After just moving to the neighborhood I was thrilled to have a good steak house one block away. Unfortunately everything about the meal was wrong. We were seated right away, yet after that it took at least 5 minutes for someone to approach our table. Ordered 2 cocktails, and the waiter left bread at the table. In the breadbasket were sesame sticks which were too salty to eat and a mini bread loaf that was dry and incredibly hard. After we received our drinks we waited and waited again for our waiter to return. We waited so long that I said if he isn't back in 10 minutes we are paying for our drinks and leaving to eat at home. 5 minutes later he returned. (I wish we had left) Soup or salad comes with the meal..we each got a soup and they were average. We also ordered a strip and the petite filet butterflied, both cooked medium. The steaks also come with potatoes. By potatoes I mean round fries that were too burnt to eat :( Luckily the strip was cooked correctly. My filet was WELL DONE. Not a smidge of pink. When the waiter came back to check on us i was almost half way through my dry miserable steak. I asked which one of us actually received the Medium because our steaks were so incredibly different. His response was that he felt bad that mine was so over cooked which means he knew it was over cooked when he brought it out but served it anyway. He offered a dessert on the house but after everything else was so bad we didn't want to waste our time on a poor dessert. He took a drink off the bill for the bad steak. It was a nice gesture, but we will never eat at Erie again nor will we recommend it.

Very cold night in Chicago so we did not want to go far from my brother's condo. The Erie Cafe was perfect for a Birthday dinner celebration and frankly, good enough to go across town for. The prices are high but so is the quality and the service. This is a steakhouse first and they do them right. The sides are excellent and the portions plentiful. On this Saturday night there were all kinds of groups from couples to families with kids of all ages. The wine list is reasonable for a high end steak house. No reason not to put this place on your places to go for a special occasion! And if you live nearby, then, you may go more often!

Reccommended by a local this was a great suggestion. The starters could be a meal in themselves. The grilled calamari is a must. The flavor was exceptional and different than any calamari before. The Insalata Caprese was great. I was looking forward to some great mozzarella, but to my surprize the great taste of the tomatoes over shadowed the cheese. We also had the Fried Ravioli with blue cheese. They were also very good. The steaks were perfectly cooked. The prime rib was massive. We were too full to consider dessert. It is definately worth a visit. It was also nice that it seemed like a more local restaurant and not a tourist spot. I will go back next time in Chicago, for sure.

I've heard many things about this place and I've decided to have a nice romantic dinner with my spouse. The moment we walked in, there was a complete chaos inside. No hostes greeting you, no manger ...nobody was paying attention to us for good 10 mins when we were standing by the door. Finally somebody came by asked me how many people in my party and then graved a couple in front of us to sit them down. Few minutes later I've asked for manger. It came to my disappointment that it was the same guy. I told him that I had a reservation and I heard in return that they are behind and I've been asked what time is on my watch , trying to challenge me that I'm not waiting too long. Rude, unprofessional and no customer service skilles. Food was ok

But what I got was nice

Not fvery freindly right from the get go. Person seating j ust blew past us and sat a regular down - he did not even say hi - We went to the bar where the bartender did not say word and tossed our drinks down and left. I thought our server was gong to be different but after the first intro he turned out to be unfriendly and in a rush - He had a few tables but nothing that he should not have been able to handle. I ha the chicken Vesuvio the chicken was way over cooked but the potatoes were good. My boyfriend had the pork chop and it was very good - the Calamari was good - but with all the restaurants in Chicago I don't think I would bother to come back

Erie Café is always a reliable and accommodating spot for lunch or dinner. The grilled calamari is great as is the caprese salad rocks, but don't forget the Fontanini sausage/peppers as well. We had the grilled yellow fin tuna for lunch and it was cooked to perfection to my shocking because I usually don't do fish at a steakhouse. Keep it up EC, we'll miss the outdoor seating as Vortex sets in!

Celebrated our anniversary here. We had a variety of dishes, linguine with clams, cheese ravioli, mussels marinara and veal marsala. Lots of garlic, the veal dish was just so so and all could have been hotter. Nice, cold crisp house salad with house dressing was just fine. We were at the low to middle priced meals and still spent over $250 for four which included 2 drinks each. I'd go again for special occasion.

Normally the review for Erie would be a 4 1/2 stars as the food is always excellent. This night I had the whitefish and it came back a bit burnt and definetly overdone and dry which is the first for this place. I was with clients otherwise I would have asked it to be sent back.

We came to Erie Cafe because it was voted in the top 20 steakhouses in Chicago by Chicago Magazine. We are going to all of these steakhouses. Immediately i noticed how outdated the decor was and one look at the menu told me there had been no updates or additions in at least 20 or 30 years, and the menu was stained and dirty. Our waiter was nice enough, but never actually introduced himself. And to top it off i did not enjoy the meal. The bread at the beginning was dry and tough, my steak was cooked properly on the inside but the outside was charred to the point of ruining any flavor there might have been and I don't think the flavor was great anyway. We did not stay for dessert, we weren't even offered a dessert menu.

My best friend and I visit Chicago several times a year. Her son, who lives there, has made it a habit to take us some place new for every meal. Last fall he moved from 2 East Erie to Kingsbury near Erie and took us to the Cafe. Life will never be the same. Saturday night we returned (he was out of town so my friend and I stayed at his condo) and the Cafe was without question where we wanted to eat. We ordered ONE order of prime rib, done to perfection (medium rare/rare) and cut in half through the thickness. We had a single salad, single order of grilled asparagus and the potatoes that come with the meal. The meat melts in your mouth. Best prime rib EVER. We had enough left to feed her son and his fiancee a full meal. We will be back!!

They were extremely busy. We didn't get seated for an hour past our reservation. When we got there they said 20 minutes we went to check after 20 minutes and were told it would be another 20 minutes. Our waiter seemed to forget about us. The food wasn't that great. We didn't get a steak so maybe if we had it would have been better as this is a steak place. I was here a few years ago and it was better.

Had a group of 16, in upstairs private dining room. Service was good, and food was good. Most people got the house special bone in rib eye, which is huge! Everyone liked the bone in rib eye. I got the filet. Don'tget the filet. it was dry and tough, with no flavor at all... Also, the salad was pitiful...soaked in house dressing, it was warm and wilted.

I love Erie Cafe and try to go there whenever time permits, especially during the summer months. My last experience was not so great as I was seated next to some folks outdoors smoking smelly cigars. If you are serious about food, you don't want smoke with every bite. Some restaurants ban smoking from patios, which is great. I think at the least you should separate the smokers from the non. I love the food and the fresh preparation.

I love this place, but I have to point out the patio experience we had. The petite filet mignon special with shrimp was amazing-the steak cooked to perfection! I often have to send back my steak at other steakhouses for further cooking, but never here! I don't usually write reviews, but people should know that if they sit on the outdoor patio (which I truly have enjoyed in the past), it has been overtaken by groups smoking cigars and couples out with their dogs. I love dogs, have one of my own, but I prefer to go on dates without her! It is in my opinion that cigar smoking shouldn't be allowed at outdoor patios where others are dining. I will go back, but I will only go when the weather is bad and I HAVE to sit indoors.

While Chicago has many very good steak and Italian food restaurants, only a handful are exceptional and Erie Café is one of the exceptional ones. From the moment you arrive to when you leave, it is a great experience where your absolute enjoyment of the food, beverages and service is the only thing on the mind of the staff and chefs. The steaks are prime cut and the pasta is homemade. The barmen make a good pour and great cocktails and the people watching is fabulous. The wait staff is fantastic without being obtrusive. My "go to" place whenever I'm in Chicago.

It has a very neighborhood feel in the restaurant and the outdoor seating overlooks the river, which is a nice plus when the weather is nice (and you can get the first-come, first-serve seating there!).
