A word from Erna's Elderberry House
"I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Château du Sureau. They seem to sum up the exquisite experience of dining at Erna's Elderberry House and the adjacent Château, where the vast culinary talents of Executive Chef Gunnar Thompson now reign supreme.

The restaurant, with its European country-estate atmosphere, is divided into three lovely dining areas, each adorned with antique French provincial furnishings, magnificent tapestries and original oil paintings. A stately terrace with a commanding view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains adds to the fabulous ambiance.

Unfortunately, the restaurant accepted our reservation for 7:00 but never told us that our only option would be to join a wine dinner already in progress, sitting at communal tables, prix fixe with wines not of our choosing. This was not of interest to us and we would not have driven the considerable distance from Yosemite if we were not anticipating a more sophisticated dinner than available in Yosemite, a greater choice of wines, and a more formal setting. Their event for the evening was never mentioned in their confirmation emails or phone calls. This was very disappointing and inexplicable.

One of the best dinning experiences we have ever had! Service was the utmost, beyond expectations! Food was exceptional in variety on your plate and presentation exquisite! Desert on patio was a chocolate delight! The anniversary plate was an extra bonus! The only surprise beyond the bill ( but worth the $) was the $5 charge for additional sauce for the main dish! Erna's was recommended to us by some neighbors back in MD. A little over an hours drove from El Portal, we were in Yosmite, it was worth every twist and corner on the windy roads. Food was spectacular and the wine pairing did not disappoint. Erna was there to greet and check in with all her guests. Would highly recommend Erna's to anyone looking for a special occasion restaurant or some place extraordinary.

Not for the faint of heart, bring pile of cash or deep pocket. A simple dinner meal for one person can set you back $150 easily. A cheap red wine serving costed $25. However , would go back again for the ambient.

Thought the place was wonderful, Erna came out and spoke with us and every other guest for that matter. The head chef also came out a bit later and talked with us a bit, both seem very nice. Food was excellent ( we had the pre fixe menu). Be prepared to spend some time there as our dinner lasted about 3 hrs.

I was nervous about our reservation for six because of the cost and fixed menu, unknown until the day of dining. What if one of us didn't like the menu? Would there be enough food on those artfully prepared plates? I'm pleased to say that our evening was delightful. The chef suggested an alternate starter course when one of our group balked at seared Ahi tuna, offering a fully cooked artic char in miso broth instead, which we all ordered. One of us was allergic to shellfish, so the chef provided an alternative to scallops for her. And for the person who preferred no mushrooms, none were in sight. And yes, we had plenty of food, thanks to an extra course and several surprise treats. Lastly, the service was impeccable! Outstanding!

I had been wanting to dine at the Elderberry house for 20 years. I had high expectations, and I was not disappointed. The service was beyond excellent, I would have given more than 5 stars if allowable! The food was exceptional....not one flaw. The restaurant was beautiful, but not stuffy or pretentious.... absolutely loved the entire experience! Only one note, be prepared to spend 4 hours for the full course meal. This dining experience was meant to be savored, not rushed.

I'd not eaten at The Elderberry House for about 15 years and only for lunch in the past. While the food quality was excellent and the service superb, my date wished he'd had more than two pieces of the lamb, each the size of his thumbs together, for the $108 fixed dinner price. The meal took over 3 hours even though each course was eaten in less than 5 minutes. We opted out of the wine with each course that was an additional cost of $73 and the cheese course that was $18. The bill with tip was $273 making this the most expensive meal I'd ever had.
