We had a lovely time at Epoch. It
was a very slow night (Tuesday) possibly due to school vacation, but we were treated extremely well by the server as well as the host/manager. Our son said that it was very possibly the best steak au poivre that he'd ever had and that seems to be his go-to meal when dining out. The scallops with cherries was unique and tasty. My only suggestion would be to enlarge the salad portion a bit, the panzanella was tasty but tiny. Yum...highly recommended."

We waited quite awhile to be
greeted, as the host stand was empty;then our server could not find our reservation but said "I'll seat you anyway". Vegetable risotto was tasty, but rice was mushy. I left most of it on my plate. Server never asked if we were happy with our main courses, and offered to wrap up the risotto for me. When I declined, she did not ask if it had been to my liking. Restaurant was a bit noisy due to a wedding reception, but not unbearable."

This was my fourth visit, and I
was disappointed. I had to summon the maître d to find my server. The service was spotty throughout. My tuna was over spiced and the vegetables too tough to chew. The bread presentation was skimpy. Sad to see such a reversal in a previously decent restaurant."

This was my 2nd time dining at
Epoch. Both times have been since they changed chefs and from what I understand the change is for the better. I certainly did not have any real complaints. Our server, Scott, was delightful; a real gem. The time between courses was a little slow, but I don't believe it was his fault. I like that you can get many of the salads and meals in half portions. I also like that you can buy a 3 oz or 6 oz glass of wine. Good if you just wanted to try a wine without committing. The first time here I had the winter vegetable risotto, which was really yummy. I would have had it again, but felt I should try something new. My husband and I shared a Delmonico steak for 2 and it was quite good. Yes, I would go back."

If you are in the Exeter, NH area,
Epoch is an excellent place to have a nice dinner with good atmosphere."

We went for Thanksgiving Dinner
with a reservation for 4:00 PM, and were told before being seated that they ran out of Turkey (on Turkey Day! ! ! !) Need I say more? We ordered a la carte, but were underwhelmed by the inattentive wait staff and slow service. As guests, we should not need to feel like an afterthought."
Dined on 11/28/2013
The food was great and I recommend
the dining room. However, they have one of the slowest bar tenders I have ever seen. We were asked, after about 5 minutes of sitting dead center of bar, if we had been helped. After saying no, the bar tender turned around and worked on something else. Another couple came and sat next to is and after about 10 minutes got up and left. I would recommend only going for the sit down dining."

Our party of 4 enjoyed the entire
meal, service and lovely setting. A bit pricey but worth every penny."
Dined on 2/8/2014
Two of the party had breakfast
items: stuffed French toast on Brioche bread with real maple syrup and Crab cakes with poached eggs on English Muffins with home fries and fruit. A third guest had an open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and mornay sauce. Looked amazing. All food was well-received and delicious."

This was our second experience
dining here. This time it was very crowded but the new manager was very accommodating and made our experience very enjoyable. We will definitely dine here again and recommend it to our friends. Thank you so much!"

Sunday brunch was very nice. Good
food, great coffee, and a very pleasant dining room."

We have been here several times
before, usally it's great, we went on New Year's eve for dinner and seemed to wait a very long time for everything, we were seated at 7:45 and finished dinner at 10:00. We sat for a long time before the waitress took our drink orders, then salad came before the bread or the bottle of wine we ordered, we were nearly done with the salad before we got our wine, which they had to substitute because they ran out of what we ordered. They did remove the desert charge from the menu to appoligize for the long waits. Food was excellent, I ordered the oxtail gnochi and my wife ordered tornados De Beouf, also excellent. I had the dessert collecton which had a nice assortment of deserts all very good."

Last visit to Epoch was over a
year ago - had a wonderful meal back then. Not so this time. Food was average, portions were small and prices high relative to the value received. Service, while competent, was slow. Ambiance is great, but doesn't make up for the aforementioned shortcomings. Too many good restaurants in the area to warrant going back to Epoch."
Dined on 11/30/2013
We took our parents out for
Thankgsgiving brunch and it was a disaster. They had no turkey - seriously? No cranbury sauce either. They didn't even have the manners to apologize or mention it. When asked, they admitted, they ran out before we were sat. Our table was in a side room that was en masse in a bad way. We would never return for the holiday which is a shame since we will need to do this again. We only recommend for a cozy night at the bar. If this had been my first experience I would not have come back."
Dined on 11/28/2013
One statement: Restaurant ran out
of Turkey during Thanksgiving Buffet. Rest of food and bar drinks were just OK........ Probably will not be attending Epoch again as it was very expensive and no where's near what we expected based on their reputation."
Dined on 11/28/2013
Service was impeccable. Food is
excellent and will return soon. Great find in a sleepy little town!"

4th visit - 1st time was awesome -
was when they 1st opened. 2nd time was buffet - mother's day or easter - very good 3rd time was very good as well 4th time will be last food was ok at best and very surprised at lack of dessert selection service was very bad waiter did not clear empty plates - told us to "flag me down" when plates needed to be cleared had to find him to order milk and coffee coffee was very old, and was only half cup will not be back"
Dined on 11/28/2013
We attended the Thanksgiving
brunch. Our res was 4:15, and I was assured they would continue seating guests until 5. But at 4:15 they had already run out of turkey. I got lucky and received one of the last pieces of prime rib. Other guests who arrived at 4:30 didn't even get that. There was plenty of food left on the buffet table. So if you like having salad, potatoes, vegetables and some institutional ham slices on Thanksgiving you're all set. The food quality was at best medium - at $40 I think it was over priced. Advice - skip the buffets at Epoch. I don't know what their menu is like, but after this experience I'm probably not going back to find out."
Dined on 11/28/2013
Everything was perfect except the
main dish always seem to take a very long time to arrive at the table. Not the first time."

We went during Portmouth
Restaurant Week to give it a try. A special menu offered but they are items on the regular menu. Started with PEI mussels - fantastic. The salad however was rather plain. Entree of mushroom ravioli were excellent. Came with fresh peas and cream sauce. The other entree was a brick chicken. I tasted it and chicken was moist. My wife thought it and the accompanying apple stuffing were very good. Dessert was a wild blueberry sorbet that was billed as having a shortcake but was just 2 scoops of the sorbet. Still was very good with the berry flavor very distinct. The other dessert was a chocolate terra cotta. While it is very nice and worth a return visit it probably won't be a frequent place to go."
Dined on 11/9/2013
We frequent Epoch every few months
and usually have a good experience so we thought we would try them out for restaurant week. We were disappointed in the quality of the food for sure. I think they took on too much with having a wedding going on, participating in restaurant week and having a large party in a private function room. The cheese plate was very skimpy, beet salad had a very bitter taste and the desserts were not edible and we retuned them to the kitchen (panna cotta looked like a scoop of chocolate pudding plopped on a plate and the flourless chocolate cake tasted like burnt plastic). What a bummer!"
Dined on 11/9/2013
I am five months pregnant and have
been craving duck for weeks. I found their menu online and it had duck! Although it came with a pricey tab, double what my husband and I usually pay for dinner, it was just what I needed. More menu options would have been nice for my husband, but he liked his meal. The dessert was delicious, but we were so full we couldn't finish it. Be sure to reserve your table, they were turning people away all night due to a party they had coming in."
Dined on 11/9/2013
The restaurant week menu was a
good value. However, it should be criminal to harvest mussels as small as the ones served. The decor is strange and gaudy. The service is slow, and the hostess is disinterested. Won't ever go back, because there are so many excellent restaurants in the area."
Dined on 11/7/2013
Most hotel restaurants are over
price and over rated. I've put off going to Epoch for almost 2 years for that exact reason. Last week we decided to "bite the bullet" and check it out. First, I was surprised by the size of the restaurant and bar area. Clean, friendly and unpretentious. We were greeted quickly and sat at a nice table towards the back of the room. Wine list was ample, nothing special, good selection of beers and cocktails as well. Salads were very good. My wife had Salmon and I had the Veal Porterhouse special. We were both very happy with our choices. The veal was cooked to perfection and wasn't over sauced or under/over seasoned as is usually the case. The salmon was beautifully cooked and moist. We will return!"
Dined on 11/1/2013
New fall menu is welcome;
reasonable mix of meat, fish & vegetarian choices. Steak au poivre & veal chops were excellent quality & cooked just right (i.e. as ordered). As always at Epoch they too heavy on the salt . Vegetables with entrees were good but far too few. Amounts could easily be doubled and even then wouldn't approach a proper serving size. We had questions about bottles of wine but they couldn't find anyone who really knew anything about the wines(i.e. could only speak about wines in general). On a Saturday night not to have a knowledgeable wine person in the house? Really? Our waitress was pleasant but disappeared for long periods of time - this happens every time we've been to Epoch. Where do they go?"
Dined on 11/3/2013
The restaurant lacks the ambiance
of days ago. The chicken was a bit on the dry side and the tournadoes were not very tender. It was a disappointment to half of our group."
Dined on 10/27/2013
After a 45 minute wait. Crab
cakes, salad and chowder were good but top sirloin was ruined overcooked and tough. Server started clearing before everyone in our party had finished eating."
Dined on 10/12/2013
The chef seems to have some
on-nights and off-nights, but the food here has improved and there's always something good that comes out of the kitchen (I mean, at least one superior dish out of four: two appetizers and two main courses, never to be called entrées, of course). And the room is nicely laid out and conversation thereby unaffected by noise of any kind. So the only real complaint might be that when one walks up to the reservation desk, there has never been a warm greeting. Not once has anyone ever said anything approaching, "Welcome," or, "Nice to see you" or anything else. There's usually a kind of grunt and then a walk into the pretty room (sans conversation). Let people know you're glad to see them--you may see them again."
Dined on 9/30/2013
The food was delicious, but the
service was terrible. We waited at least 20 minutes to get out drinks from the bar and towards the end of our meal, our waitress was nowhere to be found. The dinner was expensive and would have been worth it if our server was more consistent."
Dined on 9/21/2013
Dined at this restaurant for the
first time and were pleasantly surprised by the contemporary menu. On most dishes half portions are offered which we appreciated the most since it allows you to have several courses without getting full already after the entree. Tables are far enough apart to have some privacy and keep the noise level down. The food overall was very good and seasoned well. The only slightly negative part was the very friendly but rather slow waiter. He never refilled our wines and could not remember what the specials came with. Overall a very nice and comfortable restaurant right in town we will go back to. It was already too cold for patio dining but we definitely will do this next time."
Dined on 9/19/2013
In an area with a lot of
good-to-excellent restaurants, Epoch stood out to all five of us as head and shoulders above the rest. The service is very attentive without being overpowering; it's the first place I've been to in years where they replace your used silver between courses without being asked to. Food was beautifully prepared, as we're drinks. Well worth going out of your way for, and the inn itself would be a lovely weekend destination."
Dined on 9/14/2013
An excellent fine dining
restaurant. The menu utilized foods from local farms and fish mongers. Everything was fresh and delicious. The portions were larger than expected and the service fantastic. This restaurant will be one of our favorites."
Dined on 8/18/2013
Great apps and service.
Suprisingly very quiet for a Saturday night."
Dined on 7/13/2013
Great menu, execution and
presentation. A pleasant atmosphere and a well thought out wine list, sadly, the level of service and lack of training were very disappointing considering the price point, location and reputation of the Inn."
Dined on 7/7/2013
The service can not be any better.
The food is also great, but the menue is very limited. Also, do not go there hungry. The portions are extra small. You need magnifying glasses to see your food. Once you find it, It is tasty, by no means the best or a five star anything except service."
Dined on 7/2/2013
Enjoyed the chicken with chicken
livers, though my wife's steak au poivre was dry and tasteless (very little pepperiness; no zing of the requisite armagnac). Biggest problem was with the service; our server knew nothing about the draft beers and, worse, almost nothing about the food (when someone at the next table asked her about one of the dishes, she said she would have to go ask in the kitchen). There was also over a half-hour wait between appetizer and main course (the restaurant was busier than usual, and there were many servers, so the problem must have been with the kitchen; at one point, not a single table we could see had anything more than bread). (One funny moment: a customer asked if the pork belly dish contained any pork.)"
Dined on 6/8/2013
...than last time, when the food
was atrocious. Wonder if it's a coincidence that the chef then has now been replaced (by Zachary Martineau). What was nice about the main-course chicken (and only chicken on the menu) was that it was surrounded by chicken livers. Some restaurants would not have the courage to serve chicken livers to diners who want to eat chicken (and I hope no one said, "Hold the chicken livers," which were very good). It took forever to get the check settled. Someone should tell servers to scan the room as they walk through it; it's frustrating to want the attention of someone who's always looking at the floor. And servers in a room that serves draft beer (with funny names) should be able to describe each beer."
Dined on 5/23/2013
We had a very good brunch. The
poached eggs were done to perfection. The service was very slow. There was a private party in the next room. However, the main dining room was very quiet so I was surprised that the food took so long to arrive. They were also very slow to bring the check. But overall it was a very good meal."
Dined on 5/19/2013
We used to live in Kingston (now
Atlanta) and ate at the Epoch on many occasions...brunch and dinner. I can say that they have definitely stepped up their game. Our dinner was leaps and bounds above what we have had before. Starters of mussels, blue point oysters, and a wild berry salad were all great. To me, the sign of good mussels is do I want more bread to sop up the broth? I had to refrain from asking for more. Our main courses, lamb medallions, salmon, and chicken were all done perfectly. My pescatarian wife is very specific about her salmon being almost sashimi and they nailed it. The Epoch has become a hands above local restaurant."
Dined on 5/17/2013
We were disappointed in the
service. We had made reservations for 10:00am and when we got there at 10:00, they said we would have to wait 10 minutes. There were no people sitting at the tables. The restaurant wasn't ready. We got seated and then other tables were waited on before we were and we had been there first. We had to ask for someone to bring us coffee, no one came around to ask us if we wanted anything to drink. Then when we got our coffee, we had no spoons."
