A word from Engine Co. No. 28
Housed in a beautifully restored 1912 firehouse, Engine Co. No. 28 has been putting out appetite fires since 1989 with classic American dishes inspired by the regional cooking of firehouses across the country.

The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, New York Steak, Southern-style pan-fried chicken, crab cakes, Cobb salad, and Firehouse chili.

The weekly chef “specials” feature fresh grilled fish such as salmon, halibut and seasonal vegetables. Daily soups include corn chowder, chicken tortilla lime, tomato basil, broccoli and many other rotating favorites.

The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, white linen tables, granite bar and original brass fire pole - housed in a restored 1912 Los Angeles firehouse.

  • "Walking in the door the restaurant was empty. The high ceilings covered in tacky bright silver accentuated the empty environment and coupled with dim lighting the restaurant was rather depressing. Upon being seated the table was slanted and the upholstery tired. The service on the other hand was prompt, courteous, and helpful. As for the food the ribs were ok, but nothing phenomenal. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp and loved it. With an interior facelift the restaurant could be a nice spit. But as of now I wouldn't head there again."

  • "Great Food. The Servers were friendly, attentive and accommodated our schedule (to get to the theatre in time). Love the Engine Co. 28 shuttle to and from the Ahmanson!!! The special touch was the service from the valet who took our "doggy bags" from dinner and placed them in our cars while we were at the theatre. It was so nice not to have to carry our leftover food to the theatre. At the end of the evening, the shuttle was right there to pick us up.. When our car was driven in from the valet, the doggy bags were right there in the car! Many thanks for a great dinner and service from the restaurant staff and valets!"

  • "The best part of the experience is having the valet park my car in their structure and then riding the free (generous tips appreciated) to any of the local venues, e.g., Staples Center, Nokia Theatre, Orpheum Theatre, etc. When the show is over a simple call results in the shuttle appearing relatively quickly!"

  • "I've been wanting to eat here for quite some time, but have always chosen other downtown restaurants over this one. Finally we went in over the weekend, for dinner. Everything about it was just fine- nothing special, nothing to entice me to come back. The service was average; she wasn't nice, wasn't rude, she was ok. The food was bland, nothing special- no interesting cocktails either. The decor was ok, it kind of reminded me of an old Denny's- I expected it to be really cool since its in an old fire station, but no- low-end office carpeting, 1990s tables & booths, etc. Nobody was really there either and this should have been a busy weekend evening..."

  • "I've been coming to Engine Co. No. 28 about 6 years now. Haven't been in awhile, but will be back again soon. Beyond the historic and authentic early 20th century firehouse ambience, the warm and skillful waitpersons and staff were exceptional, and the food (for me, roasted Brussels sprouts, macaroni & cheese, and of course Shepherd's Pie in honor of St. Pat's since it was 3/17) was indeed upscale comfort, enjoyed accompanied by a very good and not overpriced California Cab from a selection that although not large, offers a good range for appropriate pairing. It was a pleasant reunion for me and my guests. Well done!"

  • "We took a chance on this restaurant being out of towners just looking for a warm, cozy meal. We got more than we asked for and reasonably priced. Each server had favorites that they shared and reviewed as if we were old friends - and the food was great! But the service made us feel like we came every night. Thank you for a perfect ending of a stay that was getting old. You made our last night memorable!"

  • "This was always a go to dependable place - good food, good service. Food has gone a bit downhill but more importantly the service is extremely disappointing. Our waiter acted like he was doing us a huge favor serving us. On a number of occasions we had to chase him down to get his attention. Even though we said we were going to the theatre and they tout their shuttle to the Music Center, he did not take one ounce of care to assure our food, bill or the shuttle were accomodated. This is the second time we had such an experience here, or I would not be writing this review. First time I thought it was an exception. Now I won't come back."

  • "A friend raved about the meatloaf. It was not good - just like ordinary meatloaf as always. dry, bland, tasteless and sauce didn't help. At first seated four of us in a tiny both so were practically on top of each other, but fortunately hostess recognized the problem and moved us to more comfortable. EXTREMELY NOISY!"

  • "We had a good meal at the Engine Company before going to a concert. We went early at 5:30PM on a Saturday and it was not busy, but definitely picked up as we were leaving at around 7PM. The pan fired chicken I had was fair, however the specials (ribs and sole) were very good. The lemon meringue pie and banana desert were both very good. My only criticism is that the restaurant felt a little worn."

  • "The happy hour available at the bar only looked really good with its food and drink specials. However, I came during DineLA and enjoyed the lamb shank. It was super tender and the appetizer of ribs was more than enough to wet my appetite. Still I parked 3 blocks away because we were in DTLA and valet was $10. I feel as though parking should be validated for two hours or even 90 minutes if you spend at least $50. But maybe that's just me."

  • "Tried this place during DineLA restaurant week. I liked the food and looking around at all the artifacts. My reservation was for 11:30 and it wasn't too crowded at the time. We hardly saw our server after she took our order. She only checked on us once when we barely got our food. She was covering a table across from us and had checked on them when they were done, but she didn't even bother to turn around and check on us. Another waitstaff took our plates away to box up for us. She took a while after our plates were cleared to come by with our check. When she did finally come up to see if we wanted dessert, we only had time left to deal with the check so we could go back to work. I get that there was a lunch rush, but service was lacking."

  • "I did lunch on Saturday with my family (6 of us), my first visit. In the entire restaurant there were possibly 3 other tables with people so the restaurant was definitely not full. Service started off great, but it seems once we had placed our orders, the waiter kinda disappeared....don't know if it was because they were understaffed or what. Food was awesome, came out in great time, etc....but to do refills on our beverages, having someone checking up on us, well....that was lacking....I even had to hunt down the waiter in order to get our bill."

  • "It was a night out with the girls where we wanted to try a different venue. We all had a great time and were pleasantly surprised at how we all liked the atmosphere and food. Service is great and the hostess was very friendly and helpful. The bar area had a number of customers and the energy level was high. Definitely not a quite romantic spot. Loved the novelty of the building and it's original design and decor."

Service are so slow that we can't even find anyone while the restaurant was not that busy at all. We regret to order dessert, it took another 30 minutes to come for a pre-made dessert."

  • "I have been to Engine Co. No. 28 on many occasions, though first time making reservations through OpenTable. Boy, were we disappointed. We were seated quickly enough, however, manager who took order got one order wrong and then let a busboy bring the correct plate to us. Both my secretary and I ordered the same thing and when the corrected order came back the portion was about half and looked like it had just been sloppily put on the plate. The bread was cheap and tasted like cardboard. The lunch was in celebration of her birthday so we ordered some lattes and again a busboy brought out a small cupcake with a candle. We each took one bite and no more. A Hostess Cupcake would have tasted better. After being informed, no remedy provided."

  • "We went for dinner last night. There were four of us and we ordered four (4) beers, four (4) salads, three (3) burgers, and one (1) rib special. The salads were nothing special, the burgers were awesome, the ribs were terrible, and the bill was $200 before tip. Even in downtown LA, $50 should get you more than one beer, some iceberg and bluecheese, and a burger."

  • "What a fabulous place! Downtown, wonderful ambience in an old firehouse. High-backed booths for privacy and and outstanding menu with such a variety of options. We started with the cream of beet soup and a beet salad (manchego cheese and surprise slices of spiced pear). Entrees were fish and chips and the special panko crusted filet of sole. Had a lovely bottle of sauvignon blanc. The service was friendly and impeccable. And the prices were so reasonable. Enjoy!"

Whether you are dining out before the theatre or meeting a friend for lunch or having a drink after work, Engine company 28 can always be counted upon to offer delicious American food and the best of service, They are known for their meatloaf which is a teeny bit on the spicy side, but their menu offers so much more - fish, chicken, pasta , salad, sandwiches, burgers, steaks - all delicious. All around, this restaurant is a great choice."

  • "Didnt seem busy for Fri. night. Ok wine / cocktail menu. Our server pushed the O Bucco and gave the falling off the bone description as a special at 18.00. I asked her re. the cheap price because it is 4$ less than their house specialty .She said that they bought a lot of the veal shank so it is less. Me and my wife tried the O Bucco and realized why it was so much less than the meatloaf.The Bucco was dry and I guess overcooked or not cooked properly.Worst O Bucco ever. I asked for more of the sauce to minimize the dry meat and that helped a bit.The veggies were good and the onion stack appetizer was the highlight of the meal .Sons meatloaf was ok.Other sons burger was ok. Lemon Merangue pie was good .Server was nice. This place wont last!"

  • "Had resrvs for 8:15pm, took 15 min to get seated, which wasn't an issue. The issue was we had to ask, and the table was already ready for a while. The maitre d' seated us with only the fixed menu and immediately left, leaving us wondering if that was our only option. It took 10 mins before we could get someone's attention to ask for regular menus, which we got only one. Another 10 mins before getting a 2nd one & finally ordered at 9pm. The Ahi tuna salad had a great dressing, but the tuna didn't seem sushi grade and had a bit too much pepper for my tastes. Otherwise, it's a nice place with ambiance & historic feel."

Food was only fair. It seemed like the restaurant has been there too long and the staff is uninspired. The only real bright spot was the free ice cream sundaes that came with the kids' meals. No return trip here."

  • "For some reason I had thought this place was super swanky. So my Mom and I walked in, all dressed up…. and it's fit for families and business lunches. So we were kind of let down on that end. But then… the food came. The food was incredible. I had the filet mignon and it was one of the best I've had. So: amazing food, super casual atmosphere. My Manhattan (cocktail) was good too."
