt and Yesiga Alicha. One person in our party is gluten-free, and they were able to accommodate with a gf injera. Honey wine was really good despite it's unusually bright color. I had never had Ethiopian before, but everyone I talked to said this is the best place in the city. I would definitely go back and try other dishes as well as recommend to others."

  • "Ethiopian Diamond has an extensive menu, so it is great for groups and for those who have never tried Ethiopian food. We always get a vegetarian sample and additional entrees. My husband, daughters, and I love the sampler. It is a great way to try several different dishes. If you would like to go with children and unsure what to order, my super picky 8 year old (now less picky 11 year old) started with Doro Tibs (Chicken), Kik Alicha (yellow split peas), and Dinich Alicha (potatoes and carrots)."

  • "Eating Ethiopian-style is always fun for us, and this was no exception. As is typical, the meal was a good value and the ability to try a variety of dishes, even in a party of two, is a big plus. Unfortunately, what should be the highlights of the meal, the meat dishes, were distinctly dry and overcooked. Every thing else was quite good."

  • "Amazing flavors, be bold and adventurous at Ethiopian Diamond! One entree per person will leave you more than full."

  • "Food is nice, there is tha quality and quantity for a good dining. However, the service was not very friendly, people seem not happy with their job. I also think that making us pay for a supplement of bread is really greedy. Finally, the bad point is that the restaurant refuses more than 2 credit cards. That's unacceptable, and for a group of 5 that creates a complicated and uncomfortable situation."
    Dined on 5/25/2013
  • "Always a wonderful experience. Servers were very helpful in making suggestions when asked. Food and wine was excellent. We love the decor and fabulous service."
