A word from Erminia Ristorante
Erminia, opened in 1982, is New York City’s most romantic restaurant. Obtaining some of the Zagat Survey’s most highly rated scores for food, service and décor each year, the Roman influenced Italian food is second to none on the Upper East Side. Forbes Magazine twice selected Erminia as its number one Top Pick for food. Most diners agree that the original concoctions prepared here will win the hearts of all those who come to experience the fare. The Swiss Alps cabin-like atmosphere accents the rustic feel at Erminia.Continued

  • "Wine list very overpriced...Not a lot of choice Mostly Italian wines..No bar, which they should have told me when I made the reservation. Overall a good exerience and would return knowing their limitations."

  • "The food was very good, perfectly seasoned, and wonderfully flavorful. The specials of the day reflected seasonal selections with a creative twist. I would definitely return."

  • "Took my wife for her birthday. It was quaint and quiet with an old world charm. We felt we were eating dinner in a small European village. The BEST Italian food (with the possible exception of my wife's homemade sauce) that we have ever had. They also turned us on to a fantastic organic cabernet. We are going to become regulars."

  • "We have been wanting to go to Erminia for a long time but couldn't get a reservation, but last night we were able to get a table. It was wonderful! The ambiance is warm and delightful. The food was delicious. Italian restaurants abound in the UES but this one sets itself apart, because the food was so well prepared from homemade pasta to fish that was cooked perfectly, and not swimming in olive oil. Everyone at our table thoroughly enjoyed their dinner. The service was attentive. We will definitely try again for another reservation."

  • "This restaurant has a reputation for being "one of the most romantic restaurants" in NYC. Romantic? More like musty. It's like dining in a cave. With odd decor and no charm. Plus, the fact that they serve NO LIQUOR -- just wine -- is something I wished I'd known in advance. After a long day, my husband and I each wanted a vodka, not a glass of white wine, to no avail. Also, I'm not wild about a restaurant who fancies themselves as fancy and then doesn't have a dress code. The people at the table next to us looked like slobs -- in bad T shirts and jeans. No good. I would never go back to Erminia, even though the food was okay, because everything else was not."

  • "I wanted somethign very specific that wasnt on the menu and they made it without a single hint of judgement. The food was lovely and the space is very cozy. Liked it a lot."

  • "We weren't expecting much more than the normal a very side Italian restaurant. It's quite charming very small but the service,at least from our waiter, was exceptional. The young lady who took our coats couldn't have been nicer. My only negative would be that the owner ( I assume) was extremely stiff and not particularly friendly. Notwithstanding his coldness we would definitely go backy"

  • "Great restaurant. Go here. If impressing your date is the objective, then definitely go here. It is incredibly small, but incredibly good. The food was excellent. This is not your big-portion-size Italian restaurant. This is the authentic Italian food with authentic flavor restaurant. A lot of girls will love this place because it is small and intimate. On the down side, because it is so small the tables are pretty close together so expect to be able to hear the people next you, but don't let that discourage you...just go with it. The waiters/hosts when I went were good people too...a couple of funny guys from Italy. They won't rush you and will make solid menu recommendations."

  • "Erminia Ristorante was on our short list of UES restaurants to try after walking past it every day for the better part of six months. We decided to try it for a late Valentine's Day dinner and the food and service were top-notch. The intimate, quiet atmosphere (the "No cell phones" sign was a nice touch) and old-world decor only helped make the dinner more enjoyable. Other than being great all around, this little restaurant does something else that I haven't been able to find much of recently: it transports diners away from the hustle and bustle of the city and plants them squarely in another world. If you have a chance to visit, you'll see what I mean."

  • "Right off the avenue – you feel peaceful the moment you sit down – almost too quiet inside. Food was good, but we’re not going to return there to get that special dish. Alcohol wise, they only have wine – no liquor! Other reviews commented about it being “expensive” but we didn’t feel this is was the case – it’s not more expensive than the other high-end Italian restaurants you might have visited. Very good, overall."

  • "The food here was excellent, particularly the exquisite pasta. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The service was proper and on the chilly side. Was it because we are not regulars?"

  • "Went there with my girlfriend due to it's romantic rating in Open Table. Had a fabulous experience. I think I counted only 12 tables. Attentive service without being pushy. Delicious food (the lamb meatball appetizer special was a treat!). Best veal chop I've had at a restaurant. Perfect Panna Cotta for desert capped off the evening! I didn't even feel rushed at the end even though I feel they could have sold the table 2 times over. We're going back!"

  • "First visit, and we will return. A fairly short menu was supplemented by several interesting specials. Fennel and arugula salad was just the right blend, fennel a little wilted to add flavor. Fettucine done well with classic ragu. Generous size Colorado lamb chops were excellently grilled and finished with just the right amount of rosemary and garlic. The grilled vegetables were unremarkable, and the veal scallopine was nicely seasoned but the sauce was ordinary stock. Wine selections lacked sufficient choice in the "'sweet spot" $60-90 range. Friendly and helpful hosts, but, as one would expect in a small place on Saturday, not much time to linger. Bit that's OK, also. ."

  • "Erminia is a small intimate restaurant, with good food. Our Long Island friends have eaten there before, and recommended this restaurant. We arrived at 6:30, and except for another party, our group of six were the only ones there. Within an hour or so, it was full. Our bulky coats were whisked away, and we were attended to quite nicely by the staff. We had drinks, appetizers, entrees, and deserts, and with the tip, was about 130 per couple, not bad at all. Was anticipating a lot more, as saw the 4 dollar signs on the open table review, but was quite pleased. Everyone was quite satisfied with their meal."

  • "Wow, my first time, what a wonderful surprise. It was almost perfect. They serve a sort of dumpling at the beginning that is to die for. Hard to explain, so go there and try it. You wont be disappointed. It is very quiet and intimate, so for the right companion and you have yourself a home run. I had been looking for a new home restaurant, I think I found it. PS: Even saw one of the "housewives" there."

  • "My husband and I wanted to try a different restaurant when we visited New York. Erminia's was the one we chose from the Open Table website. It was incredibly charming and the food was delicious. Their home made desserts were wonderful. The service was terrific and the staff was very attentive. Erminias is now my favorite New York restaurant! Thank you Open Table!"

  • "First time at Ermina, and it was a great experience. The food was delicious, everything. Fairly pricey, but doable once in a while. Dinner for 3 with just a couple of beers was $240 all in. The space is very small, only 12 tables, but the decor is such that you feel you've walked into a high class restaurant up in the country instead of the city, which is very romantic. The staff was attentive and curtious. Will definitely go again."

  • "The restaurant and the menu were amazing. The ambience is something that cannot be described: it really looked like an old Italian eatery. Incredibly romantic. Unfortunately, it's not in a nice neighborhood: you can feel (and see) the difference between the restaurant and the surroundings."

  • "What a wonderful dining experience. The entire experience here is Old World which is a good thing from our point of view. Our dining and wine preferences were handled adroitly and with charm. Our reservation was at the time of the evening that is the logical turning of the tables, so there was a little back-up as the first set of diners cleared their bill. Given the intimate dining room and the equally intimate waiting area (the doorway) we got to interact with some of our fellow diners. We all marveled at how such a small, intimate and high quality restaurant can still exist, but we are glad that it does. The staff make the difference between a very good experience and a memorable one. Viva la grappa!"

  • "The evening began well with a pleasant meal, but then about an hour into the dinner the dining room emptied. The staff propped the front door open & began to take the trash out from the kitchen. They removed all the flower arrangements from the tables, including ours! Blew out the candles at all the tables. Set the chairs up on the tables all around us. They obviously wanted to close & head home for the evening. It definitely made us feel unwelcome. As we rushed to finish our dessert and final glasses of wine, the waiter unprompted brought us our check. And then a few minutes later they (again unprompted) brought our coats from the cloakroom and placed them near our table. Our reservation was for 8:30 & departed with no goodbyes at 10pm!"

  • "A perfect spot for a cold winter's night. Appetizer grilled vegetables consisted of an interesting and tasty combination. Special asparagus with brown butter and truffle oil was absolute perfection. Main course stuffed chicken was excellent and my husband wanted to lick the plate. My linguini with clams was also very good and I ate the entire serving. (Although next time I'll order the bolognese as did the people at the next table - that looked delicious.) Service was very good, no complaints. Wine list is fine for this type of restaurant. Its a small place so don't go if you're claustrophobic or hate sitting close to other people. But do go if you like that sort of 'European' charm. We will definitely be going back quite often!"

  • "Erminia is superb!! We had the best time and the best food. The restaurant is small and intimate. wine list, while pricey, is broad and has choices from US, Italy and France. We found reasonably priced wines with the assistance of our waiter. The food is perfectly prepared. Dover sole was tender, flavorfull and elegant. The asparagus appetizer - baked and with a touch of honey was unique and most delicious. Can't wait to return!"

  • "Returning for another anniversary, we expected a quiet, romantic dinner at this little, jewel of a restaurant. Imagine our surprise on walking in to a large table of nine loud men. One of NYC ten most romantic restaurants? Not this time!"

  • "If you're looking for a small romantic place, this is it, rustic charm with candlelight. Food is good but was expecting better. Service is very good. Prices are Mahattanish, $18 for a glass of Chianti."

  • "Food and atmosphere made us want to stay longer and enjoy our romantic meal, but the pacing of the food made this impossible. On a Saturday night, seemed like the staff was aiming to get us out in an hour, including appetizers, main course and dessert. Other tables were out in less and the staff did not seem to appreciate our desire to finish our bottle of wine before ordering dessert. For this price point (over $200 for 2 people), one expects to linger, enjoy and not be rushed. Place is tiny and the next round of reservations came in soon after. Perhaps they need to better space them out."

  • "What a great find for a romantic evening with excellent Italian food. The staff was friendly and very professional. I particularly liked the sign that asked that no phones be used while dining. You are there to enjoy the company and the food, not to test those who are elsewhere."

  • "Very small restaurant about 12 tables, not crowed on the Wed night we were there. 6pm one other couple at 8pm half tables were taken. I felt the service could have been warmer, never saw a smile, strictly business. Dim lighting with candles. Special our night was Filet Bronzino with clams and mussels, my wife ordered veal with mushrooms, both were very good. Had to ask for a water refill, that bothered me, however when my wine glass was close to empty then I was asked if I wanted another, which I did. Overall, I would be back but I am am not rushing back"

  • "Erminia is the perfect hidden neighborhood gem. While the prices may not be a bit more than some of the other Italian spots in the area, the food is certainly worth every penny and so is the atmosphere. Erminia is great for a date night, dinner with visiting relatives, or just a nice evening out of the apartment."

  • "I am not very good at writing reviews, but our dining experience at Erminia was very special. In addition to superb food, we could not ask for better service or ambience as, in fact, I indicated above. It was the way good dining should be and we definitely hope to come again the next time we are in the City (we live in northwest Connecticut). Thank you very much for this opportunity to put our feelings in writing."

  • "We had a wonderful meal at Erminia. We were there ten years ago and the food and service remain outstanding. Our Rotolo di Pasta was superb, as was the seared duck breast w/blueberry sauce and our grilled lamb chops. The Napoleon dessert was light, creamy and memorable. The diners were a mix of neighborhood people and destination-seekers like us, both young and not-so-young. There are eleven tables, some with romantic couples, others with friends enjoying a casual delicious dinner. With a dining room this small the ambiance will depend on who's there. This night was quite lively; the tables are close together even by NYC standards, but for us this added to the experience. Note: Be sure to return their call to confirm reservation!"
