Diner Reviews
  • "We made a last minute reservation through Open Table for a party of 5. It was a business dinner. The folks at Empire Steak House were most gracious when we arrived, helped with our luggage (because we had not gotten to our hotel yet), and proceeded to provide a fantastic dining experience for our meeting. Thank you!"

  • "Genuine hospitality, warmth and care from the owner to the busboys with excellent steaks and chops makes this a true neighborhood "gem"! Porterhouse for two is outstanding and a relative bargain compared to other midtown steakhouses. Deserts are also incurably addictive paired with perfect coffee and, typically, a complimentary after dinner/lunch cordial."

  • "Great place for lunch - food is pretty good as well. I highly recommend both locations but still to prefer to the 52nd street location."

  • "Nice place, my steak was a little bit too "burnt" outside to be a medium cooked steak. Also, one would expect a quieter environment from such a place but it seemed people feel forced to talk very loudly while eating... Very careful service, and you pay for that."

  • "We picked the Empire Steak House during Restaurant Week because of the choices on the menu as well as the reviews. We weren't disappointed. There was no attitude for ordering from the special menu. The servers couldn't have been more helpful in making suggestions. An appetizer of fried calamari was delicious and more than ample. The caesar salad was okay (nothing special). The filet was excellent and extremely tender. The dry-aged sirloin steak on the bone was really tasty. The carrot cake for dessert was scrumptious! There were several nice choices of wines by the glass (at reasonable prices). The only disappointment was the lackluster bread but this was far outweighed the the rest of the dinner."

  • "We would not return. Despite the fact that we had a 7:30 reservation, we had to wait 45 minutes for a table. To his credit, the manager asked if we wanted cocktails courtesy of him while we waited, which affirmed our belief that the wait was going to be long, even though we kept being told we were next in line. Moreover, the potatoes were fake--they came out of a box. Shame on a steakhouse for serving powdered potatoes. The steak was good, but we've had better. The serving sizes were generous."

  • "We came here for Valentine's Day. And being our 1st trip to NYC where we know service competes with SF restaurants, they did NOT let us down at all. Wait staff were kind and always there when you needed them... almost stealth-like. Food was GREAT from how it was prepared, portion sizes, meeting our dietary needs/wants, everything. They even had red roses for all the women that night - which made me feel special. Their wine list was massive and had great options at all price points. They never rushed our meal and did everything to make the night fun, special, memorable, and tasty. If you are visiting in NYC or live there, give yourself a steak night treat and go to Empire Steak House."

  • "I had an 8:30pm reservation and it took 30-40 min before i was seated. Very displeased about that. Then the waiter brought out rolls for the table and they were VERY HARD!! and they tasted stale. The butter was so hard . The waiter hardly ever came back to ask us if we needed anything. The steaks were not well done like we asked for but it took so long for the food we ate it and the food was not even that hot. Once we paid one of the cards had declined and instead of the waiter giving the young lady a min to call her bank he hovered over her as if we were going to stiff him 53$ That was very rude and when i asked him to give her a min he would not move. I would NEVER EVER go to this resturant again nor would i recommed this place to anyone."

  • "Visited for NY Restauarant Week. They were VERY busy but everyone agreed it was due to the promotion and there is no way this place could be that crowded on a Wednesday night. The ambiance is nice, nothing special; a classic steakhouse look. Service was a bit spotty but again very likely due to the crowd; you could see the stress on the faces of the wait staff and hosts. My wife had the filet mignon and I had the sirloin, both ordered medium rare and they nailed it. Mashed potato side was just OK, a little too buttery for my taste and we also shared a plate of steamed broccoli that wasn't super-crisp like we prefer but wasn't bad either. The new NYY steakhouse is one block down and we'll likely hit that first next time in this area."

  • "Service was very very good. Went for Restaurant Week. I had fried calamari as the appetizer, and it was a good portion. For the entree, filet mignon which was well worth it. It came with broccoli and mashed potatoes, both were unexceptional and reminded me of public school lunch sides. Good thing I ordered sauteed spinach as an extra side as it was delicious (although had to pay extra). Each member of the table had chose one of each dessert, all of which were okay, and nothin write home about. Prefix also included tea and coffee."

  • "I took my boyfriend here for his bday march 6th. They had alot of choices for their restaurant week menu. The bottle of wine was inexpensive but great. We had a reservation for 8:30 took us about 20 minutes to be seated. The staff was great. The salmon was cooked just the way I liked it. The waiter did spill my water accidentally while serving us. They did mix up our sides as well but the food was great. At the end they sung happy bday to my boyfriend. He enjoyed it!"

  • "The receptionist was too busy worrying about being cold and standing in the corner than to actually greet people. I booked my reservation at 8. The incompetent receptionist (3/6/14) told us the wait time was 15 min, which we werent too happy about but it was reasonable. 15 min later, she seemed to have forgotten about us, then she says another 20 min. This is not proper customer service. Finally, the manager took us to our seat. He said hi to every guest and is the only reason Id come back. The waiters were nice, the food was decent. Waiting 40 min. to be seated was unacceptable. Went to Smith and Wollensky today, and was seated instantly. The proffesionalism of their recepetionist/waiters were the level i expected you guys to be."

  • "Just left Empire Steak House on the last night of Restaurant Week. All four of us were THOROUGHLY disappointed. They rushed us like I've never experienced. Hovering over the table, serving the food WAY too fast. Even when mentioned it, they still did it. Plus the food wasn't good. Filet Mignons were fatty. Servers didn't know which were the ones that was ordered rare, medium rare, and medium and servers didn't care. Realize they are busy for Restaurant Week but if you're thinking of going there, DON'T - it was awful. There are so many other steakhouses in NYC that are so much better. Thankfully the company we were with was GREAT but the place itself - NEVER AGAIN! AWFUL!!!!"

  • "If you're into steak or good food in general make a trip here. I went for Restaurant Week lunch and was impressed by the list of options they offered. Tasty filet mignon and the chicken parm looked good too. Will be back for a special occasion!"

  • "NYC restaurant week began... I did not have a chance to visit any restaurants. At the last minute, me and a friend made reservations and the rest is history. The wine was to die for. The filet mignon was tender and the cute of meat was amazing. The service was fast yet friendly. I enjoyed every minute of dinner. I will go back :-)"

  • "Had dinner with girlfriends to celebrate someone's birthday and decided to take advantage of Restaurant Week. We have been to Empire Steak before during Restaurant week. They have many selections and their steak and lamb chops are delicious. There are seafood selections as well. Service is very good."

  • "I tried it for he first time thinking restaurant week...it should be better than Normal since the point of it is to get people to dine and come back for other occasions like anniversary birthdays etc First the hostess was nice. We were seated right away even we came half hour early. The whole time we didn't get a smile from the server. Our appetizer tasted great and were rushed to finish. Main course came in very very small portion but we were not inform of that prior to ordering . We asked for medium rare for our meats. We gat a medium and a well done which I did not expect to see in a nicer manhattan restaurant. We did not get an apology from he server or the manager. Actually the manger went to every table except mine Very unprofessional"

  • "I went in for restaurant week. Everything except the steak was good. My steak was thin, over seasoned, and overlooked. I guess I won't be coming in again for restaurant week."

  • "As a guy I visit a few steakhouses during restaurant week. Notably, Empire Steak House has bacon in appetizer menu which is not too common for restaurant week. The meat I had was filet mignon with heavy mushroom source. It was delicious, but I normally prefer rib or porterhouse with little source. I need to come back to conclude my review of the restaurant."

  • "Went during Food Week to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Service was outstanding, food very good and atmosphere top rate. On top of everything else, since it was our anniversary they gave us a free after dinner drink!!!! All in all a great experience."

  • "I just went to this restaurant this weekend for Restaurant Week, and the food was GREAT, at such a steal, too! However, the service was a bit rushed, with the waiters constantly coming by and asking if we were done with our plates."

  • "I think the point of restaurant week is to have people come back and paid full price next time but the food and service are that great. Well not this place! I had to wait over 30min to be seat which would be ok if everything else was great but it wasn't. The waiter was rude, I felt rushed to order and he would not let me finish my sentence. My food when it came was cold and not done as I requested. The only good thing was the dessert. It was good not great. When I go to a place like this I think to myself would I paid full price in the future? This place NO!"

  • "Empire Steakhouse had by far the best menu for restaurant week. I ordered the sirloin which was cooked exactly how I liked it (medium rare) and flavored so well that I will call it the best sirloin I've ever had. My friends ordered the filet mignon which they raved about, too. The tiramisu and carrot cake desserts, although small, were super soft and light but full of flavor. I'd gladly go back for any occasion that was worth splurging money on. The restaurant itself if small but they fit as many people in as possible. A reservation made it very easy to get in a table, sitting down exactly on time. It was very clear that everyone eating was having a blast with not even one moment of silence in the restaurant."

  • "I went here with a friend for restaurant week and what a decision. The menu was outstanding for the price you pay. The steak we had was listed normally at $48 and a 3 course meal was $38 how can you go wrong. On a true food note everything was OUTSTANDING. the steak, the appetizers and the cheesecake at the end was wonderful. The steak was cooked just how we ordered, very flavorful and tender. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a nice dinner out and if your thinking of a restaurant week choice put this on the top."

  • "My wife and I went there on Friday Night during Restaurant week, and when we walked in, we were greeted by the owner, that was beyond fantastic. Though it was packed that night, the owner kept giving us updates and since we made a reservation, we were seating within 20mins. My wife had the lamb chops and i had the NY Sirloin Steak. The steak was great. It was not my best steak, but it came pretty close to it. My wife lamb chops was a bit salty for her, so given, it was enjoyable for her. Overall, i had a great experience here , and the food was good."

  • "Amazing steakhouse! The owner was super friendly and constantly came over to make sure everything was okay. It was my friends birthday. They brought out a cake and gave us a round of shots free. One person in our party was an hour late. They sat us regardless and never rushed us! Great place!"

  • "We had dinner at this restaurant during NYC Restaurant Week. The food and wine were very good and the service was exceptional, but the restaurant was very noisy. Perhaps because it was Restaurant week. I will certainly return to this restaurant because the food and service were exceptional."

  • "We went to the Empire during Restaurant week and, while it offers a large selection and provides good value, it fails to distinguish itself from and above NYC's many other steakhouses. Caesar salad and tomatoes with mozzarela were okay. Filet mignon was good, but the veal chop was somewhat tough and the lamb chops were served rare rather than medium. Service was well-intentioned, though pedestrian and somewhat intrusive. This may be a bad week to criticize restaurants as many operate under the unusual strain of trying to serve a greater number of patrons - perhaps their true capacity. However, this is their showcase, so let the chips fall where they may. My steak money remains with chains like Morton's and Capital Grille."

  • "Came here on a whim for restuarant week. Ended up being one of the best steaks I have ever had. Came with two great sides. The service was amazing as well. My glass was never empty."

  • "Selected this place for a double date during Restaurant Week and from all the steakhouses listed for NYC Restaurant Week I find that Empire Steakhouse gives you the most bang for your buck! Listing their best entrés rather than a skimpy portion of it. The 3 course dining experience left me full, satisfied, and excited to return and tell everyone I know about it. The manager/owner along with the waiters were super polite and made me feel really warm and welcome. The service was superb! Will definitely be returning!"
