A word from Engine Co. No. 28
Housed in a beautifully restored 1912 firehouse, Engine Co. No. 28 has been putting out appetite fires since 1989 with classic American dishes inspired by the regional cooking of firehouses across the country.

The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, New York Steak, Southern-style pan-fried chicken, crab cakes, Cobb salad, and Firehouse chili.

The weekly chef “specials” feature fresh grilled fish such as salmon, halibut and seasonal vegetables. Daily soups include corn chowder, chicken tortilla lime, tomato basil, broccoli and many other rotating favorites.

The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, white linen tables, granite bar and original brass fire pole - housed in a restored 1912 Los Angeles firehouse.

  • "We were there on a Sunday for brunch/lunch and may have been the only customers there, at least for a while. Our server was excellent as were the bloody mary's. The food was just OK - tasty, but nothing spectacular. Omelets were a little overdone, although we definitely appreciated the choice of fruit (mango and banana) served on the side - nice change from the typical orange or melon slice. The room is rather dark - fine during the evening, but a little depressing on a beautiful weekend day."

  • "We gave the deliciously fresh seared shrimp cocktail. The cocktail sauce was flavor full chunky with diced tomatoes and avacado. I had one of the best batter on my fish and chips there. The only thing is the dim fluorescent colored lighting. They need to go to Ikea and get some low voltage strung across the room."

  • "The service was astoundingly slow, then my order came out wrong. I had asked for the salad dressing on the side and hold the red onions, but the red onlions came on the side and my salmon salad was slathered in dressing - couldn't taste the greens it was so over poering. The only remedy the waitress offered was to bring out a side salad with no dressing. I won't eat here again!"

  • "The menu fare is adequate, but plain and predictable. They have a VERY limited number of spirits for drink choices. We had to make alternate drink choices for our alcoholic beverages because they did not have the brands that we prefer. The alcoholic beverages tasted watered down."

  • "While the food was good they appeared to have run out of a few items very early in service (I was there at 5:30pm on a Saturday) and they were already saying that they only had a few special items left and were totally out of two items off the regular menu. The place was not busy by any means either. Service from the wait staff and hostess was fair at best, however, the food runners and bussers provided outstanding service. This is an okay place to grab a bite to eat before a show at the Music Center or Disney Hall but it's just going to be that, a bite to eat."

  • "Wait staff more attentive than most restaurants downtown. Refill on my iced tea was offered even before I received the original glass, which was somewhat amusing. Waiter checked on us a number of times. The space (converted firehouse with beautiful tin ceiling detail, polished wood and booths) makes for an upscale but warm and friendly dining ambience. I had wished only that the attention to detail had extended to my salad with steak. Several of the slices were gristly so I had to cut off portions. Both salad and steak were nicely flavorful, however. I'd attribute this to a fairly busy kitchen. My companion said signature meatloaf was quite good though not the best. We shared (and left not a morsel) of an excellent Chocolate Lava Cake."

  • "Unique setting and great comfort food. I did not find out until it was time to order dessert that they have a chocolate lava cake that takes 20 minutes to prepare. Because we were short on time, it will be something to order next time when I am ordering my dinner."

  • "I have eaten lunch at Engine Co #28 frequently, but this is the first time in many years that I've had dinner there. It is less crowded (mid-week) than at lunch, and the food is still excellent. They have a good variety on the menu, although it is not extensive. My companion had the braised ribs special and I had the Dover sole special, and we found both to be quite good. I appreciate that they have shuttle service to and from the Music Center, which we used. "

  • "My friends and I had reservations this past Sunday @ 4pm. When we arrived there is NO available parking. No public parking lot, no street parking, nothing!! When I asked the hostess about valet parking (because they usually have it because there's no parking), the hostess stated their valet service begins @ 5pm. But when I said " but you're open from 11am to 10pm on Sundays so where are customers supposed to park before 5pm?" She had no response. My friends & I drove around downtown LA for 15-20 minutes before finding parking. We ultimately parked and walked 4 blocks back to the restaurant!! Unacceptable! Overall great food but unless you dine after 5pm be prepared to waste your time driving around downtown LA to find parking. "

  • "Having been to Engine Company many times over the years, I have noticed a steady, slow decline in the restaurant. We ordered an appetizer of crab cakes which were okay, but nothing special. The Mexican chicken salad I ordered had very tough chicken and the dressing was bland. Bread was not brought to the table until asked for and then it was stale, not what they used to serve. The server did not even bother to ask if we wanted to order coffee or dessert, just brought the check when we asked for it. We were going to take the shuttle to the music center, she said she would tell the driver; after waiting outside for several minutes we just got our car from the valet, since the shuttle driver did not come out. Won't be going back. "

  • "From our hangout-time in the bar to an amazing meal, Engine Co. No. 28 is my go-to for a first night in LA. I came with a varied group of business associates, and a great time was had by all. Special kudos go to Jessica in the bar (a beauty with game, she makes best martini in LA!). She got us off on the right start, and even if the food wasn't amazing she alone would be a reason to return."

  • "I met 2 friends here for dinner the other night. I have typically gone to Engine Co 28 for lunch. I found that the dinner menu is a little on the pricey side. One person in our party ordered a glass of wine, other than that there was no alcohol. We ordered 2 deserts that we split among the 3 of us and we all had coffee. Total price for the meal with tip was $165 or $55 per person. My salmon was good but not the best I've ever had. Dessert (warm chocolate lava cake served with strawberries and whipped cream on the side) was amazing. I would even go so far as to say memorable. The crème brulee was also very good. Service was excellent. "

  • "The food was excellent as usual. I think we just had a bad server. She did not write down our order and she should have since there were only two parties and she got both orders wrong. When we ordered we were the first persons in her station but as she indicated, she was just so used to ordering our items in another way that she simply forgot. Hmmm... I'll go back as the food was really good once we finally received it. And, we had plenty of time to eat bread and talk business."

  • "Walking in the door the restaurant was empty. The high ceilings covered in tacky bright silver accentuated the empty environment and coupled with dim lighting the restaurant was rather depressing. Upon being seated the table was slanted and the upholstery tired. The service on the other hand was prompt, courteous, and helpful. As for the food the ribs were ok, but nothing phenomenal. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp and loved it. With an interior facelift the restaurant could be a nice spit. But as of now I wouldn't head there again."

  • "The best part of the experience is having the valet park my car in their structure and then riding the free (generous tips appreciated) to any of the local venues, e.g., Staples Center, Nokia Theatre, Orpheum Theatre, etc. When the show is over a simple call results in the shuttle appearing relatively quickly!"

  • "I've been wanting to eat here for quite some time, but have always chosen other downtown restaurants over this one. Finally we went in over the weekend, for dinner. Everything about it was just fine- nothing special, nothing to entice me to come back. The service was average; she wasn't nice, wasn't rude, she was ok. The food was bland, nothing special- no interesting cocktails either. The decor was ok, it kind of reminded me of an old Denny's- I expected it to be really cool since its in an old fire station, but no- low-end office carpeting, 1990s tables & booths, etc. Nobody was really there either and this should have been a busy weekend evening..."

  • "Great Food. The Servers were friendly, attentive and accommodated our schedule (to get to the theatre in time). Love the Engine Co. 28 shuttle to and from the Ahmanson!!! The special touch was the service from the valet who took our "doggy bags" from dinner and placed them in our cars while we were at the theatre. It was so nice not to have to carry our leftover food to the theatre. At the end of the evening, the shuttle was right there to pick us up.. When our car was driven in from the valet, the doggy bags were right there in the car! Many thanks for a great dinner and service from the restaurant staff and valets!"

  • "I've been coming to Engine Co. No. 28 about 6 years now. Haven't been in awhile, but will be back again soon. Beyond the historic and authentic early 20th century firehouse ambience, the warm and skillful waitpersons and staff were exceptional, and the food (for me, roasted Brussels sprouts, macaroni & cheese, and of course Shepherd's Pie in honor of St. Pat's since it was 3/17) was indeed upscale comfort, enjoyed accompanied by a very good and not overpriced California Cab from a selection that although not large, offers a good range for appropriate pairing. It was a pleasant reunion for me and my guests. Well done!"

  • "We took a chance on this restaurant being out of towners just looking for a warm, cozy meal. We got more than we asked for and reasonably priced. Each server had favorites that they shared and reviewed as if we were old friends - and the food was great! But the service made us feel like we came every night. Thank you for a perfect ending of a stay that was getting old. You made our last night memorable!"

  • "A friend raved about the meatloaf. It was not good - just like ordinary meatloaf as always. dry, bland, tasteless and sauce didn't help. At first seated four of us in a tiny both so were practically on top of each other, but fortunately hostess recognized the problem and moved us to more comfortable. EXTREMELY NOISY!"

  • "This was always a go to dependable place - good food, good service. Food has gone a bit downhill but more importantly the service is extremely disappointing. Our waiter acted like he was doing us a huge favor serving us. On a number of occasions we had to chase him down to get his attention. Even though we said we were going to the theatre and they tout their shuttle to the Music Center, he did not take one ounce of care to assure our food, bill or the shuttle were accomodated. This is the second time we had such an experience here, or I would not be writing this review. First time I thought it was an exception. Now I won't come back."

  • "We had a good meal at the Engine Company before going to a concert. We went early at 5:30PM on a Saturday and it was not busy, but definitely picked up as we were leaving at around 7PM. The pan fired chicken I had was fair, however the specials (ribs and sole) were very good. The lemon meringue pie and banana desert were both very good. My only criticism is that the restaurant felt a little worn."
