The tea service at the Mandarin Oriental is exquisite. The multi-tiered trays of savories and sweets are weighted a little too heavily towards the sweets, but everything is high quality and nicely presented. If you reserve in advance, you'll find a table with your name on it. The service is attentive and competent. The setting is perfect for conversation; plan to go with a small group and spend several hours relaxing in the sunlight lounge, chatting over scones and tea. Additional nice touches: rock candy swizzle sticks, tiny pots of honey, candle water warmer, huge windows with a garden outside, plush couches and armchairs Note: plan to spend $50/person

We are a mother/daughter duo on a tea adventure. Having been to several afternoon teas both in the area and out of town, this one was certainly high ranking. The location was very Metro accessible, the staff friendly, and the atmosphere warm and inviting. The tea selection was good (we loved the rock candy stirring sticks for our tea), the food was both beautiful and delicious, and the service was wonderful. We would strongly recommend this as a nice spot to enjoy tea.

My young daughters hosted my parents for tea for my mother's birthday. It was an opportunity for them to spend time with their grandparents, and also to dress and behave like ladies. All had a wonderful experience and raved about the setting, the food and the service. The only challenge was actually getting to and from the hotel. Roads are not well marked, and the daily lane closures are confusing for out-of-towners not accustomed to negotiating DC streets. This, of course, is not the fault of the hotel. I had made reservations, and the hotel called the night before to confirm and ask if there were any dietary restrictions. This was a very nice touch. When the party arrived at the designated time, everything was set and ready for them.

I really enjoyed the ambience and the service was commendable. The young lady Rahel retorted all that we need to know about the Empress Lounge as it was our first time. She and those that assisted made the guest of honor feel very special! And me too!

Tea at the Empress Lounge was lovely. They have a handful of teas to choose from (I went with the classic Darjeeling) and also scones and madeleines, sandwiches, and sweets. Yum!

The decor in the hotel was lovely. The lounge was place next to the beautiful outdoor garden and on the beautiful day I went the flowers skipped across the gardens. The presentation of the tea, sweets and savories were great. However, the taste was not consistent. Some of the bread on the sandwiches seemed as if they'd sat out a bit. They weren't stale, but weren't fresh. One

Had a business lunch meeting here. Wanted something more casual than the formality of restaurant at the hotel. Did the reservation through the hotel website, which redirected it to OpenTable. Upon arriving, the staff said, "we don't use reservations". Luckily, there were tables available. Downvote: OpenTable or the hotel needs to STOP using OpenTable for the Empress Lounge if it doesn't recognize reservations.

I made a reservation at Empress Lounge because I wanted to surprise my wife for a lovely afternoon tea. From the moment they greeted us at the door everything went fantastic. The place is beautiful and the décor is absolutely breathtaking. My wife was very delighted with the service and quality of food. The servers were so polite and friendly making us feel we were having tea at home. Pampering us all the way. I strongly recommend Empress Lounge for lunch/tea/drinks. Bartenders are so knowledgeable they will enhance your drinks in every way. Fantastic afternoon.

We enjoyed Afternoon Tea at the Mandarin Oriental which, to my surprise, had an absolutely gorgeous outside terrace. The lush garden has a brick trail leading around the overlook with a breathtaking view of the waterfront, Arlington, Washington Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial! Our tier of sandwiches/sweets was full and unique. The smoked salmon tea cakes were especially delicious. We enjoyed champagne pairings before sipping the afternoon away with a pot of chamomile tea -- (beautiful loose flower buds!) Service was charming but not intrusive. The atmosphere in the lobby of the Mandarin Oriental was easygoing. High ceilings and gold-toned furniture added an air of sophistication. I will definitely be returning!
