Diner Reviews
  • "Well I usually have dinner at the Erie, we had lunch there the other day. Is a beautiful setting, outdoors on the patio, and a perfect place a quiet business meeting."

  • "We frequent Erie Cafe many times a month and always keep coming back for more. The seafood is delicious and fresh while the Prime Rib is outstanding. I would argue to say the best in the city. Since we heard that Erie Cafe only serves a limited amount of prime rib each night we even make it a point to get there early to guarantee we get a slice! Its cooked to perfection! If you want to go to a hidden neighborhood restaurant with GREAT food and a friendly staff go to Erie Cafe."

  • "We would have liked to sit outside on the river, but it started raining just as we arrived; no matter, indoor dining area was old-fashioned and nice. Our server was awesome. The antipasto platter was traditional, but I still found it a bit lacking...maybe too basic. They were out of the special that night that my SO was super looking forward to; he ended up getting something else that was more expensive and I was a bit surprised that they didn't comp the difference between the special and what he ended up ordering. Either way, his steak was perfect. I'm veg so ordered the ravioli and it was super cheesy and delicious. Coffee offered after dinner. Timing on everything was perfect. Felt super relaxed and enjoyed our dinner out immensely."

  • "My husband and I decided to go to the Erie Cafe on our last night in Chicago (from LA area). We asked a few locals which steak house they recommended, because we didn't want to end up at an overpriced, tourist trap. Well, we are so happy they recommended Erie's! We ordered grilled calamari to start that was prepared to perfection! The calamari had a slight smokey taste and were not "rubbery" at all. For our main course we ordered two ribeye steaks (bone in), sautéed spinach and asparagus. We were both ASTONISHED when they came out because they were enormous! However, they were both cooked exactly the way we ordered them. Additionally, the meat melted in our mouths! The sides were great too, but the steaks were amazing! The service ROCKED!"

  • "I hesitate to write this, because I want it to stay a nice, quiet lunch spot, but I love going to Erie Cafe for lunch! It's usually not too busy, but the staff is amazingly attentive (the service is great, no matter the time of day). Perfect for a business lunch and nice for non-business reasons, too. The lunch portions are generous - I find myself ordering the old-school cobb salad often, but the grilled calamari is really unique and delicious. The burger is also a great option. If there's something that you like on the dinner menu that's not available on the lunch menu, just ask - they will generally accommodate the request if they can. I also enjoy Erie Cafe for dinner, but I really feel like the lunch option is great!"

  • "We went to the Erie cafe for a celebration and a farewell. The experience was outstanding in spite of the rain. Staff treated us like royalty."

  • "The food was good, but the server was a little slow."

  • "After reading the other reviews, I thought this steak would knock my socks off. It was good but not great. House salad was average. Service was very good, and the noise level and ambiance was pleasant. I was disappointed and would not go out of my way to return. Maybe if I lived in the hood, it's convenient, but not worth going out of your way for."

  • "My friends suggested me meet at the Erie Cafe. The food was OK. I think steakhouses like this are generally way overpriced, so I try to find something more reasonable like pasta or chicken. The food was not really special. I won't plan to go back."

  • "Took us a long to be seated, took us a long time to be seated, service fair, portions to large."

  • "Unfortunately were seated at a table near the front and the bar. Everyone was drunk off their rockers. They were literally scream talking to each other at the tables and to people at the bar. This is all fine if they were not serving normal dining guests. It was just awful to watch and hear such absurdity. We ordered lamb chops medium rare and they came out well, well, dried out done. Sent them back and the new ones finally came out after the other diner was finished with the meal. We ordered asparagus and spinach came out. The server said they were out of what we ordered so they sent out something else. What? Really? Ask what I'd like instead. Overall avoid this place late night unless you want to watch young trixies pick up old men! Sad."

  • "Lot of bar action, clubby, excellent service and big menu. Food is always great. Almost always go to the Erie Café when we visit Chicago."

  • "We celebrated a birthday...the service was very attentive and customer focus. The climate/mood/atompshere was engaging and celebratory. Will dine there again and soon!"

  • "We been there many of times with family and friends but this time dined with several out of town guest. It was a little busy for the waiter (forgt to get wine for one of our guest) but all ended up working out fine. will be plenty of left overs if you are not hungry! Great place for groups to gather. "

  • "Fun in the sun on their patio. Had a great day outside and inside was nice and quiet. Had a big space for parties. "
    Dined on 5/31/2014
  • "We had a great dinner. Six people....sat outside for drinks right on the river....so great....then dined inside as it got cooler outside. Food was great. Easy to hear each other...love round tables for party of six...you can speak to all instead of just the two next to you on either side."

  • "The staff was disorganized and forgot to seat us. The veal parm was bad and the steak had 0 seasoning. I won't be back."

  • "I went with a group of 12 people customers mainly . We ordered several dishes mainly Prime Rib ( awesome !!!) . Each dish was delicious and teated as kings "

  • "This is a steak house of long standing and that's what they do best. For those of us who love the dish, their liver and bacon is without par in this city. The waiters, by the way, are knowledgeable and friendly, but pros and do not waste your time or theirs hovering and pushing specials and then disappearing. If you enjoy a second cocktail, it will be brought to you promptly. And there is no table churning. Good place. Good people."

  • "We eat at Erie Street often and the reason is the food is always good and the service even better. If you are looking for a great meal, without all the hoop la, this is the place. Old fashioned hospitality, service by an experienced waitstaff who go out of their way to help you celebrate special occasions. This meal we celebrated a graduation and besides putting decorations on the table for us, they happily used our plates and napkins then served and cut the cake for us. "

  • "Great for business meetings. Steak and seafood similar to Gene and Giorgetti's, but better service. Steak and italian selections were as good or better. Generous portions. Accomodating regarding orders. "

  • "The restaurant is great in the summer when you can sit outside. There are a few pasta dishes that are great and the salad with shrimp is good. Those who had steak said it could have been better. The drinks are good and the service is good as well. I think there are many good choices on the menu!"

  • "The Erie Cafe. If you have been there, that is all that needs to be said... I have lost count at how many times I have been at the Erie. From the valet service, to Ross and the front door, to the bartenders, and the excellent wait staff. Oh yes, the food. All fantastic, all memorable. I cannot wait to return."

  • "The steak here is great. This is a more casual old style steakhouse. Portions are huge. The grilled calamari is a very good appetizer. The bread is crusty and fresh. The breadsticks are not. The soups and salads are very good. Had a bone in rib eye that was perfectly done medium rare. T bone was a bit too rare. Veal parmagiano was great. Nice wine list. Not overly commercial. "

  • "The food was delicious, especially the calamari but not a great place to go on an hour lunch break. We usually only go for dinner. Great place for all size groups. Service is always great!"

  • "Jose and Martine are among the best wait staff in the City-friendly knowledgable and always professional. The grilled calamari is the best calamari dish I've ever had. I can be here several days a week and Erie Cafe is always inviting, pleasant, and a great experience. And the outdoor patio on a nice day is the best table in the City. Cannot miss for a great business lunch either. Bone in ribeye with red wine reduction sauce and mushroom bacon cap is a real treat. Enjoy your next visit here....."

  • "Chicago is known for having great steak restaurants. The Erie Cafe is one of our best. The Bone in ribeye and the lamb chops are my favorite in the city. If you decide to dine here you will not be dissatisfied in any way. There are three factors I use to rate the restaurants I dine in. Service, ambiance and food quality. The Erie Cafe continually exceeds all my expectations. "

  • "This was our first time to Erie. We had an early dinner at 5 p.m. on a Saturday before watching our daughter's play at stage 773. From the moment we walked in the door the experience was fantastic! Miguel our waiter was excellant and not only professional but was wonderful in conversation and taking care of all our needs. He also kept the table crumbless. The drinks were pleasant and the food outstanding. The flavors were exciting. The restuarant was very nicely laid out and very much a five star experience for a four star price. I'll be back!"

  • "I've been going to the Erie Cafe for twenty years, and it is the best kept secret of the entire Chicago Downtown area. You are going to pay as much as any Downtown restaurant, but you truly do get a lot of food for the money by comparison, and the service is impeccable. All the waiters are attentive without being pushy. No matter what night it is, you just seem never to have to wait to get a table. I've been to Rosebud's, Gibsons, Carmines, the Signature Room, Maggiano's, The Capital Grille, and countless others. They are excellent establishments, but I'm always made to feel better going to the Erie Cafe. The food is perfectly prepared, and their bar is second to none. I have never been disappointed."

  • "I first tried the Erie Cafe about a year and a half a go, and it has become my go to steak place in Chicago. Big portions, perfectly cooked steaks, and classic sides are served by a helpful and attentive waitstaff. I'll be back."

  • "Erie still has the best deal in town for a great steak dinner, i.e. bone in rib-eye, salad, and fries all included with your meal. The food is great and the atmosphere is low keyed. A great place to watch a Hawk's game as well."

  • "Great food, old time Chicago service and nice atmosphere. Love that you can get a bottle of wine for $38 instead of $50 for a similar wine in other Italian places."

  • "A wonderful neighborhood restaurant with an Italian flair. The food is awesome. It is not "foo foo" food. The portions are adequate. The whitefish was prepared perfectly. The fish was so large that I took the remainder home and had it the next morning. It was still just as good the next day. The service by the staff was excellent--not intrusive. My only issue with this restaurant is that I think it somewhat pricey--perhaps overpriced. The whitefish was $32 for just a fish on a plate. For the Vesuvio style whitefish (add potatoes only) that was another $4.50. The ambience, food quality, and service make this a top Chicago restaurant. I will return."

  • "Food is great! Quiet location at the end of Erie. Sat a group of ten with no problem. Noise level was perfect for us to discuss business. We were all able to participate in the same conversation! Wait staff is knowledgable, friendly, and patient. Has a great business casual feel which is neither stuffy nor dumpy. Would defiantly eat here again for business and personal occasions."
