A word from EN Japanese Brasserie
Experience traditional Japanese dining in a beautiful, authentic Japanese restaurant located in the West Village of Manhattan. We offer the rich traditions of Japanese home cooking with Chef Abe Hiroki’s modern approach to Washoku, a relaxed style of dining centered around a procession of small plates. Like we do in Japan, we cook with the seasons, and savor the peak flavor of ingredients.

We adhere to the fundamentals of Japanese cooking: respecting the ingredients and their natural flavors, cooking in the moment, and not doing too much. We have created an extensive menu, featuring dishes as fresh tofu (prepared six times a night), Saikyo Miso Black Cod, stone grilled Washugyu steaks, an assortment of sashimi and sushi and a signature EN Kaiseki set menu, a sequence of eight extraordinary presentations. To compliment your dining experience, we have developed an extensive list of small-batch, artisanal sake and shochu to complement your dining experience.

Diner Reviews
  • "it was a great experience first time there really classy food was and they gave us a sake testing to see which one we like. The decoration were great overall I like the restaurant."

  • "I really liked the salmon this time during Restaurant Week!"

  • "Maybe not the best Japanese restaurant but à very good one. Restaurant week menu gave us à good snapshot of japanese cuisine, different from traditional sushis and rolls. Service too fast to enjoy it properly."

  • "Despite EN being almost empty, we were told window tables were for 4 or more. Only after we pointed out 3 couples @ window tables were we seated there. EN is known for its fish, but there was none on the Restaurant Week menu, which was very limited and untempting. So we ordered off the regular menu -- a good meal, but not why we came."

  • "We were a group of five celebrating a birthday. We were seated with one person at the end of the table -- not 3 and 2 across from each other, which always leaves one person out of the conversation -- so that was an excellent start. We all ordered one of the tasting menus (and the person with an allergy was accommodated with no fuss). Everything was delicious and we all enjoyed the surprise each time a new dish came. The fresh tofu was a highlight, as was the miso cod. We lingered over the meal for more than two hours, a rarity in this town. The bill was extremely high for us, which is what makes this a place only for special occasion. If it were not so expensive, I'd go there frequently."

  • "If your are still struggling picking one of several NYC Restaurant week dining places, look no further. ENJB should be your first choice. My wife dined there this week. We arrived there exactly at 7:30pm, half an hour early, however wet and cold from the sudden downpour. To our surprise we were immediately led to a table and given hot towels that are typical of great Japanese restaurants. What however made the day special was the food and the service. Even though we were Restaurant week customers, the restaurant didn't compromise either on the quality of the food or the quality of the service unlike many others. The four course meal didn't disappoint. It was five star quality and worth our walk through soaking rain."

  • "My wife had steak and it came cold. so I asked if the steak was suppose to serve cold and waiter said they will bring out new one. About 5 min. later they reheated the same steak and brought it out.... ( microwave??? ) even McDonalds will make a new food when the 1st one was made wrong...."

  • "You must try their tofu (warm) and unidon! they are the best, and without doubt, worth trying! I also tried the egg custard and fried chicken but these weren't eye opening. It seemed like the tofu and unidons are their specialties"

  • "The food was great and the composition was beautiful. I had the special pre-fixed restaurant week sampler menu and I enjoyed it very much. Every dish vas very flavorful and nicely balanced. I recommend this place to everyone who likes asian food and wants to spend a special night with family or friends."

  • "The last course of the 7 dish dinner, the noodles are horrible! The rest of the night and food was awesome! Thank you so much for a great night!"

  • "We had the Restaurant Week menu and were disappointed by the lack of choices. For example, both of the special appetizers were mushrooms and only mushrooms. It would have been nice to have some variety. There were really only two entree options unless you were willing to pay $13 extra for a steak. Very nice service and ambience but EN you can do better."

  • "Actually this is the beat kaiseca I have ever tried. The restaurant looks like I was in a museum. I'm not crazy about Japanese cruise, I like the multicourse. The only thing happened that day one of the waiter broke one of the glass, that day is my friends birthday, and her feet were wet. So embarrassed."

  • "Food is excellent as I expected, and the service is outstanding! Unfortunately they did not have shochu that I wanted to try, but had another one very tasteful. Service was as I expect as I know how it is in Japan and the politeness and friendliness made me feel so welcomed and respected."

  • "For restaurant week summer 2014, we decided to go over to ENJB. The food as expected was amazing, the flavors so subtle and yet amazing. Our service was rushed, and very curt the moment they realised we were on the RW menu. They rushed us through courses, explained some to only one of the diners and were just not upto the mark."

  • "The services was great! Our waitress was very thoughtful to bring the food for my niece very quickly . She asked several time if we had food allergies . For reaturant week the service was great and Martha Stewart was sitting next to us! I have vowed never to return to megu.. So I am glad EN was good. Their Sake menu is one the most extensive in the city."

  • "I came here with a friend of mine. The service was great, the food was very good and fresh (I'm sorry but excellent rating is very tough for me) and I love the decor. It was an awesome time. We tried the basic sake sampler it was fun and I made a sake believer out of my friend. I can imagine this place being a great place to hang out with friends in the bar area and in the dining area and I can imagine it being good for a romantic time too because the noise level never got that large and there is plenty of space between you and the next table but it was in the middle of the day. Oh the ginger infused souchu is awesome."

  • "I came here for Restaurant week and it didn't disappoint. We were seated almost immediately and sat by the Kitchen watching the Chefs work. We had the Salmon and Black Angus strips. The Food was amazing. We also ordered the Sea Bass which was delightful. We had the homemade dessert which was a homemade ice cream and a Pudding . Overall, The Food was good and the Service was great."

  • "I love EN! I don't get to visit very often, as it's a bit of a trip for me and a bit out of my price range, but the Restaurant Week specials make it affordable."

  • "The food was average at best, but it was a nice night, and the beer was cold, so it was tolerable. Until we asked for the check. The waiter at first was apologetic, and explained that the computers were down. Hmmmm. The plot thickens. 25 minutes and 2 bathroom visits later, still no check. I asked the waiter again for a check, and then he did his best David Copperfield and vanished. I was perplexed- I mean- what establishment isn't happy to get paid. I asked for a manager. Surprisingly enough, there were 3 others waiting for the manager. Seriously understaffed and incompetent. It took another 20 minutes of carrying on just to get our bill. Needless to say, NEVER GOING BACK-- IT'S JUST NOT THAT GOOD; EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT IT IS. BEWARE."

  • "The food was almost inedible. The two starter courses were so disgusting that I couldn't eat them, and my "additional 13$" steak was unmemorable--it was perfectly cooked but the flavor was way too citrusy. The miso soup was good, but like any 5$ miso, and I enjoyed their interesting rice. The ice cream was also delicious, but the regular menu lists that dessert as three flavors and we only got one. I just felt like I wasted my entire day's pay on a bad meal..."

  • "restaurant week is the time where i take advantage of restaurants i can't normally go to (aka budget is tight) and this is what i did at EN.. Took a good friend for his bday for lunch. The menu wasn't impressive at all, and wasn't good. Three options for meal, and if you pick the sirloin one you have to pay for like $15 more. No thanks!"

  • "We had a great time (group of 7) at EN.. everything we ordered was so delicious, but especially the black cod and wagyu beef dishes. Service was great, and atmosphere is sleek. Would definitely come back again and highly recommend!"

  • "Great food, but when ordering what we thought were two main courses, and a vegetable side with rice, we were expecting to be more full but ended up with emptier wallets :[ If I go again I would recommend trying the prefix menu...it seemed a little confusing but should be worth it to ask a waiter about it! We also went there to scope for using the resturant as a possible wedding reception venue...great space but better for something more intimate due to the large centerpiece in the main room."

  • "...of modern Japanese food and nice ambiance. I guess EN's proposition is not dissimilar to Roka and Zuma (both in London), which I do like very much too. Had veggie tempura (fair), fried garlic shisso rice (tasy!) and a whole cooked seabass (outstanding!)"

  • "One of my favorite neighborhood gem! It's kid friendly and great for all occasions. I celebrated my 40th birthday there in one of their private rooms and the detail attention and service was outstanding. Thank you all for always being consistent."

  • "great for anyone who wants to eat in an over air-conditioned restaurant - at a cold stone bar - next to your dinner date and not across."

  • "I have been to EN for a very long time. Always perfect in all respects. Food device and accommodating you. I like the front because it is less noisy and more private. My frinds and business clients just love it. Not to mention the cucumber cocktail, A blast. Love you all and everything."

  • "This is a good restaurant with a nice interior and atmosphere. Definitely a hip place to be. The sake selection is quite long and the waiter is quite knowledgeable and helpful. However, the food was not incredible, it is just good enough. Had some chutoro sashimi, spider crab roll, anago roll, uni roll and a slice of wagyu beef. Personally, I would like to think that I know how to enjoy food and its different subtleties and nuances. Having eaten at other hyped and famous japanese places in New York and Worldwide, I found the food decent, a step up from the random mediocre restaurants but it really does not impress you. I would return just for the ambiance and the setting as it is quite nice but not for the food, which was not bad but decent"

  • "As first timers at EN Japanese Brasserie, my wife and I ordered a seven-course set dinner and enjoyed almost everything we were served. (One dish -- and a third of another -- were too bland.) Otherwise, despite EN's high-ish prices, the meal and the hard-edged contemporary decor were sufficiently seductive that we'll be happy to return."

  • "Very good experience, my gf and I took the small tasting menu and coupled it with one flight of paired sake. Definitely worth and very tasty. Highly recommend trying the sakes too, the range of flavours is very interesting. We found some waiters very good in explaining the dishes that were brought, while others were "just serving". Overall service very good in any case, as well as ambience. The place felt lively, in a very nice and non-disturbing way. Very happy and would recommend to others for an unusual Japanese dinner."
