A word from Erna's Elderberry House
"I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Château du Sureau. They seem to sum up the exquisite experience of dining at Erna's Elderberry House and the adjacent Château, where the vast culinary talents of Executive Chef Gunnar Thompson now reign supreme.

The restaurant, with its European country-estate atmosphere, is divided into three lovely dining areas, each adorned with antique French provincial furnishings, magnificent tapestries and original oil paintings. A stately terrace with a commanding view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains adds to the fabulous ambiance.

  • "Not a long jaunt up the hill from Fresno, but the perfect once-in-a-lifetime (or with any luck, more than once) spot to celebrate a special occasion with a special someone."

  • "Unbelievable food and service. Five delicious courses of exquisitely prepared food. Each course is presented simultaneously by servers, one for each person at the table. The menu changes daily and, in fact, may vary slightly from that posted on the website. We were expecting vennison, but instead, had lamb for the meat course. The accompaniments with each dish are a culinary delight, adding to both the presentation and taste. Our party of four shared one wine pairing, and found it both interesting and a good value. Erna's has an extensive wine list with many choices as well as many wines by the glass. We chose to bring our own well-aged red wine and paid a $30 corkage. Overall, a very satisfying experience for what we paid."

  • "Erna has created an unique place with outstanding food, service and attention to details. The fixed menu with wine pairing is very well thought out across a broad range of ingredients, flavors and colors. Even vegetarian will be able to adapt their fixed menu as they will substitute some of the dishes as needed (impressive!). Obviously the price is matching this level of culinary experience but it is not extreme like a 3 stars restaurant in Paris like the Grand Vefour etc..."

  • "Eating at Erna's Elderberry House was like dining formally at a castle, from the moment you stepped from your car to the moment you stepped back in. The ambience was amazing, the service impeccable, the food divine. I've eaten here twice, the second time driving four hours out of my way just for the restaurant (it's that good!) Both times I had my three children in tow, and while I wouldn't call the restaurant "family friendly" (no crayons on the table) everyone from the head chef down worked to accommodate my children and give them a pleasant dining experience. Be warned if you are bringing the kids along; this is not a quick in-and-out place. Be prepared to keep them quiet for at least 2-3 hours."

The ambiance was so relaxing & cozy. The service is beyond excellent. We felt like royalty throughout the entire dinner. It was the best birthday dinner ever!"

  • "everything, by that I mean EVERYTHING, at Erna's Elderberry House is so carefully designed and taken care of! one cannot find a place, or a single food item, where care and thought are less given. the food are superb, from beginning to finish. the first course (note this restaurant have a set menu which changes from day to day, with very carefully chosen wine pairing) was stunning, it was black cod with garlic gnocchi, broccoli, sweet potato. everything in it was so perfected cooked. everything follows were no less impressive. even the cookies given to us as good wishes are so good!"

  • "My husband and I went for our 13 year wedding anniversary. This place is superb, excellent, outstanding. Every part of the DINING EXPERIENCE was wonderful. Roses hanging from the ceiling, French/European Décor, Romantic ambiance. Service was impeccable. Quiet and well paced. If you are looking for a quick bite, this is not the place for it. This is a true dining experience. Our meal lasted 3.5 hours. It is a pre fix menu. You have to be open to FLAVOR!!! It was a 7 course meal, with 2 additional chef surprises. Plus, I came out with some thumbprint cookies that were excellent and buttery and purchased some lavender honey made by the chef. There is so much with the variety of food and the flavors. You truly have to experience this!"

  • "First discovered The Elderberry House 17 years ago and it has never disappointed. Fabulous food, a great wine list and superb service. A great meal for special occasions or any time you really want to treat your guy or gal to an awesome experience. I only wish they were closer to us.... Absolutely love it here and if you can be a guest at the Chateau and have dinner, you cannot do better than that! Throw in a stay at the spa and it simply does not get better than that. Erna always makes it feel like coming home..."

  • "We had a terrific visit. The meal was terrific with the exception that the duck was a little salty. When we entered we immediately noticed the excessive smoke smell from the fireplace, not overwhelming but very noticeable. We noticed it on our prior visit as well. Beyond that my bride is still talking about the dinner."

  • "The perfect gift for a dear friend's 70th birthday......Our experience combined two of our favorite things, ART & FOOD. Every plate was a "Paining in the round (or square)". Every bite was savored with a sigh. Our servers were accomodating and friendly. It was an outstanding evening which I will look forward to when I turn 70. Thank you all for making our visit so special."

  • "Erna's is a nice restaurant with an extremely professional and friendly staff. We had brunch and Erna's provided a very good quality and presentation which you would expect from a restaurant positioning itself among the high end. However, at $58, the Table d'hôte brunch menu is probably about 20% overpriced for what you get compared to comparable restaurant."

  • "This is a very charming place to visit and stay in. The only problem is that it is far away from most cosmopolitan areas and requires a 4 hour drive from LA to get there. The town is very blue color so there is no other place to visit. Of course Yosemite is a stone away. The food is great and is presented very artfully. The staff are very well trained. Ms Erna herself show up and of course she is a legend and a character. The fact that the place has survived all these years is a credit to her innovation and management skills. If you are in the neighborhood, you must not miss an opportunity to visit there."

  • "Nothing more to say! We arrived early and were greeted and seated promptly. It was one of our top dining experiences to date, including some very fine dining in Paris and NYC. If your near Oakhurst and take pleasure in fine food paired with fine (mostly European) wine, make a reservation and prepare to be WOWed! We enjoyed the four course menu with one wine pairing split between the two of us, which was perfect."

  • "Thirty miles or more north of Fresno, Erna's is worth the trip. We've known about Erna's since it first opened, but this was our first time, which will hasten the next visit--Sunday brunch. Every detail in dining was attended to and the overall experience was exceptional."

  • "Food still outstanding but service lacking. We make a special trip to the Sierra's to include the restaurant. We as usual ordered from the price-fixed menu, with requested substitutions for the vegetarians in the group and those with allergies. However, two different courses had to be returned. Apparently, the service did not relay the appropriate information to the chef. The chef responded with amazing alternatives both times, but each occasion added another 20 min. to dinner. All courses except the rather bland salad was outstanding. We understand there has been recent changes in service personnel....Hopefully that aspect will improve.. we will go back...still love the restaurant, an exceptional restaurant."

  • "Our dinner menu was very well organized and prepared except for the fish course. Wine parings were too structured and didn't offer choices which would have made for a more pleasurable experience. Service was outstanding. Ambiance was perfect. Not quite the French Laundry but worth a return visit."

  • "My wife and I came up for our 35th wedding anniversary. The staff treated us like royalty and the small personalized touches that the staff, chef and even Erna herself gave to us made it an evening we will not soon forget. Thank you to everyone for the great evening and the great dining experience."

  • "I didn't realize Erna's had a fixed prixe menu, but they offered us as many of the courses as we wanted. Each course was exceptional as was the wine pairing. The sommalier let us taste each wine before pouring, and asked what size pour we wanted. All in all, exceptional dining and service."

  • "My three friends and I ended our weekend trip to Yosemite with a wonderful Sunday brunch at Erna's Elderberry House. Everything exceeded our expectations from the food to the ambiance. The service was attentive, cordial, and prompt. The entree of beef was so tender that it hardly needed a knife. There is no doubt that we will return to Erna's."

  • "Erna's is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. From the moment you walk in, someone is warmly welcoming you and seeing to your every desire. The chef was so accommodating of my fish allergy by asking me what he could substitute, I requested chicken and it was the best I have ever eaten. The five courses were really seven and all tasted Devine. I would recommend Erna's Elderberry House to even the most discriminating food critic. Make sure you stay at the Chateau while there!"

  • "I have traveled extensively in the US, Europe and the South Pacific, and I usually seek out good restaurants when on the road. Erna's would compare with the best experiences I've had anywhere. The place is lovely. The wait staff was well trained. There are little personal touches, such as your name printed on the menu, that contribute to your feeling special. The meal is set menu, prix fixe, at $95 pp, with an optional wine pairing with each course at $69 pp. There is also an optional cheese course, with or without wine, served between the salad and dessert. The menu lists six courses, but a little pre-dinner freebie was also included, along with a packaged home-made cookie and a small bag of elderberry tea to take home."

  • "While I had a wee bit of trouble finding the restaurant, once I arrived, it was a first class experience all evening. Some of the best service anywhere! Very good food. Diversity of flavors. Excellent wine pairings. Eagerness to answer my myriad questions, and to discuss my abundant comments. I hope everyone who visits Oakhurst, or who lives in this general area, has the opportunity to dine at this unexpected gem."

  • "We are local to Oakhurst and tried Erna's for the first time the other night. Wonderful food and service..Not too over the top fancy..but very well executed...and although the plates were small, the overall price fixe meal was quite satisfying. There is a bar to the left of the entrance, that is a cellar type setting and has great cocktails and wines by the glass plus bar appetizers, not overly fancy or expensive, but a cut above your typical bar food.. Great way to try the place out rather than waiting for the special occasion. We had reservations given it was a Friday night 6:30, but there were quite a few empty tables until about 7:30 so I think they can take a few "walk ins". They also have a "locals night" which we plan to try soon!"
