Diner Reviews
  • "We had a table by the glass windows. It was perfect. Our server was amazing. She was personable and interactive but not overbearing. We felt she cared about our dining experience. We had the tasking menu with the wine pairing. Each course was excellent! This was our second time at Equinox and it will not be the last!"

  • "Expected more from this restaurant Food was ok Service good not great Limes in beverages were dried out. I wouldn't recommend going there"

  • "The five course vegan tasting menu with wine pairing was excellent. The quinoa had a wonderful smokiness and the sunchoke chowder was creamy and delicious. We were stuffed when we left."

  • "I had not dined at Equinox for nearly 6 years when my office was only a couple blocks away. We took out-of-town friends here on a recent Saturday evening and enjoyed delicious food. The kitchen has clearly been very well trained. The front of the house much less so. The staff was unclear on whether the bar tab could be transferred to the main tab. When our guests arrived, the young lady who first greeted us was absent and the person then at the front desk seemed to be unclear about our table. The person taking our menu selections was good, but the staff bring the food had no idea where each dish should be placed. We had to hand plates around the table. This is nearly unforgivable at this price level - luckily the food compensated."

  • "This Equinox should delight more frequently than twice a year. Delicious food, including yummy vegan options, and impeccable service won raves from these diners. The chef's vegan Sunday brunch at the Corcoran deserves praise too."

  • "Prior to arrival, I was not sure that Equinox would still meet their own fine standards. I'm pleased to say, that although there are certainly a few new minor issues, it is still one of the finest restaurants in town. The food was delicious, and the wine and attentiveness excellent (a great recommendation from Byron). Yummy scallops, lamb shank, pasta and salmon (sesame encrusted). Deserts were subtle and on the mark. Definitely worth return visits."

  • "Todd Gray is a name and you know the food will be excellent. But at this price point I want more. There is no blow you away inventiveness. The portions are so small that unless your on a serious diet and are looking for forced portion control this is going to leave you looking for something to eat after the meal: even if you have appetizer entree and dessert. The place is kind of out routinely priced. For a still pricey, but 1/3 less, there are dozens of places in downtown DC to get an fantastic dinner prepared by master chiefs. Try across the street at the redone Bombay club if your in this part of the city and you're looking for a little dining foodie magic."

  • "We had an early reservation. Upon our arrival the receptionist told us the staff was on a meeting? I assume they have to do it before the restaurant is opened to the public! The restaurant was literally empty and because of the we had 1 hour we just ordered the Entrees. We had to wait for our waiter who said we had plenty of time. Well, 45 min after we ordered we were finally served. My Striploin was very dry and the waiter blamed the delay on my friend who ordered his Striploin medium well. Very unprofessional and very rude! Not to mention that we had to eat very quickly. There was our first and last time at the Equinox!"

  • "I had the best scallops ever here! Two of us had the scallops and the third had the salmon. The salmon dish looked phenomenal and there were no complaints from anyone at the table. I will certainly be back."

  • "The staff was great. We got lost and had to call for directions, they were extremely helpful in getting us there. Even though the menu is not extensive, all the dishes we ordered were great.Crispy Duck Spring rolls were tasty, but Truffle Risotto Fritters melted in the mouth, so delicious. Mint cholcolate chip ice cream, worth the extra calories after that delicious dinner.I would go there again."

  • "We went there to try out the vegan and vegetarian food. I got the pasta dish and it was ok. I felt like I could make it at home. My husband does eat fish so opted for the fish which he said was very good. The risotto fritters were really good. We had ordered the mac and cheese but they forgot the order, which was ok as we had enough food. The entire meal was slightly ruined by the dessert. they put way too much chili powder in the chocolate syrup for the ice cream. We didn't realize there would be any and basically we were both gasping. It was really not good and not a good way to end the meal. This may have been our fault for not reading the menu well enough - though we both missed it if it was there."

  • "The menu had great meat and vegetarian options. The food was very good and had unique and interesting options. The panacotta dessert was terrific (we split a dessert because the soup and an entree portions were generous and filling) and hit the chocolate lover spot in us."

  • "Food excellent. Service confusing. We started w one waitress then there was a gap with no one showing interest and finally a waiter who ( we believe) tried to make up for the confusion. We ordered gougeres to snack on with our cocktail. They, while very delicious, arrived after we started our salad. And the salad was a very very long time coming."

  • "The hostess was rude & said that they were booked, so I could not get a reservation & would have to eat at the bar. I checked OpenTable & reservations were open for 2 from 7pm until 9pm. So clearly the hostess did not know her own restaurant's schedule. The food was meh! I have had better food at other restaurants that weren't so hyped. Todd Gray might have long ways to go before he can make his red fish less fishy in taste which clearly points to a lack of freshness and the duck breast was nothing out of the ordinary. There were 3 empty tables when we were seated at 8pm, that no one filled until 10pm when we left-yea so much for being "we're so packed" today."

  • "The salad took 15 minutes to arrive; dinner took 25 minutes after the salad was taken away; without being checked on or an apology in-between. Another 15 minutes after our dinner plates were cleared were we offered a dessert menu; and we actually had to grab another server to get our check. Ten minutes passed before Denise came back to pick up the check and then another 10 before we got the check back. There was not an apology or acknowledgement of these long waits, although another waiter working in the area did apologize, that is not acceptable. The only redeeming factor was the lamb shank that I ordered. The salad was bland and my wife's salmon was just okay. We got the pear stuff for dessert and that was also underwhelming."

  • "The food at Equinox on Feb. 14 was excellent, but the service was a St. Valentine's Day train wreck. They seated us 30 minutes late, didn't serve us any bread, mixed up our orders, and let 15-20 minutes go by between the time we would be finished with one course and the next course would be served. They didn't bring us an amuse bouche until I noticed another table getting theirs as we were finishing our third course. Over three hours after we entered the restaurant, we left it more than $300 poorer and feeling treated like we had been waited on at Bob and Edith's Diner. The next morning, I got an unsolocited text from "Ellen" asking for my email address so she could send me a note about our service. Still haven't received it 3 days later.."

  • "We went on Valentine's Day so there was a prix fixe dinner. The regular menu looks outstanding and it was highly recommended by a friend who is totally a foodie. The options were so unusual, hard decision. I had the salad, which was sooo bland. The cod was so salty. My boyfriend was equally unimpressed. I might give it another try one night to taste the regular menu."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The Valentine's menu with wine pairing was really quite exceptional and showed some real thought and creativity. We normally don't like to be constrained in our choices this way, but this was excellent. Pate and beer pairing...fabulous!"

  • "The wait staff experience was one of the worst experiences I have had in my 15 years of living in DC. After waiting over 30 minutes just to order, we waited another 40 minutes to receive our first course. We opted to do the 6 course and wine pairing and sat alone at the table for over 25 minutes without even being checked on. Our waiter was the worst I've ever experienced and in paying over $135 each for a dinner, could not believe we could be treated so poorly. I alerted the host of our issue and she tried to cover as best as she could but honestly it was one of the most ridiculous dining experiences I can recount. Our waiter serving us late and often incorrect dishes and confusing even what wines he should be serving us."

  • "We came to Equinox to celebrate a birthday and enjoyed the food and the service. We were a bit disappointed with the gougeres, which were drier than they should have been, but the bread was delightful and all of us thought our entrees were delicious. No special effort was made to recognize the birthday, although we had noted this on our reservation. Although we enjoyed the dinner, next time we will go back to celebrating at La Chaumiere, which is comparably priced but more of a special occasion feel."

  • "Sometimes it's nice to go out for a meal without completely ruining all of the New Years resolutions to eat healthy and maybe drop a few pounds. The Vegan Tasting Menu at Obelisk is perfect for the health conscious gourmet. Though neither of us in our party of two are Vegans, we very much appreciated the creative menu which scored high marks for flavor and presentation while providing a perfectly nutritious and satisfying dinner. The first course Vegan Chili provided the perfect welcome on a night when temperatures outside hovered near zero. Warm Belgian Endive Salad cleansed the palate and the pasta course was perfectly al dente. The Quinoa entree and the dessert courses were equally delicious, ensuring our return visit. Well done."

  • "I was at Equinox with my colleagues for lunch and had a wonderful experience. Decided to come in with my husband for a romantic dinner. We made an 8:15pm reservation on Opentable and when we arrived we were told that our table would be ready shortly. 20 min later they said the table was being set up.By the time we sat down it was 910pm. A busser came around and brought us water, the server came, gave us menus without any greeting and disappeared. At that time we were already extremely upset. We went to the manager looking for help but he said that the server should have been there. My husband got frustrated and we decided to leave. On our way out the manager neither apologize, or cared that we were leaving, nor offered any solution."

  • "I revisited Equinox during the each leaped out at you. We opted for the wine pairing and it was exquisite. In this most recent experience my companion, like me, is a foodie and a winner of national cooking competitions. He was extremely impressed and delighted with his meal. Our server at both seatings was Denise. I award the highest compliments for her demeanor, knowledge of the menu, and helpfulness. I will be back soon."

  • "I really like the decor of the restaurant. The service was excellent!! The food was very good. I just think they could use a tad bit more seasoning ...it lacks the wow factor but by no means is it bad its very good."

  • "Great place - I haven't been to the restaurant during it's normal operations (i.e. not during restaurant week) but it was great experience. I started it off with the house cabernet and it was delicious. The three course meal was overall good in general and it was nice to have the chef bring out complimentary tasters moments after we arrived. It's a restaurant by Todd Gray, which I'm sure most foodies know him (I'm not a foodie, so it was first time hearing his name). I recommend it if you're in the area."

  • "We dined during Winter Restaurant Week. Bartender was very nice and explained cocktails. We were seat within a reasonable window of our reservation. Complimentary coat check. Great service, knowlegable waiter but not pushy. He even replaced my coffee because he thought it was too cool. Food was very delicious. Thoughtful menu. Homemade pasta with rabbit confit cooked well and good portion size. Dessert was not as afterthought but just as intentionally created and served. Do not skimp on the experience and skip dessert!."

  • "We went for Restaurant Week. The food tasted good, but the service was slow. In their defense, it was RR so it was probably overwhelming. I got the white bean and truffle soup. It was so creamy and heavy that I got full for the main entree. The bbq shrimp was excellent. I wasn't a big fan of the donut dessert. It was too sweet for my taste."
    Dined on 1/17/2014
  • "Went for the restaurant week menu and was just not impressed. The best part of the dinner were the appetizers, and it pretty much went downhill from there. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't a good either, for example my date's fillet was completely chewy and overcooked despite him asking for it a medium rare. Both desserts what sure OK: chocolate mousse cake and the walnut cake were again just okay the sorbet that came with the walnut cake didn't really go with the cake at all. I'm not sure if the lackluster food was a result of restaurant week menu but since this was my first experience at the restaurant, and given my experience, I'm not likely to go back for the regular menu offerings."

  • "Went here only on account of restaurant week, never even knew it was next to the deli on the corner. They were not doing lunch for restaurant week, no problem, we were already there. The waiter who pushe gougeres and apps no less than three times and disappeared for the rest of service was both pushy and rude, and do yourself a favor and dont order the cobia, it came out cold and tasted very very fishy. The trout salad was a better pick, but neither were enough to make up for the lack of ambiance or service. I probably would have been happier spending an eighth of the money and going to the food trucks across the street"

  • "Was definitely worth it for restaurant week, especially with the wine pairing. Great food! But our dinner took 2.5 hours... They were really busy, so I understand a little bit, but it was only 3 courses and I was tired by the end! The hostesses and management looked frazzled when we got there. I wasn't terribly impressed with the environment in that way, and the waiter didn't look particularly happy to be there, but like I said, the food was delish!"

  • "fortunately, we tried this restaurant during Restaurant Week, and even at those prices felt it was too high for the quality of the food. We had pheasant from the standard menu (at 35 bucks), then the restaurant week menu, which included salad, BBQ shrimp and a triple mousse tort. All of it was "okay". The pheasant was okay. the shrimp was okay. the mousse was okay. Nothing jumped out at us as being special. The service was slow (which, given the number of staff walking around was surprising). we're not sure how this place has such a reputation for fine dining (other than it's location 2 blocks from the white house). all in all, it's "meh""
