The food at Equinox on Feb. 14 was
excellent, but the service was a St. Valentine's Day train wreck. They seated us 30 minutes late, didn't serve us any bread, mixed up our orders, and let 15-20 minutes go by between the time we would be finished with one course and the next course would be served. They didn't bring us an amuse bouche until I noticed another table getting theirs as we were finishing our third course. Over three hours after we entered the restaurant, we left it more than $300 poorer and feeling treated like we had been waited on at Bob and Edith's Diner. The next morning, I got an unsolocited text from "Ellen" asking for my email address so she could send me a note about our service. Still haven't received it 3 days later.."

We went on Valentine's Day so
there was a prix fixe dinner. The regular menu looks outstanding and it was highly recommended by a friend who is totally a foodie. The options were so unusual, hard decision. I had the salad, which was sooo bland. The cod was so salty. My boyfriend was equally unimpressed. I might give it another try one night to taste the regular menu."

The Valentine's menu with wine
pairing was really quite exceptional and showed some real thought and creativity. We normally don't like to be constrained in our choices this way, but this was excellent. Pate and beer pairing...fabulous!"

The wait staff experience was one
of the worst experiences I have had in my 15 years of living in DC. After waiting over 30 minutes just to order, we waited another 40 minutes to receive our first course. We opted to do the 6 course and wine pairing and sat alone at the table for over 25 minutes without even being checked on. Our waiter was the worst I've ever experienced and in paying over $135 each for a dinner, could not believe we could be treated so poorly. I alerted the host of our issue and she tried to cover as best as she could but honestly it was one of the most ridiculous dining experiences I can recount. Our waiter serving us late and often incorrect dishes and confusing even what wines he should be serving us."

We came to Equinox to celebrate a
birthday and enjoyed the food and the service. We were a bit disappointed with the gougeres, which were drier than they should have been, but the bread was delightful and all of us thought our entrees were delicious. No special effort was made to recognize the birthday, although we had noted this on our reservation. Although we enjoyed the dinner, next time we will go back to celebrating at La Chaumiere, which is comparably priced but more of a special occasion feel."

Sometimes it's nice to go out for
a meal without completely ruining all of the New Years resolutions to eat healthy and maybe drop a few pounds. The Vegan Tasting Menu at Obelisk is perfect for the health conscious gourmet. Though neither of us in our party of two are Vegans, we very much appreciated the creative menu which scored high marks for flavor and presentation while providing a perfectly nutritious and satisfying dinner. The first course Vegan Chili provided the perfect welcome on a night when temperatures outside hovered near zero. Warm Belgian Endive Salad cleansed the palate and the pasta course was perfectly al dente. The Quinoa entree and the dessert courses were equally delicious, ensuring our return visit. Well done."

I was at Equinox with my
colleagues for lunch and had a wonderful experience. Decided to come in with my husband for a romantic dinner. We made an 8:15pm reservation on Opentable and when we arrived we were told that our table would be ready shortly. 20 min later they said the table was being set up.By the time we sat down it was 910pm. A busser came around and brought us water, the server came, gave us menus without any greeting and disappeared. At that time we were already extremely upset. We went to the manager looking for help but he said that the server should have been there. My husband got frustrated and we decided to leave. On our way out the manager neither apologize, or cared that we were leaving, nor offered any solution."

I revisited Equinox during the
each leaped out at you. We opted for the wine pairing and it was exquisite. In this most recent experience my companion, like me, is a foodie and a winner of national cooking competitions. He was extremely impressed and delighted with his meal. Our server at both seatings was Denise. I award the highest compliments for her demeanor, knowledge of the menu, and helpfulness. I will be back soon."

I really like the decor of the
restaurant. The service was excellent!! The food was very good. I just think they could use a tad bit more seasoning ...it lacks the wow factor but by no means is it bad its very good."

We had a lovely meal, good
conversation and satisfying evening with friends."

Great place - I haven't been to
the restaurant during it's normal operations (i.e. not during restaurant week) but it was great experience. I started it off with the house cabernet and it was delicious. The three course meal was overall good in general and it was nice to have the chef bring out complimentary tasters moments after we arrived. It's a restaurant by Todd Gray, which I'm sure most foodies know him (I'm not a foodie, so it was first time hearing his name). I recommend it if you're in the area."

Everyone was so friendly and
helpful and tried very hard to make it a good dining experience plus the food was great!"

We dined during Winter Restaurant
Week. Bartender was very nice and explained cocktails. We were seat within a reasonable window of our reservation. Complimentary coat check. Great service, knowlegable waiter but not pushy. He even replaced my coffee because he thought it was too cool. Food was very delicious. Thoughtful menu. Homemade pasta with rabbit confit cooked well and good portion size. Dessert was not as afterthought but just as intentionally created and served. Do not skimp on the experience and skip dessert!."

We had a lovely dinner in theri
private dining section and were well taken care of. Great food and room full of interesting wines."

went for restaurant week with my
husband and another couple. i have no complaints. the restaurant is beautifully designed, the service was wonderful, and everything we ordered was just delicious. will definitely be coming back."
Dined on 1/18/2014
We went for Restaurant Week. The
food tasted good, but the service was slow. In their defense, it was RR so it was probably overwhelming. I got the white bean and truffle soup. It was so creamy and heavy that I got full for the main entree. The bbq shrimp was excellent. I wasn't a big fan of the donut dessert. It was too sweet for my taste."
Dined on 1/17/2014
Went for the restaurant week menu
and was just not impressed. The best part of the dinner were the appetizers, and it pretty much went downhill from there. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't a good either, for example my date's fillet was completely chewy and overcooked despite him asking for it a medium rare. Both desserts what sure OK: chocolate mousse cake and the walnut cake were again just okay the sorbet that came with the walnut cake didn't really go with the cake at all. I'm not sure if the lackluster food was a result of restaurant week menu but since this was my first experience at the restaurant, and given my experience, I'm not likely to go back for the regular menu offerings."
Dined on 1/17/2014
Went here only on account of
restaurant week, never even knew it was next to the deli on the corner. They were not doing lunch for restaurant week, no problem, we were already there. The waiter who pushe gougeres and apps no less than three times and disappeared for the rest of service was both pushy and rude, and do yourself a favor and dont order the cobia, it came out cold and tasted very very fishy. The trout salad was a better pick, but neither were enough to make up for the lack of ambiance or service. I probably would have been happier spending an eighth of the money and going to the food trucks across the street"

The meal was phenomenal! I'd go
back and tell my friends."
Dined on 1/15/2014
Was definitely worth it for
restaurant week, especially with the wine pairing. Great food! But our dinner took 2.5 hours... They were really busy, so I understand a little bit, but it was only 3 courses and I was tired by the end! The hostesses and management looked frazzled when we got there. I wasn't terribly impressed with the environment in that way, and the waiter didn't look particularly happy to be there, but like I said, the food was delish!"
Dined on 1/14/2014
fortunately, we tried this
restaurant during Restaurant Week, and even at those prices felt it was too high for the quality of the food. We had pheasant from the standard menu (at 35 bucks), then the restaurant week menu, which included salad, BBQ shrimp and a triple mousse tort. All of it was "okay". The pheasant was okay. the shrimp was okay. the mousse was okay. Nothing jumped out at us as being special. The service was slow (which, given the number of staff walking around was surprising). we're not sure how this place has such a reputation for fine dining (other than it's location 2 blocks from the white house). all in all, it's "meh""

Made this reservation through Open
Table based on the rating. I had never been to this restaurant or heard of it. Upon being greeted by the Randy Cole (I asked for his card when we left to get his name) the evening began. He treated us so well as did the waiter. Randy is a shining example of excellent service and I couldn't thank him more. Thanks for a wonderful evening, Paul Georg"

great place for a business lunch.
the risotto fritters were amazing. got the mushroom salad with the trout. trout was perfectly cooked and crispy and well seasoned. the salad was a little over dressed. nice to sit in the atrium, not too loud. service was a little spotty in the beginning but servers were respectful and patient throughout the service."
Dined on 12/20/2013
Let me start out saying the place
was maybe 40%full on a Saturday night. They have two choices of bubbles by the glass and they were out of the Cava now down to one choice. The tasting menu looked ok but the wine matching was poor. One of the wines was Canyon Road cab a poor choice. There was 30 minutes between the app and the first cource.. the chef did bring out a free app of the fritters, maybe the best thing of the night. My wifes fish dish was uninspired. My shrimp and pasta had just two large head on shrimp. The pasta had good flavor but the pasta was over cooked. When the chef came out to check on us I told him the pasta was over cooked and he apologized."
Dined on 12/28/2013
Food was excellent as always.
However, the option was a 3, 5, or 7 course fixed price dinner. Could not get any clear info on portion sizes from the waiter so we ordered the 3 course. Mistake. Very small portions. Probably designed for the 7 course dinner. A bit slow on service."
Dined on 12/31/2013
Somewhat disappointing experience
at an old fav. The server tried very hard, the kitchen struggled with the nut allergy. The trout was good but a tad dry. Probably best to avoid Sunday nights even if that is your birthday. Drinks were excellent. Just not up to previous experiences there."

Equinox can be counted on to
maintain a high level of quality, while also varying its menu with imaginative and flavorful new dishes. Their appetizers and desserts are zesty and different, the entrees are rich and satisfying. Meat, fish, or pasta, there is always something new worth trying."

We were looking for a special
restaurant to celebrate our 40th anniversary . It met and exceeded our expectations. We had the Chef's Taster menu. The apple/ chestnut soup was a smooth puree, poured over pieces of chestnuts. A soup to be remembered. The venison melted in your mouth. The servings were just right, not large and overwhelming. The waiter and servers were warm and friendly. Wonderful experience!"
Dined on 12/22/2013
Just superb. Equinox never fails
to dazzle -- this was a holiday lunch and my guests were just raving about their meals. Love the feel and the highly professional and never pushy service. Randy at the front desk (and everywhere) really knows how to take care of guests. And having Chef Todd Gray stop by tables is a true treat."

I had a wonderful experience at
Equinox for restaurant week in august 2013. I went for my birthday and it was great. Me and my party all ordered from the restaurant week menu. They also gave us a complementary appetizer and complementary champagne. I was very surprised to receive this special service especially since it was restaurant week and we all ordered from the restaurant week menu. The food was delicious. The salmon dish was so fresh and flavorful. I would love to go back. Equinox has a great atmosphere with exceptional food and service. Thanks."

Looked forward to this dining
experience but found it much less enjoyable than anticipated. Drinks were poured very sparingly the first time; the second round was at least 25% more generous and more to standard, thank goodness. Fabulous rice balls and gougere appetizers; outstanding apple soup and oyster starters; mediocre egg noodle pasta main course; and inedibly oversalted caultiflower. Dessert was three tablespoons of ice cream for $11. No attention was paid to the Open Table note that this was a birthday celebration. On the way out, the maitre'd asked us how the meal had been. We said, "Fine, with one exception." He said, "Oh yes, the cauliflower." Period. The end."

Be sure to listen to the
description of the seafood/fish of the day. You will be intrigued. We actually had the salmon and the cobia from the regular menu, and started with the granny Apple soup. The presentations were elegant, and the food was as delicious as it was beautiful. Also, get the gruyere macaroni and cheese side--you won't be sorry! Service was masterful--just attentive enough, not overwhelming. The coffee is wonderful, too. This is one of my new Washington, DC favorites!"

We wanted a special restaurant for
a weekend in WashingtonDC and this surpassed every hope. From the delightful woman who greeted us and found a special table, to the CHef who came to our table, it was wonderful"
Dined on 12/12/2013
The entre: the Gougeres were cold
and I think too big. I really think that this entre should has been at least a little warm. The main dish that I took was good: salmon and the one that my boyfriend took too. We enjoyed the wine that the waiter recommended for us. The mac and cheese with truffle was really tasty. We did not like the dessert the Yes S'Mores. We had chocolate ice cream with pimento and the combination of the restructured dessert was interesting... The room where we were at was super noisy, the people around us acted like they were alone and we could definitely hear their all conversation."
Dined on 12/9/2013
We ordered the "Warm Housemade
Gruyere Gougères". It tasted good but seemed a little doughy for us. Although, that may have been where the cheese was concentrated. For starters my friend ordered the "Curried Kabocha Butternut Squash Soup" and I ordered the "Agnolotti of Pumpkin and Housemade ricotta. The Agnolotti was delicious, but swimming in butter/oil, which was a little overpowering. My friend thought the soup was good. For the main entree I ordered the "Grilled Creekstone Farm Angus Beef Striploin". It was perfectly cooked (medium rare) but arrived cold. My friend ordered the "Bacon Wrapped Medallions of Cervena Venison". The first bite was a bit gamey for me, but it soon changed to a more mild flavor."

This is the first time Open Table
great ratings were a disappointment. Our waiter was inattentive; didn't tell us about the Oyster Bar which was our highlight. That staff person explained the two kinds of oysters, was attentive and enjoyable to talk with. The bloody mary oyster slider was superb. The bread was superb. The rest was less than so so. Each of the 3 of us had something different in the 3 course meal so we could try more items. The food was luke warm rather than hot, and tasteless. We were given a table near the outside door and it was breezy and cold. People, including staff, kept trying to open the door (some did) which made it even worse. We will not be back."

I mentioned on my opentable
reservation that we were coming to Equinox to celebrate a birthday - they could not have been more gracious with service! The food was excellent, but the complimentary glasses of moscato and the handwritten note from the owner was just exceptional and unexpected. We had a great time!!"

A very interesting menu, evrything
was well-prepared. All three of us especially loved the brussel sprouts side dish."

One of the best dining experiences
since moving to Washington, DC!"

This was our second time dining at
Equinox and both experiences were fantastic. We tried the new vegan tasting menu. Loved each and every dish that was served. Each dish was beautifully flavored and rich, yet not too heavy. The risotto had a wonderful smoky flavor. The carrot gnocchi with sautéed mushrooms were bathed in a lovely red wine sauce. The beet salad was light and zesty. The desert was delicious - a rich, dense chocolate/avocado torte with a sour cherry sorbet and berry sauce. Service was impeccable. Will definitely go back again."
