A word from EN Japanese Brasserie
Experience traditional Japanese dining in a beautiful, authentic Japanese restaurant located in the West Village of Manhattan. We offer the rich traditions of Japanese home cooking with Chef Abe Hiroki’s modern approach to Washoku, a relaxed style of dining centered around a procession of small plates. Like we do in Japan, we cook with the seasons, and savor the peak flavor of ingredients.

We adhere to the fundamentals of Japanese cooking: respecting the ingredients and their natural flavors, cooking in the moment, and not doing too much. We have created an extensive menu, featuring dishes as fresh tofu (prepared six times a night), Saikyo Miso Black Cod, stone grilled Washugyu steaks, an assortment of sashimi and sushi and a signature EN Kaiseki set menu, a sequence of eight extraordinary presentations. To compliment your dining experience, we have developed an extensive list of small-batch, artisanal sake and shochu to complement your dining experience.

Friends from LA suggested we go here and though it's in our hood, we'd never been. The waiter recommended the first tasting menu. I don't usually like tasting menus, but everything was delicious, portions were large enough and we liked the variety of tastes, textures and things we hadn't had elsewhere. The place is nicely done. I liked looking into the kitchen. It was an unusual experience. The only strange thing was the waiter brought four glasses of wine, instead of a bottle, a misunderstanding, and it didn't result in him saying, "Let me take these back and bring what you ordered." But it didn't cloud the evening. It's not cheap, but it's worth what it costs.

We tried the 65USD menu. First dishes - including tofu - was fridge cold and pretty tasteless. Grilled marinated cod had the right color but tasted dull. Chicken on a hot plate was overdone and plate not sizzling when we got it – we saw it standing at a side table 5-10 minutes before we got it! Three courses left, but we decided to leave for an other restaurant to save the night. Before leaving we heard the couple beside us (having the same menu) complaining not only about too cold dishes, but also that staff missed giving them one of the courses... To hyped for their own good. Avoid.

My favorite restaurant in the city, simple as that. How I wish I still lived nearby, and didn't have to make a special trip downtown to go. Don't miss the fresh tofu (ask for chopped scallion with it) or the braised lotus root.

We decided to try this contemporary Japanese on a weeknight. It really came to life around eight thirty. The interior is beautifully designed and the service very courteous. The food is exquisite , although portions, such as the 4 tablespoons of shredded lobster in the lobster creation tend to be minimal. There are 3 chef's tasting menus, but we opted for a la carte choices. If you're a traditionalist or over fifty, this place may not be for you.

I liked the interior, the service and the food. We were sitting in front of the cooking counter but it wasn't disturbing: no noise or smell, but it added to the ambiance of the restaurant. There were two complementary dishes added from the chef which was a pleasant surprise. However I was a bit surprised when we gt the check - it was a bit exceeding my expectations, though we didn't order alcohol or deserts. Tofu was just amazing, rolls and sashimi were similar to other Japanese good quality restaurants. If I were there with my kids rather than coming with my friend, our check would be two times bigger, so I would not recommend it for really hungry guests. The waiter and his assistants were superb: helpful, polite and high class.

The food and service were excellent. The waiter was really patient with us in describing and explaining the food choices on the menu as we also had a couple of vegetarians in our group. However, the noise-level was loud as was the jazz music being piped into the main dining area. For conversational purposes, it would've been nice if the music was lower. Otherwise, our party had a great time.

I took my partner here for her birthday. She had lived for many years in Japan, and has many Japanese foodie friends. She said that when she has Japanese friends come to visit she will now take them here, and that the food served here is among the best one would find in Japan. Moreover, the staff are just fantastic -- they surprised us both once they learned that it was her birthday. I highly recommend the prix fixe menu with the matching flight of sake. En has very unique, delicious, and hard to find Sake.

The place looks ok i guess. The food is mediocre at best. The Toro Sushi hand roll had no taste and the Nori was literally like rubber...I actually had to spit.... The $ 90 Wagyu steak ehhh...you can get a MUCH better steak half the price at ANY better steak house. Anyway , I have made a point of going outside my comfort zone of the six or seven upper east side restaurants and try new things. I will be reviewing more since I eat out at least 5 nights a week.

it's great that the service is pretty fast but when we are still working on the hot dish another two arrives and we felt a bit rushed. it happened with the last time i was there too. it would be nicer if they can pay attention to our pace and bring the food out as we are finishing some instead of bringing everything all at once. or at least finishing the first dish/appetizer then print out the next. also taking the plates are quite fast too, they come almost as we are finishing the last bite. other than that the service is good and food is great.

not your neighborhood sushi place. Their sushi is likely very good but that's not what we come for. Hot and cold tofu and other multiple small plates to share are our favorite way to enjoy EN's unique flavorful cuisine. There are few totally vegetarian offerings, but those on the menu are worthwhile. if only one in your party doesn't eat fish, poultry or meat, starvation wont set in.

Despite EN being almost empty, we were told window tables were for 4 or more. Only after we pointed out 3 couples @ window tables were we seated there. EN is known for its fish, but there was none on the Restaurant Week menu, which was very limited and untempting. So we ordered off the regular menu -- a good meal, but not why we came.

We were a group of five celebrating a birthday. We were seated with one person at the end of the table -- not 3 and 2 across from each other, which always leaves one person out of the conversation -- so that was an excellent start. We all ordered one of the tasting menus (and the person with an allergy was accommodated with no fuss). Everything was delicious and we all enjoyed the surprise each time a new dish came. The fresh tofu was a highlight, as was the miso cod. We lingered over the meal for more than two hours, a rarity in this town. The bill was extremely high for us, which is what makes this a place only for special occasion. If it were not so expensive, I'd go there frequently.

If your are still struggling picking one of several NYC Restaurant week dining places, look no further. ENJB should be your first choice. My wife dined there this week. We arrived there exactly at 7:30pm, half an hour early, however wet and cold from the sudden downpour. To our surprise we were immediately led to a table and given hot towels that are typical of great Japanese restaurants. What however made the day special was the food and the service. Even though we were Restaurant week customers, the restaurant didn't compromise either on the quality of the food or the quality of the service unlike many others. The four course meal didn't disappoint. It was five star quality and worth our walk through soaking rain.
