Diner Reviews
  • "Unfortunately we ordered the fluke and found it boring. The sauce was nice but no vegetables. It should have been more interesting. An impressive meal would warrant such high prices. Our dessert was very good. The appetizer tuna tartare was minute for $22."

  • "My wife and I went for our anniversary. I dropped off a card and flowers beforehand to be on the table when we arrived. All was done flwlessly. The service was impeccable; worthy of the price. The entrees were a bit bland for my taste (my wife liked her lamb). Save room for the desserta, which were fantastic. Afterward, we were given a private tour of some of the other facilities (i.e. the Great Room and the room below."

  • "We sat by the fireplace, the service was friendly, professional, efficient and attentive. The tasting menu was delicious and they went out of their way to make our anniversary celebration a special one. I do wish the portion size for the main course was a bit larger. I am not a big dessert person so I would usually prefer a larger savory portion and just a petite four for dessert. But everything was delicious and gorgeous. They also make a fantastic Manhattan. It was a very special night and a wonderful and romantic setting"

  • "Celebrated my 2 year anniversary here with my Fiancee. Very romantic and we felt soooo relaxed after our brunch. Highly recommended. Our waitress even gave us a tour of the castle. :)"

  • "From beginning to end, it had all the style, ambiance, impeccable service and wonderful, beautifully-presented food and wine to make a best friend's birthday memorable in the nicest ways possible."

  • "I had not been to Equus since it had re-opened. The local Chamber of Commerce was offering a special, so we decided to give lunch a try. The food was amazing. We had a salad that was fresh, clean and vibrant. The Skate was fresh and perfectly cooked on a bed of smooth mashed potatoes, brussels and just the right amount of lemon and capers. I will go back again for dinner. But, not for lunch. I do not want to ONLY order a pre-fixe at lunch, and that appeared to be all that was available. So sad for me."

  • "My husband and I dined here for the 1st time on Feb 15. Valentines w-end but NOT valentines day, this was deliberate! The menu was a set menu (one set menu) at $125pp. We had not been informed of this when we made the reservation. Disappointed to not have at least one other menu choice but we accepted it. And we would have been happy with it if the food and service had been good. Each course came out too quickly and at one point we had two courses on the table at the same time. We ordered a 'valentine cocktail' before the meal and a bottle of wine for during the meal. However, the cocktails arrived with the 1st course and the wine arrived at the same time. Not worth anywhere near $125 pp!! Not impressed at all. We do not intend return."

  • "This whole review must be taken in context of price. , the service was a little informal and lacking, the food was good, but not mind blowing, and overall the experience was not that memorable. If you're serving a fixed menu of unusual dishes, perhaps the waitstaff could explain each dish as it comes out instead of saying "meat course" or "dessert". Also, no scotch / whiskey list available, which just seemed strange."

  • "I had high expectations of The Castle, considering the reviews Ion OpenTable; I was not disappointed. The service was, by far, some of the best I've received at a restaurant of this caliber. The servers were extremely attentive, the table was always cared for with a watchful eye, and except for a few minutes at the beginning of our experience, there was always someone waiting to answer a question or attend to a need. FOOD: presentation was impeccable, preparation was perfect, and the taste was a 90/100. I had the scallops, beef duo (short ribs were the best!), followed by a lavender creme brulee (the best I've had). Very romantic (which was our occasion), with orchids and candles on every table, and period room decor. I highly recommend!"

  • "Equus Restaurant is a great place for a special occasion, the service, food and ambience are great. To our surprise we were hit with a very high bill due to the fact that it was a valentines weekend and they had a pre-fixed menu. We were told about it when we sat down but not when we book it. We were not too happy about that, but we didn't want to ruin our dinner. I recommend this place but make sure that there's no pre-fixed menus before you arrive."

  • "Went Valentine's Day. This is the kind of restaurant that is nice to go to, but be prepared to overpay. Ambiance is outstanding and the decor will prompt conversation. The food is well prepared but not worth the price. I come to accept that what one pays for is the experience. So in conclusion I have had an experience that will be lasting for a very long time!"

  • "The food and overall atmosphere was good but the service could have been much better. Our party was left unattended on so many different occasions it was sad... we arrived early for our reservation and sat in the lounge as we waited (the bar area was crowded). Eventually we were offered cocktail menus and a young man said he would return to take our orders, he never returned. We were seated at our table on time and yet we waited for our waiter to arrive to take our drink order. Again, we sat and waited. I have been to Equus on a few different occasions and I have never experience service like this. We waited for drinks, had to ask for bread and had to ask for the check... one of the more disappointing hospitality experiences."

  • "Have been to Equus many times and enjoyed each experience. This Valentine's day was different. While the restaurant maintains its beautiful ambiance, the food was subpar. Hopefully, this was due only to the fact that is was a fixed holiday menu. Will be back."

  • "This was an absolutely outstanding choice for our Valentine's Day dinner. The food was excellent and the service was second to none. I don't want to sound as if I'm trying to push this restaurant on anyone but if you love great rating food and a nice serene environment; make this one of choices. *****"

  • "We went to Equus on Valentine's and it was a very romantic experience. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and the service is outstanding. The food was delicious and very well presented. It was a fixed menu that had seafood, beef, salad, and dessert. All the courses were properly prepared and seasoned and presented in a beautiful and enticing way. Our waiter could not be more attentive to us. The Castle is a special place to visit. I regret not having booked a room for that night. The renovation is wonderful."

  • "We went to Equus for Valentines and was just as enjoyable and special as the first time we went. The castle will always have a special place with us, since my husband proposed to me there, and we had our wedding there. It's the most romantic spot locally."

  • "Equus is truly one if the best dining experiences I have ever had! The Castle hotel sits on top of a hill, with the dining room overlooking the Hudson River. The view at sunset is amazing, topped only by the food and service. The meal was exquisite, both visually and in taste. The staff was on point and attentive without being intrusive. This will be a meal I will remember...I truly cannot wait to go back."

  • "I rarely write reviews, but I was blown away by Equus and felt it deserved a review so that others can delight in the experience. The food, service, furniture, ambiance--everything was outstanding! Equus is a great alternative to Blue Hill at Stone Barns. The multiple rooms are gorgeous, with beautiful, modern furniture that complements amazing historic details, like a boar's head carved into the stone of the wood-burning fireplace and sweeping views of the Hudson. This is perfect for a special occasion, birthday, or romantic dinner. It's also pleasantly quiet, because of its multiple rooms--not too quiet--but for once you don't have to yell to make yourself heard. Really I cannot say enough good things about this place! A hidden gem!"

  • "Reserved a table for two for 7 pm on a Saturday night. Was very disappointed that the host/hostess allowed a noisy 8 month old baby to be seated at the table next to us. Given the atmosphere and ambience Equus is trying to create, why would they allow infants in the dining area? Also, Equus offers a nice 5 course menu but fails to consult a sommelier for wine selections for each course. Otherwise, food was good. Service was great. Our waiter ended up running back and forth for wine samples to compliment the food since there were no suggestions on the menu."

  • "Many thanks to the chef , waiters, bussboys and the runner. Food is fantastic, waiters very knowledgeble about the food, chef is great and the somellier knows his wines. Great athmosfere. BTW when we left the car was waiting for us outside in front of the door. Great experience. And not to mention that was our third time dinning at Equus. THANKS. Aura and Luke"

  • "The food was decent but so overpriced. The service was at best fair. The drinks took forever to be served. Additionally we ordered a bottle of wine that was poured and was not finished. The waiter not once came by to pour the rest. I could not believe it. The food portions were tiny. All parties were still hungry at dinners end. $95 for a five (5) course meal. PLEASE! The appetizers were almost too small to be noticed. Two of the course meals were sorbet and dessert and both were paltry. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Ordered coffee and not once did the waiter come back to ask if we wanted more. I was trying to impress a client and instead I got depressed."

  • "New Year's dinners do not always reflect the true nature of a chef or restaurant but if Equus is any better than our New Year's Eve dinner they would be at 125%. Amazing flavors in every course."

  • "My husband and I celebrated Christmas Day at Equus, we really enjoyed the atmosphere, scenic view of the Hudson River, fabulous service and incredibly delicious food. The Prix Fix menu afforded a nicely balanced selection to choose from and dessert was incredibly decadent. The wine was also magnificent."

  • "This is a place to go to for the view of the Hudson River-- it is just spectacular.Menu is great but actual food did not live up to the 'high-end' ness of the place, nor the price. Main dish meat was cooked perfectly (e.g., nice and pink on the inside) but served barely tepid in temperature, so not satisfying. Dessert was by far the outstanding course. Wine pairing was odd to say the least-- had this many times before at other places and this is the first time that none of the pairings made much sense at all. And the vintages used were not that great, either.I had a special request which they handled spectacularly-- the senior service staff are wonderful and helped to make the occasion special despite the less than outstanding food."

  • "I have eaten at Equus many times. Every time is amazing. We started with a spicy shrimp tasting from the chef. The 5 course tasting menu included scallop, lobster, and wagyu beef done two ways. We shared the desserts and couldn't decided which one was best - but I suppose the chocolate wins out by a nose because it is chocolate! Equus has a capable wine list, and we went with the Caymus Special Select Cabernet Sauvignon. Just fantastic. The building feels historic and special as does the petite bar where we started the evening with a drink. If you've never been - you MUST GO! It can be expensive, but every time you go, it will become a special occasion. Enjoy!"

  • "Enjoyed a romantic night out with my husband to celebrate our anniversary. Equus had perfect the combination of ambience and attention. The staff was incredibly attentive to our needs and made several wonderful recommendations. The roaring fire and other special touches made the evening memorable. The presentation of each plate was original and unique. Absolutely loved the scallops, bass and beef duo! Very pricy but worth the experience."

  • "For something special in the way of ambiance, Equus can't be beat. The old time aristocratic feel of the 'castle' mansion is genuine and both beautiful and impressive. Food is excellent (had the seasonal fixed price menu). Only drawback - portions VERY small - too small considering price. Wish they would take note and change that !"

  • "Equus is a fantastic dining spot to take your spouse/love one for a romantic evening. The service is wonderful and very attentive. The ambience of the place is quiet and nostalgic, making the dining experience a pleasant one. The food was exquisite. We had the venison and fluke. Well prepared and flavorful. Earlier in the day, I popped the question to my long-time girlfrend (she said, yes!) and this was the conclusion to our full day. Well worth it. Note: Make reservations at least 2-3 weeks in advance!"

  • "It's a beautiful place. We ordered the 5 course meal and there was four if us. The portions very small. The lobster was like rubber. For the amount if money you pay the food should be spot on."
