Diner Reviews
  • "The entrees and appetizers were large, rich, creamy, and often fried or mayoed. Which could explain the older, heavier crowd. Average customer age - 55, average weight, 255. Not really our taste. But it came recommended. Not bad, but not worth it either."

  • "The food was fantastic. I had the roasted romaine with artichokes and my wife had the baby spinach salad, we both said it was the one of the best salad we have ever had. The monk fish and the Wagyu strip perfect. The chef came to our table and thanked us for coming."

  • "On Sundays at Erling's, there is a three-course menu special for $38. And on the first SUnday of the month, there is no corkage fee! The special menu offers several starters, entrees and desserts. The food is delicious and the selections are varied so there is an option for everyone. This is a great way to enjoy the talent of Erling Jensen without a huge hit to the pocketbook!"

  • "This was our first visit. We dined here on a recommendation from a colleague. It does not disappoint. We were welcomed into the restaurant with smiles & handshakes at the door. We were seated at a table that looked inviting, and our server was very nice. I ordered the Crab with Hollandaise for an appetizer, and the Monkfish for an entree. Oh how I wish I had more! It was outstanding! I could not finish my portion and was excited to have enough left to bring home for later. My only complaint is that the waitress at the next table noticed that we were done eating, and offered to take our plates and box up our leftovers to go. We ordered and ate dessert. She never brought our leftovers back, and we were halfway home before we realized it."

  • "We love Erling's and it is our favorite special occasion place. We wanted to take friends out for a 50th Anniversary celebration, and chose our favorite place. The Sunday Special Menu is great -- love being able to get a full meal for $38 each! Our only complaint is that it was a crowded noisy evening. The staff was hustling with their usual graciousness, but it would be my guess that they were down one person as far as managing the crowd. And the 2 men behind us got louder and more obnoxious the more they drank. None of those are things that a restaurant can control, so they did a very admirable job keeping things going. Our server "Too Tall" was his usual gracious and welcoming self, and the food was wonderful, as always."

  • "Went here for my 14 year anniversary after hearing such good reviews. Our waiter was very pushy and not real knowledgable. My wife's crab cakes and shrimp and pasta was great however I ordered a filet and it came out butterflied which out of all the restaurants I have been to I have never received a filet that was cut in half and cooked. It tasted like the worst dry roast I have ever eaten and when u pay $41 for a steak you would expect it to be wonderful. This was by far the worst steak I have ever ordered. Needless to say I left there hungry as the steak was not edible."

  • "Erling Jensen's is a hidden Memphis wonder. The service and the cuisine are the best that Memphis has to offer. Order a Cesar salad? It will be unlike any salad you have ever had before. Every dish is innovative. Do you feel a bit intimidated by fine dining? Ask for 'Too Tall'. He will put you at ease. Be sure and try the Sunday evening menu. I love this place."

  • "My wife's monkfish was severely overcooked. Hard and dry. What is it about restaurants in the MidSouth? Fish should be cooked gently and served on the rare side. Having said that, my Elk was phenomenal. Perfectly cooked and with a beautiful mineral taste. "

  • "Definately a gem of a resturant. Service was perfect, the menu was unique, the food was outstanding, with tasty surprises between courses. The wine list was comprehensive and would satisy most conosoues. The chef visited us several times to insure everything was to our liking. Overall a great experience. We will return!"

  • "It's a great place with terrific food & very professional service. We have eaten there for years for special occasions, & now with the special Sunday night menu, we will be going more often. We really enjoy the Sunday menu, it's remarkably inexpensive & the portion sizes are just right."

  • "The carrot soup was absolutely delicious. The smoked salmon was good, but I've had much more tasty versions. The Caesar salad was ordinary, not much flavor to the dressing. The buffalo fillet had a good flavor to the meat, which was mostly quite tender, but was under cooked. The Bearnaise sauce was OK. The salmon entree was OK but not special. Neither desert was special. I don't even remember them. "

  • "Never disappointed with this restaurant. They had just added a halibut dish, and the fish tasted so fresh, you would have thought it was caught that day. Chef stopped us before we left to make sure everything was perfect, always a nice touch!"

  • "I have never written a revwiew of a restaurant before but this needs to be said. Every fine dining restaurant in Memphis follows the same theme. The appetizer is great. The salad is great. The sides are great. The bread is great. The desert is great. The way the meat is cooked is spot on. The service is great. The food looked like a work of art. The qualitiy of the meat itself... the wagyu kobe strip steak...was not there. That is a critique of the supplier of meat and not the restaurant per se, and other people I have spoken to who ordered other things found it to be very good. I could just be picky when it comes to quality beef, but I do know for a fact that I can get twice the quality for 1/5 the cost at home. I am done. "

  • "Charming restaurant, visible and engaging chef, spectacular food and wine! I waited for my guest at the small bar. Friendly and elegant bar tender. Dining was a pleasure. Our server was astute to our need to be alone and in our state of romantic bliss, while serving around us and politely prompted us through the meal, despite our many hours at the table. What can I say? It was a special and truly memorable occasion. The dover sole was one of the best I have experienced. "

  • "Very upscale dining. Erling Jensen is by far one of my favorite restaurants. From the moment you step through the doors until the moment you leave the staff makes you feel like you are the only customer. The food is absolutely wonderful!!! If I had my choice of any restaurant in the world to dine it would be this one hands down!!!"

  • "My husband and I enjoy this restaurant every once in awhile for special occasions. Yes, it is pricey, but the fantastic cuisine, wonderful service, and romantic setting are what we love! Some of our favorite things to order here are the lobster pancake, bison, bass, chocolate soufflé, and this time we tried the bananas foster soufflé (AMAZING!). They have a very good wine list but this time we chose to bring our own (just a $10 corkage fee, not bad I guess). You can't go wrong here no matter what you order, it is all fantastic! The service is always top-notch and there is complimentary valet parking too. We will be back as soon as we can!"

  • "This is the best restaurant in Memphis. So perfect in every way that even ingredients in a dish that doesnt usually sound appealing are quickly transformed into something beyond fabulous. My favorite place to treat my palate to perfection. Thank you for making a meal something extraordinary. "

  • "I surprised a friend for their birthday and I must admit I was surprised as well. This place is absolutely wonderful. I really had an enjoyable experience and the stafff was helpful and pleasant."

  • "This is a great little restaurant with a very good wine list. They have partitions that can be opened or closed if other sections get noisy. There were no children the night we were there but the partitions would be helpful if there were. The menu is eclectic and creative. And the chef will make something special to suit your dietary needs, as was the case with us. We requested a specific drink and mixer when we scheduled our reservation and they had it ready for us when we ordered! The wait staff was excellent and "slowed things down" as requested during our evening. It's a pricey place so go with the understanding that a glass of wine can cost what an entrée is at another place."

  • "The evening could not have been better! From the lobster pancake, fois gras, and crawfish bisque, through the elk, lamb, and sea bass with truffled gnocchi, to the chocolate soufflé, and banana's Foster souffle, including the wine, limoncello, and coffee, each part of the dinner built to create a terrific dinning experience. The staff was knowledgable, attentive, and gracious. We had no idea how late it was. We were enjoying good food, good wine, and good friends and were not aware of the time. When we left, we realized that we were the last ones in the restaurant. Our car was waiting at the front door, but there had been no effort to rush us out. We have had very fine meals here, in the past. This one stood out as remarkable!"

  • "My family dined here recently and had a wonderful meal. We are all "foodies" and therefore tried lots of different items on the menu. We even have a vegetarian in our midst, and the restaurant made a delicious vegetable plate for him, with some gnocchi to die for. All in all we had a great time."

  • "Once again I bragged to my guest about having reservations at the best restaurant in town, and once again Erling Jensen delivered (in a big way!). Our meal last Saturday night could not have been better. From the atmosphere of the restaurant, uncrowded at 6pm, but hopping by 7:30pm, to the ultimate bottle of Chardonnay, to the incredible entrees (Monkfish for me / Scallops for her), to the chocolate soufflé to die for. Our server offered the perfect level of attentiveness without intrusion… and as we walked out the front door, rather than having to summon the valet, he magically had our car waiting. It just doesn't get any better than this. Do yourself a huge favor and take yourself to Erling Jensen's this weekend."

  • "Erling Jensen is always a delicious - one of the best in Memphis. Service is spot on and the food is amazing. After many delicious courses, the chocolate soufflé is a delicious crown jewel. If you've never been, go. If you haven't been in a while, go back."

  • "We followed the advice of other reviewers and started our meal with the lobster pancake. We are lobster lovers and it was delicious! He ordered the kobe strip and I ordered the scallops--we both savored every bite! The wait staff was amazing and accommodated every special request--even when I asked them for a special dessert that was not on the menu (I did request it in advance). They really went over and beyond to make the night perfect! I would recommend Erling Jensen to anyone looking for a special night out. Best meal I've had in a while and well worth the price."

  • "This was my second "birthday occasion" visit to the restaurant, and I wondered if I would be as blown away with all aspects of the experience as I had been the first time I ate here. The second time did not disappoint; just reaffirmed that Erling Jensen is one of the most outstanding places I have ever dinned. Wonderful friendliest, and attention to every detail of the gustatory experience is addressed. Lovely surroundings, incredible food and service; my dinner companion and I were in diner's nirvana."

  • "I have dined at some of the finest restaurants around, but EJ is at the top of my list when it comes to superb, upscale, fine dining. The professionalism, presentations, service, and courtesy from the staff is top notch, not to mention the great food. I have and will continue to highly recommend EJ. It's alway a delight to see Mr. Jensen at every visit. Keep doing what you do Mr. Jensen and I will keep coming back."

  • "Hands down, one of the BEST experiences I've ever had in Memphis...perhaps the entire state of TN! From the parking lot reception to parking lot departure, this place is first class. The wine list, the lobster and crab cake appetizers, the roasted fish, the steak that literally melted in my mouth....oh, did I mention the crab cake appetizer? We had to skip the dessert because of the meal selection. I travel for a living and have eaten at tons of restaurants, but there are only a handful that I truly remember....this one is part of that handful!"
