The Escabeche Dining room at the Prince of Wales in Niagara on the Lake is a gem. The food, service and ambiance were all excellent. The wine lis is extensive but very expensive. You can however buy wine by the glass, either 5 oz or 9 oz.

Jack, our wait person, was outstanding. He was personable, pleasant and helpful. Bill served a complimentary appetizer and was also very pleasant and available. However, the food prices were a bit above the ordinary. For a restaurant of this caliber I would suggest adding a couple small green salad selections. and also offering black napkins when one is wearing dark clothing. We drove from the Bloomfield Hills, MI area where there are several outstanding restaurants however, we really liked being greeted by the doorman, and the atmosphere was unique and elegant. thank you.

Presentation lacking. Carrot strata uncooked in the middle, no seasoning on the veal. We ordered a bottle of wine ($75). The server couldn't get the cork out. He went away to get another bottle. Returned some time later with the same bottle and said they were able to get the cork out. The cork was presented to us totally chewed up and destroyed. Total damage with tip: $220.00 for two people. We could have eaten better from local cafes for much less money. We will not return again - ever! How many diamonds does this restaurant have?. Yuk

The evening was a special dinner with my wife and I and good friend prior to a attending a Shaw Festival play. Service was prompt and staff were attentive and professional. The menu was carefully explained along with wine and other meal suggestions. Our choices were prepared as requested, pleasantly presented and more importantly, delicious. The staff were friendly and very attentive but not overbearing which allowed us to experience a relaxing meal. An excellent experience deserving a return visit.

Our waiter was not knowledgeable about the menu. When I asked him what a tostada was he said he didn't know. We asked if it was like a fajita and he nodded and said yes yes. I saw it served to another diner and it was nothing like a fajita! Our lunch also took a very long time to be served. Other diners in the section next to ours (different server) were seated after us, served, finished dining and paid the bill and left the restaurant before our lunch even hit the table. I can see that happening when the item takes a while to prepare but we only ordered the pasta. We will not be returning.

Alec and Fred were great, gave us the service we wanted! The food was good, but my husbands strip had to much gristle and he choked on it. Mine was very good and would order it again. I do wish they would have waited to move the furniture to steam the floors until after the restaurant closed. It was our anniversary and this act did nothing for romance. The table was set beautifully and the location could not have been better. Alec and Fred made the occasion special and they were very much appreciated! Also, I don't recall the name, but the chief served an horderves before our meal that was wonderful!! Please give him our complements!

Dined before theater on a Friday night. Greeting was friendly and professional; server Dan was helpful and offered good advice, especially on selecting an appropriate Ontario wine. The setting at the Prince of Wales hotel is magnificent, and the glassed-in area offered a nice vantage point for watching the activity in the street. A beautiful start to the evening.

The food was quite good and the service was good, with one exception. We were asked to keep a used fork, which you never expect from a class restaurant. I also noted that the windows were very dirty, especially the ones over the glassed-in front room. They had not been washed in several months! It makes one wonder about the overall cleanliness of the facility. Goodness only knows they charge enough for everything, so that they could give out clean forks and wash the windows fairly often. There are enough very good places to eat in town, so it will be a while before I return. It was our first time and we were disappointed!

Escabeche is one of Niagara-on-the-Lake's most elegant places to dine with very good food and service, but with correspondingly high prices. Our dinners were very good; my only complaint is that the foie gras portion, while delicious and velvety smooth, was quite small. A nice experience.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

From its website: "Escabèche is the perfect restaurant for diners with discerning palates and an appreciation for opulence." Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. We had lunch there; simply put, it tasted like fast food. The service started off poorly too; however, our server did recover and, when we complained about the food, she offered to give my wife something else. Since we were so disappointed, we didn't want anything else so they did take off my wife's meal, which she hardly touched, off the bill. Perhaps dinners - with the executive chef - are good. Unfortunately, based on the lunch we had, we will not be returning to try.

I selected the Escabeche Restaurant to introduce my granddaughter to the experience of fine dining on her birthday. I had eaten there before, and found the whole package: food, service, and ambience, to be outstanding. My granddaughter was thrilled with her food, with the patient and informative wait staff, and with the atmosphere, which hinted at opulent dining of days gone by. We were able to converse in normal tones, eat at our leisure, and celebrate her birthday in the way I had intended. Nick, our waiter, was never more than a nod away, and never intruded. The squid ink tagliatelle was exquisite, and my granddaughter's steak was perfect. On the whole a perfect evening.

What a great lunch experience! We found the portions to be quite large. My wife and I started with a Charcuterie Board. We enjoyed a fantastic 2011 Jackson Triggs Grand Reserve Chardonnay that was served at the precise temperature for enjoyment. Lunch entrees were fish and chips and a Thai chicken wrap. There was no room for dessert! Juan Carlos was our server and he was great; both knowledgeable and entertaining. We thought that he was just the type of server someone would want when on vacation. TIP: Parking is hard to find, but, if you have a dining reservation at Escabeche, you can valet your vehicle at the hotel FOR FREE! No stress and the car was back in less then five minutes after the request.

I booked the Prince of Wales hotel for a birthday gift for my husband, after having problems initially with booking a package with Prince of Wales, the food made up for our issues. The suggested 2011 Cabernet wine from Chateau des Charmes was just right for our meals. The Roasted white onion soup and cauliflower bisque were spectacular! For our second course, we had the Potatoe gnocchi the beef tenderloin. It was also great! We finished the meal off with their creme brûlée and their house made ice-cream. Although I didn't enjoy the ice cream much, I really enjoyed their creme brûlée and the detail put into it. I would definitely come back again for this fantastic meal.

For the prices it charges, Escabeche should do better. The food is good to very good but some distance from outstanding. The serving staff is cheerful but under-trained. The crowd watching the hockey game in the nearby bar was loud and occasionally distracting. The space is a very agreeable one, but I remember enjoying it more when I was last here a couple of years ago.
